We show that the residual categories of quadric surface bundles are equivalent to the (twisted) derived categories of some scheme under the following hypotheses. Case 1: The quadric surface bundle has a smooth section. Case 2: The total space of the quadric surface bundle is smooth and the base is a smooth surface. We provide two proofs in Case 1 describing the scheme as the hyperbolic reduction and as a subscheme of the relative Hilbert scheme of lines, respectively. In Case 2, the twisted scheme is obtained by performing birational transformations to the relative Hilbert scheme of lines. Finally, we apply the results to certain complete intersections of quadrics.
We prove a general specialization theorem which implies stable irrationality for a wide class of quadric surface bundles over rational surfaces. As an application, we solve with the exception of two cases, the stable rationality problem for any very general complex projective quadric surface bundle over the projective plane, given by a symmetric matrix of homogeneous polynomials. Both exceptions degenerate over a plane sextic curve and the corresponding double cover is a K3 surface.
We classify all positive integers n and r such that (stably) non-rational complex r-fold quadric bundles over rational n-folds exist. We show in particular that for any n and r, a wide class of smooth r-fold quadric bundles over projective n-space are not stably rational if r lies in the interval from $2^{n-1}-1$ to $2^{n}-2$. In our proofs we introduce a generalization of the specialization method of Voisin and Colliot-Thélène--Pirutka which avoids universally $CH_0$-trivial resolutions of singularities.
We prove that a general $n$-fold quadric bundle $\mathcal{Q}^{n-1}\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^{1}$, over a number field, with $(-K_{\mathcal{Q}^{n-1}})^n > 0$ and discriminant of odd degree $δ_{\mathcal{Q}^{n-1}}$ is unirational, and that the same holds for quadric bundles over an arbitrary infinite field provided that $\mathcal{Q}^{n-1}$ has a point, is otherwise general and $n\leq 5$. As a consequence we get the unirationality of a general $n$-fold quadric bundle $\mathcal{Q}^{h}\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^{n-h}$ with discriminant of odd degree $δ_{\mathcal{Q}^{h}}\leq 3h+4$, and of any smooth $4$-fold …
We study smooth quadric surfaces in the Pfaffian hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{14}$ parameterising $6 \times 6$ skew-symmetric matrices of rank at most 4, not intersecting the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(1,5)$. Such surfaces correspond to quadratic systems of skew-symmetric matrices of size 6 and constant rank 4, and give rise to a globally generated vector bundle $E$ on the quadric. We analyse these bundles and their geometry, relating them to linear congruences of lines in $\mathbb{P}^5$.
In this paper, we show that if the tangent bundle of a smooth projective variety is strictly nef, then it is isomorphic to a projective space; if a projective variety $X^n$ $(n>4)$ has strictly nef $Λ^2 TX$, then it is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^n$ or quadric $\mathbb{Q}^n$. We also prove that on elliptic curves, strictly nef vector bundles are ample, whereas there exist Hermitian flat and strictly nef vector bundles on any smooth curve with genus $g\geq 2$.
A noncommutative deformation of a quadric surface is usually described by a three-dimensional cubic Artin-Schelter regular algebra. In this paper we show that for such an algebra its bounded derived category embeds into the bounded derived category of a commutative deformation of the Hilbert scheme of two points on the quadric. This is the second example in support of a conjecture by Orlov. Based on this example, we formulate an infinitesimal version of the conjecture, and provide some evidence in the case of smooth projective surfaces.
