This thesis was motivated by a desire to understand the natural geometry of hyperbolic monopole moduli spaces. We take two approaches. Firstly we develop the twistor theory of singular hyperbolic monopoles and use it to study the geometry of their charge 1 moduli spaces. After this we introduce a new way to study the moduli spaces of both Euclidean and hyperbolic monopoles by applying Kodaira's deformation theory to the spectral curve. We obtain new results in both the Euclidean and hyperbolic cases. In particular we prove new cohomology vanishing theorems and find that the hyperbolic monopole moduli space appears to carry a new type of geometry whose complexification is similar to the complexification of hyperkähler geometry but with different reality conditions.
We show that for generic choices of parameters the moduli spaces of periodic monopoles (with singularities), i.e. monopoles on $\mathbb{R}^{2} \times \mathbb{S}^{1}$ possibly singular at a finite collection of points, are either empty or smooth hyperkähler manifolds. Furthermore, we prove an index theorem and therefore compute the dimension of the moduli spaces.
We discuss a 4[k/2]-dimensional complete hyperkähler submanifold of the (4k-4)-dimensional moduli space of strongly centred SU(2)-monopoles of charge k.
The low velocity dynamic of a doubly periodic monopole, also called a monopole wall or monowall for short, is described by geodesic motion on its moduli space. This moduli space is hyperkaehler and non-compact. We establish a relation between the Kaehler potential of this moduli space and the volume of a region in Euclidean three-space cut out by a plane arrangement associated with each monowall.
In this expository review we discuss various aspects of gauge theory. While the focus is on mathematics, wherever possible we make contact with theoretical high energy physics. Particular emphasis is placed on instantons and monopoles, which admit physical interpretation, and yield interesting and nontrivial mathematics. We give a clear and essentially self-contained exposition of the mathematical structure of the Seiberg-Witten monopole equations. Other topics include Donaldson's theorem on moduli spaces of monopoles, compactification of spaces of ASD connections, The Abelian monopole equatio…
Moduli spaces of doubly periodic monopoles, also called monopole walls or monowalls, are hyperkähler; thus, when four-dimensional, they are self-dual gravitational instantons. We find all monowalls with lowest number of moduli. Their moduli spaces can be identified, on the one hand, with Coulomb branches of five-dimensional supersymmetric quantum field theories on $\mathbb{R}^3\times T^2$ and, on the other hand, with moduli spaces of local Calabi-Yau metrics on the canonical bundle of a del Pezzo surface. We explore the asymptotic metric of these moduli spaces and compare our results with Seib…
We prove generic regularity and Uhlenbeck-type compactification theorems for the moduli spaces of PU(2)-monopoles. Generic regularity is NOT obtained in the usual way (by applying Sard theorem to a smooth parameterized moduli space), since the parameterized moduli space can be a priori singular. We explain why, using the standard order 0-perturbations, one cannot get the smoothness of the parameterized moduli space. (The same difficulty arises in the case of ASD-Spin^c moduli spaces, so the definition of the Spin^c-polynomial invariants should be revised.) We show that the singular locus of th…
This research announcement gives a brief report of the main results in our paper "PU(2) monopoles, I: Regularity, Uhlenbeck compactness, and transversality" (Journal of Differential Geometry, to appear). We describe the existence of perturbations for the PU(2) monopole equations, yielding both useful transversality properties and an Uhlenbeck compactification for this perturbed moduli space.
Donaldson has shown that the moduli space of monopoles $M_k$ is diffeomorphic to the space $\Rat_k$ of based rational maps from the two-sphere to itself. We use this diffeomorphism to give an explicit description of the bundle on $\Rat_k$ obtained by pushing out the index bundle from $M_k$. This gives an alternative and more explicit proof of some earlier results of Cohen and Jones.
We study generalisations to the structure groups U(n) of the familiar (abelian) Seiberg-Witten monopole equations on a four-manifold $X$ and their moduli spaces. For $n=1$ one obtains the classical monopole equations. For $n > 1$ our results indicate that there should not be any non-trivial gauge-theoretical invariants which are obtained by the scheme `evaluation of cohomology classes on the fundamental cycle of the moduli space'. For, if $b_2^+$ is positive the moduli space should be `cobordant' to the empty space because we can deform the equations so as the moduli space of the deformed equa…
We prove Witten's formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series modulo powers of degree $c+2$, with $c=-{1/4}(7χ+11σ)$, for four-manifolds obeying some mild conditions, where $χ$ and $σ$ are their Euler characteristic and signature. We use the moduli space of SO(3) monopoles as a cobordism between a link of the Donaldson moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections and links of the moduli spaces of Seiberg-Witten monopoles. Gluing techniques allow us to compute contributions from Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces lying in the first (or `one-bubble') level of the Uhlenbeck compactific…
Relative moduli spaces of periodic monopoles provide novel examples of Asymptotically Locally Flat hyperkahler manifolds. By considering the interactions between well-separated periodic monopoles, we infer the asymptotic behavior of their metrics. When the monopole moduli space is four-dimensional, this construction yields interesting examples of metrics with self-dual curvature (gravitational instantons). We discuss their topology and complex geometry. An alternative construction of these gravitational instantons using moduli spaces of Hitchin equations is also described.
The goal of this article was the S^1-equivariant transversality-problem and the compactification-problem for the moduli spaces of (perturbed) PU(2)-monopoles. A substantially improved version entitled "Moduli spaces of PU(2)-monopoles (revised version)" which gives simpler, clearer proofs of the transversality results, has been published on arxiv in June 99 and appeared in Asian J. Math, see Moduli spaces of PU(2)-Monopoles, Asian J. Math. Vol. 4, No. 2 (2000), 391-436.
In this note we show that for the group G = U(N) the space of Hecke modifications of a rank N vector bundle over a Riemann surface C coincides with the moduli space of solutions of certain non-abelian vortex equations over C . Through the recent work of Kapustin and Witten this then leads to an isomorphism between the moduli space of vortices and the moduli space of singular monopoles on the product of C with a closed interval I .
We prove the existence of perturbations for the PU(2) monopole equations, yielding transversality on the complement of the anti-self-dual or reducible solutions, and the existence of an Uhlenbeck compactification for the moduli space of solutions to these perturbed PU(2) monopole equations. In December 1994, V. Pidstrigach and A. Tyurin and then others proposed a method to prove Witten's conjecture concerning the relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. Their proposal uses a moduli space of solutions to the PU(2) monopole equations, which are a nat…
This is the third installment in our series of articles (dg-ga/9712005, dg-ga/9710032) on the application of the PU(2) monopole equations to prove Witten's conjecture (hep-th/9411102) concerning the relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. The moduli space of solutions to the PU(2) monopole equations provides a noncompact cobordism between links of compact moduli spaces of U(1) monopoles of Seiberg-Witten type and the moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections, which appear as singularities in this larger moduli space. In this paper we prove …
We study complexified Bogomolny monopoles using the complex linear extension of the Hodge star operator; these monopoles can be interpreted as solutions to the Bogomolny equation with a complex gauge group. Alternatively, these equations can be obtained from dimensional reduction of the Haydys instanton equations to three dimensions, thus we call them Haydys monopoles. We find that (under mild hypotheses) the smooth locus of the moduli space of finite energy Haydys monopoles on $\mathbb{R}^3$ is a Kähler manifold containing the ordinary Bogomolny moduli space as a minimal Lagrangian submanifol…
In this paper, the moduli space of singular unitary Hermitian--Einstein monopoles on the product of a circle and a Riemann surface is shown to correspond to a moduli space of stable pairs on the Riemann surface. These pairs consist of a holomorphic vector bundle on the surface and a meromorphic automorphism of the bundle. The singularities of this automorphism correspond to the singularities of the singular monopole. We then consider the complex geometry of the moduli space; in particular, we compute dimensions, both from the complex geometric and the gauge theoretic point of view.
The geometry of minimal surfaces generated by charge 2 Bogomolny monopoles on 3-dimensional Euclidean space is described in terms of the moduli parameter k. We find that the distribution of Gaussian curvature on the surface reflects the monopole structure. This is elucidated by the behaviour of the Gauss maps of the minimal surfaces.
This is the first of two articles in which we give a proof - for a broad class of four-manifolds - of Witten's conjecture that the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series coincide, at least through terms of degree less than or equal to c-2, where c is a linear combination of the Euler characteristic and signature of the four-manifold. This article is a revision of sections 1-3 of an earlier version of the article dg-ga/9712005, now split into two parts, while a revision of sections 4-7 of that earlier version appears in a recently updated dg-ga/9712005. In the present article, we construct virtual…
In this article we complete the proof---for a broad class of four-manifolds---of Witten's conjecture that the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series coincide, at least through terms of degree less than or equal to c-2, where c is a linear combination of the Euler characteristic and signature of the four-manifold. This article is a revision of sections 4--7 of an earlier version, while a revision of sections 1--3 of that earlier version now appear in a separate companion article (math.DG/0007190). Here, we use our computations of Chern classes for the virtual normal bundles for the Seiberg-Witten …
Let $X=\mathbb{C}\timesΣ$ be the product of the complex plane and a compact Riemann surface. We establish a classification theorem of solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equation on $X$ with finite analytic energy. The spin bundle $S^+\to X$ splits as $L^+\oplus L^-$. When $2-2g\leq c_1(S^+)[Σ]<0$, the moduli space is in bijection with the moduli space of pairs $((L^+,\bar{\partial}), f)$ where $(L^+,\bar{\partial})$ is a holomorphic structure on $L^+$ and $f: \mathbb{C}\to H^0(Σ, L^+,\bar{\partial})$ is a polynomial map. Moreover, the solution has analytic energy $-4π^2d\cdot c_1(S^+)[Σ]$ if $f$ …
Using quantum field-theoretic arguments, Witten has established a relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. In this survey article, we describe the program to prove this relation using a moduli space of PU(2) = SO(3) monopoles as a cobordism between the Donaldson moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections and moduli spaces of U(1) monopoles. We provide an overview of some of our transversality and Uhlenbeck compactness results for PU(2) monopoles, along with some of our calculations of Donaldson invariants in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants…
We prove that the moduli space of solutions to the PU(2) monopole equations is a smooth manifold of the expected dimension for simple, generic parameters such as (and including) the Riemannian metric on the given four-manifold. In a previous article, dg-ga/9710032, we proved transversality using an extension of the holonomy-perturbation methods of Donaldson, Floer, and Taubes, together with the existence of an Uhlenbeck compactification for the perturbed moduli space. However, it remained an important and interesting question to see whether there were simpler, more intrinsic alternatives to th…
We study moduli spaces of Seiberg-Witten monopoles over spin^c Riemannian 4-manifolds with long necks and/or tubular ends. This first part discusses compactness, exponential decay, and transversality. As applications we prove two vanishing theorems for Seiberg-Witten invariants.
We describe compactifications of the moduli spaces of SU(2) monopoles on R3 as manifolds with corners, with respect to which the hyperKaehler metrics admit asymptotic expansions up to each boundary face. The boundary faces encode monopoles of charge k decomposing into widely separated monopoles of lower charge, and the leading order asymptotic of the metric generalizes the one obtained by Gibbons, Manton and Bielawski in the case of complete decomposition into monopoles of unit charge. From the structure of the compactifications, we prove part of Sen's conjecture for the L2 cohomology of the s…
This article is based on a lecture by the first author at the International Georgia Topology Conference 2001 (Athens, Georgia) and the Mathematische Arbeitstagung 2001 (Bonn, Germany). We sketch a proof of Witten's formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series modulo powers of degree c+2, with c = -{1/4}(7 chi + 11 sigma), for four-manifolds obeying some mild conditions, where chi and sigma are their Euler characteristic and signature. We use the moduli space of SO(3) monopoles as a cobordism between a link of the Donaldson moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections and links …
Motivated by strong desire to understand the natural geometry of moduli spaces of hyperbolic monopoles, we introduce and study a new type of geometry: pluricomplex geometry. It is a generalisation of hypercomplex geometry: we still have a 2-sphere of complex structures, but they no longer behave like unit imaginary quaternions. We still require, however, that the 2-sphere of complex structures determines a decomposition of the complexified tangent space as tensor product of C^{2n} and C^2. Among interesting properties of pluricomplex manifold is the existence of a canonical torsion free connec…
An interesting theme in complex differential geometry is to find a correspondence between algebraic objects and differential geometric objects. One of the most attractive is the non-abelian Hodge theory of Simpson. In this paper, pursuing an analogue of the non-abelian Hodge theory in the context of $q$-difference modules, we study Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondences between doubly periodic monopoles and parabolic $q$-difference modules, depending on twistor parameters.
We introduce the concept of Spin^G-structure in a SO-bundle, where $G\subset U(V)$ is a compact Lie group containing $-id_V$. We study and classify $Spin^G(4)$-structures on 4-manifolds, we introduce the G-Monopole equations associated with a $Spin^G$-structure. On Kaehler surfaces a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence can be proved for the corresponding moduli spaces. Using this complex geometric interpretation, we determine explicitely a moduli space of "PU(2)-Monopoles" on $¶^2$, we describe its Uhlenbeck compactification, as well as the Donaldson- and the abelian locus.
