The possible omega limit sets of simple geodesics for meromorphic connections on compact Riemann surfaces have been studied by Abate, Tovena and Bianchi. In this paper, we study the same problem for infinite self-intersecting geodesics. In the first part of the paper we study relation among meromorphic $k$-differentials, singular flat metrics and meromorphic connections. Moreover, we prove a Poincaré-Bendixson theorem for infinite self-intersecting geodesics of meromorphic connections with monodromy in $G$, where $\arg G^k=\{0\}$ for some $k\in\mathbb{N}$.
We prove a Poincaré-Bendixson theorem describing the asymptotic behavior of geodesics for a meromorphic connection on a compact Riemann surface. We shall also briefly discuss the case of non-compact Riemann surfaces, and study in detail the geodesics for a holomorphic connection on a complex torus.
We prove a new bound on the number of shared values of distinct meromorphic functions on a compact Riemann surface, explain a mistake in a previous paper on this topic, and give a survey of related questions.
We present some results on two meromorphic functions from S to the Riemann sphere sharing a number of values where S is a Riemann surface of one of the following types: compact, compact minus finitely many points, the unit disk, a torus, the complex plane.
It is a consequence of the Jacobi Inversion Theorem that a line bundle over a Riemann surface M of genus g has a meromorphic section having at most g poles, or equivalently, the divisor class of a divisor D over M contains a divisor having at most g poles (counting multiplicities). We explore various analogues of these ideas for vector bundles and associated matrix divisors over M. The most explicit results are for the genus 1 case. We also review and improve earlier results concerning the construction of automorphic or relatively automorphic meromorphic matrix functions having a prescribed nu…
This note is to concern a generalization to the case of twisted coefficients of the classical theory of Abelian differentials on a compact Riemann surface. We apply the Dirichlet's principle to a modified energy functional to show the existence of differentials with twisted coefficients of the second and third kinds under a suitable assumption on residues.
We describe the space of measured foliations induced on a compact Riemann surface by meromorphic quadratic differentials. We prove that any such foliation is realized by a unique such differential $q$ if we prescribe, in addition, the principal parts of $\sqrt q$ at the poles. This generalizes a theorem of Hubbard and Masur for holomorphic quadratic differentials. The proof analyzes infinite-energy harmonic maps from the Riemann surface to $\mathbb{R}$-trees of infinite co-diameter, with prescribed behavior at the poles.
We prove the algebraic version of a conjecture of C. Sabbah on the existence of the good formal structure for meromorphic flat connections on surfaces after some blow up.
For a Riemann surface of genus $g\ge 2$ there exists a unique Green's function $G_{N}(x,y)$ which transforms as a weight $N\ge 2$ form in $x$ and a weight $1-N$ form in $y$ and is meromorphic in $x$, with a unique simple pole at $x=y$, but is not meromorphic in $y$. For a Schottky uniformized Riemann surface we consider meromorphic extensions of $G_{N}(x,y)$ called Green's Functions with Extended Meromorphicity or GEM forms. GEM forms are meromorphic in both $x$ and $y$ with a unique simple pole at $x=y$, transform as weight $N\ge 2$ forms in $x$ but as weight $1-N$ quasiperiodic forms in $y$.…
We investigate the existence of non-trivial holomorphic and meromorphic solutions of Fermat functional equations over an open Riemann surface $S$. When $S$ is hyperbolic, we prove that any $k$-term Fermat functional equation always exists non-trivial holomorphic and meromorphic solution. When $S$ is a general open Riemann surface, we prove that every non-trivial holomorphic or meromorphic solution satisfies a growth condition, provided that the power exponents of the equations are bigger than some certain positive integers.
These notes form an extended version of a minicourse delivered in Universite de Montreal (June 2002) within the framework of a NATO workshop ``Normal Forms, Bifurcations and Finiteness Problems in Differential Equations''. The focus is on Poincare--Dulac theory of ``Fuchsian'' (logarithmic) singularities of integrable systems, with applications to problems on zeros of Abelian integrals in view.
This is a survey of results on the following problem. Consider a simply connected Riemann surface spread over the Riemann sphere. How are the properties of the uniformizing function of this surface related to the geometric properties of the surface? Based on the lecture in U. Michigan in May 2006.
For an arbitrary tuple of $m+1$ germs of analytic functions at a fixed point, we introduce the so-called polynomial Hermite-Padé $m$-system (of order $n$, $n\in\mathbb N$), which consists of $m$ tuples of polynomials; these tuples, which are indexed by a natural number $k\in[1,\dots,m]$, are called the $k$th polynomials of the Hermite-Padé $m$-system. We study the weak asymptotics of the polynomials of the Hermite-Padé $m$-system constructed at the point $\infty$ from the tuple of germs $[1, f_{1,\infty},\dotsc$, $f_{m,\infty}]$ of the functions $1, f_1,\dots,f_m$ that are meromorphic on some …
We prove that zeros and critical points of a random polynomial $p_N$ of degree $N$ in one complex variable appear in pairs. More precisely, if $p_N$ is conditioned to have $p_N(ξ)=0$ for a fixed $ξ\in \C\backslash\set{0},$ we prove that there is a unique critical point z in the annulus $N^{-1-\ep}<\abs{z-ξ}< N^{-1+\ep}}$ and no critical points closer to $ξ$ with probability at least $1-O(N^{-3/2+3\ep}).$ We also prove an analogous statement in the more general setting of random meromorphic functions on a closed Riemann surface.
We introduce a notion of resultant of two meromorphic functions on a compact Riemann surface and demonstrate its usefulness in several respects. For example, we exhibit several integral formulas for the resultant, relate it to potential theory and give explicit formulas for the algebraic dependence between two meromorphic functions on a compact Riemann surface. As a particular application, the exponential transform of a quadrature domain in the complex plane is expressed in terms of the resultant of two meromorphic functions on the Schottky double of the domain.
In this paper we investigate possible extensions of the idea of geodesic completeness in complex manifolds, following two directions: metrics are somewhere allowed not to be of maximum rank, or to have 'poles' somewhere else. Geodesics are eventually defined on Riemann surfaces over regions in the Riemann sphere. Completeness theorems are given in the framework of warped products of Riemann surfaces.
In this article, we consider metrically thin singularities E of the solutions of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operators on a C^{2,a}-smooth embedded Cauchy-Riemann generic manifold M (CR functions on M - E) and more generally, we consider holomorphic functions defined in wedgelike domains attached to M - E. Our main result establishes the wedge- and the L^1-removability of E under the hypothesis that the (\dim M-2)-dimensional Hausdorff volume of E is zero and that M and M\backslash E are globally minimal. As an application, we deduce that there exists a wedgelike domain attached to an everyw…
Given a flat meromorphic connection on an excellent scheme over a field of characteristic zero, we prove existence of good formal structures after blowing up; this extends a theorem of Mochizuki for algebraic varieties. The argument combines a numerical criterion for good formal structures from a previous paper, with an analysis based on the geometry of an associated valuation space (Riemann-Zariski space). We obtain a similar result over the formal completion of an excellent scheme along a closed subscheme. If we replace the excellent scheme by a complex analytic variety, we obtain a similar …
We give a criterion under which one can obtain a good decomposition (in the sense of Malgrange) of a formal flat connection on a complex analytic or algebraic variety of arbitrary dimension. The criterion is stated in terms of the spectral behavior of differential operators, and generalizes Robba's construction of the Hukuhara-Levelt-Turrittin decomposition in the one-dimensional case. As an application, we prove the existence of good formal structures for flat meromorphic connections on surfaces after suitable blowing up; this verifies a conjecture of Sabbah, and extends a result of Mochizuki…
Theta functions play a major role in many current researches and are powerful tools for studying integrable systems. The purpose of this paper is to provide a short and quick exposition of some aspects of meromorphic theta functions for compact Riemann surfaces. The study of theta functions will be done via an analytical approach using meromorphic functions in the framework of Mumford. Some interesting examples will be given : the classical Kirchhoff equations in the cases of Clebsch and Lyapunov-Steklov, the Landau-Lifshitz equation and the sine-Gordon equation.
We first study the dynamics of the geodesic flow of a meromorphic connection on a Riemann surface, and prove a Poincaré-Bendixson theorem describing recurrence properties and $ω$-limit sets of geodesics for a meromorphic connection on $¶^1(\C)$. We then show how to associate to a homogeneous vector field $Q$ in ${\Bbb C}^n$ a rank 1 singular holomorphic foliation $\cal F$ of $¶^{n-1}(\C)$ and a (partial) meromorphic connection $\nabla^o$ along $\ca F$ so that integral curves of $Q$ are described by the geodesic flow of $\nabla^o$ along the leaves of $\ca F$, which are Riemann surfaces. The com…
We prove the existence of "half-plane differentials" with prescribed local data on any Riemann surface. These are meromorphic quadratic differentials with higher-order poles which have an associated singular flat metric isometric to a collection of euclidean half-planes glued by an interval-exchange map on their boundaries. The local data is associated with the poles and consists of the integer order, a non-negative real residue, and a positive real leading order term. This generalizes a result of Strebel for differentials with double-order poles, and associates metric spines with the Riemann …
In this short note we would like to show how it is possible to use techniques introduced in the theory of local dynamics of holomorphic germs tangent to the identity to study global meromorphic self-maps of the complex projective space. In particular we shall show how a meromorphic self-map of a complex projective space induces a holomorphic foliation of the projective space in Riemann surfaces, whose singular points are exactly the fixed points and the indeterminacy points of the map; and we shall prove three index theorems, relating suitably defined local residues at the fixed and indetermin…
We consider a log-Riemann surface $\mathcal{S}$ with a finite number of ramification points and finitely generated fundamental group. The log-Riemann surface is equipped with a local holomorphic difffeomorphism $π: \mathcal{S} \to \C$. We prove that $\mathcal{S}$ is biholomorphic to a compact Riemann surface with finitely many punctures $S$, and the pull-back of the 1-form $dπ$ under the biholomorphic map $ϕ: S \to \mathcal{S}$ is a 1-form $ω= ϕ^* dπ$ with isolated singularities at the punctures of exponential type, i.e. near each puncture $p$, $ω= e^h \cdot ω_0$ where $h$ is a function meromo…
Given a formal flat meromorphic connection over an excellent scheme over a field of characteristic zero, in a previous paper we established existence of good formal structures and a good Deligne-Malgrange lattice after suitably blowing up. In this paper, we reinterpret and refine these results by introducing some related structures. We consider the turning locus, which is the set of points at which one cannot achieve a good formal structure without blowing up. We show that when the polar divisor has normal crossings, the turning locus is of pure codimension 1 within the polar divisor, and henc…
A meromorphic quadratic differential with poles of order two, on a compact Riemann surface, induces a measured foliation on the surface, with a spiralling structure at any pole that is determined by the complex residue of the differential at the pole. We introduce the space of such measured foliations, and prove that for a fixed Riemann surface, any such foliation is realized by a quadratic differential with second order poles at marked points. Furthermore, such a differential is uniquely determined if one prescribes complex residues at the poles that are compatible with the transverse measure…
This thesis is concerned with extending the idea of geodesic completeness from pseudo-Riemannian to complex geometry: we take, however a completely holomorphicpoint of view; that is to say, a 'metric' will be a (meromorphic) symmetric section of the twice covariant holomorphic tensor bundle. We shall hint at the need of reformulating some aspects of the theory of differential equations in the complex domain, originating in the interpenetration betwixt differential and algebraic aspects when analytical continuation is pursued. The notion itself of path should be reformulated: we remark that geo…
We prove an analogue of E. Levi's Continuity Principle for meromorphic mappings with values in arbitrary compact complex manifolds in place of the Riemann sphere $\cc\pp^1$. The result is achieved by introducing a new extension method for meromorphic mappings. One of the corollaries reads as follows: If a compact complex surface $X$ is not "among the known ones" then for every domain $Ω$ in a Stein surface every meromorphic mapping $f:Ω\to X$ is in fact holomorphic and extends as a holomorphic mapping $\hat f:\hat D\to X$ of the envelope of holomorphy $\hat D$ of $D$ into $X$. In this last ver…
We show that it is possible to approximate the zeta-function of a curve over a finite field by meromorphic functions which satisfy the same functional equation and moreover satisfy (respectively do not satisfy) the analogue of the Riemann hypothesis. In the other direction, it is possible to approximate holomorphic functions by simple manipulations of such a zeta-function. We also consider the value distribution of zeta-functions of function fields over finite fields from the viewpoint of Nevanlinna theory.
In this paper we treat the classical Riemann zeta function as a function of three variables: one is the usual complex $\adyn$-dimensional, customly denoted as $s$, another two are complex infinite dimensional, we denote it as $\b = \{b_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ and $\z =\{z_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$. When $\b = \{1\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ and $\z = \{\frac{1}{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ one gets the usual Riemann zeta function. Our goal in this paper is to study the meromorphic continuation of $ζ(\b , \z ,s)$ as a function of the triple $(\a , \z , s)$. Minor corrections, to appear in the Journal of Mathematical Analy…
We study the behavior of real-normalized (RN) meromorphic differentials on Riemann surfaces under degeneration. We determine all possible limits of RN differentials in degenerating sequences of smooth curves, and describe the limit in terms of solutions of the corresponding Kirchhoff problem. We further show that the limit of zeroes of RN differentials is the set of zeroes of a twisted meromorphic RN differential, which we explicitly construct. Our main new tool is an explicit solution of the jump problem on Riemann surfaces in plumbing coordinates, by using the Cauchy kernel on the normalizat…
For a generic class of rational functions, we give an explicit description of the flat structure on the Riemann sphere induced by a meromorphic 1-form R(z)dz, where R is a rational function. The rational functions in the generic class we consider have only simple poles. We show that the flat structure may be obtained by pasting isometrically flat half-cylinders to a 'log-polygon', which is a domain bounded by straight line segments in a simply connected finite sheeted branched cover of C.
Let $M$ be an open Riemann surface. We prove that every meromorphic function on $M$ is the complex Gauss map of a conformal minimal immersion $M\to\mathbb{R}^3$ which may furthermore be chosen as the real part of a holomorphic null curve $M\to\mathbb{C}^3$. Analogous results are proved for conformal minimal immersions $M\to\mathbb{R}^n$ for any $n>3$. We also show that every conformal minimal immersion $M\to\mathbb{R}^n$ is isotopic through conformal minimal immersions $M\to\mathbb{R}^n$ to a flat one, and we identify the path connected components of the space of all conformal minimal immersio…
Critical measures in the complex plane are saddle points for the logarithmic energy with external field. Their local and global structure was described by Martinez-Finkelshtein and Rakhmanov. In this paper we start the development of a theory of critical measures on higher genus Riemann surfaces, where the logarithmic energy is replaced by the energy with respect to a bipolar Green's kernel. We study a max-min problem for the bipolar Green's energy with external fields Re V where dV is a meromorphic differential. Under reasonable assumptions the max-min problem has a solution and we show that …
Given any compact Riemann surface $C$, there is a canonical meromorphic 2--form $\widehatη$ on $C\times C$, with pole of order two on the diagonal $Δ\, \subset\, C\times C$, constructed in \cite{cfg}. This meromorphic 2--form $\widehatη$ produces a canonical projective structure on $C$. On the other hand the uniformization theorem provides another canonical projective structure on any compact Riemann surface $C$. We prove that these two projective structures differ in general. This is done by comparing the $(0,1)$--component of the differential of the corresponding sections of the moduli space…
Non-existence theorems for Levi flat hypersurfaces have found great interest in the literature. The question next to this that has to be asked is, when existing Levi flat hypersurfaces are at least rigid under deformations. Here, the case of boundaries of disc bundles over certain compact Riemann surfaces is considered.
Our aim in this paper is to provide a theory of discrete Riemann surfaces based on quadrilateral cellular decompositions of Riemann surfaces together with their complex structure encoded by complex weights. Previous work, in particular of Mercat, mainly focused on real weights corresponding to quadrilateral cells having orthogonal diagonals. We discuss discrete coverings, discrete exterior calculus, and discrete Abelian integrals. Our presentation includes several new notions and results such as branched coverings of discrete Riemann surfaces, the discrete Riemann-Hurwitz Formula, double poles…
