This is the second of series of papers on the study of foliations in the setting of derived algebraic geometry based on the central notion of derived foliation. We introduce sheaf-like coefficients for derived foliations, called quasi-coherent crystals, and construct a certain sheaf of dg-algebras of differential operators along a given derived foliation, with the property that quasi-coherent crystals can be interpreted as modules over this sheaf of differential operators. We use this interpretation in order to introduce the notion of good filtrations on quasi-coherent crystals, and define the notion of characteristic cycle. Finally, we prove a Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch (GRR) formula expressing that formation of characteristic cycles is compatible with push-forwards along proper and quasi-smooth morphisms. Several examples and applications are deduced from this, e.g. a GRR formula for D-modules on possibly singular schemes, and a foliated index formula for weakly Fredholm operators.
For a $G$-scheme $X$ with a given equivariant perfect obstruction theory, we prove a virtual equivariant Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula, this is an extension of a result of Fantechi-Göttsche to the equivariant context. We also prove a virtual non-abelian localization theorem for schemes over $\mathbb{C}$ with proper actions.
We prove that, for smooth quasi-projective varieties over a field, the $K$-theory $K(X)$ of vector bundles is the universal cohomology theory where $c_1(L\otimes \bar L)=c_1(L)+c_1(\bar L)-c_1(L)c_1(\bar L)$. Then, we show that Grothendieck's Riemann-Roch theorem is a direct consequence of this universal property, as well as the universal property of the graded $K$-theory $GK^\bullet (X)\otimes \mathbb{Q}$.
The goal of this series of papers is to give a new non-commutative approach to problems about the density of reductions such as the conjecture of Joshi-Rajan, and the generalization of the conjecture of Serre. In this paper, we prove integral Grothendieck Riemann-Roch which was proved by Papas in the case ch$(k)=0$. As a corollary we prove an integral analogue of Kontsevich's comparison theorem, and we show that if a smooth projective variety $X$ has a full exceptional collection then there is an explicit formula of the motive of $X$ up to bounded torsion.
We define bivariant algebraic K-theory and bivariant derived Chow on the homotopy category of derived schemes over a smooth base. The orientation on the latter corresponds to virtual Gysin homomorphisms. We then provide a morphism between these two bivariant theories and compare the two orientations. This comparison then yields a homological and cohomological Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula for virtual classes.
We give a short and "classical" proof of Borcherds' theorem that the moduli space of Enriques surfaces is quasi-affine. The use of the Borcherds' product is replaced in our proof by an application of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem.
In this paper we prove a categorification of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem. Our result implies in particular a Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for Toën and Vezzosi's secondary Chern character. As a main application, we establish a comparison between the Toën-Vezzosi Chern character and the classical Chern character, and show that the categorified Chern character recovers the classical de Rham realization.
We show that, in characteristic zero, the obvious integral version of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula obtained by clearing the denominators of the Todd and Chern characters is true (without having to divide the Chow groups by their torsion subgroups). The proof introduces an alternative to Grothendieck's strategy: we use resolution of singularities and the weak factorization theorem for birational maps.
We produce a Grothendieck transformation from bivariant operational $K$-theory to Chow, with a Riemann-Roch formula that generalizes classical Grothendieck-Verdier-Riemann-Roch. We also produce Grothendieck transformations and Riemann-Roch formulas that generalize the classical Adams-Riemann-Roch and equivariant localization theorems. As applications, we exhibit a projective toric variety $X$ whose equivariant $K$-theory of vector bundles does not surject onto its ordinary $K$-theory, and describe the operational $K$-theory of spherical varieties in terms of fixed-point data. In an appendix, V…
The classical arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem can be applied only to projective morphisms that are smooth over the complex numbers. In this paper we generalize the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem to the case of general projective morphisms between regular arithmetic varieties. To this end we rely on the theory of generalized analytic torsion developed by the authors.
We prove a Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch type formula for global matrix factorizations. This is established by an explicit realization of the abstract Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch type formula of Shklarov. We also show a Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch type theorem.
The purpose of this paper is to prove an equivariant Riemann-Roch theorem for schemes or algebraic spaces with an action of a linear algebraic group $G$. For a $G$-space $X$, this theorem gives an isomorphism between a completion of the equivariant Grothendieck group and a completion of equivariant equivariant Chow groups. The key to proving this isomorphism is a geometric description of completions of the equivariant Grothendieck group. Besides Riemann-Roch, this result has some purely $K$-theoretic applications. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Köck (in the case of regular schemes) an…
We use the formalism of traces in higher categories to prove a common generalization of the holomorphic Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula and the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem. The proof is quite different from the original one proposed by Grothendieck et al.: it relies on the interplay between self dualities of quasi- and ind- coherent sheaves on $X$ and formal deformation theory of Gaitsgory-Rozenblyum. In particular, we give a description of the Todd class in terms of the difference of two formal group structures on the derived loop scheme $\mathcal LX$. The equivariant case is reduced to…
We study the singular Bott-Chern classes introduced by Bismut, Gillet and Soule. Singular Bott-Chern classes are the main ingredient to define direct images for closed immersions in arithmetic K-theory. In this paper we give an axiomatic definition of a theory of singular Bott-Chern classes, study their properties, and classify all possible theories of this kind. We identify the theory defined by Bismut, Gillet and Soule as the only one that satisfies the additional condition of being homogeneous. We include a proof of the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for closed immersions that…
Mapping a locally free module to its l-th tensor power gives rise to a natural map from the Grothendieck group of all locally free modules to the Grothendieck group of all locally free representations of the l-th symmetric group. In this paper, we prove some formulas of Riemann-Roch type for the behaviour of this tensor power operation with respect to the push-forward homomorphism associated with a projective morphism between schemes. We furthermore establish analogous formulas for higher K-groups.
In this paper, we formulate axioms of certain graded cohomology theory for which Chern class maps from higher K-theory are defined, following the method of Gillet [Gi1]. We will not include homotopy invariance nor purity in our axioms. It will turn out that the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem and the Riemann-Roch theorem without denominators hold for our higher Chern classes. We will also give two applications of our Riemann-Roch results.
Fulton and MacPherson introduced the notion of bivariant theories and Grothendieck transformations related to Riemann-Roch-theorems. But there are many situations, where such a bivariant theory or a corresponding Grothendieck transformation is only partially known: characteristic classes of singular spaces (e.g. Stiefel-Whitney or Chern classes), cohomology operations (e.g. singular Adams Riemann-Roch and Steenrod operations for Chow groups) or equivariant theories (e.g. Lefschetz Riemann-Roch). We introduce in this paper a simpler notion of partial (weak) bivariant theories and partial Grothe…
Suppose $\mathcal{S}$ is a smooth, proper, and tame Deligne-Mumford stack. Toën's Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem requires correction terms, involving components of the inertia stack, to the standard formula for schemes. We give a brief overview of Toën's Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem, and explicitly compute the correction terms in the case of an orbifold surface with stabilizers of types ADE.
We establish a Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch type theorem and Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch type theorem for matrix factorizations on quotient Deligne-Mumford stacks. For this we first construct a Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg type isomorphism explicit enough to yield a categorical Chern character formula. We next find an expression of the canonical pairing of Shklyarov under the isomorphism.
The goal of this paper is to prove Riemann-Roch type theorems for Deligne-Mumford algebraic stacks. To this end, we introduce a "cohomology with coefficients in representations" and a Chern character, and we prove a Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for the Riemann-Roch transformation it defines. As a corollary we obtain an Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula for the Euler characteristic of a coherent sheaf, and some formulas for the different topological Euler characteristics of complex algebraic stacks.
We propose an algebraic Riemann-Roch formula for moving flat bundles on contant families in characteristic zero with values in the ring of algebraic differential characters. This formula lifts Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula in the Chow groups and Bismut-Lott formula in the odd dimensional Betti cohomology with $\C/\Z$ coefficients over the field of complex numbers.
We construct a functor, from the category of schemes to the category of graded rings, that is an initial object for having a theory of Chern classes with an additive first Chern class. For any scheme $X$, the graded ring that our functor associates to $X$ is related to the associated graded ring of the $γ$-filtration on the Grothendieck ring of finite rank locally free sheaves on $X$ via a Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch type theorem.
This is the first article in an upcoming series of papers. They have arisen through an attempt to answer open questions of Deligne proposed in "Le determinant de la cohomologie", Contemp. Mathematics 67 (1987). It amounts to functorial and metrized versions of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem, as well as a Lefschetz-Riemann-Roch formula in the sense of Thomason, cf. "Lefschetz-Riemann-Roch theorem and coherent trace formula" Ann. Sci. Ec. Norm. Sup. 18 (1985), Theorem 3.5. In this article we treat various preliminary results on virtual categories which are the categories where the Deligne…
For a proper scheme X with a fixed 1-perfect obstruction theory, we define virtual versions of holomorphic Euler characteristic, chi y-genus, and elliptic genus; they are deformation invariant, and extend the usual definition in the smooth case. We prove virtual versions of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch and Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorems. We show that the virtual chi y-genus is a polynomial, and use this to define a virtual topological Euler characteristic. We prove that the virtual elliptic genus satisfies a Jacobi modularity property; we state and prove a localization theorem in the toric …
We introduce twisted permutation-equivariant GW-invariants, and compute them in terms of untwisted ones. The computation is based on Grothendieck-like RR formula corresponding to Adams' operations from K-theory to itself, and the result can be understood as a "quantum" version of such Adams-RR. As in the case of cohomological quantum RR theorem [3], the result is applied to express the invariants of bundle and super-bundle spaces in terms of those of the base. The bonus feature of permutation-equivariant K-theory is that the twisting classes can be understood as the simpler kappa-classes of Ka…
If V is a bundle of Tate vector spaces over a base B, its determinantal gerbe has a class C_1(V) in the second cohomology group of the sheaf of invertible functions which can be seen as the Deligne cohomology H^3(B, Z(2)). An example of such a "Tate bundle" can be obtained from a finite rank vector bundle E on the product of B and a punctured formal disk. Our main result identifies the corresponding C_1(V) with the cohomological direct image of ch_2(E), the second Chern character of E. It can be seen as a "local" version of the Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck theorem for a family of curves. This the…
In this paper, we prove that the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula in Deligne cohomology computing the determinant of the cohomology of a holomorphic vector bundle on the fibers of a proper submersion between abstract complex manifolds is invariant by deformation of the bundle.
Let $G$ be a complex, linear algebraic group acting on an algebraic space $X$. The purpose of this paper is to prove a Riemann-Roch theorem (Theorem 5.3) which gives a description of the completion of the equivariant Grothendieck group $G_0(G,X)$ at any maximal ideal of the representation ring $R(G) \otimes \C$ in terms of equivariant cycles. The main new technique for proving this theorem is our non-abelian completion theorem (Theorem 4.3) for equivariant $K$-theory. Theorem 4.3 generalizes the classical localization theorems for diagonalizable group actions to arbitrary groups.
This book discusses the construction of triangulated categories of mixed motives over a noetherian scheme of finite dimension, extending Voevodsky's definition of motives over a field. In particular, it is shown that motives with rational coefficients satisfy the formalism of the six operations of Grothendieck. This is achieved by studying descent properties of motives, as well as by comparing different presentations of these categories, following and extending insights and constructions of Deligne, Beilinson, Bloch, Thomason, Gabber, Levine, Morel, Voevodsky, Ayoub, Spitzweck, Röndigs, Østvær…
Given a holomorphic vector bundle $E:EX X$ over a compact Kähler manifold, one introduces twisted GW-invariants of $X$ replacing virtual fundamental cycles of moduli spaces of stable maps $f: Σ\to X$ by their cap-product with a chosen multiplicative characteristic class of $H^0(Σ, f^* E) - H^1(Σ, f^*E)$. Using the formalism of quantized quadratic hamiltonians, we express the descendent potential for the twisted theory in terms of that for $X$. The result (Theorem 1) is a consequence of Mumford's Riemann -- Roch -- Grothendieck formula applied to the universal stable map. When $E$ is concave, a…
By using the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem we derive cycle relations modulo algebraic equivalence in the Jacobian of a curve. The relations generalize the relations found by Colombo and van Geemen and are analogous to but simpler than the relations recently found by Herbaut. In an appendix due to Zagier it is shown that these sets of relations are equivalent.
We prove an Atiyah-Segal isomorphism for the higher $K$-theory of coherent sheaves on quotient Deligne-Mumford stacks over $\C$. As an application, we prove the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for such stacks. This theorem establishes an isomorphism between the higher $K$-theory of coherent sheaves on a Deligne-Mumford stack and the higher Chow groups of its inertia stack. Furthermore, this isomorphism is covariant for proper maps between Deligne-Mumford stacks.
Let K_0(V/X) be the relative Grothendieck group of varieties over X in obj(V), with V the category of (quasi-projective) algebraic (resp. compact complex analytic) varieties over a base field k. Then we constructed the motivic Hirzebruch class transformation in the algebraic context for k of characteristic zero and in the compact complex analytic context. It unifies the well-known three characteristic class transformations of singular varieties: MacPherson's Chern class, Baum-Fulton-MacPherson's Todd class and the L-class of Goresky-MacPherson and Cappell-Shaneson. In this paper we construct a…
The theory of Lambda-rings, in the sense of Grothendieck's Riemann-Roch theory, is an enrichment of the theory of commutative rings. In the same way, we can enrich usual algebraic geometry over the ring Z of integers to produce Lambda-algebraic geometry. We show that Lambda-algebraic geometry is in a precise sense an algebraic geometry over a deeper base than Z and that it has many properties predicted for algebraic geometry over the mythical field with one element. Moreover, it does this is a way that is both formally robust and closely related to active areas in arithmetic algebraic geometry…
It is well known that there is a bijective correspondence between metric ribbon graphs and compact Riemann surfaces with meromorphic Strebel differentials. In this article, it is proved that Grothendieck's correspondence between dessins d'enfants and Belyi morphisms is a special case of this correspondence. For a metric ribbon graph with edge length 1, an algebraic curve over $\bar Q$ and a Strebel differential on it is constructed. It is also shown that the critical trajectories of the measured foliation that is determined by the Strebel differential recover the original metric ribbon graph. …
We combine the theory of traces in homotopical algebra with sheaf theory in derived algebraic geometry to deduce general fixed point and character formulas. The formalism of dimension (or Hochschild homology) of a dualizable object in the context of higher algebra provides a unifying framework for classical notions such as Euler characteristics, Chern characters, and characters of group representations. Moreover, the simple functoriality properties of dimensions clarify celebrated identities and extend them to new contexts. We observe that it is advantageous to calculate dimensions, traces and…
