We study moduli spaces of Seiberg-Witten monopoles over spin^c Riemannian 4-manifolds with long necks and/or tubular ends. This first part discusses compactness, exponential decay, and transversality. As applications we prove two vanishing theorems for Seiberg-Witten invariants.

Monopoles over 4-manifolds containing long necks, II

We establish a gluing theorem for monopoles over 4--manifolds containing long necks. The theorem is stated in terms of an ungluing map defined explicitly in terms of data that appear naturally in applications. Orientations of moduli spaces are handled using Benevieri--Furi's concept of orientations of Fredholm operators of index 0.

The Haydys monopole equation

We study complexified Bogomolny monopoles using the complex linear extension of the Hodge star operator; these monopoles can be interpreted as solutions to the Bogomolny equation with a complex gauge group. Alternatively, these equations can be obtained from dimensional reduction of the Haydys instanton equations to three dimensions, thus we call them Haydys monopoles. All Exact Solutions of a 1/4 Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield Equation

We obtain all possible solutions of a 1/4 Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield equation exactly, containing configurations made of walls, vortices and monopoles in the Higgs phase. We use supersymmetric U(N_C) gauge theories with eight supercharges with N_F fundamental hypermultiplets in the strong coupling limit. The moduli space for the composite solitons is found to be the space of all holomorphic maps from a complex plane to the wall moduli space found recently, the deformed complex Grassmann manifold. Monopoles in the Higgs phase are also found in U(1) gauge theory.

Non-abelian Seiberg-Witten theory and projectively stable pairs

We introduce the concept of Spin^G-structure in a SO-bundle, where $G\subset U(V)$ is a compact Lie group containing $-id_V$. We study and classify $Spin^G(4)$-structures on 4-manifolds, we introduce the G-Monopole equations associated with a $Spin^G$-structure. On Kaehler surfaces a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence can be proved for the corresponding moduli spaces. Using this complex geometric interpretation, we determine explicitely a moduli space of "PU(2)-Monopoles" on $¶^2$, we describe its Uhlenbeck compactification, as well as the Donaldson- and the abelian locus.

The Ricci flow of the `RP3 geon' and noncompact manifolds with essential minimal spheres

It is well-known that the Ricci flow of a closed 3-manifold containing an essential minimal 2-sphere will fail to exist after a finite time. Conversely, the Ricci flow of a complete, rotationally symmetric, asymptotically flat manifold containing no minimal spheres is immortal. We discuss an intermediate case, that of a complete, noncompact manifold with essential minimal hypersphere.
