We construct a birational invariant for certain algebraic group actions. We use this invariant to classify linear representations of finite abelian groups up to birational equivalence, thus answering, in a special case, a question of E. B. Vinberg and giving a family of counterexamples to a related conjecture of P. I. Katsylo. We also give a new proof of a theorem of M. Lorenz on birational equivalence of quantum tori (in a slightly expanded form) by applying our invariant in the setting of PGL_n-varieties.
We introduce a variant of the birational symbols group of Kontsevich, Pestun, and the second author, and use this to define birational invariants of algebraic orbifolds.
A priori, the set of birational transformations of an algebraic variety is just a group. We survey the possible algebraic structures that we may add to it, using in particular parametrised family of birational transformations.
This is a report on some of the main developments in birational geometry in the last few years focusing on the minimal model program, Fano varieties, singularities and related topics, in characteristic zero.
According to the classical theorem, every irreducible algebraic variety endowed with a nontrivial rational action of a connected linear algebraic group is birationally isomorphic to a product of another algebraic variety and ${\bf P}^s$ with positive $s$. We show that the classical proof of this theorem actually works only in characteristic $0$ and we give a characteristic free proof of it. To this end we prove and use a characterization of connected linear algebraic groups $G$ with the property that every rational action of $G$ on an irreducible algebraic variety is birationally equivalent to…
A criterion for the existence of a birational embedding of an algebraic curve into a projective plane with two Galois points is presented. Several novel examples of plane curves with two inner Galois points as an application are described.
Let X be a smooth projective complex variety, of dimension 3, whose Hodge numbers h^{3,0}(X), h^{1,0}(X) both vanish. Let f: X--> X be a birational map that induces an isomorphism on (dense) open subvarieties U,V of X. Then we show that the complex reduced varieties (X \ U), (X \ V) are piecewise isomorphic.
We develop the quadratic technique of proving birational rigidity of Fano-Mori fibre spaces over a higher-dimensional base. As an application, we prove birational rigidity of generic fibrations into Fano double spaces of dimension $M\geqslant 4$ and index one over a rationally connected base of dimension at most $\frac12 (M-2)(M-1)$. An estimate for the codimension of the subset of hypersurfaces of a given degree in the projective space with a positive-dimensional singular set is obtained, which is close to the optimal one.
We prove birational superrigidity of generic Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$, the fibers of which are Fano complete intersections of index 1 and dimension $M$ in ${\mathbb P}^{M+k}$, provided that $M\geq 2k+1$. The proof combines the traditional quadratic techniques of the method of maximal singularities with the linear techniques based on the connectedness principle of Shokurov and Koll\' ar. Certain related results are also considered.
We consider function fields of transcendence degree at least 2 over algebraic closures of finite fields, and describe a functorial way to recover such function fields form their pro-l Galois theory.
This is a survey for the 2015 AMS Summer Institute on Algebraic Geometry about the Frobenius type techniques recently used extensively in positive characteristic algebraic geometry. We first explain the basic ideas through simple versions of the fundamental definitions and statements, and then we survey most of the recent algebraic geometry results obtained using these techniques.

The relevance of the algebraic entropy in the study of birational discrete time dynamical systems highlights the need to relate it to other characteristics of these systems. In this letter, two complementary proofs are given that the foliation of the space by invariant curves implies that the algebraic entropy is zero.
It is proved that on a smooth algebraic variety, fibered into cubic surfaces over the projective line and sufficiently ``twisted'' over the base, there is only one pencil of rational surfaces -- that is, this very pencil of cubics. In particular, this variety is non-rational; moreover, it can not be fibered into rational curves. The proof is obtained by means of the method of maximal singularities.
We give an effective upper bound of |Bir(X)| for the birational automorphism group of an irregular n-fold (with n = 3) of general type in terms of the volume V = V(X) under an ''albanese smoothness and simplicity'' condition. To be precise, |Bir(X)| < d_3 V^{10}. An optimum linear bound |Bir(X)|-1 < (1/3)(42)^3 V is obtained for those 3-folds with non-maximal albanese dimension. For all n > 2, a bound |Bir(X)| < d_n V^{10} is obtained when alb_X is generically finite, alb(X) is smooth and Alb(X) is simple.
We study in this article three birational invariants of projective hyper-Kähler manifolds: the degree of irrationality, the fibering gonality and the fibering genus. We first improve the lower bound in a recent result of Voisin saying that the fibering genus of a Mumford--Tate very general projective hyper-Kähler manifold is bounded from below by a constant depending on its dimension and the second Betti number. We also study the relations between these birational invariants for projective K3 surfaces of Picard number 1 and study the asymptotic behaviors of their degree of irrationality and fi…
This is an expository article, which contributes to the Proceedings of the conference "Groups of Automorphisms in Birational and Affine Geometry", held in Trento in 2012. We propose that (rational) fibrations on the projective space $\p^n$ by (birationally) Abelian hypersurfaces, for an arbitrary $n\ge 2$, provide an obstruction to stable rationality of algebraic varieties. We discuss the evidence for this proposition and derive some (almost straightforward) corollaries from it.
This paper contains some applications of Bridgeland-Douglas stability conditions on triangulated categories, and Joyce's work on counting invariants of semistable objects, to the study of birational geometry. We introduce the notion of motivic Gopakumar-Vafa invariants as counting invariants of D2-branes, and show that they are invariant under birational transformations between Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The result is similar to the fact that birational Calabi-Yau 3-folds have the same betti numbers or Hodge numbers.
In 2011, the first author introduced (relative) Riemann-Zariski spaces corresponding to a morphism of schemes and established their basic properties. In this paper we clarify that theory and extend it to morphisms between algebraic spaces. As an application, a new proof of Nagata's compactification theorem for algebraic spaces is obtained.
I show that the cohomology of the generic points of algebraic complex varieties becomes {\sl stable} birational invariant, when considered `modulo the cohomology of the generic points of the affine spaces'.
Gromov-Witten invariants have been constructed to be deformation invariant, but their behavior under other transformations is subtle. In this note we show that logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants are also invariant under appropriately defined logarithmic modifications.
In this paper, we give a valuation formula for rational top differential forms of function fields in characteristic zero for arbitrary Abhyankar places generalizing the classical valuation at prime divisors. This enables us to define log discrepancies for log pairs for arbitrary Abhyankar places. If the Abhyankar place has dimension greater than zero we restrict rational top differential forms with valuation zero to the residue field of the Abhyankar place, generalizing the classical restriction of a top differential form with a simple pole along a smooth divisor. This opens up the door to gen…
We introduce a simplified version of the Grothendieck group of algebraic varieties and use it to show that birational types specialize in families with mild singularities of the central fiber.
In this paper we will survey some recent developments in the last decade or so on variation of Geometric Invariant Theory and its applications to Birational Geometry such as the weak Factorization Theorems of nonsingular projective varieties and more generally projective varieties with finite quotient singularities. Along the way, we will also mention some progresses on birational geometry of hyperKähler manifolds as well as certain open problems and conjectures.
We classify invariant curves for birational surface maps that are expanding on cohomology. When the expansion is exponential, the arithmetic genus of an invariant curve is at most one. This implies severe constraints on both the type and number of irreducible components of the curve. In the case of an invariant curve with genus equal to one, we show that there is an associated invariant meromorphic two form.
Let $X$ and $Y$ be nonsingular projective varieties over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic. If $X$ and $Y$ are birational, we show their $S$-fundamental group schemes are isomorphic.
Let X and Y be two smooth projective n-dimensional algebraic varieties X and Y over C with trivial canonical line bundles. We use methods of p-adic analysis on algebraic varieties over local number fields to prove that if X and Y are birational, they have the same Betti numbers.
New birational invariants for a projective manifold are defined by using Lawson homology. These invariants can be highly nontrivial even for projective threefolds. Our techniques involve the weak factorization theorem of Wlodarczyk and tools developed by Friedlander, Lawson, Lima-Filho and others. A blowup formula for Lawson homology is given in a separate section. As an application, we show that for each n\geq 5, there is a smooth rational variety X of dimension n such that the Griffiths groups Griff}_p(X) are infinitely generated even modulo torsion for all p with 2\leq p\leq n-3.
We introduce equivariant Burnside groups, new invariants in equivariant birational geometry, generalizing birational symbols groups for actions of finite abelian groups, due to Kontsevich, Pestun, and the second author, and study their properties. We establish a specialization map for the equivariant birational type of a smooth algebraic variety with an action of a finite group.
We study the motivic Grothendieck group of algebraic varieties from the point of view of stable birational geometry. In particular, we obtain a counter-example to a conjecture of M. Kapranov on the rationality of motivic zeta-function.
Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri, and Vafa constructed a real-valued invariant for Calabi--Yau manifolds, which is now called the BCOV torsion. Based on it, a metric-independent invariant, called the BCOV invariant, was constructed by Fang--Lu--Yoshikawa and Eriksson--Freixas i Montplet--Mourougane. The BCOV invariant is conjecturally related to the Gromov--Witten theory via mirror symmetry. Based upon the previous work of the second author, we prove the conjecture that birational Calabi--Yau manifolds have the same BCOV invariant. We also extend the construction of the BCOV invariant to Calabi--Ya…
Let X be an algebraic variety with a generically free action of a connected algebraic group G. Given an automorphism u of G, we will denote by X^u the same variety X with the G-action given by twisted by u. V. L. Popov asked if X and X^u are always G-equivariantly birationally isomorphic. We construct examples to show that this is not the case in general, but we prove that X and X^u are always stably birationally isomorphic, i.e., birationally isomorphic after taking products with an affine space with trivial G-action.
Assuming a particular case of Borisov--Alexeev--Borisov conjecture, we prove that finite subgroups of the automorphism group of a finitely generated field over Q have bounded orders. Further, we investigate which algebraic varieties have groups of birational selfmaps satisfying the Jordan property.
We define a new notion of "b-stability" for a polarised algebraic variety, adapted to the existence problem for Kahler-Einstein metrics on Fano manifolds.
