We study when a smooth variety $X$, embedded diagonally in its Cartesian square, is the zero scheme of a section of a vector bundle of rank $\dim(X)$ on $X\times X$. We call this the diagonal property (D). It was known that it holds for all flag manifolds ${\rm SL}_n/P$.
We consider mainly the cases of proper smooth varieties, and the analogous problems for smooth manifolds (the topological case).
Our main new observation in the case of proper varieties is a relation between (D) and cohomologically trivial line bundles on $X$, obtained by a variation of Serre's classic argument relating rank 2 vector bundles and codimension 2 subschemes, combined with Serre duality. Based on this, we have several detailed results on surfaces, and some results in higher dimensions.
For smooth affine varieties, we observe that for an affine algebraic group over an algebraically closed field, the diagonal is in fact a complete intersection; thus (D) holds, using the trivial bundle. We conjecture the existence of smooth affine complex varieties for which (D) fails; this leads to an interesting question on projective modules.
The arguments in the topological case have a different flavour, with arguments from homotopy theory, topological K-theory, index theory etc. There are 3 variants of the diagonal problem, depending on the type of vector bundle we want (arbitrary, oriented or complex). We obtain a homotopy theoretic reformulation of the diagonal property as an extension problem for a certain homotopy class of maps. We also have detailed results in several cases: spheres, odd dimensional complex projective quadric hypersurfaces, and manifolds of even dimension $\leq 6$ with an almost complex structure.
Tangent Spaces of V^r_d(L), Specific subschemes of C_d arising from various line bundles on C, are described. Then we proceed to prove Martense Theorem for these schemes, by which we determine curves C, which for some very ample line bundle L on C and some integers r and d with d\leq h^{0}(L)-2, the subscheme V^r_d(L) might attain its maximum dimension.
Using the method of Coandă and Trautmann (2006), we give a simple proof of the following theorem due to Tyurin (1976) in the smooth case: if a vector bundle $E$ on a $c$-codimensional locally Cohen-Macaulay closed subscheme $X$ of the projective space $P^n$ extends to a vector bundle $F$ on a similar closed subscheme $Y$ of $P^N$, for every $N > n$, then $E$ is the restriction to $X$ of a direct sum of line bundles on $P^n$. Using the same method, we also provide a proof of the Babylonian tower theorem for locally complete intersection subschemes of projective spaces.
Let $S$ be an irreducible smooth projective surface defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. For a positive integer $d$, let ${\rm Hilb}^d(S)$ be the Hilbert scheme parametrizing the zero-dimensional subschemes of $S$ of length $d$. For a vector bundle $E$ on $S$, let ${\mathcal H}(E)\, \longrightarrow\, {\rm Hilb}^d(S)$ be its Fourier--Mukai transform constructed using the structure sheaf of the universal subscheme of $S\times {\rm Hilb}^d(S)$ as the kernel. We prove that two vector bundles $E$ and $F$ on $S$ are isomorphic if the vector bundles ${\mathcal H}(E)$ and ${\mathcal H}(F)$ …
We give examples of subcanonical subvarieties of codimension 3 in projective n-space which are not Pfaffian, i.e. defined by the ideal sheaf of submaximal Pfaffians of an alternating map of vector bundles. This gives a negative answer to a question asked by Okonek. Walter had previously shown that a very large majority of subcanonical subschemes of codimension 3 in P^n are Pfaffian, but he left open the question whether the exceptional non-Pfaffian cases actually occur. We give non-Pfaffian examples of the principal types allowed by his theorem, including (Enriques) surfaces in P^5 in characte…
We provide an elementary proof of the Hartshorne-Serre correspondence for constructing vector bundles from local complete intersection subschemes of codimension two. This will be done, as in the correspondence of hypersurfaces and line bundles, by patching together local determinantal equations in order to produce sections of a vector bundle.
We consider the locus of sections of a vector bundle on a projective scheme that vanish in higher dimension than expected. We show that after applying a high enough twist, any maximal component of this locus consists entirely of sections vanishing along a subscheme of minimal degree. In fact, we will give a more refined description of this locus, which will allow us to deduce its limit in the Grothendieck ring of varieties.
The construction for nonreduced projective moduli scheme of semistable admissible pairs is performed. We establish the relation of this moduli scheme with reduced moduli scheme built up in the previous article and prove that nonreduced moduli scheme contains an open subscheme which is isomorphic to moduli scheme of semistable vector bundles.
We express the diagonals of projective, Grassmann and, more generally, flag bundles of type (A) using the zero schemes of some vector bundle sections, and do the same for their single point subschemes. We discuss diagonal and point properties of these flag bundles. We study when the complex manifolds G/B for other groups have the point and diagonal properties. We discuss explicit formulas for the classes of diagonals of the varieties G/B.
We study correspondences of zero-dimensional subschemes of a smooth variety X "aligned" in the same way in inside the appropriate product of Hilbert schemes. We show that such correspondences have etale covering by other such correspondences that are affine bundles over flag bundles on the tangent bundle of X. Moreover, we show that for many such coverings, the closures of the correspondences having these coverings vary so much that there is no compactification of the covering dominating all of these closures.
Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus g>1 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. Pull-back by the (absolute) Frobenius on X only defines a rational morphism on the moduli scheme of rank-2 vector bundles on X, because the Frobenius pull-back may destory stability of a vector bundle. This paper introduces and studies a Harder-Narasimhan type stratification on the moduli scheme and proves that the family of semi-stable rank-2 vector bundles (with a fixed degree) whose Frobenius pull-back are not semi-stable is parameterized by an irreducible subscheme of dimension 3g-4.
We give a presentation of the moduli stack of toric vector bundles with fixed equivariant total Chern class as a quotient of a fine moduli scheme of framed bundles by a linear group action. This fine moduli scheme is described explicitly as a locally closed subscheme of a product of partial flag varieties cut out by combinatorially specified rank conditions. We use this description to show that the moduli of rank three toric vector bundles satisfy Murphy's Law, in the sense of Vakil. The preliminary sections of the paper give a self-contained introduction to Klyachko's classification of toric …
We show that the residual categories of quadric surface bundles are equivalent to the (twisted) derived categories of some scheme under the following hypotheses. Case 1: The quadric surface bundle has a smooth section. Case 2: The total space of the quadric surface bundle is smooth and the base is a smooth surface. We provide two proofs in Case 1 describing the scheme as the hyperbolic reduction and as a subscheme of the relative Hilbert scheme of lines, respectively. In Case 2, the twisted scheme is obtained by performing birational transformations to the relative Hilbert scheme of lines. Fin…
For a regular scheme and a prime number $p$, we define the FW-cotangent bundle as a vector bundle on the closed subscheme defined by $p=0$, under a certain finiteness condition. For a constructible complex on the etale site of the scheme, we introduce the condition to be micro-supported on a closed conical subset in the FW-cotangent bundle. At the end of the article, we compute the singular supports in some cases.
Let $Y_{1},\dots,Y_{l}$ be smooth irreducible projective curves and let $Y$ be its disjoint union. Given a semisimple reductive algebraic group $G$ and a faithful representation $ρ:G\hookrightarrow \textrm{SL}(V)$ we construct a projective moduli space of $(\underlineκ,δ)$-(semi)stable singular principal $G$-bundles with generalized parabolic structure of type $\underline{e}$. In case $Y$ is the normalization of a connected and reducible projective nodal curve $X$, there is a closed subscheme coarsely representing the subfunctor corresponding to descending bundles. We prove that the descent op…
The Hilbert scheme of n points in the projective plane parameterizes degree n zero-dimensional subschemes of the projective plane. We examine the dual cones of effective divisors and moving curves on the Hilbert scheme. By studying interpolation, restriction, and stability properties of certain vector bundles on the plane we fully determine these cones for just over three fourths of all values of n. A general Steiner bundle on P^N is a vector bundle admitting a linear resolution of a particular form. We complete the classification of slopes of semistable Steiner bundles on P^N by showing every…
The purpose of this paper is to explore the geometry and establish the slope stability of tautological vector bundles on Hilbert schemes of points on smooth surfaces. By establishing stability in general we complete a series of results of Schlickewei and Wandel who proved the slope stability of these vector bundles for Hilbert schemes of 2 points or 3 points on K3 or abelian surfaces with Picard group restrictions. In exploring the geometry we show that every sufficiently positive semistable vector bundle on a smooth curve arises as the restriction of a tautological vector bundle on the Hilber…
For a reduced curve $C:f=0$ in the complex projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$, we study the set of jumping lines for the rank two vector bundle $T\langle C \rangle $ on $\mathbb{P}^2$, whose sections are the logarithmic vector fields along $C$. We point out the relations of these jumping lines with the Lefschetz type properties of the Jacobian module of $f$ and with the Bourbaki ideal of the module of Jacobian syzygies of $f$. In particular, when the vector bundle $T\langle C \rangle $ is unstable, a line is a jumping line if and only if it meets the 0-dimensional subscheme defined by this Bourba…
A Brill-Noether locus is a subscheme of the moduli of bundles E over a curve C defined by requiring E to have a given number of sections, or homomorphisms from another bundle. There are a number of different types, that can be treated by determinantal methods, with symmetry or skewsymmetry arising from Serre duality. They have many beautiful applications to curves, K3 surfaces and Fano 3-folds.
A $h$-instanton sheaf on a closed subscheme $X$ of some projective space endowed with an ample and globally generated line bundle $\mathcal{O}_X(h)$ is a coherent sheaf whose cohomology table has a certain prescribed shape. In this paper we deal with $h$-instanton sheaves relating them to Ulrich sheaves. Moreover, we study $h$-instanton sheaves on smooth curves and surfaces, cyclic $n$-folds, Fano $3$-folds and scrolls over arbitrary smooth curves. We also deal with a family of monads associated to $h$-instanton bundles on varieties satisfying some mild extra technical conditions.
We consider the space $\mathcal M_{q,n}$ of regular $q$-tuples of commuting nilpotent endomorphisms of $k^n$ modulo simultaneous conjugation. We show that $\mathcal M_{q,n}$ admits a natural homogeneous space structure, and that it is an affine space bundle over $\mathbb P^{q-1}$. A closer look at the homogeneous structure reveals that, over $\mathbb C$ and with respect to the complex topology, $\mathcal M_{q,n}$ is a smooth vector bundle over $\mathbb P^{q-1}$. We prove that, in this case, $\mathcal M_{q,n}$ is diffeomorphic to a direct sum of twisted tangent bundles. We also prove that $\mat…
Let $A$ be a diagonal linear operator on $\C^n$, with all eigenvalues satisfying $0<|α_i|<1$, and $M = (\C^n\backslash 0)/<A>$ the corresponding Hopf manifold. We show that any stable holomorphic bundle on $M$ can be lifted to a $G$-equivariant coherent sheaf on $\C^n$, where $G=(\C^*)^l$ is a Lie group acting on $\C^n$ and containing $A$. This is used to show that all stable bundles on $M$ are filtrable, that is, admit a filtration by a sequence $F_i$ of coherent sheaves, with all subquotients $F_i/F_{i-1}$ of rank 1.
Zero-schemes on smooth complex projective varieties, forcing all elements of ample and free linear systems to be reducible are studied. Relationships among the minimal length of such zero-schemes, the positivity of the line bundle associated with the linear system, and the dimension of the variety are established. A generalization to higher dimension subschemes is studied in the last section.
We study twisted vector bundles of infinite rank on gerbes, giving a new spin on Grothendieck's famous problem on the equality of the Brauer group and cohomological Brauer group. We show that the relaxed version of the question has an affirmative answer in many, but not all, cases, including for any algebraic space with the resolution property and any algebraic space obtained by pinching two closed subschemes of a projective scheme. We also discuss some possible theories of infinite rank Azumaya algebras, consider a new class of "very positive" infinite rank vector bundles on projective variet…
Grothendieck-Birkhoff Theorem states that every finite dimensional vector bundle over the projective line splits as the sum of one dimensional vector bundles. In this work we study simultaneous splittings of two dimensional vector bundles over a finite field using the theory of Eichler orders. In the sheaf-theoretical context, an Eichler order in a matrix algebra is the intersection of the sheaves of endomorphisms of two vector bundles, so characterizing split Eichler orders solves the problem of simultaneous splitting. We caracterize both the genera of Eichler orders containing only split Eic…
An algebraic variety X is embedded to the order k via a line bundle L if the global sections of L generate all (simultaneous) jets of order k on X or if they separate all zero-dimensional subschemes of length at most k+1. Even though we refer to both situations as "higher order embeddings", the first notion (in which case L is said to be k-jet ample) is stronger than the second one (when L is k-very ample). The purpose of this paper is to study higher order embeddings of cyclic coverings π:Y\to X via line bundles given by pulling back "sufficiently positive" line bundles on X. Given a line bun…
Let $X$ be a smooth quasi-projective algebraic surface and let $Δ_n$ the big diagonal in the product variety $X^n$. We study cohomological properties of the ideal sheaves $\mathcal{I}^k_{Δ_n}$ and their invariants $(\mathcal{I}^k_{Δ_n})^{\mathfrak{S}_n}$ by the symmetric group, seen as ideal sheaves over the symmetric variety $S^nX$. In particular we obtain resolutions of the sheaves of invariants $(\mathcal{I}_{Δ_n})^{\mathfrak{S}_n}$ for $n = 3,4$ in terms of invariants of sheaves over $X^n$ whose cohomology is easy to calculate. Moreover, we relate, via the Bridgeland-King-Reid equivalence,…
The Hitchin morphism is a map from the moduli space of Higgs bundles $\mathscr{M}_X$ to the Hitchin base $\mathscr{B}_X$, where $X$ is a smooth projective variety. When $X$ has dimension at least two, this morphism is not surjective in general. Recently, Chen-Ngô introduced a closed subscheme $\mathscr{A}_X$ of $\mathscr{B}_X$, which is called the space of spectral data. They proved that the Hitchin morphism factors through $\mathscr{A}_X$ and conjectured that $\mathscr{A}_X$ is the image of the Hitchin morphism. We prove that when $X$ is a smooth projective surface, this conjecture is true fo…
We establish a theorem computing the cohomology groups of line bundles on homogeneous ind-varieties $G/B$ for diagonal ind-groups $G$. The main difficulty in proving this analog of the classical Bott-Borel-Weil theorem is in defining an appropriate analog $W_B$ of the Weyl group so that the action of $W_B$ on weights of $G$ is compatible with the analog of the Demazure "action" of the Weyl group on the cohomology of line bundles.
Using an explicit resolution of the diagonal for the variety V_5, we provide cohomological characterizations of the universal and quotient bundles. A splitting criterion for bundles over V_5 is also proved. The presentation of semistable aCM (i.e. with no intermediate cohomology) bundles is shown, together with a resolution-theoretic classification of low rank aCM bundles.
In this paper, we study holomorphic vector bundles on (diagonal) Hopf manifolds. In particular, we give a description of moduli spaces of stable bundles on generic (non-elliptic) Hopf surfaces. We also give a classification of stable rank-2 vector bundles on generic Hopf manifolds of complex dimension greater than two.

A well-known theorem of Kapranov states that the Atiyah class of the tangent bundle $TX$ of a complex manifold $X$ makes the shifted tangent bundle $TX[-1]$ into a Lie algebra object in the derived category $D(X)$. Moreover, he showed that there is an $L_\infty$-algebra structure on the Dolbeault resolution of $TX[-1]$ and wrote down the structure maps explicitly in the case when $X$ is Kähler. The corresponding Chevalley-Eilenberg complex is isomorphic to the Dolbeault resolution of the jet bundle $\mathcal{J}^\infty_X$ via the construction of the holomorphic exponential map of the Kähler man…
In this paper differential operators on various moduli spaces (e.g. of holomorphic vector bundles) are described in a canonical way in terms of the geometry of a certain distinguished completion of an appropriate configuration space.
We use supernatural bundles to build GL-equivariant resolutions supported on the diagonal of P^n x P^n, in a way that extends Beilinson's resolution of the diagonal. We thus obtain results about supernatural bundles that largely parallel known results about exceptional collections. We apply this construction to Boij-Söderberg decompositions of cohomology tables of vector bundles, yielding a proof of concept for the idea that those positive rational decompositions should admit meaningful categorifications.
A plane curve C defined by a homogeneous polynomial satisfying Laplace's equation appears canonically as the vanishing of the Pfaffian of a skew-symmetric matrix of linear forms. As a consequence there is a natural semi-stable rank two vector bundle defined on C. We consider the case of degree 3, and apply Atiyah's classification of bundles to determine various invariant strata in the space of harmonic cubics. We encounter the Mukai-Umemura threefold and link up with the classical geometry of the Clebsch diagonal cubic surface, certain distinguished rational curves on it, and the action of the…
Consider the diagonal action of the special orthogonal group on the direct sum of a finite number of copies of the standard representation--the underlying field is assumed to be algebraically closed and of characteristic not equal to two. We construct a "standard monomial" basis for the ring of polynomial invariants for this action. We then deduce, by a deformation argument, our main result that this ring of polynomial invariants is Cohen-Macaulay. We give three applications of this result: (1) the first and second fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the above action; (2) Cohen-Macaul…
We study the null-cone of a semi-simple algebraic group acting on a number of copies of its Lie algebra via the diagonal adjoint action. We show that the null cone has rational singularities in the case of SL3. We observe by example that the null-cone is not normal in general and that the normalization of the null-cone does not have rational singularities in general. This is achieved by computing cohomology of certain vector bundles on flag varieties.
In this article we investigate Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formulae for line bundles on irreducible symplectic Kähler manifolds. As Huybrechts has shown, for every irreducible complex Kähler manifold $X$ of dimension $2n$, there are numbers $a_0, a_2, ..., a_{2n}$ such that $χ(L) = \sum_{k = 0}^n a_{2k}/(2k)! q_X(c_1(L))^k$ for the Euler characteristic of a line bundle $L$, where $q_X: H^2(X, \mathbbm C) \to \mathbbm C$ is the Beauville-Bogomolov quadratic form of $X$. Using Rozansky-Witten classes similar to Hitchin and Sawon, we obtain a formula expressing the $a_{2k}$ in terms of Chern numbers …
Lakshmibai, Mehta and Parameswaran (LMP) introduced the notion of maximal multiplicity vanishing in Frobenius splitting. In this paper we define the algebraic analogue of this concept and construct a Frobenius splitting vanishing with maximal multiplicity on the diagonal of the full flag variety. Our splitting induces a diagonal Frobenius splitting of maximal multiplicity for a special class of smooth Schubert varieties first considered by Kempf. Consequences are Frobenius splitting of tangent bundles, of blow-ups along the diagonal in flag varieties along with the LMP and Wahl conjectures in …
We study relations between two fundamental constructions associated to vector bundles on a smooth complex projective curve: the theta function (a section of a line bundle on the moduli space of vector bundles) and the Szegö kernel (a section of a vector bundle on the square of the curve). Two types of relations are demonstrated. First, we establish a higher--rank version of the prime form, describing the pullback of determinant line bundles by difference maps, and show the theta function pulls back to the determinant of the Szegö kernel. Next, we prove that the expansion of the Szegö kernel at…
Let $\bar{L}_i\lr X_i$ be a holomorphic line bundle over a compact complex manifold for $i=1,2$. Let $S_i$ denote the associated principal circle-bundle with respect to some hermitian inner product on $\bar{L}_i$. We construct complex structures on $S=S_1\times S_2$ which we refer to as {\em scalar, diagonal, and linear types}. While scalar type structures always exist, the more general diagonal but non-scalar type structures are constructed assuming that $\bar{L}_i$ are equivariant $(\bc^*)^{n_i}$-bundles satisfying some additional conditions. The linear type complex structures are constructe…
We call a sheaf on an algebraic variety immaculate if it lacks any cohomology including the zero-th one, that is, if the derived version of the global section functor vanishes. Such sheaves are the basic tools when building exceptional sequences, investigating the diagonal property, or the toric Frobenius morphism. In the present paper we focus on line bundles on toric varieties. First, we present a possibility of understanding their cohomology in terms of their (generalized) momentum polytopes. Then we present a method to exhibit the entire locus of immaculate divisors within the class group.…
