We prove that the geodesic flow on closed surfaces displays a hyperbolic set if the shadowing property holds C2-robustly on the metric. Similar results are obtained when considering even feeble properties like the weak shadowing and the specification properties. Despite the Hamiltonian nature of the geodesic flow, the arguments in the present paper differ completely from those used in [5] for Hamiltonian systems.
It is rather well-known that hyperbolic operators have the shadowing property. In the setting of finite dimensional Banach spaces, having the shadowing property is equivalent to being hyperbolic. In 2018, Bernardes et al. constructed an operator with the shadowing property which is not hyperbolic, settling an open question. In the process, they introduced a class of operators which has come to be known as generalized hyperbolic operators. This class of operators seems to be an important bridge between hyperbolicity and the shadowing property. In this article, we show that for a large natural c…
We study various types of shadowing properties and their implication for C1 generic vector fields. We show that, generically, any of the following three hypotheses implies that an isolated set is topologically transitive and hyperbolic: (i) the set is chain transitive and satisfies the (classical) shadowing property, (ii) the set satisfies the limit shadowing property, or (iii) the set satisfies the (asymptotic) shadowing property with the additional hypothesis that stable and unstable manifolds of any pair of critical orbits intersect each other. In our proof we essentially rely on the proper…

Uniform hyperbolicity is a strong chaotic property which holds, in particular, for Sinai billiards. In this paper, we consider the case of a nonflat billiard, that is, a Riemannian manifold with boundary. Each trajectory follows the geodesic flow in the interior of the billiard, and bounces when it meets the boundary. We give a sufficient condition for a nonflat billiard to be uniformly hyperbolic. As a particular case, we obtain a new criterion to show that a closed surface has an Anosov geodesic flow.
In this paper we describe the topological behavior of the geodesic flow for a class of closed 3-manifolds realized as quotients of nonstrictly convex Hilbert geometries, constructed and described explicitly by Benoist. These manifolds are Finsler geometries which have isometrically embedded flats, but also some hyperbolicity and an explicit geometric structure. We prove the geodesic flow of the quotient is topologically mixing and satisfies a nonuniform Anosov closing lemma, with applications to entropy and orbit counting. We also prove entropy-expansiveness for the geodesic flow of any compac…

We consider the semi-classical (or Gutzwiller-Voros) zeta function for $C^\infty$ contact Anosov flows. Analyzing the spectrum of transfer operators associated to the flow, we prove, for any $τ>0$, that its zeros are contained in the union of the $τ$-neighborhood of the imaginary axis, $|\Re(s)|<τ$, and the region $\Re(s)<-χ_0+τ$, up to finitely many exceptions, where $χ_0>0$ is the hyperbolicity exponent of the flow. Further we show that the zeros in the neighborhood of the imaginary axis satisfy an analogue of the Weyl law.
We study the geodesic flow of a class of 3-manifolds introduced by Benoist which have some hyperbolicity but are non-Riemannian, not CAT(0), and with non-C^1 geodesic flow. The geometries are nonstrictly convex Hilbert geometries in dimension three which admit compact quotient manifolds by discrete groups of projective transformations. We prove the Patterson-Sullivan density is canonical, with applications to counting, and construct explicitly the Bowen-Margulis measure of maximal entropy. The main result of this work is ergodicity of the Bowen-Margulis measure.
Let $M$ be a closed 3-manifold which admits an Anosov flow. In this paper we develop a technique for constructing partially hyperbolic representatives in many mapping classes of $M$. We apply this technique both in the setting of geodesic flows on closed hyperbolic surfaces and for Anosov flows which admit transverse tori. We emphasize the similarity of both constructions through the concept of $h$-transversality, a tool which allows us to compose different mapping classes while retaining partial hyperbolicity. In the case of the geodesic flow of a closed hyperbolic surface $S$ we build stably…
We prove a quantitative version of the non-uniform hyperbolicity of the Teichmüller geodesic flow. Namely, at each point of any Teichmüller flow line, we bound the infinitesimal spectral gap for variations of the Hodge norm along the flow line in terms of an easily estimated geometric quantity on the flat surface, which is greater than or equal to the flat systole. As applications, we strengthen results of Treviño and Smith regarding unique ergodicity of measured foliations, and give an estimate for the spectral gaps of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms based on the location of their axes in the mo…
In 1956, Bott in his celebrated paper on closed geodesics and Sturm intersection theory, proved an Index Iteration Formula for closed geodesics on Riemannian manifolds. Some years later, Ekeland improved this formula in the case of convex Hamiltonians and, in 1999, Long generalized the Bott iteration formula by putting in its natural symplectic context and constructing a very effective Index Theory. The literature about this formula is quite broad and the dynamical implications in the Hamiltonian world (e.g. existence, multiplicity, linear stability etc.) are enormous. Motivated by the recent …
