Singular Hermitian-Einstein monopoles on the product of a circle and a Riemann surface

Paper revised for clarity of the arguments. We have now a cleaner and better proof of the irreducibility/stable correspondence, and of the fact that the monopole has the correct weight at the singularity. The construction of the bundle supporting the initial metric under the heat flow is much more explicit
In this paper, the moduli space of singular unitary Hermitian--Einstein monopoles on the product of a circle and a Riemann surface is shown to correspond to a moduli space of stable pairs on the Riemann surface. These pairs consist of a holomorphic vector bundle on the surface and a meromorphic automorphism of the bundle. The singularities of this automorphism correspond to the singularities of the singular monopole. We then consider the complex geometry of the moduli space; in particular, we compute dimensions, both from the complex geometric and the gauge theoretic point of view.
The Seiberg-Witten equation with multiple spinors generalises the classical Seiberg-Witten equation in dimension three. In contrast to the classical case, the moduli space of solutions $\mathcal{M}$ can be non-compact due to the appearance of so-called Fueter sections. In the absence of Fueter sections we define a signed count of points in $\mathcal{M}$ and show its invariance under small perturbations. We then study the equation on the product of a Riemann surface and a circle, describing $\mathcal{M}$ in terms of holomorphic data over the surface. We define analytic and algebro-geometric com…
For a compact 3-manifold $M$ which is a circle bundle over a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ with even Euler number $e(M)$, and with a Riemannian metric compatible with the bundle projection, there exists a compact minimal surface $S$ in $M$. $S$ is embedded and is a section of the restriction of the bundle to the complement of a finite number of points in $Σ$.
We classify positively curved Alexandrov spaces of dimension 4 with an isometric circle action up to equivariant homeomorphism, subject to a certain additional condition on the infinitesimal geometry near fixed points which we conjecture is always satisfied. As a corollary, we also classify positively curved Riemannian orbifolds of dimension 4 with an isometric circle action.
Kapustin and Witten associate a Hecke modification of a holomorphic bundle over a Riemann surface to a singular monopole on a Riemannian surface times an interval satisfying prescribed boundary conditions. We prove existence and uniqueness of singular monopoles satisfying prescribed boundary conditions for any given Hecke modification data confirming the underlying geometric invariant theory principle.
We prove the existence of non-trivial irreducible SU(2)-monopoles with Dirac singularities on any rational homology 3-sphere, equipped with any Riemannian metric, using a gluing construction.
We compute eta invariants of various Dirac type operators on circle bundles over Riemann surfaces via two approaches: an adiabatic approach based on the results of Bismut-Cheeger-Dai and a direct elementary one. These results, coupled with some delicate spectral flow computations are then used to determine the virtual dimensions of Seiberg-Witten finite energy moduli spaces on any 4-manifold bounding unions of circle bundles. This belated paper should be regarded as the analytical backbone of dg-ga/9711006. There, we indicated only what changes are needed to extend the methods of the present p…
With the help of hyper-ideal circle pattern theory, we have developed a discrete version of the classical uniformization theorems for surfaces represented as finite branched covers over the Riemann sphere as well as compact polyhedral surfaces with non-positive curvature. We show that in the case of such surfaces discrete uniformization via hyper-ideal circle patterns always exists and is unique. We also propose a numerical algorithm, utilizing convex optimization, that constructs the desired discrete uniformization.
Riemann zero mean curvature examples in the Lorentz-Minkowski space are surfaces with zero mean curvature foliated by circles contained in parallel planes. In contrast to the Euclidean case, this family of surfaces presents new and rich features because of the variety of types of circles. In this paper, we give a geometric description of these examples when the circles are contained in spacelike planes and timelike planes.
We determine all Finsler metrics of Randers type for which the Riemannian part is a scalar multiple of the Euclidean metric, on an open subset of the Euclidean plane, whose geodesics are circles. We show that the Riemannian part must be of constant Gaussian curvature, and that for every such Riemannian metric there is a class of Randers metrics satisfying the condition, determined up to the addition of a total derivative, depending on a single parameter. As one of several applications we exhibit a Finsler metric whose geodesics are the oriented horocycles in the Poincare disk, in each of the t…
It is a classical theorem of Loewner that the systole of a Riemannian torus can be bounded in terms of its area. We answer a question of a similar flavor of Robert Young showing that if $T$ is a Riemannian 2-torus with boundary in $\mathbb R ^n$, such that the boundary curve is a standard unit circle, then the length of the shortest non-contractible loop in $T$ is bounded in terms of the area of $T$.
We study moduli spaces of Seiberg-Witten monopoles over spin^c Riemannian 4-manifolds with long necks and/or tubular ends. This first part discusses compactness, exponential decay, and transversality. As applications we prove two vanishing theorems for Seiberg-Witten invariants.
Self dual symmetric R-spaces have special curves, called circles, introduced by Burstall, Donaldson, Pedit and Pinkall in 2011, whose definition does not involve the choice of any Riemannian metric. We characterize the elements of the big transformation group G of a self dual symmetric R-space M as those diffeomorphisms of M sending circles in circles. Besides, although these curves belong to the realm of the invariants by G, we manage to describe them in Riemannian geometric terms: Given a circle c in M, there is a maximal compact subgroup K of G such that c, except for a projective reparamet…
We demonstrate an obstruction to finding certain splittings of four-manifolds along sufficiently twisted circle bundles over Riemann surfaces, arising from Seiberg-Witten theory. These obstructions are used to show a non-splitting result for algebraic surfaces of general type.
We prove an analogue of the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence oncompact connected 3-folds that is fibered on orbifold Riemann surfaces and satisfy an integrability condition, which contains compact connected Sasakian 3-folds. We define mini-holomorphic bundles on such 3-folds and the algebraic Dirac-type singularities on mini-holomorphic bundles, and prove that there exists a special Hermitian metric (admissible BHE-metric) on a Dirac-type singular mini-holomorphic bundle if the bundle satisfies a slope stability.

In this short note, by using a general three circle theorem, we show the rigidity of the sharp Bezout estimate first found by Gang Liu on nonnegatively curved Riemann surface.
In this note we show that for the group G = U(N) the space of Hecke modifications of a rank N vector bundle over a Riemann surface C coincides with the moduli space of solutions of certain non-abelian vortex equations over C . Through the recent work of Kapustin and Witten this then leads to an isomorphism between the moduli space of vortices and the moduli space of singular monopoles on the product of C with a closed interval I .
In this paper we study surfaces in Euclidean 3-space foliated by pieces of circles and that satisfy a Weingarten condition of type $a H+b K=c$, where $a,b$ and $c$ are constant and $H$ and $K$ denote the mean curvature and the Gauss curvature respectively. We prove that a such surface must be a surface of revolution, a Riemann minimal surface or a generalized cone.
We compute a recently introduced geometric invariant of stricly pseudoconvex CR 3-manifolds for certain circle invariant spherical CR structures on Seifert manifolds. We give applications to the problem of filling the CR manifold by a complex hyperbolic manifold, and more generally by a Kaehler-Einstein or an Einstein metric.
We study supersymmetric deformations of N = 4 quantum mechanics with a Kahler target space admitting a holomorphic isometry. We show that the twisted mass deformation generalises to a deformation constructed from matrix-valued functions of the moment map, which obey the Nahm equations. We also explain how N = 4 supersymmetry implies that the Berry connection on the vacuum bundle for this theory satisfies the BPS monopole equations. In the case where the target space is a Riemann sphere, our analysis reduces to the standard Nahm construction of monopoles. This generalises an earlier result by S…
Thurston's circle packing approximation of the Riemann Mapping (proven to give the Riemann Mapping in the limit by Rodin-Sullivan) is largely based on the theorem that any topological disk with a circle packing metric can be deformed into a circle packing metric in the disk with boundary circles internally tangent to the circle. The main proofs of the uniformization use hyperbolic volumes (Andreev) or hyperbolic circle packings (by Beardon and Stephenson). We reformulate these problems into a Euclidean context, which allows more general discrete conformal structures and boundary conditions. Th…
We present an explicit formula for the topology and H-flux of the T-dual of a general type II compactification, significantly generalizing earlier results. Our results apply to T-dualities with respect to any circle action on spacetime. As before, T-duality exchanges type IIA and type IIB string theories. A new consequence is that the T-dual spacetime is a singular space when the fixed point set is non-empty; the singularities correspond to Kaluza-Klein monopoles. We propose that the Ramond-Ramond charges of type II string theories on the singular dual are classified by twisted equivariant coh…
A zero mean curvature surface in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space is said to be of Riemann-type if it is foliated by circles and at most countably many straight lines in parallel planes. We classify all zero mean curvature surfaces of Riemann-type according to their causal characters, and as a corollary, we prove that if a zero mean curvature surface of Riemann-type has exactly two causal characters, then the lightlike part of the surface is a part of a straight line.
Fix a point $t_0$ in the circle $S^1$. The space $J^k(t_0, \mathbb{P}^1)$ of $k$-jets at $t_0$ of $C^{\infty}$ maps from $S^1$ to the Riemann sphere $\mathbb{P}^1$ is a $k+1$ dimensional complex algebraic manifold. We identify a class of holomorphic sections of line bundles on $J^k(t_0, \mathbb{P}^1)$.
We introduce a global Cauchy-Riemann($CR$)-invariant and discuss its behavior on the moduli space of $CR$-structures. We argue that this study is related to the Smale conjecture in 3-topology and the problem of counting complex structures. Furthermore, we propose a contact-analogue of Ray-Singer's analytic torsion. This ``contact torsion'' is expected to be able to distinguish among ``contact lens'' spaces. We also propose the study of a certain kind of monopole equation associated with a contact structure.
We continue the study of linear families of contact forms on 3-manifolds begun in our paper `Contact geometry and complex surfaces'. The present paper introduces Teichmuller and moduli spaces for so-called taut contact circles. By constructing a developing map for taut contact circles, we show that these geometrically defined deformation spaces are equivalent to certain spaces of representations of the fundamental group in appropriate Lie groups. Furthermore, we relate these deformation spaces to `classical' Teichmuller theory of Riemann surfaces and orbifolds.
We study complexified Bogomolny monopoles using the complex linear extension of the Hodge star operator; these monopoles can be interpreted as solutions to the Bogomolny equation with a complex gauge group. Alternatively, these equations can be obtained from dimensional reduction of the Haydys instanton equations to three dimensions, thus we call them Haydys monopoles. We find that (under mild hypotheses) the smooth locus of the moduli space of finite energy Haydys monopoles on $\mathbb{R}^3$ is a Kähler manifold containing the ordinary Bogomolny moduli space as a minimal Lagrangian submanifol…
We study special circle bundles over two elementary moduli spaces of meromorphic quadratic differentials with real periods denoted by $\mathcal Q_0^{\mathbb R}(-7)$ and $\mathcal Q^{\mathbb R}_0([-3]^2)$. The space $\mathcal Q_0^{\mathbb R}(-7)$ is the moduli space of meromorphic quadratic differentials on the Riemann sphere with one pole of order 7 with real periods; it appears naturally in the study of a neighbourhood of the Witten's cycle $W_1$ in the combinatorial model based on Jenkins-Strebel quadratic differentials of $\mathcal M_{g,n}$. The space $\mathcal Q^{\mathbb R}_0([-3]^2)$ is t…
In this paper, we construct and classify minimal surfaces foliated by horizontal constant curvature curves in product manifolds $M \times \R$, where $M$ is the hyperbolic plane, the Euclidean plane or the two dimensional sphere. The main tool is the existence of a Jacobi field which characterize the property to be foliated in circles and geodesics in these product manifolds. It is related to harmonic maps.
We deal with minimal surfaces in the unit sphere $S^3$, which are one-parameter families of circles. Minimal surfaces in $\R^3$ foliated by circles were first investigated by Riemann, and a hundred years later Lawson constructed examples of such surfaces in $S^3$. We prove that in $S^3$ there are only two types of minimal surfaces foliated by circles, crossing the principal lines at a constant angle. The first type surfaces are foliated by great circles, which are bisectrices of the principal lines, and we show that these minimal surfaces are the well-known examples of Lawson. The second type …
Let $X=\mathbb{C}\timesΣ$ be the product of the complex plane and a compact Riemann surface. We establish a classification theorem of solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equation on $X$ with finite analytic energy. The spin bundle $S^+\to X$ splits as $L^+\oplus L^-$. When $2-2g\leq c_1(S^+)[Σ]<0$, the moduli space is in bijection with the moduli space of pairs $((L^+,\bar{\partial}), f)$ where $(L^+,\bar{\partial})$ is a holomorphic structure on $L^+$ and $f: \mathbb{C}\to H^0(Σ, L^+,\bar{\partial})$ is a polynomial map. Moreover, the solution has analytic energy $-4π^2d\cdot c_1(S^+)[Σ]$ if $f$ …
