Let f be an entire function with a bounded set of singular values, and suppose furthermore that the postsingular set of f is bounded. We show that every component of the escaping set I(f) is unbounded. This provides a partial answer to a question of Eremenko.
Much recent work on the iterates of a transcendental entire function $f$ has been motivated by Eremenko's conjecture that all the components of the escaping set $I(f)$ are unbounded. Here we show that if $I(f)$ is disconnected, then the set $I(f)\setminus D$ has uncountably many unbounded components for any open disc $D$ that meets the Julia set of $f$. For the set $A_R(f)$, which is the `core' of the fast escaping set, we prove the much stronger result that for some $R>0$ either $A_R(f)$ is connected and has the structure of an infinite spider's web or it has uncountably many components each …
We prove an analog of Boettcher's theorem for transcendental entire functions in the Eremenko-Lyubich class B. More precisely, let f and g be entire functions with bounded sets of singular values and suppose that f and g belong to the same parameter space (i.e., are *quasiconformally equivalent* in the sense of Eremenko and Lyubich). Then f and g are conjugate when restricted to the set of points which remain in some sufficiently small neighborhood of infinity under iteration. Furthermore, this conjugacy extends to a quasiconformal self-map of the plane. We also prove that this conjugacy is es…
For a transcendental entire function $f$ of finite order in the Eremenko-Lyubich class $\mathcal{B}$, we give conditions under which the Lebesgue measure of the escaping set $\mathcal{I}(f)$ of $f$ is zero. This is inspired by the recent work of Aspenberg and Bergweiler, in which they give conditions on entire functions in the same class with escaping sets of positive Lebesgue measure. We will construct an entire function in the Eremenko-Lyubich class to show that the condition given by Aspenberg and Bergweiler is essentially sharp. Furthermore, we adapt our idea of proof to the case of infini…
We show that for many families of transcendental entire functions $f$ the property that $m^n(r)\to\infty$ as $n\to \infty$, for some $r>0$, where $m(r)=\min\{|f(z)|:|z|=r\}$, implies that the escaping set $I(f)$ of $f$ has the structure of a spider's web. In particular, in this situation $I(f)$ is connected, so Eremenko's conjecture holds. We also give new examples of families of functions for which this iterated minimum modulus condition holds and new families for which it does not hold.
We study a family of transcendental entire functions of genus zero, for which all of the zeros lie within a closed sector strictly smaller than a half-plane. In general these functions lie outside the Eremenko-Lyubich class. We show that for functions in this family the fast escaping set has Hausdorff dimension equal to two.
We introduce a new technique that allows us to make progress on two long standing conjectures in transcendental dynamics: Baker's conjecture that a transcendental entire function of order less than 1/2 has no unbounded Fatou components, and Eremenko's conjecture that all the components of the escaping set of an entire function are unbounded. We show that both conjectures hold for many transcendental entire functions whose zeros all lie on the negative real axis, in particular those of order less than 1/2. Our proofs use a classical distortion theorem based on contraction of the hyperbolic metr…
We study the dynamics of a collection of families of transcendental entire functions which generalises the well-known exponential and cosine families. We show that for functions in many of these families the Julia set, the escaping set and the fast escaping set are all spiders' webs of positive area. This result is unusual in that most of these functions lie outside the Eremenko-Lyubich class B. This is also the first result on the area of a spider's web.
We show that the fast escaping set $A(f)$ of a transcendental entire function $f$ has a structure known as a spider's web whenever the maximum modulus of $f$ grows below a certain rate. We give examples of entire functions for which the fast escaping set is not a spider's web which show that this growth rate is best possible. By our earlier results, these are the first examples for which the escaping set has a spider's web structure but the fast escaping set does not. These results give new insight into a conjecture of Baker and a conjecture of Eremenko.
In this paper, we give a definition of Eremenko's point of a meromorphic function with infinitely many poles and a condition for its existence in narrow annuli in terms of a covering theorem of annulus.
We construct an entire function in the Eremenko-Lyubich class $\B$ whose Julia set has only bounded path-components. This answers a question of Eremenko from 1989 in the negative. On the other hand, we show that for many functions in $\B$, in particular those of finite order, every escaping point can be connected to $\infty$ by a curve of escaping points. This gives a partial positive answer to the aforementioned question of Eremenko, and answers a question of Fatou from 1926.
In this paper, we mainly study hyperbolic semigroups from which we get non-empty escaping set and Eremenko's conjecture remains valid. We prove that if each generator of bounded type transcendental semigroup S is hyperbolic, then the semigroup is itself hyperbolic and all components of I(S) are unbounded
Let $f$ be a transcendental entire function and let $I(f)$ denote the set of points that escape to infinity under iteration. We give conditions which ensure that, for certain functions, $I(f)$ is connected. In particular, we show that $I(f)$ is connected if $f$ has order zero and sufficiently small growth or has order less than 1/2 and regular growth. This shows that, for these functions, Eremenko's conjecture that $I(f)$ has no bounded components is true. We also give a new criterion related to $I(f)$ which is sufficient to ensure that $f$ has no unbounded Fatou components.
Let $f$ be a transcendental entire function and let $U$ be a univalent Baker domain of $f$. We prove a new result about the boundary behaviour of conformal maps and use this to show that the non-escaping boundary points of $U$ form a set of harmonic measure zero with respect to $U$. This leads to a new sufficient condition for the escaping set of $f$ to be connected, and also a new general result on Eremenko's conjecture.
Given two permutable entire functions $f$ and $g,$ we establish vital relationship between escaping sets of entire functions $f, g$ and their composition. We provide some families of transcendental entire functions for which Eremenko's conjecture holds. In addition, we investigate the dynamical properties of the mapping $f(z)=z+1+e^{-z}.$
Recently Bishop constructed the first example of a bounded-type transcendental entire function with a wandering domain using a new technique called quasiconfomal folding. It is easy to check that his method produces an entire function of infinite order. We construct the first examples of entire functions of finite order in the class $\mathcal B$ with wandering domains. As in Bishop's example, these wandering domains are of oscillating type, that is, they have an unbounded non-escaping orbit. To construct such functions we use quasiregular interpolation instead of quasiconformal folding, which …
Let $f$ be a transcendental entire function. The fast escaping set $A(f)$, various regularity conditions on the growth of the maximum modulus of $f$, and also, more recently, the quite fast escaping set $Q(f)$ have all been used to make progress on fundamental questions concerning the iteration of $f$. In this paper we establish new relationships between these three concepts. We prove that a certain weak regularity condition is necessary and sufficient for $Q(f)=A(f)$ and give examples of functions for which $Q(f)\neq A(f)$. We also apply a result of Beurling that relates the size of the minim…
Let $f$ be a transcendental entire function and let $A(f)$ denote the set of points that escape to infinity `as fast as possible' under iteration. By writing $A(f)$ as a countable union of closed sets, called `levels' of $A(f)$, we obtain a new understanding of the structure of this set. For example, we show that if $U$ is a Fatou component in $A(f)$, then $\partial U\subset A(f)$ and this leads to significant new results and considerable improvements to existing results about $A(f)$. In particular, we study functions for which $A(f)$, and each of its levels, has the structure of an `infinite …
It is known that, for many transcendental entire functions in the Eremenko-Lyubich class $\mathcal{B}$, every escaping point can eventually be connected to infinity by a curve of escaping points. When this is the case, we say that the functions are criniferous. In this paper, we extend this result to a new class of maps in $\mathcal{B}$. Furthermore, we show that if a map belongs to this class, then its Julia set contains a Cantor bouquet; in other words, it is a subset of $\mathbb{C}$ ambiently homeomorphic to a straight brush.
The escaping set I(f) of a transcendental meromorphic function f consists of all points which tend to infinity under iteration. The Eremenko-Lyubich class B consists of all transcendental meromorphic functions for which the set of finite critical and asymptotic values of f is bounded. It is shown that if f is in B and of finite order of growth, if infinity is not an asymptotic value of f and if the multiplicities of the poles of f are uniformly bounded, then the Hausdorff dimension of I(f) is strictly smaller than 2. In fact, we give a sharp bound for the Hausdorff dimension of I(f) in terms o…
There are several classes of transcendental entire functions for which the Julia set consists of an uncountable union of disjoint curves each of which joins a finite endpoint to infinity. Many authors have studied the topological properties of this set of finite endpoints. It was recently shown that, for certain functions in the exponential family, there is a strong dichotomy between the topological properties of the set of endpoints which escape and those of the set of endpoints which do not escape. In this paper, we show that this result holds for large families of functions in the Eremenko-…
We introduce the concept of escaping set for semigroups of transcendental entire functions using Fatou-Julia theory. Several results of the escaping set associated with the iteration of one transcendental entire function have been extended to transcendental semigroups. We also investigate the properties of escaping sets for conjugate semigroups and abelian transcendental semigroups. Several classes of transcendental semigroups for which Eremenko's conjectures hold have been provided.
Suppose that $f$ is a transcendental entire function. In 2014, Rippon and Stallard showed that the union of the escaping set with infinity is always connected. In this paper we consider the related question of whether the union with infinity of the bounded orbit set, or the bungee set, can also be connected. We give sufficient conditions for these sets to be connected, and an example a transcendental entire function for which all three sets are simultaneously connected. This function lies, in fact, in the Speiser class. It is known that for many transcendental entire functions the escaping set…
We study the dynamics of iterated cosine maps $E\colon z \mapsto ae^z+be^{-z},$ with $a,b \in \C\setminus \{0\}$. We show that the points which converge to infinity under iteration are organized in the form of rays and, as in the exponential family, every escaping point is either on one of these rays or the landing point of a unique ray. Thus we get a complete classification of the escaping points of the cosine family, confirming a conjecture of Eremenko in this case. We also get a particularly strong version of the ``dimension paradox'': the set of rays has Hausdorff dimension 1, while the se…
Let f be a transcendental entire function in the Eremenko-Lyubich class B. We give a lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of f that depends on the growth of f. This estimate is best possible and is obtained by proving a more general result concerning the size of the escaping set of a function with a logarithmic tract.
We consider a class of functions, denoted by K in this paper, which are meromorphic outside a compact and countable set B(f), investigated by A. Bolsch in his thesis in 1997. The set B(f) is the closure of isolated essential singularities. We review main definitions and properties of the Fatou and Julia sets of functions in class K. It is studied the role of B(f) in this context. Following Eremenko it is defined escaping sets and we prove some results related to them. For instance, the dynamics of a function is extended to its singularities using escaping hairs. We give an example of an escapi…
We construct several new classes of transcendental entire functions, f, such that both the escaping set, I(f), and the fast escaping set, A(f), have a structure known as a spider's web. We show that some of these classes have a degree of stability under changes in the function. We show that new examples of functions for which I(f) and A(f) are spiders' webs can be constructed by composition, by differentiation, and by integration of existing examples. We use a property of spiders' webs to give new results concerning functions with no unbounded Fatou components.
This article investigates the parameter space of the exponential family $z\mapsto \exp(z)+κ$. We prove that the boundary (in $\C$) of every hyperbolic component is a Jordan arc, as conjectured by Eremenko and Lyubich as well as Baker and Rippon. In fact, we prove the stronger statement that the exponential bifurcation locus is connected in $\C$, which is an analog of Douady and Hubbard's celebrated theorem that the Mandelbrot set is connected. We show furthermore that $\infty$ is not accessible through any nonhyperbolic ("queer") stable component. The main part of the argument consists of demo…
For a transcendental entire function f, we study the set of points BU(f) whose iterates under f neither escape to infinity nor are bounded. We give new results on the connectedness properties of this set and show that, if U is a Fatou component that meets BU(f), then most boundary points of U (in the sense of harmonic measure) lie in BU(f). We prove this using a new result concerning the set of limit points of the iterates of f on the boundary of a wandering domain. Finally, we give some examples to illustrate our results.
We wish to investigate some elementary problems concerning topological dynamics revolving around our proposed definition of escaping set. We also discuss the notion of escaping set in the induced dynamics of the hyperspace. Moreover, we extend the notion of limit set and escaping set for the general semigroup generated by continuous self maps.
We prove a form of the $\cos πρ$ theorem which gives strong estimates for the minimum modulus of a transcendental entire function of order zero. We also prove a generalisation of a result of Hinkkanen that gives a sufficient condition for a transcendental entire function to have no unbounded Fatou components. These two results enable us to show that there is a large class of entire functions of order zero which have no unbounded Fatou components. On the other hand we give examples which show that there are in fact functions of order zero which not only fail to satisfy Hinkkanen's condition but…
The Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational and transcendental entire functions has recently been extended to quasiregular maps in more than two real dimensions. Our goal in this paper is similar; we extend the iteration theory of analytic self-maps of the punctured plane to quasiregular self-maps of punctured space. We define the Julia set as the set of points for which the complement of the forward orbit of any neighbourhood of the point is a finite set. We show that the Julia set is non-empty, and shares many properties with the classical Julia set of an analytic function. These properties…
We show that if a meromorphic function has a direct singularity over infinity, then the escaping set has an unbounded component and the intersection of the escaping set with the Julia set contains continua. This intersection has an unbounded component if and only if the function has no Baker wandering domains. We also give estimates of the Hausdorff dimension and the upper box dimension of the Julia set of a meromorphic function with a logarithmic singularity over infinity. The above theorems are deduced from more general results concerning functions which have "direct or logarithmic tracts", …
