This short survey illustrates the ideas of Teichmuller dynamics. As a model application we consider the asymptotic topology of generic geodesics on a "flat" surface and count closed geodesics and saddle connections. This survey is based on the joint papers with A.Eskin and H.Masur and with M.Kontsevich.
We investigate typical behavior of geodesics on a closed flat surface $S$ of genus $g\geq 2$. We compare the length quotient of long arcs in the same homotopy class with fixed endpoints for the flat and the hyperbolic metric in the same conformal class. This quotient is asymptotically constant $F$ a.e. We show that $F$ is bounded from below by the inverse of the volume entropy $e(S)$. Moreover, we construct a geodesic flow together with a measure on $S$ which is induced by the Hausdorff measure of the Gromov boundary of the universal cover. Denote by $e(S)$ the volume entropy of $S$ and let $c…
Let $S$ be a surface of nonpositive curvature of genus bigger than 1 (i.e. not the torus). We prove that any flat strip in the surface is in fact a flat cylinder. Moreover we prove that the number of homotopy classes of such flat cylinders is bounded.
We study homologically maximizing timelike geodesics in conformally flat tori. A causal geodesic $γ$ in such a torus is said to be homologically maximizing if one (hence every) lift of $γ$ to the universal cover is arclength maximizing. First we prove a compactness result for homologically maximizing timelike geodesics. This yields the Lipschitz continuity of the time separation of the universal cover on strict sub-cones of the cone of future pointing vectors. Then we introduce the stable time separation $\mathfrak{l}$. As an application we prove relations between the concavity properties of $…
We prove a quantitative estimate, with a power saving error term, for the number of simple closed geodesics of length at most $L$ on a compact surface equipped with a Riemannian metric of negative curvature. The proof relies on the exponential mixing rate for the Teichmüller geodesic flow.
Consider a compact surface of genus $\geq 2$ equipped with a metric that is flat everywhere except at finitely many cone points with angles greater than $2π$. Following the technique in the work of Burns, Climenhaga, Fisher, and Thompson, we prove that sufficiently regular potential functions have unique equilibrium states if the singular set does not support the full pressure. Moreover, we show that the pressure gap holds for any potential which is locally constant on a neighborhood of the singular set. Finally, we establish that the corresponding equilibrium states have the $K$-property, and…
The geodesic flow of the flat metric on a torus is minimizing the polynomial entropy among all geodesic flows on this torus. We prove here that this properties characterises the flat metric on the two torus.
Let $M$ be a smooth compact surface of nonpositive curvature, with genus $\geq 2$. We prove the ergodicity of the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of $M$ with respect to the Liouville measure under the condition that the set of points with negative curvature on $M$ has finitely many connected components. Under the same condition, we prove that a non closed "flat" geodesic doesn't exist, and moreover, there are at most finitely many flat strips, and at most finitely many isolated closed "flat" geodesics.
We calculate the asymptotic average rate at which a generic geodesic on a finite area hyperbolic 2-orbifold returns to an embedded disc on the surface, as well as the average amount of time it spends in the disc during each visit. This includes the case where the center of the disc is a cone point.
For fixed g and T we show that finiteness of the set of affine equivalence classes of flat surfaces of genus g whose Veech groups contain a cusp of hyperbolic co-area less than T. We obtain new restrictions on Veech groups: we show that any non-elementary Veech group can appear only finitely many times in a fixed stratum, that any non-elementary Veech group is of finite index in its normalizer, and that the quotient of the upper half plane by a non-lattice Veech group contains arbitrarily large embedded disks. These are proved using the finiteness of the set of affine equivalence classes of fl…
As we have proved in [L], the geodesic flows associated with the flat metrics on T^2 minimize the polynomial entropy. In this paper, we show that, among the geodesic flows that are Bott integrable and dynamically coherent, the geodesic flows associated to flat metrics are local strict minima for the polynomial entropy. To this aim, we prove a graph property for invariant Lagrangian tori in near-integrable systems.
We describe a family of arithmetic cross-sections for geodesic flow on compact surfaces of constant negative curvature based on the study of generalized Bowen-Series boundary maps associated to cocompact torsion-free Fuchsian groups and their natural extensions, introduced in Katok-Ugarcovici's 2017 paper. If the boundary map satisfies the short cycle property, i.e., the forward orbits at each discontinuity point coincide after one step, the natural extension map has a global attractor with finite rectangular structure, and the associated arithmetic cross-section is parametrized by the attract…
Any smooth surface in R^3 may be flattened along the z-axis, and the flattened surface becomes close to a billiard table in R^2 . We show that, under some hypotheses, the geodesic flow of this surface converges locally uniformly to the billiard flow. Moreover, if the billiard is dispersive and has finite horizon, then the geodesic flow of the corresponding surface is Anosov. We apply this result to the theory of mechanical linkages and their dynamics: we provide a new example of a simple linkage whose physical behavior is Anosov. For the first time, the edge lengths of the mechanism are given …
Let $X$ be a proper, geodesically complete CAT(0) space under a proper, non-elementary, isometric action by a group $Γ$ with a rank one element. We construct a generalized Bowen-Margulis measure on the space of unit-speed parametrized geodesics of $X$ modulo the $Γ$-action. Although the construction of Bowen-Margulis measures for rank one nonpositively curved manifolds and for CAT(-1) spaces is well-known, the construction for CAT(0) spaces hinges on establishing a new structural result of independent interest: Almost no geodesic, under the Bowen-Margulis measure, bounds a flat strip of any po…
The lengths of geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces satisfy intriguing equations, known as identities, relating these lengths to geometric quantities of the surface. This paper is about a large family of identities that relate lengths of closed geodesics and orthogeodesics to boundary lengths or number of cusps. These include, as particular cases, identities due to Basmajian, to McShane and to Mirzakhani and Tan-Wong-Zhang. In stark contrast to previous identities, the identities presented here include the lengths taken among all closed geodesics.
We consider a billiard in the sphere S^2 with circular obstacles, and give a sufficient condition for its flow to be uniformly hyperbolic. We show that the billiard flow in this case is approximated by an Anosov geodesic flow on a surface in the ambiant space S^3. As an application, we show that every orientable surface of genus at least 11 admits an isometric embedding into S^3 (equipped with the standard metric) such that its geodesic flow is Anosov. Finally, we explain why this construction cannot provide examples of isometric embeddings of surfaces in the Euclidean R^3 with Anosov geodesic…
We establish the background for the study of geodesics on noncompact polygonal surfaces. For illustration, we study the recurrence of geodesics on $Z$-periodic polygonal surfaces. We prove, in particular, that almost all geodesics on a topologically typical $Z$-periodic surface with boundary are recurrent.
We consider the geodesic flow of a compact connected rank 1 surface. We prove a formula for the topological pressure as the exponential growth rate of rank 1 periodic geodesics generalizing a previous result of K. Gelfert and B. Schapira [12].
We study the symmetries and geodesics of an infinite translation surface which arises as a limit of translation surfaces built from regular polygons, studied by Veech. We find the affine symmetry group of this infinite translation surface, and we show that this surface admits a deformation into other surfaces with topologically equivalent affine symmetries. The geodesics on these new surfaces are combinatorially the same as the geodesics on the original.
We prove that for the geodesic flow of a rank 1 Riemannian surface which is expansive but not Anosov the Hausdorff dimension of the set of vectors with only zero Lyapunov exponents is large.
As shown by Masur in 80s, for any translation surface there exists a periodic geodesic of bounded length, the directions of periodic geodesics are dense in the unit circle, and the number of cylinders of periodic geodesics of length at most T admits upper and lower quadratic estimates. The main goal of this paper is to generalize the above results, with special interest in obtaining effective estimates. In addition, we apply results of Eskin and Masur to establish some properties of periodic geodesics on generic translation surfaces.
We show that given any Liouville direction and flat Finsler torus, one can make a $C^{\infty}$-small perturbation on an arbitrarily small disc to get a nondense geodesic in the given direction.
We prove the existence of Alexandrov embedded closed magnetic geodesics on closed hyperbolic surfaces. Closed magnetic geodesics correspond to closed curves with prescribed geodesic curvature.
We study the non-persistence of horizontal invariant circles for geodesically convex perturbations of the geodesic circular billiard on surfaces of constant curvature and show that the result obtained by Ramírez-Ros for the planar case, remains true for billiards on surfaces with constant curvature.
We give a new proof of the existence of compact surfaces embedded in $R^3$ with Anosov geodesic flows. This proof starts with a non-compact model surface whose geodesic flow is shown to be Anosov using a uniformly strictly invariant cone condition. Using a sequence of explicit maps based on the standard torus embedding, we produce compact embedded surfaces that can be seen as small perturbations of the Anosov model system and hence are themselves Anosov.
We study multifractal spectra of the geodesic flows on rank 1 surfaces without focal points. We compute the entropy of the level sets for the Lyapunov exponents and estimate its Hausdorff dimension from below. In doing so, we employ and generalize results of Burns and Gelfert.

We define a norm on homology of punctured tori equipped with a complete hyperbolic metric of finite volume and use it to find asymptotics on the growth of the number of simple geodesics of bounded length.
We prove that the geodesic flow on closed surfaces displays a hyperbolic set if the shadowing property holds C2-robustly on the metric. Similar results are obtained when considering even feeble properties like the weak shadowing and the specification properties. Despite the Hamiltonian nature of the geodesic flow, the arguments in the present paper differ completely from those used in [5] for Hamiltonian systems.
In this note we present new asymptotic estimates comparing the word length and geodesic length of closed geodesics on surfaces with (variable) negative sectional curvatures. In particular, we provide an averaged comparison of these two important quantities and obtain precise statistical results, including a central limit theorem and a local limit theorem. Further, as a corollary we also improve an asymptotic formula of R. Sharp and the second author. Finally, we relate our results to recent work of Gekhtman, Taylor and Tiozzo.
We show that every closed Lorentzian surface contains at least two closed geodesics. Explicit examples show the optimality of this claim. Refining this result we relate the least number of closed geodesics to the causal structure of the surface and the homotopy type of the Lorentzian metric.
We relate a number of results in the theory of flat surfaces to BPS spectra of a class of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric quantum field theories arising from M5 branes wrapped on Riemann surfaces -- $A_1$ class S theories. In particular, we apply classic results of Eskin and Masur, which determine the asymptotic growth of geodesic counts at large length on flat surfaces, as well as more recent progress in the mathematics literature, to determine the large mass asymptotics of the BPS spectra of a wide class of such theories at generic points in the Coulomb branch.
We obtain Margulis-type asymptotic estimates for the number of free homotopy classes of closed geodesics on certain manifolds without conjugate points. Our results cover all compact surfaces of genus at least 2 without conjugate points.
We calculate the asymptotic average rate at which a generic geodesic on a finite area hyperbolic 2-orbifold returns to a subsurface with geodesic boundary. As a consequence we get the average time a generic geodesic spends in such a subsurface. Related results are obtained for excursions into a collar neighborhood of a simple closed geodesic and the associated distribution of excursion depths.
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold of hyperbolic type, i.e M is a manifold admitting another metric of strictly negative curvature. In this paper we study the geodesic flow restricted to the set of geodesics which are minimal on the universal covering. In particular for surfaces we show that the topological entropy of the minimal geodesics coincides with the volume entropy of (M, g) generalizing work of Freire and Mane.
The behavior of geodesic curves on even seemingly simple surfaces can be surprisingly complex. In this paper we use the Hamiltonian formulation of the geodesic equations to analyze their integrability properties. In particular, we examine the behavior of geodesics on surfaces defined by the spherical harmonics. Using the Morales-Ramis theorem and Kovacic algorithm we are able to prove that the geodesic equations on all surfaces defined by the sectoral harmonics are not integrable, and we use Poincaré sections to demonstrate the breakdown of regular motion.
We propose a new condition $\aleph$ which enables to get new results on integrable geodesic flows on closed surfaces. This paper has two parts. In the first, we strengthen Kozlov's theorem on non-integrability on surfaces of higher genus. In the second, we study integrable geodesic flows on 2-torus. Our main result for 2-torus describes the phase portraits of integrable flows. We prove that they are essentially standard outside, what we call, separatrix chains. The complement to the union of the separatrix chains is $C^0$-foliated by invariant sections of the bundle.
This paper is an exposition of the major results of P. Eberlein's paper, "When is a geodesic flow of Anosov type? I," in the special case when the manifold $M$ is a surface. We follow Eberlein's coverage closely, adding details when helpful, and taking advantage of simplifications given by the dimension two case. The objective is to give readers a more tractable introduction to the important topic of Anosov geodesic flows, which highlights key concepts and arguments without worrying about generalizations to arbitrary dimension.
In this article, we study the ergodicity of the geodesic flows on surfaces with no focal points. Let $M$ be a smooth connected and closed surface equipped with a $C^\infty$ Riemannian metric $g$, whose genus $\mathfrak{g} \geq 2$. Suppose that $(M,g)$ has no focal points. We prove that the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of $M$ is ergodic with respect to the Liouville measure, under the assumption that the set of points on $M$ with negative curvature has at most finitely many connected components.
We determine the variance for the fluctuations of the arithmetic measures obtained by collecting all closed geodesics on the modular surface with the same discriminant and ordering them by the latter. This arithmetic variance differs by subtle factors from the variance that one gets when considering individual closed geodesics when ordered by their length. The arithmetic variance is the same one that appears in the fluctuations of measures associated with quantum states on the modular surface.
This paper addresses an open problem recently posed by V. Kozlov: a rigorous proof of the non-integrability of the geodesic flow on the cubic surface $x y z=1$. We prove this is the case using the Morales-Ramis theorem and Kovacic algorithm. We also consider some consequences and extensions of this result.
