By some extremely simple arguments, we point out the following: (i) If n is the least positive k-th power non-residue modulo a positive integer m, then the greatest number of consecutive k-th power residues mod m is smaller than m/n. (ii) Let O_K be the ring of algebraic integers in a quadratic field $K=Q(\sqrt d)$ with d in {-1,-2,-3,-7,-11}. Then, for any irreducible $π\in O_K$ and positive integer k not relatively prime to $π\barπ-1$, there exists a k-th power non-residue $ω\in O_K$ modulo $π$ such that $|ω|<\sqrt{|π|}+0.65$.
We give an explicit version of a result due to D. Burgess. Let $χ$ be a non-principal Dirichlet character modulo a prime $p$. We show that the maximum number of consecutive integers for which $χ$ takes on a particular value is less than $\left\{\frac{πe\sqrt{6}}{3}+o(1)\right\}p^{1/4}\log p$, where the $o(1)$ term is given explicitly.
Issai Schur once asked if it was possible to determine a bound, preferably using elementary methods, such that for all prime numbers p greater than the bound, the greatest number of consecutive quadratic non-residues modulo p is always less than the square root of p. This paper uses elementary methods to prove that 13 is the only prime number for which the greatest number of consecutive quadratic non-residues modulo p exceeds the square root of p.
This article provides a proof of a generalization of Schur's theorem on the partition regularity of the equation x+y=z, which involves a divisibility condition. This generalization will be utilized to prove the existence of 'small' consecutive power residues modulo p, where p is a sufficiently large prime.
While the sequence of primes is very well distributed in the reduced residue classes (mod $q$), the distribution of pairs of consecutive primes among the permissible $ϕ(q)^2$ pairs of reduced residue classes (mod $q$) is surprisingly erratic. This paper proposes a conjectural explanation for this phenomenon, based on the Hardy-Littlewood conjectures. The conjectures are then compared to numerical data, and the observed fit is very good.
We prove that any prime $p$ satisfying $ϕ(p-1)\leq (p-1)/4$ contains two consecutive quadratic non-residues modulo $p$ neither of which is a primitive root modulo $p$.
For positive integers $q$, Dirichlet's theorem states that there are infinitely many primes in each reduced residue class modulo $q$. A stronger form of the theorem states that the primes are equidistributed among the $φ(q)$ reduced residue classes modulo $q$. This paper considers patterns of sequences of consecutive primes $(p_n, p_{n+1}, \ldots, p_{n+k})$ modulo $q$. Numerical evidence suggests a preference for certain prime patterns. For example, computed frequencies of the pattern $(a,a)$ modulo $q$ up to $x$ are much less than the expected frequency $π(x)/φ(q)^2$. We begin to rigorously c…
For a prime $p\ge 5$ let $q_0,q_1,\ldots,q_{(p-3)/2}$ be the quadratic residues modulo $p$ in increasing order. We study two $(p-3)/2$-periodic binary sequences $(d_n)$ and $(t_n)$ defined by $d_n=q_n+q_{n+1}\bmod 2$ and $t_n=1$ if $q_{n+1}=q_n+1$ and $t_n=0$ otherwise, $n=0,1,\ldots,(p-5)/2$. For both sequences we find some sufficient conditions for attaining the maximal linear complexity $(p-3)/2$. Studying the linear complexity of $(d_n)$ was motivated by heuristics of Caragiu et al. However, $(d_n)$ is not balanced and we show that a period of $(d_n)$ contains about $1/3$ zeros and $2/3$ o…
In this note, we revisit a result of Benli's and Pollack's on the number of small prime $k^{th}$ power residues. The proof is based on their idea of using reciprocity laws, but the argument is simplified and we prove a slightly stronger bound.
We show by an inclusion-exclusion argument that the prime $k$-tuple conjecture of Hardy and Littlewood provides an asymptotic formula for the number of consecutive prime numbers which are a specified distance apart. This refines one aspect of a theorem of Gallagher that the prime $k$-tuple conjecture implies that the prime numbers are distributed in a Poisson distribution around their average spacing.
Nagell proved that for each prime $p\equiv 1\pmod{3}$, $p > 7$, there is a prime $q<2p^{1/2}$ that is a cubic residue modulo $p$. Here we show that for each fixed $ε> 0$, and each prime $p\equiv 1\pmod{3}$ with $p > p_0(ε)$, the number of prime cubic residues $q < p^{1/2+ε}$ exceeds $p^{ε/30}$. Our argument, like Nagell's, is rooted in the law of cubic reciprocity; somewhat surprisingly, character sum estimates play no role. We use the same method to establish related results about prime quadratic and biquadratic residues. For example, for all large primes $p$, there are more than $p^{1/9}$ pr…
The following is proven using arguments that do not revolve around the Riemann Hypothesis or Sieve Theory. If $p_n$ is the $n^{\rm th}$ prime and $g_n=p_{n+1}-p_n$, then $g_n=O({p_n}^{2/3})$.
Using only elementary arguments, Cassels solved the Diophantine equation $(x-1)^3+x^3+(x+1)^3=z^2$ in integers $x$, $z$. The generalization $(x-1)^k+x^k+(x+1)^k=z^n$ (with $x$, $z$, $n$ integers and $n \ge 2$) was considered by Zhongfeng Zhang who solved it for $k=2$, $3$, $4$ using Frey-Hellegouarch curves and their Galois representations. In this paper, by employing some sophisticated refinements of this approach, we show that the only solution for $k=5$ is $x=z=0$, and that there are no solutions for $k=6$. The chief innovation we employ is a computational one, which enables us to avoid the…
In 2016, in the work related to Galois representations, Greenberg conjectured the existence of multi-quadratic $p$-rational number fields of degree $2^{t}$ for any odd prime number $p$ and any integer $t \geq 1$. Using the criteria provided by him to check $p$-rationality for abelian number fields, certain infinite families of quadratic, biquadratic and triquadratic $p$-rational fields have been shown to exist in recent years. In this article, for any integer $k \geq 1$, we build upon the existing work and prove the existence of infinitely many prime numbers $p$ for which the imaginary quadrat…
The Dirichlet characters of reduced residue systems modulo m are tabulated for moduli m <= 195. The associated L-series are tabulated for m <= 14 and small positive integer argument s accurate to 10^(-50), their first derivatives for m <= 6. Restricted summation over primes only defines Dirichlet Prime L-functions which lead to Euler products (Prime Zeta Modulo functions). Both are materialized over similar ranges of moduli and arguments. Formulas and numerical techniques are well known; the aim is to provide direct access to reference values.
Using only elementary arguments, Cassels and Uchiyama (independently) determined all squares that are sums of three consecutive cubes. Zhongfeng Zhang extended this result and determined all perfect powers that are sums of three consecutive cubes. Recently, the equation $(x-r)^k + x^k + (x+r)^k$ has been studied for $k=4$ by Zhongfeng Zhang and for $k=2$ by Koutsianas. In this paper, we complement the work of Cassels, Koutsianas and Zhang by considering the case when $k=3$ and showing that the equation $(x-r)^3+x^3+(x+r)^3=y^n$ with $n\geq 5$ a prime and $0 < r \leq 10^6$ only has trivial solu…
Suppose that some harmonic analysis arguments have been invoked to show that the indicator function of a set of residue classes modulo some integer has a large Fourier coefficient. To get information about the structure of the set of residue classes, we then need a certain type of complementary result. A solution to this problem was given by Gregory Freiman in 1961, when he proved a lemma which relates the value of an exponential sum with the distribution of summands in semi-circles of the unit circle in the complex plane. Since then, Freiman's Lemma has been extended by several authors. Rathe…
It is commonly believed that the normalized gaps between consecutive ordinates $t_n$ of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line can be arbitrarily large. In particular, drawing on analogies with random matrix theory, it has been conjectured that $$λ' ={ lim ~ sup} ~( t_{n+1} - t_n ) \frac{ \log( t_n /2 πe)}{2π}$$ equals $\infty$. In this article we provide arguments, although not a rigorous proof, that $λ'$ is finite. Conditional on the Riemann Hypothesis, we show that if there are no changes of branch between consecutive zeros then $λ' \leq 3$, otherwise $λ'$ is allowed to…
Given an integer $q$ and a polynomial $f\in \mathbb Z_{q}[X]$ of degree $d$ with coefficients in the residue ring $\mathbb Z_q=\mathbb Z/q\mathbb Z,$ we obtain new results concerning the number of solutions to congruences of the form $$y\equiv f(x) \pmod{q},$$ with integer variables lying in some cube $\mathcal B$ of side length $H$. Our argument uses ideas of Cilleruelo, Garaev, Ostafe and Shparlinski which reduces the problem to the Vinogradov mean value theorem and a lattice point counting problem. We treat the lattice point problem differently using transference principles from the Geometr…

We investigate the race between prime numbers in many residue classes modulo $q$, assuming the standard conjectures GRH and LI. Among our results we exhibit, for the first time, prime races modulo $q$ with $n$ competitor classes where the biases do not dissolve when $n, q\to \infty$. We also study the leaders in the prime number race, obtaining asymptotic formulae for logarithmic densities when the number of competitors can be as large as a power of $q$, whereas previous methods could only allow a power of $\log q$. The proofs use harmonic analysis related to the Hardy--Littlewood circle metho…
