Let $X$ be an irreducible algebraic variety over $\mathbb{C}$, endowed with an algebraic foliation ${\cal{F}}$. In this paper, we introduce the notion of minimal invariant variety $V({\cal{F}},Y)$ with respect to $({\cal{F}},Y)$, where $Y$ is a subvariety of $X$. If $Y=\{x\}$ is a smooth point where the foliation is regular, its minimal invariant variety is simply the Zariski closure of the leaf passing through $x$. First we prove that for very generic $x$, the varieties $V({\cal{F}},x)$ have the same dimension $p$. Second we generalize a result due to X. Gomez-Mont. More precisely, we prove the existence of a dominant rational map $F:X\to Z$, where $Z$ has dimension $(n-p)$, such that for every very generic $x$, the Zariski closure of $F^{-1}(F(x))$ is one and only one minimal invariant variety of a point. We end up with an example illustrating both results.
In this paper we extend to the singular setting the theory of Fano foliations developed in our previous paper. A Q-Fano foliation on a complex projective variety X is a foliation F whose anti-canonical class is an ample Q-Cartier divisor. In the spirit of Kobayashi-Ochiai Theorem, we prove that under some conditions the index i of a Q-Fano foliation is bounded by the rank r of F, and classify the cases in which i=r. Next we consider Q-Fano foliations F for which i=r-1. These are called del Pezzo foliations. We classify codimension 1 del Pezzo foliations on mildly singular varieties.
Level $m$-stratifications on PEL Shimura varieties are defined and studied by Wedhorn using BT-$m$s with PEL structure, and then by Vasiu for general Hodge type Shimura varieties using Shimura $F$-crystals. The theory of foliations is established by Oort for Siegel modular varieties, and by Mantovan for PEL Shimura varieties. It plays an important role in Hamacher's work to compute the dimension of Newton strata of PEL Shimura varieties. We study level $m$ stratifications on good reductions at $p>2$ of Shimura varieties of Hodge type by constructing certain torsors together with equivariant mo…
This paper is a continuation of [G-dS1]. We study foliations of two types on Shimura varieties $S$ in characteristic $p$. The first, which we call "tautological foliations", are defined on Hilbert modular varieties, and lift to characteristic $0$. The second, the "$V$-foliations", are defined on unitary Shimura varieties in characteristic $p$ only, and generalize the foliations studied by us before, when the CM field in question was quadratic imaginary. We determine when these foliations are $p$-closed, and the locus where they are smooth. Where not smooth, we construct a "successive blow up" …
When $p$ is inert in the quadratic imaginary field $E$ and $m<n$, unitary Shimura varieties of signature $(n,m)$ and a hyperspecial level subgroup at $p$, carry a natural foliation of height 1 and rank $m^2$ in the tangent bundle of their special fiber $S$. We study this foliation and show that it acquires singularities at deep Ekedahl-Oort strata, but these singularities are resolved if we pass to a natural smooth moduli problem $S^\sharp$, a successive blow-up of $S$. Over the ($μ$-)ordinary locus we relate the foliation to Moonen's generalized Serre-Tate coordinates. We study the quotient o…
Consider all moduli points corresponding with polarized abelian varieties in characteristic p such that the associated quasi-polarized p-divisible group is geometrically isomorphic with a given one. This defines a subset C of the moduli space. We show that C is closed in the corresponding open Newton polygon stratum. In this way the stratum is the disjoint union of such "central leaves". Under local-local isogenies we consider the orbit of one point: we obtain a second type of leaves. Every stratum, up to a finite map, is the product of one of its central leaves and one of its isogeny leaves. …
The aim of this paper is to study codimension one foliations on rational homogeneous spaces, with a focus on the moduli space of foliations of low degree on Grassmannians and cominuscule spaces. Using equivariant techniques, we show that codimension one degree zero foliations on (ordinary, orthogonal, symplectic) Grassmannians of lines, some spinor varieties, some Lagrangian Grassmannians, the Cayley plane (an $E_6$-variety) and the Freudenthal variety (an $E_7$-variety) are identified with restrictions of foliations on the ambient projective space. We also provide some evidence that such resu…
We prove that a generic holomorphic foliation on a weighted projective plane has no algebraic solutions when the degree is big enough. We also prove an analogous result for foliations on Hirzebruch surfaces.
Let $\mathcal F(r, d)$ denote the moduli space of algebraic foliations of codimension one and degree $d$ in complex proyective space of dimension $r$. We show that $\mathcal F(r, d)$ may be represented as a certain linear section of a variety of complexes. From this fact we obtain information on the irreducible components of $\mathcal F(r, d)$.
We investigate the notion of the $p$-divisor for foliations on a smooth algebraic surface defined over a field of positive characteristic $p$ and we study some of their properties. We present a structure theorem for the $p$-divisor of foliations in the projective plane and the Hirzebruch surfaces where we show that, under certain conditions, such $p$-divisors are reduced.
Given a variety defined over a field of characteristic zero and an algebraically integrable foliation of corank less than or equal to two, we show the existence of a categorical quotient, defined on the non-empty open set of stable points, through which every invariant morphism factors uniquely.
We establish a correspondence between simplicial fans, not necessarily rational, and certain foliated compact complex manifolds called LVMB-manifolds. In the rational case, Meersseman and Verjovsky have shown that the leaf space is the usual toric variety. We compute the basic Betti numbers of the foliation for shellable fans. When the fan is in particular polytopal, we prove that the basic cohomology of the foliation is generated in degree two. We give evidence that the rich interplay between convex and algebraic geometries embodied by toric varieties carries over to our nonrational construct…
Let X be a projective manifold containing a quasi-line l. An important difference between quasi-lines and lines in the projective space is that in general there is more than one quasi-line passing through two given general points. In this paper we use this feature to construct an algebraic foliation associated to a family of quasi-lines. We prove that if the singular locus of this foliation is not too large, it induces a rational fibration on X that maps the general leaf of the foliation onto a quasi-line in a rational variety.
In this work we shall present a survey on problems and results on singular holomorphic foliations and Pfaff systems on complex manifolds assuming that these objects possess invariant analytic varieties. We will focus on recent results which have been motivated by classical works of Darboux, Poincaré and Painlevé on the problem of algebraic integration of singular polynomial differential equations. We present results on Poincaré and Painlevé problem of bounding the degree and the genus of analytic varieties invariant by holomorphic foliations and Pfaff systems. We shall discuss the general idea…
Given a semistable fibration $f\colon X\to B$ we introduce a correspondence between foliations $\mathcal{F}$ on $X$ and local systems $\mathbb{L}$ on $B$. Building up on this correspondence we find conditions that give maximal rationally connected fibrations in terms of data on the foliation. We prove the Castelnuovo-de Franchis theorem in the case of $p$-forms and we apply it to show when, under some natural conditions, a line subbundle of the sheaf of $p$-forms induces the Iitaka fibration.

This work concerns the problem of relating characteristic numbers of one-dimensional holomorphic foliations of P^n to those of algebraic varieties invariant by them. More precisely: if M is a connected complex manifold, a one-dimensional holomorphic foliation F of M is a morphism Φ:L -> TM where L is a holomorphic line bundle on M. The singular set of F is the analytic subvariety sing(F) = {p : Φ(p)=0} and the leaves of F are the leaves of the nonsingular foliation induced by F on M-sing(F). If M is P^n then, since line bundles over P^n are classified by the Chern class c_1(L) in H^2(P^n,Z) = …
It is known after Jouanolou that a general holomorphic foliation of degree $\geq2$ in projective space has no algebraic leaf. We give formulas for the degrees of the subvarieties of the parameter space of one-dimensional foliations that correspond to foliations endowed with some invariant subvariety of degree 1 or 2 and dimension $\geq1$.
We show that an everywhere regular foliation $\mathcal F$ with compact canonically polarized leaves on a quasi-projective manifold $X$ has isotrivial family of leaves when the orbifold base of this family is special. By a recent work of Berndtsson, Paun and Wang, the same proof works in the case where the leaves have trivial canonical bundle. The specialness condition means that the $p$-th exterior power of the logarithmic extension of its conormal bundle does not contain any rank-one subsheaf of maximal Kodaira dimension $p$, for any $p>0$. This condition is satisfied, for example, in the ver…
We study local G-shtukas with level structure over a base scheme whose Newton polygons are constant on the base. We show that after a finite base change and after passing to an étale covering, such a local G-shtuka is isogenous to a completely slope divisible one, generalizing corresponding results for p-divisible groups by Oort and Zink. As an application we establish a product structure up to finite morphism on the closed Newton stratum of the universal deformation of a local G-shtuka, similarly to Oort's foliations for p-divisible groups and abelian varieties. This also yields bounds on the…
We show that the isolated invariant branches globalize to algebraic curves, when we consider weak toric type complex hyperbolic foliations on projective toric ambient surfaces. To do it, we pass through a characterization of weak toric type foliations in terms of "non-degeneracy" conditions, associated to Newton polygons. We also give a description of the relationship between invariant algebraic curves and isolated invariant branches, valid for the case of toric type, by means of the following dichotomy. Either there is a rational first integral and there are no isolated invariant branches or …
Given a reflexive sheaf on a mildly singular projective variety, we prove a flatness criterion under certain stability conditions. This implies the algebraicity of leaves for sufficiently stable foliations with numerically trivial canonical bundle such that the second Chern class does not vanish. Combined with the recent work of Druel and Greb-Guenancia-Kebekus this establishes the Beauville-Bogomolov decomposition for minimal models with trivial canonical class.
Non-dicritical codimension one foliations on projective spaces of dimension four or higher always have an invariant algebraic hypersurface. The proof relies on a strengthening of a result by Rossi on the algebraization/continuation of analytic subvarieties of projective spaces.
In this paper we study certain homogeneous spaces, which we call generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties. The main aim is to characterise the canonical divisor of generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties in terms of group representations. Affine Stiefel algebraic varieties and in particular $S^{n}$ are two special cases of the generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties.
We study Minkowski sums and Hadamard products of algebraic varieties. Specifically we explore when these are varieties and examine their properties in terms of those of the original varieties.
We give sufficient cohomological criteria for the classes of given varieties over a field $k$ to be algebraically independent in the Grothendieck ring of varieties over $k$ and construct some examples.
We use a family of algebraic foliations given by A. Lins Neto to provide new evidences to a conjecture, related to the Harbourne-Hirschowitz's one and implying the Nagata's conjecture, which concerns the structure of the Mori cone of blow-ups of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at very general points.
This is the first in a series of papers about foliations in derived geometry. After introducing derived foliations on arbitrary derived stacks, we concentrate on quasi-smooth and rigid derived foliations on smooth complex algebraic varieties and on their associated formal and analytic versions. Their truncations are classical singular foliations. We prove that a quasi-smooth rigid derived foliation on a smooth complex variety $X$ is formally integrable at any point, and, if we suppose that its singular locus has codimension $\geq 2$, then the truncation of its analytification is a locally inte…
We show that every affine or projective algebraic variety defined over the field of real or complex numbers is homeomorphic to a variety defined over the field of algebraic numbers. We construct such a homeomorphism by choosing a small deformation of the coefficients of the original equations. This method is based on the properties of Zariski equisingular families of varieties. Moreover we construct an algorithm, that, given a system of equations defining a variety $V$, produces a system of equations with algebraic coefficients of a variety homeomorphic to $V$
This is the second of series of papers on the study of foliations in the setting of derived algebraic geometry based on the central notion of derived foliation. We introduce sheaf-like coefficients for derived foliations, called quasi-coherent crystals, and construct a certain sheaf of dg-algebras of differential operators along a given derived foliation, with the property that quasi-coherent crystals can be interpreted as modules over this sheaf of differential operators. We use this interpretation in order to introduce the notion of good filtrations on quasi-coherent crystals, and define the…
We develop a moduli theory of algebraic varieties and pairs of non-negative Kodaira dimension. We define stable minimal models and construct their projective coarse moduli spaces under certain natural conditions. This can be applied to a wide range of moduli problems in algebraic geometry.
We address the question of finding algebraic properties that are respectively equivalent, for a morphism between algebraic varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, to be an homeomorphism for the Zariski topology and for a strong topology that we introduce. Our answers involve a study of seminormalization and saturation for morphisms between algebraic varieties, together with an interpretation in terms of continuous rational functions on the closed points of an algebraic variety. The continuity refers to the strong topology which is the usual Euclidean topology in th…
In this paper, we establish the following version at infinity of Whitney's theorem [6, 7]: Geometric and algebraic tangent cones at infinity of complex algebraic varieties coincide. The proof of this fact is based on a geometric characterization of geometric tangent cones at infinity and using the global Łojasiewicz inequality with explicit exponents for complex algebraic varieties. We also show that tangent cones at infinity of complex algebraic varieties can be computed using Gröbner bases.
