In this work, we obtain the central limit theorem for fluctuations of Young diagrams around their limit shape in the bulk of the "spectrum" of partitions of a large integer n (under the Plancherel measure). More specifically, we show that, under the suitable normalization (growing as the square root of log n), the corresponding random process converges, in the sense of finite dimensional distributions, to a Gaussian process with independent values. The proof uses heavily the determinantal structure of the correlation functions and is based on the application of the Costin-Lebowitz-Soshnikov central limit theorem. At the spectrum edges, the fluctuation asymptotics is expressed in terms of the largest members of the Airy ensemble; in particular, at the upper edge the limit distribution appears to be discrete (without any normalization). These results admit an elegant symmetric reformulation under the rotation of Young diagrams by 45 degrees, where the normalization no longer depends on the location of the spectrum point. We also discuss the link of our central limit theorem with an earlier result by S.V. Kerov on the convergence to a generalized Gaussian process.
In recent years increasing attention has been paid on the area of supercharacter theories, especially to those of the upper unitriangular group. A particular supercharacter theory, in which supercharacters are indexed by set partitions, has several interesting properties, which make it object of further study. We define a natural generalization of the Plancherel measure, called superplancherel measure, and prove a limit shape result for a random set partition according to this distribution. We also give a description of the asymptotical behavior of two set partition statistics related to the s…
We present a solution to a problem suggested by Philippe Biane: We prove that a certain Plancherel-type probability distribution on partitions converges, as partitions get large, to a new determinantal random point process on the set {0,1,2,...} of nonnegative integers. This can be viewed as an edge limit ransition. The limit process is determined by a correlation kernel on {0,1,2,...} which is expressed through the Hermite polynomials, we call it the discrete Hermite kernel. The proof is based on a simple argument which derives convergence of correlation kernels from convergence of unbounded …
We study random partitions $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,...,λ_d)$ of $n$ whose length is not bigger than a fixed number $d$. Suppose a random partition $λ$ is distributed according to the Jack measure, which is a deformation of the Plancherel measure with a positive parameter $α>0$. We prove that for all $α>0$, in the limit as $n \to \infty$, the joint distribution of scaled $λ_1,..., λ_d$ converges to the joint distribution of some random variables from a traceless Gaussian $β$-ensemble with $β=2/α$. We also give a short proof of Regev's asymptotic theorem for the sum of $β$-powers of $f^λ$, the number of sta…
We consider discrete orthogonal polynomial ensembles which are discrete analogues of the orthogonal polynomial ensembles in random matrix theory. These ensembles occur in certain problems in combinatorial probability and can be thought of as probability measures on partitions. The Meixner ensemble is related to a two-dimensional directed growth model, and the Charlier ensemble is related to the lengths of weakly increasing subsequences in random words. The Krawtchouk ensemble occurs in connection with zig-zag paths in random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, and also in a certain simplified…
Consider random Young diagrams with a fixed number n of boxes, where the probability distribution on diagrams is determined by the Plancherel measure. That is, the weight of a diagram is proportional to the squared dimension of the corresponding irreducible representation of the symmetric group S_n. As n goes to infinity, the boundary of the (suitably scaled) random diagram concentrates near a curve Omega (Logan-Shepp 1977, Vershik-Kerov 1977). In 1993, Kerov announced a central limit theorem describing Gaussian fluctuations of random diagrams around the limit shape Omega. Here we propose a re…
We initiate a Stein's method approach to the study of the Plancherel measure of the symmetric group. A new proof of Kerov's central limit theorem for character ratios of random representations of the symmetric group on transpositions is obtained; the proof gives an error term. The construction of an exchangeable pair needed for applying Stein's method arises from the theory of harmonic functions on Bratelli diagrams. We also find the spectrum of the Markov chain on partitions underlying the construction of the exchangeable pair. This yields an intriguing method for studying the asymptotic deco…
We show that the symplectic and orthogonal character analogues of Okounkov's Schur measure (on integer partitions) are determinantal, with explicit correlation kernels. We apply this to prove certain Borodin-Okounkov-Gessel-type results concerning Toeplitz+Hankel and Fredholm determinants; a Szegő-type limit theorem; an edge Baik-Deift-Johansson-type asymptotical result for certain symplectic and orthogonal analogues of the poissonized Plancherel measure; and a similar result for actual poissonized Plancherel measures supported on "almost symmetric" partitions.
In this paper we determine two asymptotic results for Jack measures on partitions, a model defined by two specializations of Jack polynomials proposed by Borodin-Olshanski in [European J. Combin. 26.6 (2005): 795-834]. Assuming these two specializations are the same, we derive limit shapes and Gaussian fluctuations for the anisotropic profiles of these random partitions in three asymptotic regimes associated to diverging, fixed, and vanishing values of the Jack parameter. To do so, we introduce a generalization of Motzkin paths we call "ribbon paths", show for general Jack measures that certai…
The shifted Schur measure introduced by Tracy and Widom is a measure on the set of all strict partitions, which is defined by Schur $Q$-functions. The main aim of this paper is to calculate the correlation function of this measure, which is given by a pfaffian. As an application, we prove that a limit distribution of $λ_j$'s with respect to a shifted version of the Plancherel measure for symmetric groups is identical with the corresponding distribution of the original Plancherel measure. Further we give expressions of the mean value and the variance of the size of a partition with respect to t…
We construct Pfaffian L-ensembles related to the z-measures on partitions and to the Plancherel measures on partitions with the Jack parameters 1/2 or 2. The results imply that these measures on partitions lead to Pfaffian point processes, and the correlation kernels of these processes can be expressed in terms of the corresponding L-matrices. We give explit formulae for these L-matrices.
Using techniques from integrable systems, we obtain a number of exact results for random partitions. In particular, we prove a simple formula for correlation functions of what we call the Schur measure on partitions (which is a far reaching generalization of the Plancherel measure, see math.CO/9905032) and also show that these correlations functions are tau-functions for the Toda lattice hierarchy. Also we give a new proof of the formula due to Bloch and the author, see alg-geom/9712009, for the so called n-point functions of the uniform measure on partitions and comment on the local structure…
We study the eigenvalues of a Laplace-Beltrami operator defined on the set of the symmetric polynomials, where the eigenvalues are expressed in terms of partitions of integers. By assigning partitions with the restricted uniform measure, the restricted Jack measure, the uniform measure or the Plancherel measure, we prove that the global distribution of the eigenvalues is asymptotically a new distribution $μ$, the Gamma distribution, the Gumbel distribution and the Tracy-Widom distribution, respectively. An explicit representation of $μ$ is obtained by a function of independent random variables…
We define the $L$-measure on the set of Dirichlet characters as an analogue of the Plancherel measure, once considered as a measure on the irreducible characters of the symmetric group. We compare the two measures and study the limit in distribution of characters evaluations when the size of the underlying group grows. These evaluations are proven to converge in law to imaginary exponentials of a Cauchy distribution in the same way as the rescaled windings of the complex Brownian motion. This contrasts with the case of the symmetric group where the renormalised characters converge in law to Ga…
For a class of random partitions of an infinite set a de Finetti-type representation is derived, and in one special case a central limit theorem for the number of blocks is shown.
We study edge asymptotics of poissonized Plancherel-type measures on skew Young diagrams (integer partitions). These measures can be seen as generalizations of those studied by Baik--Deift--Johansson and Baik--Rains in resolving Ulam's problem on longest increasing subsequences of random permutations and the last passage percolation (corner growth) discrete versions thereof. Moreover they interpolate between said measures and the uniform measure on partitions. In the new KPZ-like 1/3 exponent edge scaling limit with logarithmic corrections, we find new probability distributions generalizing th…
We prove the conjectured limiting normality for the number of crossings of a uniformly chosen set partition of [n] = {1,2,...,n}. The arguments use a novel stochastic representation and are also used to prove central limit theorems for the dimension index and the number of levels.
We use the recently developed method of weighted dependency graphs to prove central limit theorems for the number of occurrences of any fixed pattern in multiset permutations and in set partitions. This generalizes results for patterns of size 2 in both settings, obtained by Canfield, Janson and Zeilberger and Chern, Diaconis, Kane and Rhoades, respectively.
We propose discrete random-field models that are based on random partitions of $\mathbb{N}^2$. The covariance structure of each random field is determined by the underlying random partition. Functional central limit theorems are established for the proposed models, and fractional Brownian sheets, with full range of Hurst indices, arise in the limit. Our models could be viewed as discrete analogues of fractional Brownian sheets, in the same spirit that the simple random walk is the discrete analogue of the Brownian motion.
We analyze Ising/Curie-Weiss models on the Erdős-Rényi graph with $N$ vertices and edge probability $p=p(N)$ that were introduced by Bovier and Gayrard [J.\ Statist.\ Phys., 72(3-4):643--664, 1993] and investigated in two previous articles by the authors. We prove Central Limit Theorems for the partition function of the model and -- at other decay regimes of $p(N)$ -- for the logarithmic partition function. We find critical regimes for $p(N)$ at which the behavior of the fluctuations of the partition function changes.
In this article we formulate the CLT associated to Gaussian operators of type B -- see \cite{BEH15}, where important role is played by colored pair partitions. Then we present a certain family of noncommutative random matrix models for the $(α,q)$--deformed Gaussian random variables
We study large random partitions boxed into a rectangle and coming from skew Howe duality, or alternatively from dual Schur measures. As the sides of the rectangle go to infinity, we obtain: 1) limit shape results for the profiles generalizing the Vershik--Kerov--Logan--Shepp curve; and 2) universal edge asymptotic results for the first parts in the form of the Tracy--Widom distribution, as well as less-universal critical regime results introduced by Gravner, Tracy and Widom. We do this for a large class of Schur parameters going beyond the Plancherel or principal specializations previously st…
We continue with the study of the mollified stochastic heat equation in $d\geq 3$ given by $d u_{ε,t}=\frac 12Δu_{ε,t}+ βε^{(d-2)/2} \,u_{ε,t} \,d B_{ε,t}$ with spatially smoothened cylindrical Wiener process $B$, whose (renormalized) Feynman-Kac solution describes the partition function of the continuous directed polymer. In an earlier work (\cite{MSZ16}), a phase transition was obtained, depending on the value of $β>0$ in the limiting object of the smoothened solution $u_ε$ as the smoothing parameter $ε\to 0$ This partition function naturally defines a quenched polymer path measure and we pr…
We introduce a universality theorem for functionals of measures on partitions which "behave like" the Ewens measure. Various limit theorems for the Ewens measure, most notably the Poisson-Dirichlet limit for the longest parts, the functional central limit theorem for the number of parts, and the Erdos-Turan limit for the product of parts, extend to these asymptotically Ewens measures as easy corollaries. Our major contributions are: (1) extending the classes of measures for which these limit theorems hold; (2) characterising universality by a single, easily-checked criterion; and (3) greatly s…
The theorem of Shannon-McMillan-Breiman states that for every generating partition on an ergodic system, the exponential decay rate of the measure of cylinder sets equals the metric entropy almost everywhere (provided the entropy is finite). In this paper we prove that the measure of cylinder sets are lognormally distributed for strongly mixing systems and infinite partitions and show that the rate of convergence is polynomial provided the fourth moment of the information function is finite. Also, unlike previous results by Ibragimov and others which only apply to finite partitions, here we do…
A useful heuristic in the understanding of large random combinatorial structures is the Arratia-Tavare principle, which describes an approximation to the joint distribution of component-sizes using independent random variables. The principle outlines conditions under which the total variation distance between the true joint distribution and the approximation should be small, and was successfully exploited by Pittel in the cases of integer partitions and set partitions. We provide sufficient conditions for this principle to be true in a general context, valid for certain discrete probability di…
In a series of works published in the 1990-s, Kerov put forth various applications of the circle of ideas centred at the Markov moment problem to the limiting shape of random continual diagrams arising in representation theory and spectral theory. We demonstrate on several examples that his approach is also adequate to study the fluctuations about the limiting shape. In the random matrix setting, we compare two continual diagrams: one is constructed from the eigenvalues of the matrix and the critical points of its characteristic polynomial, whereas the second one is constructed from the eigenv…
We obtain some approximation results for the weights appearing in the exchangeable partition probability function identifying Gibbs partition models of parameter $α\in (0,1)$, as introduced in Gnedin and Pitman (2006). We rely on approximation results for central and non-central generalized Stirling numbers and on known results for conditional and unconditional $α$ diversity. We provide an application to an approximate Bayesian nonparametric estimation of discovery probability in species sampling problems under normalized inverse Gaussian priors.
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of random paths on a graded graph which describes the subword order for words in two letters. This graph, denoted by $\mathcal{Z}$, has been introduced by Viennot, who also discovered a remarkable bijection between paths on $\mathcal{Z}$ and sequences of permutations. Later on, Gnedin and Olshanski used this bijection to describe the set of Gibbs measures on this graph. Both authors also conjectured that the Martin boundary of $\mathcal{Z}$ should coincide with its minimal boundary. We give here a proof of this conjecture by describing the distribution of…
We classify extremal traces on the seven direct limit algebras of noncrossing partitions arising from the classification of free partition quantum groups of Banica-Speicher (arXiv:0808.2628) and Weber (arXiv:1201.4723). For the infinite-dimensional Temperley-Lieb-algebra (corresponding to the quantum group $O^+_N$) and the Motzkin algebra ($B^+_N$), the classification of extremal traces implies a classification result for well-known types of central random lattice paths. For the $2$-Fuss-Catalan algebra ($H_N^+$) we solve the classification problem by computing the \emph{minimal or exit bounda…
We use k-Schur functions to get the minimal boundary of the k-bounded partition poset. This permits to describe the central random walks on affine Grassmannian elements of type A and yields a polynomial expression for their drift. We also recover Rietsch's parametriza-tion of totally nonnegative unitriangular Toeplitz matrices without using quantum cohomology of flag varieties. All the homeomorphisms we define can moreover be made explicit by using the combinatorics of k-Schur functions and elementary computations based on Perron-Frobenius theorem.
We analyse the limiting behavior of the eigenvalue and singular value distribution for random convolution operators on large (not necessarily Abelian) groups, extending the results by M. Meckes for the Abelian case. We show that for regular sequences of groups the limiting distribution of eigenvalues (resp. singular values) is a mixture of eigenvalue (resp. singular value) distributions of Ginibre matrices with the directing measure being related to the limiting behavior of the Plancherel measure of the sequence of groups. In particular for the sequence of symmetric groups, the limiting distri…
The non-commutative Central Limit Theorem (CLT) introduced by Speicher in 1992 states that given almost any sequence of non-commutative random variables that commute or anti-commute pair-wise, the *-moments of the normalized partial sum S_N=(b_1+...+ b_N)/\sqrt{N} are given by a Wick-type formula refined to count the number of crossings in the underlying pair-partitions. When coupled with explicit matrix models, the theorem yields random matrix models for creation and annihilation operators on the q-Fock space of Bozejko and Speicher. In this paper, we derive a non-commutative CLT when the pai…
