We construct a semiorthogonal decomposition of the derived category of coherent sheaves on a quadric fibration consisting of several copies of the derived category of the base of the fibration and the derived category of coherent sheaves of modules over the sheaf of even parts of the Clifford algebras on the base corresponding to this quadric fibration, generalizing the Kapranov's description of the derived category of a single quadric. As an application we verify that the noncommutative algebraic variety $(\PP(S^2W^*),\CB_0)$, where $\CB_0$ is the universal sheaf of even parts of Clifford algebras, is Homologically Projectively Dual to the projective space $\PP(W)$ in the double Veronese embedding $\PP(W) \to \PP(S^2W)$. Using the properties of the Homological Projective Duality we obtain a description of the derived category of coherent sheaves on a complete intersection of any number of quadrics.
In this paper we deal with compactifications of affine homology $3$-cells into quadric fibrations such that the boundary divisors contain fibers. We show that all such affine homology $3$-cells are isomorphic to the affine $3$-space $\mathbb{A}^{3}$. Moreover, we show that all such compactifications can be connected by explicit elementary links preserving $\mathbb{A}^{3}$ to the projective $3$-space $\mathbb{P}^{3}$.
We consider quadric surface fibrations over curves, defined over algebraically closed and finite fields. Our goal is to understand, in geometric terms, spaces of sections for such fibrations. We analyze varieties of maximal isotropic subspaces in the fibers as P^1-bundles over the discriminant double cover. When the P^1-bundle is suitably stable, we deduce effective estimates for the heights of sections over finite fields satisfying various approximation conditions. We also discuss the behavior of the spaces of sections as the base of the fibration acquires singularities.
We obtain finiteness theorems for algebraic cycles of small codimension on quadric fibrations X over curves over perfect fields k. For example, if k is finitely generated over Q and the fibration has odd relative dimension at least 11, then CH^{i}(X) is finitely generated for i<=4.
Let X -> Y be a fibration whose fibers are complete intersections of two quadrics. We develop new categorical and algebraic tools---a theory of relative homological projective duality and the Morita invariance of the even Clifford algebra under quadric reduction by hyperbolic splitting---to study semiorthogonal decompositions of the bounded derived category of X. Together with new results in the theory of quadratic forms, we apply these tools in the case where X -> Y has relative dimension 1, 2, or 3, in which case the fibers are curves of genus 1, Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4, or Fano three…
In this short note, making use of the recent theory of noncommutative mixed motives, we prove that the Voevodsky's mixed motive of a quadric fibration over a smooth curve is Kimura-finite.
We study rationality properties of smooth complete intersections of three quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^7$. We exhibit a smooth family of such intersections with both rational and non-rational fibers.
We study rationality constructions for smooth complete intersections of two quadrics over nonclosed fields. Over the real numbers, we establish a criterion for rationality in dimension four.
This article provides, over any field, infinitely many algebraic embeddings of the affine spaces $\mathbb{A}^1$ and $\mathbb{A}^2$ into smooth quadrics of dimension two and three respectively, which are pairwise non-equivalent under automorphisms of the smooth quadric. Our main tools are the study of the birational morphism $\mathrm{SL}_2 \to \mathbb{A}^3$ and the fibration $\mathrm{SL}_2 \to \mathbb{A}^3 \to \mathbb{A}^1$ obtained by projections, as well as degenerations of variables of polynomial rings, and families of $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibrations.
Let $f : X -> B$ be a projective surjective morphism between quasi-projective varieties. The goal of this paper is the study of the Chow groups of $X$ in terms of the Chow groups of $B$ and of the fibers of $f$. One of the applications concerns quadric bundles. When $X$ and $B$ are smooth projective and when $f$ is a flat quadric fibration, we show that the motive of $X$ is "built" from the motives of varieties of dimension less than the dimension of $B$.
The topology of the intersection of three quadrics in Euclidean 6-space is studied using Kollar results. This needs an existence of a line without real points in the complex projectivisation of quadrics. We establish the existence of such a line under some assumptions. It is a step to obtain a list of all possible homeomorfism types of manifolds under consideration.
We study rationality problems for smooth complete intersections of two quadrics. We focus on the three-dimensional case, with a view toward understanding the invariants governing the rationality of a geometrically rational threefold over a non-closed field.
In this paper we classify all free actions of finite groups on Calabi-Yau complete intersection of 4 quadrics in $\PP^7$, up to projective equivalence. We get some examples of smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds with large nonabelian fundamental groups. We also observe the relation between some of these examples and moduli of polarized abelian surfaces.
We study the moduli space of smooth complete intersections of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^n$ by relating it to the geometry of the singular members of the corresponding pencils. Giving an alternative presentation for the moduli space of complete intersections, we compute the Picard group for all $n\geq 3$.
Fix a finite group $G$. We seek to classify varieties with $G$-action equivariantly birational to a representation of $G$ on affine or projective space. Our focus is odd-dimensional smooth complete intersections of two quadrics, relating the equivariant rationality problem with analogous Diophantine questions over nonclosed fields. We explore how invariants -- both classical cohomological invariants and recent symbol constructions -- control rationality in some cases.
In this paper we classify all potentially G-birationally rigid del Pezzo threefolds of degree 4 and their automorphism groups and prove the G-birational rigidity of one of them
A smooth intersection $Y$ of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^{2g+1}$ has Hodge level 1. We show that such varieties $Y$ have a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, a certain tautological subring of the Chow ring of powers of $Y$ injects into cohomology.
Given a smooth projective variety V of dimension n, one may say that V has motivic dimension less than d+1 if the cohomology of V comes from varieties of dimensions less than d+1 in some geometric way. In this paper, we show that a smooth complete interesection of k quadrics has a motivic dimension less than k.
Let ϕ: \mathbb{P}^{r}\dashrightarrow Z be a birational transformation with a smooth connected base locus scheme, where Z\subseteq\mathbb{P}^{r+c} is a nondegenerate prime Fano manifold. We call ϕa quadro-quadric special briational transformation if ϕand ϕ^{-1} are defined by linear subsystems of |\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{r}}(2)| and |\mathcal{O}_{Z}(2)| respectively. In this paper we classify quadro-quadric special birational transformations in the cases where either (i) Z is a complete intersection and the base locus scheme of ϕ^{-1} is smooth, or (ii) Z is a hypersurface.
We describe explicit birational maps from some rational complete intersections of three quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^7$ to some prime Fano manifolds together with their Sarkisov decomposition via a single Secant Flop, allowing us to recover the cohomologically associated Castelnuovo surface of general type with $K^2=2$ and $χ=4$ (the double cover of $\mathbb{P}^2$ ramified along the discriminant curve of the net of quadrics defining the complete intersection) as the minimal model of the non ruled irreducible component of the base locus of the inverse maps. In passing we also revisit and reformulate…
We prove birational superrigidity of generic Fano complete intersections $V$ of type $2^{k_1}\cdot 3^{k_2}$ in the projective space ${\mathbb P}^{2k_1+3k_2}$, under the condition that $k_2\geq 2$ and $k_1+2k_2=\mathop{\rm dim} V\geq 12$, and of a few families of Fano complete intersections of dimension 10 and 11. This is the third version: minor corrections were made, including a few typos.
The derived category of a general complete intersection of four quadrics in P^{2n-1} has a semi-orthogonal decomposition < O(-2n+9), ..., O(-1), O, D >, where D is the derived category of twisted sheaves on a certain non-algebraic complex 3-fold coming from a moduli problem. In particular, when n=4 we obtain a (twisted) derived equivalence of Calabi-Yau 3-folds predicted by Gross. This differs from Kuznetsov's result in that our construction is geometric and avoids non-commutative varieties.
Let Q -> B be a quadric fibration and T -> B a family of sextic du Val del Pezzo surfaces. Making use of the recent theory of noncommutative mixed motives, we establish a precise relation between the Schur-finiteness conjecture for Q, resp. for T, and the Schur-finiteness conjecture for B. As an application, we prove the Schur-finiteness conjecture for Q, resp. for T, when B is low-dimensional. Along the way, we obtain a proof of the Schur-finiteness conjecture for smooth complete intersections of two or three quadric hypersurfaces. Finally, we prove similar results for the Bass-finiteness con…
Let $Y$ be a smooth complete intersection of three quadrics, and assume the dimension of $Y$ is even. We show that $Y$ has a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, the Chow ring of (powers of) $Y$ displays K3-like behaviour. As a by-product of the argument, we also establish a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition for double planes.
In this paper, we investigate the existence of Ulrich bundles on a smooth complete intersection of two $4$-dimensional quadrics in $\mathbb P^5$ by two completely different methods. First, we find good ACM curves and use Serre correspondence in order to construct Ulrich bundles, which is analogous to the construction on a cubic threefold by Casanellas-Hartshorne-Geiss-Schreyer. Next, we use Bondal-Orlov's semiorthogonal decomposition of the derived category of coherent sheaves to analyze Ulrich bundles. Using these methods, we prove that any smooth intersection of two 4-dimensional quadrics in…
Our main results concern complete intersections of three real quadrics. We prove that the maximal number $B^0_2(N)$ of connected components that a regular complete intersection of three real quadrics in $\Bbb{P}^N$ can have differs at most by one from the maximal number of ovals of the submaximal depth $[(N-1)/2]$ of a real plane projective curve of degree $d=N+1$. As a consequence, we obtain a lower bound \smash{$\frac14 N^2+O(N)$} and an upper bound \smash{$\frac38 N^2+O(N)$} for $B^0_2(N)$.
Let $Y$ be a smooth complete intersection of a quadric and a cubic in $\mathbb{P}^n$, with $n$ even. We show that $Y$ has a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, the Chow ring of (powers of) $Y$ displays K3-like behaviour. As a by-product of the argument, we also establish a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition for the resolution of singularities of a general nodal cubic hypersurface of even dimension.
In [GH], Griffiths and Harris asked whether a projective complex submanifold of codimension two is determined by the moduli of its second fundamental forms. More precisely, given a nonsingular subvariety $X^n \subset {\mathbb P}^{n+2}$, the second fundamental form $II_{X,x}$ at a point $x \in X$ is a pencil of quadrics on $T_x(X)$, defining a rational map $μ^X$ from $X$ to a suitable moduli space of pencils of quadrics on a complex vector space of dimension $n$. The question raised by Griffiths and Harris was whether the image of $μ^X$ determines $X$. We study this question when $X^n \subset {…
For each nonsingular hyperelliptic curve of arbitrary genus, we construct a natural injection from the Galois cohomology of 2-torsion subgroups of Jacobian varieties of the curve to the set of isomorphism classes of nonsingular complete intersections of two quadrics. This gives a generalization of the result of Flynn and Skorobogatov.
We give uniform upper bounds for the number of rational points of height at most $B$ on non-singular complete intersections of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^3$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. To do this, we combine determinant methods with descent arguments.
In our previous works (2012, 2013), we provided a finite list of properties characterizing all potential types of quadratic birational transformations of a projective space into a factorial variety, whose base locus is smooth and irreducible. However, some existence problems remained open. Among them one had to prove that the image of a given transformation was factorial, but in two particular situations, even the mere existence of the transformation was left as an open problem. In this paper, we use computer algebra methods to construct explicitly four examples of such transformations; two of…
In this paper we present a key exchange protocol in which Alice and Bob have secret keys given by quadric surfaces embedded in a large ambient space by means of the Veronese embedding and public keys given by hyperplanes containing the embedded quadrics. Both of them reconstruct the isomorphism class of the intersection which is a curve of genus 1, which is uniquely determined by the $j$-invariant. An eavesdropper, to find this $j$-invariant, has to solve problems which are conjecturally quantum resistant.
A linear system of real quadratic forms defines a real projective variety. The real non-singular locus of this variety (more precisely of the underlying scheme) has a highly connected double cover as long as each non-zero form in the system has sufficiently high Witt index.
We study the geometry of a birational map between an intersection of a web of quadrics in seven-dimensional complex projective space that contains a plane and the double octic branched along the discriminant of the web.
We study the relation between a complex projective set C in CP^n and the set R in RP^(2n+1) defined by viewing each equation of C as a pair of real equations. Once C is presented by quadratic equations, we can apply a spectral sequence to efficiently compute the homology of R; using the fact that the (Z_2)-cohomology of R is a free H*(C)-module with two generators we can in principle reconstruct the homology of C. Explicit computations for the intersection of two complex quadrics are presented.
Let $k$ be a field with char $k\neq 2$ and $k$ be not algebraically closed. Let $a\in k\setminus k^2$ and $L=k(\sqrt{a})(x,y)$ be a field extension of $k$ where $x,y$ are algebraically independent over $k$. Assume that $σ$ is a $k$-automorphism on $L$ defined by \[ σ: \sqrt{a}\mapsto -\sqrt{a},\ x\mapsto \frac{b}{x},\ y\mapsto \frac{c(x+\frac{b}{x})+d}{y} \] where $b,c,d \in k$, $b\neq 0$ and at least one of $c,d$ is non-zero. Let $L^{\langleσ\rangle}=\{u\in L:σ(u)=u\}$ be the fixed subfield of $L$. We show that $L^{\langleσ\rangle}$ is isomorphic to the function field of a certain surface in …
In this paper we introduce a certain class of families of Hessenberg varieties arising from Springer theory for symmetric spaces. We study the geometry of those Hessenberg varieties and investigate their monodromy representations in detail using the geometry of complete intersections of quadrics. We obtain decompositions of these monodromy representations into irreducibles and compute the Fourier transforms of the IC complexes associated to these irreducible representations. The results of the paper refine (part of) the Springer correspondece for the split symmetric pair (SL(N),SO(N)) in [CVX2…
We study equations in four variables (x,y,z,t) of the shape q(x,y,z)=P(t), where q(x,y,z) is an indefinite ternary quadratic form over the integers and P(t) is a polynomial in one variable with integral coefficients. If P(t) is not the product of a constant and the square of a polynomial, strong approximation holds for integral solutions (x,y,z,t). In the general case, we show that the integral Brauer-Manin conditions are the only obstructions to strong approximation. We actually study the analogous situation over an arbitrary number field. --- Nous étudions les équations à quatre variables (x…
