We present a solution to a problem suggested by Philippe Biane: We prove that a certain Plancherel-type probability distribution on partitions converges, as partitions get large, to a new determinantal random point process on the set {0,1,2,...} of nonnegative integers. This can be viewed as an edge limit ransition. The limit process is determined by a correlation kernel on {0,1,2,...} which is expressed through the Hermite polynomials, we call it the discrete Hermite kernel. The proof is based on a simple argument which derives convergence of correlation kernels from convergence of unbounded self-adjoint difference operators.
Our approach can also be applied to a number of other probabilistic models. As an example, we discuss a bulk limit for one more Plancherel-type model of random partitions.
In recent years increasing attention has been paid on the area of supercharacter theories, especially to those of the upper unitriangular group. A particular supercharacter theory, in which supercharacters are indexed by set partitions, has several interesting properties, which make it object of further study. We define a natural generalization of the Plancherel measure, called superplancherel measure, and prove a limit shape result for a random set partition according to this distribution. We also give a description of the asymptotical behavior of two set partition statistics related to the s…
In this work, we obtain the central limit theorem for fluctuations of Young diagrams around their limit shape in the bulk of the "spectrum" of partitions of a large integer n (under the Plancherel measure). More specifically, we show that, under the suitable normalization (growing as the square root of log n), the corresponding random process converges, in the sense of finite dimensional distributions, to a Gaussian process with independent values. The proof uses heavily the determinantal structure of the correlation functions and is based on the application of the Costin-Lebowitz-Soshnikov ce…
We study random partitions $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,...,λ_d)$ of $n$ whose length is not bigger than a fixed number $d$. Suppose a random partition $λ$ is distributed according to the Jack measure, which is a deformation of the Plancherel measure with a positive parameter $α>0$. We prove that for all $α>0$, in the limit as $n \to \infty$, the joint distribution of scaled $λ_1,..., λ_d$ converges to the joint distribution of some random variables from a traceless Gaussian $β$-ensemble with $β=2/α$. We also give a short proof of Regev's asymptotic theorem for the sum of $β$-powers of $f^λ$, the number of sta…
We study asymptotics of traces of (noncommutative) monomials formed by images of certain elements of the universal enveloping algebra of the infinite-dimensional unitary group in its Plancherel representations. We prove that they converge to (commutative) moments of a Gaussian process that can be viewed as a collection of simply yet nontrivially correlated two-dimensional Gaussian Free Fields. The limiting process has previously arisen via the global scaling limit of spectra for submatrices of Wigner Hermitian random matrices. This note is an announcement, proofs will appear elsewhere.
In this paper, we are interested in the asymptotic size of rows and columns of a random Young diagram under a natural deformation of the Plancherel measure coming from Hecke algebras. The first lines of such diagrams are typically of order $n$, so it does not fit in the context studied by P. Biane and P. Śniady. Using the theory of polynomial functions on Young diagrams of Kerov and Olshanski, we are able to compute explicitly the first- and second-order asymptotics of the length of the first rows. Our method works also for other measures, for instance those coming from Schur-Weyl representati…

We consider discrete orthogonal polynomial ensembles which are discrete analogues of the orthogonal polynomial ensembles in random matrix theory. These ensembles occur in certain problems in combinatorial probability and can be thought of as probability measures on partitions. The Meixner ensemble is related to a two-dimensional directed growth model, and the Charlier ensemble is related to the lengths of weakly increasing subsequences in random words. The Krawtchouk ensemble occurs in connection with zig-zag paths in random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, and also in a certain simplified…
Formulae of Plancherel-Rotach type are established for the average characteristic polynomials of certain Hermitian products of rectangular Ginibre random matrices on the region of zeros. These polynomials form a general class of multiple orthogonal hypergeometric polynomials generalizing the classical Laguerre polynomials. The proofs are based on a multivariate version of the complex method of saddle points. After suitable rescaling the asymptotic zero distributions for the polynomials are studied and shown to coincide with the Fuss-Catalan distributions. Moreover, introducing appropriate coor…
We show that the symplectic and orthogonal character analogues of Okounkov's Schur measure (on integer partitions) are determinantal, with explicit correlation kernels. We apply this to prove certain Borodin-Okounkov-Gessel-type results concerning Toeplitz+Hankel and Fredholm determinants; a Szegő-type limit theorem; an edge Baik-Deift-Johansson-type asymptotical result for certain symplectic and orthogonal analogues of the poissonized Plancherel measure; and a similar result for actual poissonized Plancherel measures supported on "almost symmetric" partitions.
We consider a Markov evolution of lozenge tilings of a quarter-plane and study its asymptotics at large times. One of the boundary rays serves as a reflecting wall. We observe frozen and liquid regions, prove convergence of the local correlations to translation-invariant Gibbs measures in the liquid region, and obtain new discrete Jacobi and symmetric Pearcey determinantal point processes near the wall. The model can be viewed as the one-parameter family of Plancherel measures for the infinite-dimensional orthogonal group, and we use this interpretation to derive the determinantal formula for …
In this paper we compute the precise asymptotics of the variance of linear statistic of descents on a growing interval for Plancherel Young diagrams (following Vershik and Kerov, diagrams are considered rotated by $π/4$). We also give an example of a local configuration with linearly growing variance in a fixed regime and prove the central limit theorem for this configuration in the given regime.
We pursue applications for symplectic Plancherel growth based on a repulsion phenomenon arising in its diffusion limit and on intermediate representation theory underlying its correlation structure. Under diffusive scaling, the dynamics converge to interlaced reflecting Brownian motions with a wall that achieve Dyson non-colliding dynamics. We exhibit non-degeneracy of constraint in this coupled system by deriving a path property that quantifies repulsion between particles coinciding in the limit. We then identify consistent series of Plancherel measures for $Sp(\infty)$ that reflect the odd s…
Using techniques from integrable systems, we obtain a number of exact results for random partitions. In particular, we prove a simple formula for correlation functions of what we call the Schur measure on partitions (which is a far reaching generalization of the Plancherel measure, see math.CO/9905032) and also show that these correlations functions are tau-functions for the Toda lattice hierarchy. Also we give a new proof of the formula due to Bloch and the author, see alg-geom/9712009, for the so called n-point functions of the uniform measure on partitions and comment on the local structure…
In this paper we determine two asymptotic results for Jack measures on partitions, a model defined by two specializations of Jack polynomials proposed by Borodin-Olshanski in [European J. Combin. 26.6 (2005): 795-834]. Assuming these two specializations are the same, we derive limit shapes and Gaussian fluctuations for the anisotropic profiles of these random partitions in three asymptotic regimes associated to diverging, fixed, and vanishing values of the Jack parameter. To do so, we introduce a generalization of Motzkin paths we call "ribbon paths", show for general Jack measures that certai…
The shifted Schur measure introduced by Tracy and Widom is a measure on the set of all strict partitions, which is defined by Schur $Q$-functions. The main aim of this paper is to calculate the correlation function of this measure, which is given by a pfaffian. As an application, we prove that a limit distribution of $λ_j$'s with respect to a shifted version of the Plancherel measure for symmetric groups is identical with the corresponding distribution of the original Plancherel measure. Further we give expressions of the mean value and the variance of the size of a partition with respect to t…
We study edge asymptotics of poissonized Plancherel-type measures on skew Young diagrams (integer partitions). These measures can be seen as generalizations of those studied by Baik--Deift--Johansson and Baik--Rains in resolving Ulam's problem on longest increasing subsequences of random permutations and the last passage percolation (corner growth) discrete versions thereof. Moreover they interpolate between said measures and the uniform measure on partitions. In the new KPZ-like 1/3 exponent edge scaling limit with logarithmic corrections, we find new probability distributions generalizing th…
We study the eigenvalues of a Laplace-Beltrami operator defined on the set of the symmetric polynomials, where the eigenvalues are expressed in terms of partitions of integers. By assigning partitions with the restricted uniform measure, the restricted Jack measure, the uniform measure or the Plancherel measure, we prove that the global distribution of the eigenvalues is asymptotically a new distribution $μ$, the Gamma distribution, the Gumbel distribution and the Tracy-Widom distribution, respectively. An explicit representation of $μ$ is obtained by a function of independent random variables…
We construct a probability model seemingly unrelated to the considered stochastic process of coagulation and fragmentation. By proving for this model the local limit theorem, we establish the asymptotic formula for the partition function of the equilibrium measure for a wide class of parameter functions of the process. This formula proves the conjecture stated in [dgg] for the above class of processes. The method used goes back to A.Khintchine.
We introduce a two parameter ($α, β>-1$) family of interacting particle systems with determinantal correlation kernels expressible in terms of Jacobi polynomials $\{ P^{(α, β)}_k \}_{k \geq 0}$. The family includes previously discovered Plancherel measures for the infinite-dimensional orthogonal and symplectic groups. The construction uses certain BC-type orthogonal polynomials which generalize the characters of these groups. The local asymptotics near the hard edge where one expects distinguishing behavior yields the multi-time $(α, β)$-dependent discrete Jacobi kernel and the multi-time $β$-…
Based on the multivariate saddle point method we study the asymptotic behavior of the characteristic polynomials associated to Wishart type random matrices that are formed as products consisting of independent standard complex Gaussian and a truncated Haar distributed unitary random matrix. These polynomials form a general class of hypergeometric functions of type \(_2 F_r\). We describe the oscillatory behavior on the asymptotic interval of zeros by means of formulae of Plancherel-Rotach type and subsequently use it to obtain the limiting distribution of the suitably rescaled zeros. Moreover,…
We study large random partitions boxed into a rectangle and coming from skew Howe duality, or alternatively from dual Schur measures. As the sides of the rectangle go to infinity, we obtain: 1) limit shape results for the profiles generalizing the Vershik--Kerov--Logan--Shepp curve; and 2) universal edge asymptotic results for the first parts in the form of the Tracy--Widom distribution, as well as less-universal critical regime results introduced by Gravner, Tracy and Widom. We do this for a large class of Schur parameters going beyond the Plancherel or principal specializations previously st…
We obtain Plancherel-Rotach type asymptotics valid in all regions of the complex plane for orthogonal polynomials with varying weights of the form $e^{-NV(x)}$ on the real line, assuming that $V$ has only two Lipschitz continuous derivatives and that the corresponding equilibrium measure has typical support properties. As an application we extend the universality class for bulk and edge asymptotics of eigenvalue statistics in unitary invariant Hermitian random matrix theory. Our methodology involves developing a new technique of asymptotic analysis for matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems with nona…
In the paper we develop an approach to asymptotic normality through factorial cumulants. Factorial cumulants arise in the same manner from factorial moments, as do (ordinary) cumulants from (ordinary) moments. Another tool we exploit is a new identity for "moments" of partitions of numbers. The general limiting result is then used to (re-)derive asymptotic normality for several models including classical discrete distributions, occupancy problems in some generalized allocation schemes and two models related to negative multinomial distribution.
An integer partition is called graphical if it is the degree sequence of a simple graph. We prove that the probability that a uniformly chosen partition of size $n$ is graphical decreases to zero faster than $n^{-.003}$, answering a question of Pittel. A lower bound of $n^{-1/2}$ was proven by Erdős and Richmond, and so this demonstrates that the probability decreases polynomially. Key to our argument is an asymptotic result of Pittel characterizing the joint distribution of the first rows and columns of a uniformly random partition, combined with a characterization of graphical partitions due…
We consider a spatial branching process with emigration in which children either remain at the same site as their parents or migrate to new locations and then found their own colonies. We are interested in asymptotics of the partition of the total population into colonies for large populations with rare migrations. Under appropriate regimes, we establish weak convergence of the rescaled partition to some random measure that is constructed from the restriction of a Poisson point measure to a certain random region, and whose cumulant solves a simple integral equation.
In the present paper, we investigate the collapsed phase of the interacting partially-directed self-avoiding walk (IPDSAW) that was introduced in Zwanzig and Lauritzen (1968). We provide sharp asymptotics of the partition function inside the collapsed phase, proving rigorously a conjecture formulated in Guttmann (2015) and Owczarek et al. (1993). As a by-product of our result, we obtain that, inside the collapsed phase, a typical IPDSAW trajectory is made of a unique macroscopic bead, consisting of a concatenation of long vertical stretches of alternating signs, outside which only finitely man…
We introduce a universality theorem for functionals of measures on partitions which "behave like" the Ewens measure. Various limit theorems for the Ewens measure, most notably the Poisson-Dirichlet limit for the longest parts, the functional central limit theorem for the number of parts, and the Erdos-Turan limit for the product of parts, extend to these asymptotically Ewens measures as easy corollaries. Our major contributions are: (1) extending the classes of measures for which these limit theorems hold; (2) characterising universality by a single, easily-checked criterion; and (3) greatly s…
We study two types of probability measures on the set of integer partitions of $n$ with at most $m$ parts. The first one chooses the random partition with a chance related to its largest part only. We then obtain the limiting distributions of all of the parts together and that of the largest part as $n$ tends to infinity while $m$ is fixed or tends to infinity. In particular, if $m$ goes to infinity not too fast, the largest part satisfies the central limit theorem. The second measure is very general. It includes the Dirichlet distribution and the uniform distribution as special cases. We deri…
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct parts where the largest part is at most $t\sqrt{n}$ for fixed $t \in \mathbb{R}$. Our method follows a probabilistic approach of Romik, who gave a simpler proof of Szekeres' asymptotic formula for distinct parts partitions when instead the number of parts is bounded by $t\sqrt{n}$. Although equivalent to a circle method/saddle-point method calculation, the probabilistic approach predicts the shape of the asymptotic formula, to some degree.
