We classify compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, where $g-1$ is a prime $p$, which have a group of automorphisms of order $ρ(g-1)$ for some integer $ρ\ge 1$, and determine isogeny decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties. This extends results of Belolipetzky and the second author for $ρ>6$, and of the first and third authors for $ρ=3, 4, 5$ and $6$. As a corollary we classify the orientably regular hypermaps (including maps) of genus $p+1$, together with the non-orientable regular hypermaps of characteristic $-p$, with automorphism group of order divisible by the prime $p$; this extends results of Conder, \v Sirá\v n and Tucker for maps.
In this article we classify compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+q^2$ with a group of automorphisms of order $3q^2,$ where $q$ is a prime number. We also study decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties.
In this paper, we explicitly determine the automorphism group of every nonhyperelliptic superspecial curve of genus $4$ over $\mathbb{F}_{11}$. Our algorithm determining automorphism groups works for any nonhyperelliptic curves of genus $4$ over finite fields. With this computation, we show the compatibility between the enumeration of superspecial curves of genus $4$ over $\mathbb{F}_{11}$ obtained computationally by the first and second authors in 2017 and an enumeration by Galois cohomology theory.
In this article we study compact Riemann surfaces with a non-large group of automorphisms of maximal order; namely, compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with a group of automorphisms of order $4g-4.$ Under the assumption that $g-1$ is prime, we provide a complete classification of them and determine isogeny decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties.
A Mumford curve of genus g=5,6,7 or 8 over a non-archimedean field of characteristic p (such that if p=0, the residue field characteristic exceeds 5) has at most 12(g-1) automorphisms. In this paper, all curves that attain this bound and their automorphism groups (called of Lame type) are explicitly determined.
For each group $G$, $(|G| > 2)$ \, which acts as a full automorphism group on a genus 3 hyperelliptic curve, we determine the family of curves which have 2-Weierstrass points. Such families of curves are explicitly determined in terms of the absolute invariants of binary octavics. The 1-dimensional families that we discover have the property that they contain only genus 0 components.
The present work completes the classification of the compact Riemann surfaces of genus g with an analytic automorphism of order p (prime number) and p > g. More precisely, we construct a parameteriza- tion space for them, we compute their groups of uniformization and we compute their full automorphism groups. Also, we give affine equations for special cases and some implications on the components of the singular locus of the moduli space of smooth curves of genus g.
For a complex surface of general type with a relatively minimal genus 2 fibration, the bounds of the orders of the automorphism group of the fibration, of its abelian subgroups and of its cyclic subgroups are determined as linear functions of $c^2_1$. Most of them are the best.
We determine, for all genus $g\geq2$ the Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $4g$ automorphisms. For $g\neq$ $3,6,12,15$ or $30$, this surfaces form a real Riemann surface $\mathcal{F}_{g}$ in the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g}$: the Riemann sphere with three punctures. The set of real Riemann surfaces in $\mathcal{F}_{g}$ consists of three intervals its closure in the Deligne-Mumford compactification of $\mathcal{M}_{g}$ is a closed Jordan curve.
In this paper, we list all cyclic automorphisms subgroups $H$ for which there exists a smooth projective non-hyperelliptic sextic curve $C$ with $H\preceq Aut(C)$. Furthermore, we attach to each group a defining equation of a plane sextic curve having exactly this group as cyclic automorphisms subgroup. These equations cover up to isomorphism all plane non-singular sextic curves having some non-trivial automorphism.
Bujalance, Costa and Izquierdo have recently proved that all those Riemann surfaces of genus $g \ge 2$ different from $3, 6, 12, 15$ and 30, with exactly $4g$ automorphisms form an equisymmetric one-dimensional family, denoted by $\mathcal{F}_g.$ In this paper, for every prime number $q \ge 5,$ we explore further properties of each Riemann surface $S$ in $\mathcal{F}_q$ as well as of its Jacobian variety $JS.$
We show that for every g > 1 there is a compact arithmetic Riemann surface of genus g with at least 4(g-1) automorphisms, and that this lower bound is attained by infinitely many genera, the smallest being 24.
In this paper we classify curves of genus 2 with group of automorphisms isomorphic to D_8 or D_12 over an arbitrary field k (of characteristic different from 2 in the D_8 case and from 2 and 3 in the D_{12} case) up to k-isomorphism. As an application of the classification of curves of genus 2 obtained, we get precise arithmetic information on their elliptic quotients and on their jacobians. Over the field k=Q, we show that the elliptic quotients of the curves with automorphisms D_8 and D_{12} are precisely the Q-curves of degrees 2 and 3, respectively, and we determine which curves have jacob…
In this article we prove that the full automorphism group of a cyclic $p$-gonal pseudo-real Riemann surface of genus $g$ is either a semidirect product $C_{n}\ltimes C_{p}$ or a cyclic group, where $p$ is a prime $>2$ and $g>(p-1)^{2}$. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a cyclic $p$-gonal pseudo-real Riemann surface with full\ automorphism group isomorphic to a given finite group. Finally we describe some families of cyclic $p$-gonal pseudo-real Riemann surfaces where the order of the full automorphism group is maximal and show that such families determine some…
The automorphism groups of the Fano-Mukai fourfold of genus 10 were studied in our previous paper [arXiv:1706.04926]. In particular, we found in [arXiv:1706.04926] the neutral components of these groups. In the present paper we finish the description of the discrete parts. Up to isomorphism, there are two special Fano--Mukai fourfold of genus 10 with the automorphism groups $GL_2(k)\rtimes\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ and $(\mathbb{G}_a\times\mathbb{G}m)\rtimes\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, respectively. For any other Fano-Mukai fourfold $V$ of genus 10 one has $\mathrm{Aut}(V)=\mathbb{G}_m^2\rtimes \math…
Dessins d'enfants are combinatorial structures on compact Riemann surfaces defined over algebraic number fields, and regular dessins are the most symmetric of them. If G is a finite group, there are only finitely many regular dessins with automorphism group G. It is shown how to enumerate them, how to represent them all as quotients of a single regular dessin U(G), and how certain hypermap operations act on them. For example, if G is a cyclic group of order n then U(G) is a map on the Fermat curve of degree n and genus (n-1)(n-2)/2. On the other hand, if G=A_5 then U(G) has genus 2742188300472…
In arithmetic and algebraic geometry, superspecial (s.sp.\ for short) curves are one of the most important objects to be studied, with applications to cryptography and coding theory. If $g \geq 4$, it is not even known whether there exists such a curve of genus $g$ in general characteristic $p > 0$, and in the case of $g=4$, several computational approaches to search for those curves have been proposed. In the genus-$4$ hyperelliptic case, Kudo-Harashita proposed a generic algorithm to enumerate all s.sp.\ curves, and recently Ohashi-Kudo-Harashita presented an algorithm specific to the case w…
Let $\C$ be a genus 2 curve defined over $k$, $char (k) =0$. If $\C$ has a $(3,3)$-split Jacobian then we show that the automorphism group $Aut(\C)$ is isomorphic to one of the following: $\bZ_2, V_4, D_8$, or $D_{12}$. There are exactly six $\bC$-isomorphism classes of genus two curves $\C$ with $Aut(\C)$ isomorphic to $D_8$ (resp., $D_{12}$). %We compute their absolute invariants $i_1, i_2, i_3$. We show that exactly four (resp., three) of these classes with group $D_8$ (resp., $D_{12}$) have representatives defined over $\bQ$. We discuss some of these curves in detail and find their rationa…
If $p$ is prime, a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g\geq 2$ is called cyclic $p$-gonal if it admits a cyclic group of automorphisms $C_{p}$ of order $p$ such that the quotient space $X/C_{p}$ has genus 0. If in addition $C_{p}$ is not normal in the full automorphism $G$, then we call $G$ a non-normal cyclic $p$-gonal group. In the following we classify all non-normal $p$-gonal groups.
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a (projective, non-singular, geometrically irreducible) curve of even genus $g(\mathcal{X}) \geq 2$ defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of odd characteristic $p$. If the $p$-rank $γ(\mathcal{X})$ equals $g(\mathcal{X})$, then $\mathcal{X}$ is \emph{ordinary}. In this paper, we deal with \emph{large} automorphism groups $G$ of ordinary curves of even genus. We prove that $|G| < 821.37g(\mathcal{X})^{7/4}$. The proof of our result is based on the classification of automorphism groups of curves of even genus in positive characteristic, see \cite{giulietti-korchmaro…
This note uses some recent calculations of Conder and Bujalance (on classifying finite index group extensions of Fuchsian groups with abelian quotient and torsion free kernel) in order to determine the full automorphism groups of some cylic coverings of the line (including curves of Fermat and Lefschetz type). The answer is complete for cyclic covers that branch over three points.
In this paper we classify all Riemann surfaces having a large abelian group of automorphisms, that is having an abelian group of automorphism of order strictly bigger then $4(g-1)$, where $g$ denotes as usual the genus of the Riemann surface.
We study genus 3 hyperelliptic curves which have an extra involution. The locus $Ł_3$ of these curves is a 3-dimensional subvariety in the genus 3 hyperelliptic moduli $\H_3$. We find a birational parametrization of this locus by affine 3-space. For every moduli point $\p \in \H_3$ such that $|\Aut (\p)|>2$, the field of moduli is a field of definition. We provide a rational model of the curve over its field of moduli for all moduli points $\p \in \H_3$ such that $|\Aut(\p)|>4$. This is the first time that such a rational model of these curves appears in the literature.
We study genus 2 function fields with elliptic subfields of degree 2. The locus $Ł_2$ of these fields is a 2-dimensional subvariety of the moduli space $\mathcal M_2$ of genus 2 fields. An equation for $Ł_2$ is already in the work of Clebsch and Bolza. We use a birational parameterization of $Ł_2$ by affine 2-space to study the relation between the j-invariants of the degree 2 elliptic subfields. This extends work of Geyer, Gaudry, Stichtenoth and others. We find a 1-dimensional family of genus 2 curves having exactly two isomorphic elliptic subfields of degree 2; this family is parameterized …
In positive characteristic, algebraic curves can have many more automorphisms than expected from the classical Hurwitz's bound. There even exist algebraic curves of arbitrary high genus g with more than 16g^4 automorphisms. It has been observed on many occasions that the most anomalous examples invariably have zero p-rank. In this paper, the K-automorphism group Aut(X) of a zero 2-rank algebraic curve X defined over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic 2 is investigated. The main result is that if the curve has genus g greater than or equal to 2, and |Aut(X)|>24g^2, then Aut(X) ha…
We describe an algorithm to compute the zeta function of any non-hyperelliptic genus 3 plane curve $C$ over a finite field with automorphism group $G = \mathbb{Z} / 2 \mathbb{Z}$. This algorithm computes in the Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology of~the curve. Using the relation between the Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology of $C$ and its quotient $E := C/G$, the computation splits into 2 parts: one in a subspace of the Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology and a second which reduces to the point counting on an elliptic curve $E$. The former corresponds to the dimension $2$ abelian surface $\mathrm{ker}(\mathrm{Ja…
We analyze the Brill-Noether theory of trivalent graphs and multigraphs having largest possible automorphism group in a fixed genus. For trivalent multigraphs with loops of genus at least 3, we show that there exists a graph with maximal automorphism group which is Brill-Noether special. We prove similar results for multigraphs without loops of genus at least 6, as well as simple graphs of genus at least 7. This analysis yields counterexamples, in any sufficiently large genus, to a conjecture of Caporaso.
In this note, we give a so-called representative classification for the strata by automorphism group of smooth $\bar{k}$-plane curves of genus $6$, where $\bar{k}$ is a fixed separable closure of a field $k$ of characteristic $p = 0$ or $p > 13$. We start with a classification already obtained by the first author and we use standard techniques. Interestingly, in the way to get these families for the different strata, we find two remarkable phenomenons that did not appear before. One is the existence of a non $0$-dimensional final stratum of plane curves. At a first sight it may sound odd, but …
A Locally Recoverable Code is a code such that the value of any single coordinate of a codeword can be recovered from the values of a small subset of other coordinates. When we have $δ$ non overlapping subsets of cardinality $r_i$ that can be used to recover the missing coordinate we say that a linear code $\mathcal{C}$ with length $n$, dimension $k$, minimum distance $d$ has $(r_1,\ldots, r_δ)$-locality and denote it by $[n, k, d; r_1, r_2,\dots, r_δ].$ In this paper we provide a new upper bound for the minimum distance of these codes. Working with a finite number of subgroups of cardinality …
We compute the automorphism groups of the Dolbeault, de Rham and Betti moduli spaces for the multiplicative group ${\mathbb C}^*$ associated to a compact connected Riemann surface.
We study the configurations of genus 2 curves on the Fano surfaces of cubic threefolds. We establish a link between some involutive automorphisms acting on such a surface S and genus 2 curves on S. We give a partial classification of the Fano surfaces according to the automorphism group generated by these involutions and determine the configurations of their genus 2 curves. We study the Fano surface of the Klein cubic threefold for which the 55 genus 2 curves generate a rank 25=h^{1,1} index 2 subgroup of the Néron-Severi group.
We compute the stringy E function of the moduli space of rank 2 bundles over a Riemann surface of genus 3. In doing so, we answer a question of Batyrev about the stringy E functions of the GIT quotients of linear representations.
Belolipetsky and Jones classified those compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ admitting a large group of automorphisms of order $λ(g-1)$, for each $λ>6,$ under the assumption that $g-1$ is a prime number. In this article we study the remaining large cases; namely, we classify Riemann surfaces admitting $5(g-1)$ and $6(g-1)$ automorphisms, with $g-1$ a prime number. As a consequence, we obtain the classification of Riemann surfaces admitting a group of automorphisms of order $3(g-1)$, with $g-1$ a prime number. We also provide isogeny decompositions of their Jacobian varieties.
In this article we determine the maximal possible order of the automorphism group of the form $ag + b$, where $a$ and $b$ are integers, of a complex three and four-dimensional family of compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, appearing for all genus. In addition, we construct and describe explicit complex three and four-dimensional families possessing these maximal number of automorphisms.
We present an algorithm for computing equations of canonically embedded Riemann surfaces with automorphisms. A variant of this algorithm with many heuristic improvements is used to produce equations of Riemann surfaces $X$ with large automorphism groups (that is, $|\mathrm{Aut}(X)| > 4(g_X-1)$) for genus $4 \leq g_X \leq 7$. The main tools are the Eichler trace formula for the character of the action of $\mathrm{Aut}(X)$ on holomorphic differentials, algorithms for producing matrix generators of a representation of a finite group with a specified irreducible character, and Gröbner basis techni…
In this note we discuss techniques for determining the automorphism group of a genus $g$ hyperelliptic curve $\X_g$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero. The first technique uses the classical $GL_2 (k)$-invariants of binary forms. This is a practical method for curves of small genus, but has limitations as the genus increases, due to the fact that such invariants are not known for large genus. The second approach, which uses dihedral invariants of hyperelliptic curves, is a very convenient method and works well in all genera. First we define the normal decompo…
In this article we extend results of Zomorrodian to determine upper bounds for the order of a nilpotent group of automorphisms of a complex $d$-dimensional family of compact Riemann surfaces, where $d \geqslant 1.$ We provide conditions under which these bounds are sharp. In addition, for the one-dimensional case we construct and describe an explicit family attaining the bound for infinitely many genera. We obtain similar results for the case of $p$-groups of automorphisms.
For a proper scheme X with a fixed 1-perfect obstruction theory, we define virtual versions of holomorphic Euler characteristic, chi y-genus, and elliptic genus; they are deformation invariant, and extend the usual definition in the smooth case. We prove virtual versions of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch and Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorems. We show that the virtual chi y-genus is a polynomial, and use this to define a virtual topological Euler characteristic. We prove that the virtual elliptic genus satisfies a Jacobi modularity property; we state and prove a localization theorem in the toric …
We give a simple proof of the Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem for smooth complete toric varieties, based on Ishida's result that the Todd genus of a smooth complete toric variety is one.
We introduce K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of algebraic orbifold target spaces. Using the methods developed by Givental-Tonita we characterize Giventals Lagrangian cone of quantum K theory of orbifolds in terms of the cohomological cone.
Let $\X$ be an irreducible, smooth, projective curve of genus $g \geq 2$ defined over the complex field $\C.$ Then there is a covering $π: \X \longrightarrow ¶^1,$ where $¶^1$ denotes the projective line. The problem of expressing branch points of the covering $π$ in terms of the transcendentals (period matrix, thetanulls, e.g.) is classical. It goes back to Riemann, Jacobi, Picard and Rosenhein. Many mathematicians, including Picard and Thomae, have offered partial treatments for this problem. In this work, we address the problem for cyclic curves of genus 2, 3, and 4 and find relations among…
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$, and let $G$ be a subgroup of $Aut(X)$. We show that if the Sylow $2$-subgroups of $G$ are cyclic, then $|G|\leq 30(g-1)$. If all Sylow subgroups of $G$ are cyclic, then, with two exceptions, $|G|\leq 10(g-1)$. More generally, if $G$ is metacyclic, then, with one exception, $|G|\leq 12(g-1)$. Each of these bounds is attained for infinitely many values of $g$.
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$, and let $Aut(X)$ be its group of automorphims. We show that the exponent of $Aut(X)$ is bounded by $42(g-1)$. We also determine explicitly the infinitely many values of $g$ for which this bound is reached and the corresponding groups. Finally we discuss related questions for subgroups $G$ of $Aut(X)$ that are subject to additional conditions, for example being solvable.
We study the deformation theory of nonsigular projective curves defined over algebraic closed fields of positive characteristic. We show that under some assumptions the local deformation problem for automorphisms of powerseries can be reduced to a deformation problem for matrix representations. We study both equicharacteristic and mixed deformations in the case of two dimensional representations.
Mukai varieties are Fano varieties of Picard number one and coindex three. In genus seven to ten they are linear sections of some special homogeneous varieties. We describe the generic automorphism groups of these varieties. When they are expected to be trivial for dimensional reasons, we show they are indeed trivial, up to three interesting and unexpected exceptions in genera 7, 8, 9, and codimension 4, 3, 2 respectively. We conclude in particular that a generic prime Fano threefold of genus g has no automorphisms for 7 $\le$ g $\le$ 10. In the Appendix by Y. Prokhorov, the latter statement i…
