A real viewpoint on the intersection of complex quadrics and its topology

We study the relation between a complex projective set C in CP^n and the set R in RP^(2n+1) defined by viewing each equation of C as a pair of real equations. Once C is presented by quadratic equations, we can apply a spectral sequence to efficiently compute the homology of R; using the fact that the (Z_2)-cohomology of R is a free H*(C)-module with two generators we can in principle reconstruct the homology of C. Explicit computations for the intersection of two complex quadrics are presented.

The total Betti number of the intersection of three real quadrics

We prove that the total Betti number of the intersection X of three quadrics in RP^n is bounded by n(n+1). This bound improves the classical Barvinok's one which is at least of order three in n.

Complexity of intersections of real quadrics and topology of symmetric determinantal varieties

Let X be the base locus of a linear system W of k quadrics. Let also S be the intersection of W with the discriminant hypersurface in the space of all homogeneous polynomials of degree two. We prove a formula relating the topology of X with the one of S and its (iterated) singular points. As a corollary we prove the sharp bound b(X)\leq O(n)^{k-1}.

Random matrices and the average topology of the intersection of two quadrics

Let X_R be the zero locus in RP^n of one or two independently and Weyl distributed random real quadratic forms (this is the same as requiring that the corresponding symmetric matrices are in the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble). We prove that the sum of the Betti numbers of X_R behaves asymptotically as n (when n goes to infinity). The methods we use combine Random Matrix Theory, Integral geometry and spectral sequences.

Chow groups of intersections of quadrics via homological projective duality and (Jacobians of) noncommutative motives

The Beilinson-Bloch type conjectures predict that the low degree rational Chow groups of intersections of quadrics are one dimensional. This conjecture was proved by Otwinowska. Making use of homological projective duality and the recent theory of (Jacobians of) noncommutative Chow motives, we give an alternative proof of this conjecture in the case of a complete intersection of either two quadrics or three odd-dimensional quadrics. We study the topology of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds N in C^m constructed from intersections of real quadrics in a work of the first author. On the connectivity of some complete intersections

We show that the complement of a degree $d$ hypersurface in a projective complete intersection, whose defining equations have degrees strictly larger than $d$, has a rational connectivity higher than expected. The key new feature is that a positivity result replaces the usual transversality conditions needed to get such connectivity results.

Some remarks concerning Voevodsky's nilpotence conjecture

In this note we extend Voevodsky's nilpotence conjecture from smooth projective schemes to the broader setting of smooth proper dg categories. Making use of this noncommutative generalization, we then address Voevodsky's original conjecture in the following cases: quadric fibrations, intersection of quadrics, linear sections of Grassmannians, linear sections of determinantal varieties, homological projective duals, and Moishezon manifolds.
