We use character sums to confirm several recent conjectures of V. I. Arnold on the uniformity of distribution properties of a certain dynamical system in a finite field. On the other hand, we show that some conjectures are wrong. We also analyze several other conjectures of V. I. Arnold related to the orbit length of similar dynamical systems in residue rings and outline possible ways to prove them. We also show that some of them require further tuning.
In this paper, as an extension of the integer case, we define polynomial functions over the residue class rings of Dedekind domains, and then we give canonical representations and counting formulas for such polynomial functions. In particular, we give an explicit formula for the number of polynomial functions over the residue class rings of polynomials over finite fields.
In this paper, as an analogue of the integer case, we define congruence preserving functions over the residue class rings of polynomials over finite fields. We establish a counting formula for such congruence preserving functions, determine a necessary and sufficient condition under which all congruence preserving functions are also polynomial functions, and characterize such functions.
In the present paper, we generalize some of the results on Kloosterman sums proven in \cite{BG} for prime moduli to general moduli. This requires to establish the corresponding additive properties of the reciprocal set $$ I^{-1}=\{x^{-1}:\quad x\in I\}, $$ where $I$ is an interval in the ring of residue classes modulo a large positive integer. We apply our bounds on multilinear exponential sums to the Brun-Titchmarsh theorem and the estimate of very short Kloosterman sums, hence generalizing our earlier work to the setting of general modulus.
Let $n\ge 1, e\ge 1, k\ge 2$ and $c$ be integers. An integer $u$ is called a unit in the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$ of residue classes modulo $n$ if $\gcd(u, n)=1$. A unit $u$ is called an exceptional unit in the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$ if $\gcd(1-u,n)=1$. We denote by $\mathcal{N}_{k,c,e}(n)$ the number of solutions $(x_1,...,x_k)$ of the congruence $x_1^e+...+x_k^e\equiv c \pmod n$ with all $x_i$ being exceptional units in the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$. In 2017, Mollahajiaghaei presented a formula for the number of solutions $(x_1,...,x_k)$ of the congruence $x_1^2+...+x_k^2\equiv c\pmod n$ with all $x_i$ be…
In this article, we study the structure of finitely ramified mixed characteristic valued fields. For any two complete discrete valued fields $K_1$ and $K_2$ of mixed characteristic with perfect residue fields, we show that if the $n$-th residue rings are isomorphic for each $n\ge 1$, then $K_1$ and $K_2$ are isometric and isomorphic. More generally, for $n_1\ge 1$, there is $n_2$ depending only on the ramification indices of $K_1$ and $K_2$ such that any homomorphism from the $n_1$-th residue ring of $K_1$ to the $n_2$-th residue ring of $K_2$ can be lifted to a homomorphism between the valuat…
Nikolai Durov introduced the theory of generalized rings and schemes to study Arakelov geometry in an alternative algebraic framework, and introduced the residue field at the infinite place. We show an elementary algebraic approach to modules and algebras over this object, define prime congruences, show that the polynomial ring of n variables is of Krull dimension n, and derive a prime decomposition theorem for these primes.
Let $\mathcal{R}=\mathbb{F}_{p}+u\mathbb{F}_{p}+u^2\mathbb{F}_{p}+u^3\mathbb{F}_{p}$ with $u^4=u$ be a finite non-chain ring, where $p$ is a prime congruent to $1$ modulo $3$. In this paper we study $(1-2u^3)$-constacyclic codes over the ring $\mathcal{R}$, their equivalence to cyclic codes and find their Gray images. To illustrate this, examples of $(1-2u^3)$-constacyclic codes of lengths $2^m$ for $p=7$ and of lengths $3^m$ for $p=19$ are given. We also discuss quadratic residue codes over the ring $\mathcal{R}$ and their extensions. A Gray map from $\mathcal{R}$ to $\mathbb{F}_{p}^4$ is def…
Recent breakthrough methods \cite{gggz,joux,bgjt} on computing discrete logarithms in small characteristic finite fields share an interesting feature in common with the earlier medium prime function field sieve method \cite{jl}. To solve discrete logarithms in a finite extension of a finite field $\F$, a polynomial $h(x) \in \F[x]$ of a special form is constructed with an irreducible factor $g(x) \in \F[x]$ of the desired degree. The special form of $h(x)$ is then exploited in generating multiplicative relations that hold in the residue class ring $\F[x]/h(x)\F[x]$ hence also in the target res…
We investigate non-unique factorization of polynomials in Z_{p^n}[x] into irreducibles. As a Noetherian ring whose zero-divisors are contained in the Jacobson radical, Z_{p^n}[x] is atomic. We reduce the question of factoring arbitrary non-zero polynomials into irreducibles to the problem of factoring monic polynomials into monic irreducibles. The multiplicative monoid of monic polynomials of Z_{p^n}[x] is a direct sum of monoids corresponding to irreducible polynomials in Z_p[x], and we show that each of these monoids has infinite elasticity. Moreover, for every positive integer m, there exis…
Let $m\geq 2$ be any natural number and let $\mathcal{R}=\mathbb{F}_{p}+u\mathbb{F}_{p}+u^2\mathbb{F}_{p}+\cdots+u^{m-1}\mathbb{F}_{p}$ be a finite non-chain ring, where $u^m=u$ and $p$ is a prime congruent to $1$ modulo $(m-1)$. In this paper we study quadratic residue codes over the ring $\mathcal{R}$ and their extensions. A gray map from $\mathcal{R}$ to $\mathbb{F}_{p}^m$ is defined which preserves self duality of linear codes. As a consequence self dual, formally self dual and self orthogonal codes are constructed. To illustrate this several examples of self-dual, self orthogonal and form…
In 1974, Vegh proved that if $k$ is a prime and $m$ a positive integer, there is an $m$ term permutation chain of $k$th power residue for infinitely many primes [E.Vegh, $k$th power residue chains, J.Number Theory, 9(1977), 179-181]. In fact, his proof showed that $1,2,2^2,...,2^{m-1}$ is an $m$ term permutation chain of $k$th power residue for infinitely many primes. In this paper, we prove that for any "possible" $m$ term sequence $r_1,r_2,...,r_m$, there are infinitely many primes $p$ making it an $m$ term permutation chain of $k$th power residue modulo $p$, where $k$ is an arbitrary positi…
We study the inverse problem for the versal deformation rings $R(Γ,V)$ of finite dimensional representations $V$ of a finite group $Γ$ over a field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$. This problem is to determine which complete local commutative Noetherian rings with residue field $k$ can arise up to isomorphism as such $R(Γ,V)$. We show that for all integers $n \ge 1$ and all complete local commutative Noetherian rings $\mathcal{W}$ with residue field $k$, the ring $\mathcal{W}[[t]]/(p^n t,t^2)$ arises in this way. This ring is not a local complete intersection if $p^n\mathcal{W}\neq\{0\}$, s…
We consider the dynamical system created by iterating a morphism of a projective variety defined over the field of fractions of a discrete valuation ring. We study the primitive period of a periodic point in this field in relation to the primitive period of the reduced point in the residue field, the order of the action on the cotangent space, and the characteristic of the residue field.
In this note we, first, recall that the sets of all representatives of some special ordinary residue classes become $\left( m,n\right) $-rings. Second, we introduce a possible $p$-adic analog of the residue class modulo a $p$-adic integer. Then, we find the relations which determine, when the representatives form a $\left( m,n\right) $-ring. At the very short spacetime scales such rings could lead to new symmetries of modern particle models.
In 1968 Tate introduced a new approach to residues on algebraic curves, based on a certain ring of operators that acts on the completion at a point of the function field of the curve. This approach was generalized to higher dimensional algebraic varieties by Beilinson in 1980. However Beilinson's paper had very few details, and his operator-theoretic construction remained cryptic for many years. Currently there is a renewed interest in the Beilinson-Tate approach to residues in higher dimensions. Our paper presents a variant of Beilinson's operator-theoretic construction. We consider an n-dime…
Let $K$ be a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation field with residue field admitting a finite $p$-basis, and let $G_K$ be the Galois group. We first classify semi-stable representations of $G_K$ by weakly admissible filtered $(φ,N)$-modules with connections. We then construct a fully faithful functor from the category of \emph{integral} semi-stable representations of $G_K$ to the category of Breuil-Kisin $G_K$-modules. Using the integral theory, we classify $p$-divisible groups over the ring of integers of $K$ by minuscule Breuil-Kisin modules with connections.
We previously obtained a generalization and refinement of results about the ramification theory of Artin-Schreier extensions of discretely valued fields in characteristic $p$ with perfect residue fields to the case of fields with more general valuations and residue fields. As seen in VT16, the "defect" case gives rise to many interesting complications. In this paper, we present analogous results for degree $p$ extensions of arbitrary valuation rings in mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ in a more general setting. More specifically, the only assumption here is that the base field $K$ is henselian. In…
Let $K$ be a complete discretely valued field with mixed characteristic $(0, p)$ and imperfect residue field $k_K$. Let $Δ$ be a finite set. We construct an equivalence of categories between finite dimensional $\Bbb{F}_p$-representations of the product of $Δ$ copies of the absolute Galois group of $K$ and multivariable \' etale $(φ, Γ)$-modules over a multivariable Laurent series ring over $k_K$.
Let p be an odd prime. We show that the classification of p-divisible groups by Breuil windows and the classification of finite flat group schemes of p-power order by Breuil modules hold over any complete regular local ring with perfect residue field of characteristic p. We use a formalism of frames and windows with an abstract deformation theory that applies to Breuil windows.
Given an elliptic curve $E$ in Legendre form $y^2 = x(x - 1)(x - λ)$ over the fraction field of a Henselian ring $R$ of mixed characteristic $(0, 2)$, we present an algorithm for determining a semistable model of $E$ over $R$ which depends only on the valuation of $λ$. We provide several examples along with an easy corollary concerning $2$-torsion.
Let $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with the finite residue field $R/\mathfrak{m} = \mathbb{F}_{q}$. Given a monic polynomial $P(t) \in R[t]$ whose reduction modulo $\mathfrak{m}$ gives an irreducible polynomial $\bar{P}(t) \in \mathbb{F}_{q}[t]$, we initiate the investigation of the distribution of $\mathrm{coker}(P(A))$, where $A \in \mathrm{Mat}_{n}(R)$ is randomly chosen with respect to the Haar probability measure on the additive group $\mathrm{Mat}_{n}(R)$ of $n \times n$ $R$-matrices. One of our main results generalizes two results of Friedman and Washington. O…
Let $K$ be a complete discrete valued field of characteristic zero with residue field $k_K$ of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois extension with the Galois group $G$ and suppose that the induced extension of residue fields $k_L/k_K$ is separable. In his paper, Hesselholt conjectured that $H^1(G,W(\sO_L))$ is zero, where $\sO_L$ is the ring of integers of $L$ and $W(\sO_L)$ is the Witt ring of $\sO_L$ w.r.t. the prime $p$. He partially proved this conjecture for a large class of extensions. In this paper, we prove Hesselholt's conjecture for all Galois extensions.
We give a characterization, in terms of the residue field, of those henselian valuation rings and those henselian valuation ideals that are diophantine. This characterization gives a common generalization of all the positive and negative results on diophantine henselian valuation rings and diophantine valuation ideals in the literature. We also treat questions of uniformity and we apply the results to show that a given field can carry at most one diophantine nontrivial equicharacteristic henselian valuation ring or valuation ideal.
Let k>1 be an integer and let p be a prime. We show that if $p^a\le k<2p^a$ or $k=p^aq+1$ (with 2q<p) for some a=1,2,..., then the set {\binom{n}{k}: n=0,1,2,...} is dense in the ring Z_p of p-adic integers, i.e., it contains a complete system of residues modulo any power of p.
Let $p$ be a prime. Let $R$ be a regular local ring of dimension $d\ge 2$ whose completion is isomorphic to $C(k)[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]/(h)$, with $C(k)$ a Cohen ring with the same residue field $k$ as $R$ and with $h\in C(k)[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]$ such that its reduction modulo $p$ does not belong to the ideal $(x_1^p,\ldots,x_d^p)+(x_1,\ldots,x_d)^{2p-2}$ of $k[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]$. We extend a result of Vasiu-Zink (for $d=2$) to show that each Barsotti-Tate group over $\text{Frac}(R)$ which extends to every local ring of $\text{Spec}(R)$ of dimension $1$, extends uniquely to a Barsotti-Tate group ove…
