Let G be a linear algebraic group over a field F and X be a projective homogeneous G-variety such that G splits over the function field of X. In the present paper we introduce an invariant of G called J-invariant which characterizes the motivic behaviour of X. This generalizes the respective notion invented by A. Vishik in the context of quadratic forms. As a main application we obtain a uniform proof of all known motivic decompositions of generically split projective homogeneous varieties (Severi-Brauer varieties, Pfister quadrics, maximal orthogonal Grassmannians, G2- and F4-varieties) as well as provide new examples (exceptional varieties of types E6, E7 and E8). We also discuss relations with torsion indices, canonical dimensions and cohomological invariants of the group G.
The purpose of this paper is to lay the foundations of a theory of invariants in étale cohomology for smooth Artin stacks. We compute the invariants in the case of the stack of elliptic curves, and we use the theory we developed to get some results regarding Brauer groups of algebraic spaces.
We discuss relations between certain invariants of varieties in positive characteristic, like the a-number and the height of the Artin-Mazur formal group. We calculate the a-number for Fermat surfaces
In the present article we discuss different approaches to cohomological invariants of algebraic groups over a field. We focus on the Tits algebras and on the Rost invariant and relate them to the Morava K-theory. Furthermore, we discuss oriented cohomology theories of affine varieties and the Rost motives for different cohomology theories in the sense of Levine-Morel.
We introduce four invariants of algebraic varieties over imperfect fields, each of which measures either geometric non-normality or geometric non-reducedness. The first objective of this article is to establish fundamental properties of these invariants. We then apply our results to curves over imperfect fields. In particular, we establish a genus change formula and prove the boundedness of non-smooth regular curves of genus one. We also compute our invariants for some explicit examples.
We construct an infinitesimal invariant for cycles in a family with cohomology class in the total space lying in a given level of the Leray filtration. This infinitesimal invariant detects cycles modulo algebraic equivalence in the fibers. We apply this construction to the Ikeda family, which gives optimal results for the Beauville decomposition of the 1-cycle of a very general plane curve in its Jacobian.
An algebraic GKM manifold is a non-singular algebraic variety equipped with an algebraic action of an algebraic torus, with only finitely many torus fixed points and finitely many 1-dimensional orbits. In this expository article, we use virtual localization to express equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of any algebraic GKM manifold (which is not necessarily compact) in terms of Hodge integrals over moduli stacks of stable curves and the GKM graph of the GKM manifold.
The aim of this paper is to give another proof to a result on the image of a homogeneous quadratic map which is positive with respect to a homogeneous cone, given by Graczyk and Ishi in 2014. The new proof depends on a purely algebraic method, whereas the original depends on analytic arguments. This enables us to give explicit formulas of the basic relative invariants of homogeneous cones, obtained by the previous paper [J. Lie Theory 24 (2014), 1013--1032] without analytic arguments.
Let $X$ be a projective algebraic manifold and let $CH^r(X)$ be the Chow group of algebraic cycles of codimension $r$ on $X$, modulo rational equivalence. Working with a candidate Bloch-Beilinson filtration $\{F^ν\}_{ν\geq 0}$ on $CH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q}$ due to the second author, we construct a space of arithmetic Hodge theoretic invariants $\nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$ and corresponding map $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν} : Gr_{F}^νCH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q} \to \nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$, and determine conditions on $X$ for which the kernel and image of $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν}$ are ``uncountably large''.
Let X be an affine irreducible variety over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero. Given an automorphism F, we denote by k(X)^F its field of invariants, i.e. the set of rational functions f on X such that f(F)=f. Let n(F) be the transcendence degree of k(X)^F over k. In this paper, we study the class of automorphisms F of X for which n(F)= dim X - 1. More precisely, we show that under some conditions on X, every such automorphism is of the form F=A_g, where A is an algebraic action of a linear algebraic group G of dimension 1 on X, and where g belongs to G. As an application, …
Let $X$ be an irreducible algebraic variety over $\mathbb{C}$, endowed with an algebraic foliation ${\cal{F}}$. In this paper, we introduce the notion of minimal invariant variety $V({\cal{F}},Y)$ with respect to $({\cal{F}},Y)$, where $Y$ is a subvariety of $X$. If $Y=\{x\}$ is a smooth point where the foliation is regular, its minimal invariant variety is simply the Zariski closure of the leaf passing through $x$. First we prove that for very generic $x$, the varieties $V({\cal{F}},x)$ have the same dimension $p$. Second we generalize a result due to X. Gomez-Mont. More precisely, we prove t…
Let $X$ be a real algebraic convex 3-manifold whose real part is equipped with a $Pin^-$ structure. We show that every irreducible real rational curve with non-empty real part has a canonical spinor state belonging to $\{\pm 1\}$. The main result is then that the algebraic count of the number of real irreducible rational curves in a given numerical equivalence class passing through the appropriate number of points does not depend on the choice of the real configuration of points, provided that these curves are counted with respect to their spinor states. These invariants provide lower bounds f…
The Konno invariant of a projective variety X is the minimum geometric genus of the fiber of a rational pencil on X. It was computed by Konno for surfaces in P^3, and in general can be viewed as a measure of the complexity of X. We estimate Konno(X) for some natural classes of varieties, including sharp asymptotics for polarized K3 surfaces. In an appendix, we give a quick proof of a classical formula due to Deligne and Hoskin for the colength of an integrally closed ideal on a surface.
The Euler characteristic of the link of a real algebraic variety is an interesting topological invariant in order to discuss local topological properties. We prove in the paper that an invariant stronger than the Euler Characteristic is well defined for the link of an algebraic variety: its virtual Poincaré polynomial.
This paper is a survey on arc spaces, a recent topic in algebraic geometry and singularity theory. The geometry of the arc space of an algebraic variety yields several new geometric invariants and brings new light to some classical invariants.
Let $S$ be a smooth del Pezzo surface over a field $k$ of characteristic $\neq 2, 3$. We define an invariant in the Grothendieck-Witt ring $GW(k)$ for "counting" rational curves in a curve class $D$ of fixed positive degree (with respect to the anti-canonical bundle $-K_S$) and containing a collection of distinct closed points $\mathfrak{p}=\sum_ip_i$ of total degree $r:=-D\cdot K_S-1$ on $S$. This recovers Welschinger's invariant in case $k=\mathbb{R}$ by applying the signature map. The main result is that this quadratic invariant depends only on the $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected component contain…
We construct an invariant of parametrized generic real algebraic surfaces in RP^3 which generalizes the Brown invariant of immersed surfaces from smooth topology. The invariant is constructed using the self intersection, which is a real algebraic curve with points of three local characters: the intersection of two real sheets, the intersection of two complex conjugate sheets or a Whitney umbrella. The Brown invariant was expressed through a self linking number of the self intersection by Kirby and Melvin. We extend the definition of this self linking number to the case of parametrized generic …
We classify noninvertible, holomorphic selfmaps of the projective plane that preserve an algebraic web. In doing so, we obtain interesting examples of critically finite maps.
This paper, yet another account of Seiberg-Witten theory and its consequences for algebraic surfaces, is the written version of the author's talk at the Santa Cruz conference.
In our previous work, we provided an algebraic proof of the Zinger's comparison formula between genus one Gromov-Witten invariants and reduced invariants when the target space is a complete intersection of dimension two or three in a projective space. In this paper, we extend the result in any dimensions and for descendant invariants.
Gromov-Witten invariants for arbitrary projective varieties and arbitrary genus are constructed using the techniques from K. Behrend, B. Fantechi: The intrinsic normal cone.
A simple method of constructing a big stock of algebraic varieties with trivial Makar-Limanov invariant is described, the Derksen invariant of some varieties is computed, the generalizations of the Makar-Limanov and Derksen invariants are introduced and discussed, and some results on the Jordan property of automorphism groups of algebraic varieties are obtained.
We show that $U(k)$-invariant hypercomplex structures on (open subsets) of regular semisimple adjoint orbits in $\mathfrak{gl}(k,{\mathbb C})$ correspond to algebraic curves $C$ of genus $(k-1)^2$, equipped with a flat projection $π:C\to{\mathbb P}^1$ of degree $k$, and an antiholomorphic involution $σ:C\to C$ covering the antipodal map on ${\mathbb P}^1$.
The paper is a colloquial-style discussion of invariants of algebraic surfaces analogous to the Donaldson polynomials, arising from moduli spaces of ``jumping'' Yang--Mills instantons, or moduli spaces of jumping vector bundles. The invariants have the following applications: (1) to the Van de Ven conjecture that the Kodaira dimension is a diffeomorphism invariant; (2) to proving that algebraic surfaces with $p_g > 0$ have a proper sublattice of $H^2(X,\Z)$ invariant under diffeomorphism; (3) to proving the same result as (2) for surfaces with $p_g = 0$, in particular the Barlow surface.
We exhibit an algorithm to compute the strongest algebraic (or polynomial) invariants that hold at each location of a given unguarded linear hybrid automaton (i.e., a hybrid automaton having only unguarded transitions, all of whose assignments are given by affine expressions, and all of whose continuous dynamics are given by linear differential equations). Our main tool is a control-theoretic result of independent interest: given such a linear hybrid automaton, we show how to discretise the continuous dynamics in such a way that the resulting automaton has precisely the same algebraic invarian…
In the present notes we provide a new uniform way to compute a canonical p-dimension of a split algebraic group G for a torsion prime p using degrees of basic polynomial invariants described by V.Kac. As an application, we compute the canonical p-dimensions for all split exceptional algebraic groups.
For a complex projective manifold Gromov-Witten invariants can be constructed either algebraically or symplectically. Using the versions of Gromov-Witten theory by Behrend and Fantechi on the algebraic side and by the author on the symplectic side, we prove that both points of view give the same results. A similar statement has been obtained independently by Li and Tian using their definitions of algebraic and symplectic Gromov-Witten invariants (alg-geom/9712035).
In the paper we formulate and derive the family blowup formula of family Seiberg-Witten invariants. The formula has been used in the enumerative application of counting singular curves on algebraic surfaces. We first give a topological derivation of the formula by using family index theorem. Then we define the algebraic (family) Seiberg-Witten invariants for algebraic surfaces and then give an algebraic derivation of the family blowup formula for the algebraic family Seiberg-Witten invariants.
We relate the geometry of the resonance varieties associated to a commutative differential graded algebra model of a space to the finiteness properties of the completions of its Alexander-type invariants. We also describe in simple algebraic terms the non-translated components of the degree-one characteristic varieties for a class of non-proper complex manifolds.
A. Zinger defined reduced Gromov-Witten (GW) invariants and proved a comparison theorem of standard and reduced genus one GW invariants for every symplectic manifold (with all dimension). H. -L. Chang and J. Li provided a proof of the comparison theorem for quintic Calabi-Yau 3-folds in algebraic geometry by taking a definition of reduced invariants as an Euler number of certain vector bundle. T. Coates and C. Manolache have defined reduced GW invariants in algebraic geometry following the idea by Vakil and Zinger and proved the comparison theorem for every Calabi-Yau threefold. In this paper,…
Let G be complex linear-algebraic group, H a subgroup, which is dense in G in the Zariski-topology. Assume that G/[G,G] is reductive and furthermore that (1) G is solvable, or (2) the semisimple elements in G'=[G,G] are dense. Then every H-invariant holomorphic function on G is constant. If G=G', furthermore every H-invariant meromorphic or plurisubharmonic function is constant. Finally an example of Margulis is used to show the existence of an algebraic group G with G=G' such that there exists a Zariski-dense discrete subgroup without any semisimple element.
We introduce a method of constructing the virtual cycle of any scheme associated with a tangent-obstruction complex. We apply this method to constructing the virtual moduli cycle of the moduli of stable maps from n-pointed genus g curves to any smooth projective variety. As an application, we give an algebraic definition of GW-invariants for any smooth projective variety.
We construct a birational invariant for certain algebraic group actions. We use this invariant to classify linear representations of finite abelian groups up to birational equivalence, thus answering, in a special case, a question of E. B. Vinberg and giving a family of counterexamples to a related conjecture of P. I. Katsylo. We also give a new proof of a theorem of M. Lorenz on birational equivalence of quantum tori (in a slightly expanded form) by applying our invariant in the setting of PGL_n-varieties.
Let $G={\rm Spec} A$ be a linearly reductive group and let $w_G\in A^*$ be the invariant integral on $G$. We establish the harmonic analysis on $G$ and we compute $w_G$ when $G=Sl_n, Gl_n, O_n, Sp_{2n}$ by geometric arguments and by means of the Fourier transform.
We prove a form of the Weierstrass Preparation Theorem for normal algebraic curves over complete discrete valuation rings. While the more traditional algebraic form of Weierstrass Preparation applies just to the projective line over a base, our version allows more general curves. This result is then used to obtain applications concerning the values of u-invariants, and on the period-index problem for division algebras, over fraction fields of complete two-dimensional rings. Our approach uses patching methods and matrix factorization results that can be viewed as analogs of Cartan's Lemma.
The paper presents a new algorithmic construction of a finite generating set of rational invariants for the rational action of an algebraic group on the affine space. The construction provides an algebraic counterpart of the moving frame method in differential geometry. The generating set of rational invariants appears as the coefficients of a Groebner basis, reduction with respect to which allows to express a rational invariant in terms of the generators. The replacement invariants, introduced in the paper, are tuples of algebraic functions of the rational invariants. Any invariant, whether r…
We study the Horn problem in the context of algebraic codes on a smooth projective curve defined over a finite field, reducing the problem to the representation theory of the special linear group $SL(2,F_q)$. We characterize the coefficients that appear in the Kronecker product of symmetric functions in terms of Gromov-Witten invariants of the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane. In addition we classify all the algebraic codes defined over the normal rational curve providing an algorithm to compute set of generators of the ideal associated to any algebraic code constructed on the NRC over an…
We give algebraic characterizations of the properties of autonomy and of controllability of behaviours of spatially invariant dynamical systems, consisting of distributional solutions, that are periodic in the spatial variables, to a system pf partial differential equations corresponding to a polynomial matrix M in (C[ξ_1,...,ξ_d, τ])^{m \times n}.
To any Hamiltonian action of a reductive algebraic group $G$ on a smooth irreducible symplectic variety $X$ we associate certain combinatorial invariants: Cartan space, Weyl group, weight and root lattices. For cotangent bundles our invariants essentially coincide with those arising in the theory of equivarant embeddings. Using our approach we establish some properties of the latter invariants.
The first part of this paper is a refinement of Winkelmann's work on invariant rings and quotients of algebraic groups actions on affine varieties, where we take a more geometric point of view. We show that the (algebraic) quotient $X/\!/\!G$ given by the possibly not finitely generated ring of invariants is "almost" an algebraic variety, and that the quotient morphism $π\colon X \to X/\!/\! G$ has a number of nice properties. One of the main difficulties comes from the fact that the quotient morphism is not necessarily surjective. These general results are then refined for actions of the addi…
It is an observation of Kontsevich and Soibelman that generating series that produce certain (generalized) Donaldson Thomas invariants are secretly algebraic functions over the rationals. From a physical perspective this observation arises naturally for DT invariants that appear as BPS indices in theories of class S[A]: explicit algebraic equations (that completely determine these series) can be derived using (degenerate) spectral networks. In this paper, we conjecture an algebraic equation associated to DT invariants for the Kronecker 3-quiver with dimension vectors (3n,2n), n>0 in the non-tr…
Li-Zinger's hyperplane theorem states that the genus one GW-invariants of the quintic threefold is the sum of its reduced genus one GW-invariants and 1/12 multiplies of its genus zero GW-invariants. We apply the Guffin-Sharpe-Witten's theory (GSW theory) to give an algebro-geometric proof of the hyperplane theorem, including separation of contributions and computation of 1/12.
We give a construction of algebraic differential characters, receiving classes of algebraic bundles with connection, lifitng the Chern-Simons invariants defined with S. Bloch, the classes in the Chow group and the analytic secondary invariants if the variety is defined over the field of complex numbers.
The relevance of the algebraic entropy in the study of birational discrete time dynamical systems highlights the need to relate it to other characteristics of these systems. In this letter, two complementary proofs are given that the foliation of the space by invariant curves implies that the algebraic entropy is zero.
