Fill an n x n matrix with independent complex Gaussians of variance 1/n. As n approaches infinity, the eigenvalues {z_k} converge to a sum of an H^1-noise on the unit disk and an independent H^{1/2}-noise on the unit circle. More precisely, for C^1 functions of suitable growth, the distribution of sum_{k=1}^n (f(z_k)-E f(z_k)) converges to that of a mean-zero Gaussian with variance given by the sum of the squares of the disk H^1 and the circle H^{1/2} norms of f. Moreover, with p_n the characteristic polynomial, log|p_n|- E log|p_n| tends to the planar Gaussian free field conditioned to be harmonic outside the unit disk. Finally, for polynomial test functions f, we prove that the limiting covariance structure is universal for a class of models including Haar distributed unitary matrices.
The circular law asserts that the spectral measure of eigenvalues of rescaled random matrices without symmetry assumption converges to the uniform measure on the unit disk. We prove a local version of this law at any point $z$ away from the unit circle. More precisely, if $ | |z| - 1 | \ge τ$ for arbitrarily small $τ> 0$, the circular law is valid around $z$ up to scale $N^{-1/2+ \e}$ for any $\e > 0$ under the assumption that the distributions of the matrix entries satisfy a uniform subexponential decay condition.
We consider large random matrices $X$ with centered, independent entries which have comparable but not necessarily identical variances. Girko's circular law asserts that the spectrum is supported in a disk and in case of identical variances, the limiting density is uniform. In this special case, the local circular law by Bourgade et. al. [11,12] shows that the empirical density converges even locally on scales slightly above the typical eigenvalue spacing. In the general case, the limiting density is typically inhomogeneous and it is obtained via solving a system of deterministic equations. Ou…
In the first part of this article, we proved a local version of the circular law up to the finest scale $N^{-1/2+ \e}$ for non-Hermitian random matrices at any point $z \in \C$ with $||z| - 1| > c $ for any $c>0$ independent of the size of the matrix. Under the main assumption that the first three moments of the matrix elements match those of a standard Gaussian random variable after proper rescaling, we extend this result to include the edge case $ |z|-1=\oo(1)$. Without the vanishing third moment assumption, we prove that the circular law is valid near the spectral edge $ |z|-1=\oo(1)$ up to…
In the first part of this article series, Bourgade, Yau and the author of this paper proved a local version of the circular law up to the finest scale $N^{-1/2+ \e}$ for non-Hermitian random matrices at any point $z \in \C$ with $||z| - 1| > c $ for any $c>0$ independent of the size of the matrix. In the second part, they extended this result to include the edge case $ |z|-1=\oo(1)$, under the main assumption that the third moments of the matrix elements vanish. (Without the vanishing third moment assumption, they proved that the circular law is valid near the spectral edge $ |z|-1=\oo(1)$ up …
Consider Ginibre's ensemble of $N \times N$ non-Hermitian random matrices in which all entries are independent complex Gaussians of mean zero and variance $\frac{1}{N}$. As $N \uparrow \infty$ the normalized counting measure of the eigenvalues converges to the uniform measure on the unit disk in the complex plane. In this note we describe fluctuations about this {\em Circular Law}. First we obtain finite $N$ formulas for the covariance of certain linear statistics of the eigenvalues. Asymptotics of these objects coupled with a theorem of Costin and Lebowitz then result in central limit theorem…
Let $\mathbf X=(X_{jk})_{j,k=1}^n$ denote a Hermitian random matrix with entries $X_{jk}$, which are independent for $1\le j\le k\le n$. We consider the rate of convergence of the empirical spectral distribution function of the matrix $\mathbf W=\frac1{\sqrt n}\mathbf X$ to the semi-circular law assuming that $\mathbf E X_{jk}=0$, $\mathbf E X_{jk}^2=1$ and uniformly bounded eight moments. By means of a recursion argument it is shown that the Kolmogorov distance between the empirical spectral distribution of the Wigner matrix $\mathbf W$ and the semi--circular law is of order $O(n^{-1}\log^{5}…
We prove the circular law for a class of non-Hermitian random block band matrices with genuinely sublinear bandwidth. Namely, we show there exists $τ\in (0,1)$ so that if the bandwidth of the matrix $X$ is at least $n^{1-τ}$ and the nonzero entries are iid random variables with mean zero and slightly more than four finite moments, then the limiting empirical eigenvalue distribution of $X$, when properly normalized, converges in probability to the uniform distribution on the unit disk in the complex plane. The key technical result is a least singular value bound for shifted random band block ma…
We prove rates of convergence for the circular law for the complex Ginibre ensemble. Specifically, we bound the expected $L_p$-Wasserstein distance between the empirical spectral measure of the normalized complex Ginibre ensemble and the uniform measure on the unit disc, both in expectation and almost surely. For $1 \le p \le 2$, the bounds are of the order $n^{-1/4}$, up to logarithmic factors.
These expository notes are centered around the circular law theorem, which states that the empirical spectral distribution of a nxn random matrix with i.i.d. entries of variance 1/n tends to the uniform law on the unit disc of the complex plane as the dimension $n$ tends to infinity. This phenomenon is the non-Hermitian counterpart of the semi circular limit for Wigner random Hermitian matrices, and the quarter circular limit for Marchenko-Pastur random covariance matrices. We present a proof in a Gaussian case, due to Silverstein, based on a formula by Ginibre, and a proof of the universal ca…
We study the Circular and Jacobi $β$-Ensembles and prove Gaussian fluctuations for the number of points in one or more intervals in the macroscopic scaling limit.
We consider the problem of determining the limiting spectral distribution for random matrices whose row distributions are permitted to have limited dependence. We assume mild moment conditions and give an extension of the Marčenko-Pastur theorem for this context. The main new feature here are geometric conditions on the distributions which allow us to extend the circular law to this setting.
The aim of this note is to investigate the Kolmogorov distance of the Circular Law to the empirical spectral distribution of non-Hermitian random matrices with independent entries. The optimal rate of convergence is determined by the Ginibre ensemble and is given by $n^{-1/2}$. A smoothing inequality for complex measures that quantitatively relates the uniform Kolmogorov-like distance to the concentration of logarithmic potentials is shown. Combining it with results from Local Circular Laws, we apply it to prove nearly optimal rate of convergence to the Circular Law in Kolmogorov distance. Fur…
The famous \emph{circular law} asserts that if $M_n$ is an $n \times n$ matrix with iid complex entries of mean zero and unit variance, then the empirical spectral distribution (ESD) of the normalized matrix $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} M_n$ converges almost surely to the uniform distribution on the unit disk $\{z \in \C: |z| \leq 1 \}$. After a long sequence of partial results that verified this law under additional assumptions on the distribution of the entries, the full circular law was recently established in \cite{TVcir2}. In this survey we describe some of the key ingredients used in the establis…
The circular law asserts that the empirical distribution of eigenvalues of appropriately normalized $n\times n$ matrix with i.i.d. entries converges to the uniform measure on the unit disc as the dimension $n$ grows to infinity. Consider an $n\times n$ matrix $A_n=(δ_{ij}^{(n)}ξ_{ij}^{(n)})$, where $ξ_{ij}^{(n)}$ are copies of a real random variable of unit variance, variables $δ_{ij}^{(n)}$ are Bernoulli ($0/1$) with ${\mathbb P}\{δ_{ij}^{(n)}=1\}=p_n$, and $δ_{ij}^{(n)}$ and $ξ_{ij}^{(n)}$, $i,j\in[n]$, are jointly independent. In order for the circular law to hold for the sequence $\big(\fr…
Let $P_n^1,\dots, P_n^d$ be $n\times n$ permutation matrices drawn independently and uniformly at random, and set $S_n^d:=\sum_{\ell=1}^d P_n^\ell$. We show that if $\log^{12}n/(\log \log n)^{4} \le d=O(n)$, then the empirical spectral distribution of $S_n^d/\sqrt{d}$ converges weakly to the circular law in probability as $n \to \infty$.
Consider the empirical spectral distribution of complex random $n\times n$ matrix whose entries are independent and identically distributed random variables with mean zero and variance $1/n$. In this paper, via applying potential theory in the complex plane and analyzing extreme singular values, we prove that this distribution converges, with probability one, to the uniform distribution over the unit disk in the complex plane, i.e. the well known circular law, under the finite fourth moment assumption on matrix elements.
We investigate the Wasserstein distance between the empirical spectral distribution of non-Hermitian random matrices and the Circular Law. For general entry distributions, we obtain a nearly optimal rate of convergence in 1-Wasserstein distance of order $n^{-1/2+ε}$ and we prove that the optimal rate $n^{-1/2}$ is attained by Ginibre matrices. This shows that the expected transport cost of complex eigenvalues to the uniform measure on the unit disk decays faster compared to that of i.i.d. points, which is known to include a logarithmic factor.
Let $X$ be a matrix sampled uniformly from the set of doubly stochastic matrices of size $n\times n$. We show that the empirical spectral distribution of the normalized matrix $\sqrt{n}(X-{\mathbf {E}}X)$ converges almost surely to the circular law. This confirms a conjecture of Chatterjee, Diaconis and Sly.
We explore the validity of the circular law for random matrices with non i.i.d. entries. Let A be a random n \times n real matrix having as a random vector in R^{n^2} a log-concave isotropic unconditional law. In particular, the entries are uncorellated and have a symmetric law of zero mean and unit variance. This allows for some dependence and non equidistribution among the entries, while keeping the special case of i.i.d. standard Gaussian entries. Our main result states that as n goes to infinity, the empirical spectral distribution of n^{-1/2}A tends to the uniform law on the unit disc of …
An exchangeable random matrix is a random matrix with distribution invariant under any permutation of the entries. For such random matrices, we show, as the dimension tends to infinity, that the empirical spectral distribution tends to the uniform law on the unit disc. This is an instance of the universality phenomenon known as the circular law, for a model of random matrices with dependent entries, rows, and columns. It is also a non-Hermitian counterpart of a result of Chatterjee on the semi-circular law for random Hermitian matrices with exchangeable entries. The proof relies in particular …
It is well known that the spectral measure of eigenvalues of a rescaled square non-Hermitian random matrix with independent entries satisfies the circular law. We consider the product $TX$, where $T$ is a deterministic $N\times M$ matrix and $X$ is a random $M\times N$ matrix with independent entries having zero mean and variance $(N\wedge M)^{-1}$. We prove a general local circular law for the empirical spectral distribution (ESD) of $TX$ at any point $z$ away from the unit circle under the assumptions that $N\sim M$, and the matrix entries $X_{ij}$ have sufficiently high moments. More precis…
We consider the joint distribution of real and imaginary parts of eigenvalues of random matrices with independent real entries with mean zero and unit variance. We prove the convergence of this distribution to the uniform distribution on the unit disc without assumptions on the existence of a density for the distribution of entries. We assume however that the entries have sub-Gaussian tails or are sparsely non-zero.
Let $\log^Cn\le d\le n/2$ for a sufficiently large constant $C>0$ and let $A_n$ denote the adjacency matrix of a uniform random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices. We prove that as $n$ tends to infinity, the empirical spectral distribution of $A_n$, suitably rescaled, is governed by the Circular Law. A key step is to obtain quantitative lower tail bounds for the smallest singular value of additive perturbations of $A_n$.
For a class of sparse random matrices of the form $A_n =(ξ_{i,j}δ_{i,j})_{i,j=1}^n$, where $\{ξ_{i,j}\}$ are i.i.d.~centered sub-Gaussian random variables of unit variance, and $\{δ_{i,j}\}$ are i.i.d.~Bernoulli random variables taking value $1$ with probability $p_n$, we prove that the empirical spectral distribution of $A_n/\sqrt{np_n}$ converges weakly to the circular law, in probability, for all $p_n$ such that $p_n=ω({\log^2n}/{n})$. Additionally if $p_n$ satisfies the inequality $np_n > \exp(c\sqrt{\log n})$ for some constant $c$, then the above convergence is shown to hold almost surely…
Fix a constant $C\geq 1$ and let $d=d(n)$ satisfy $d\leq \ln^{C} n$ for every large integer $n$. Denote by $A_n$ the adjacency matrix of a uniform random directed $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices. We show that, as long as $d\to\infty$ with $n$, the empirical spectral distribution of appropriately rescaled matrix $A_n$ converges weakly in probability to the circular law. This result, together with an earlier work of Cook, completely settles the problem of weak convergence of the empirical distribution in directed $d$-regular setting with the degree tending to infinity. As a crucial element of …
Let $(X_{jk})_{j,k\geq 1}$ be an infinite array of i.i.d. complex random variables, with mean 0 and variance 1. Let $\la_{n,1},...,\la_{n,n}$ be the eigenvalues of $(\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}X_{jk})_{1\leq j,k\leq n}$. The strong circular law theorem states that with probability one, the empirical spectral distribution $\frac{1}{n}(\de_{\la_{n,1}}+...+\de_{\la_{n,n}})$ converges weakly as $n\to\infty$ to the uniform law over the unit disc $\{z\in\dC;|z|\leq1\}$. In this short note, we provide an elementary argument that allows to add a deterministic matrix $M$ to $(X_{jk})_{1\leq j,k\leq n}$ provided…
This paper extends a previous bound of order $O(n^{-1})$ of the authors (arXiv:1405.7820[math.PR]), for the rate of convergence in Kolmogorov distance of the expected spectral distribution of a Wigner random matrix ensemble to the semicircular law. Here we relax the moment conditions for entries of the Wigner matrices from order $8$ to order $4+ ε$ for an arbitrary small $ε>0$.
Let $\mathbf X=(X_{jk})_{j,k=1}^n$ denote a Hermitian random matrix with entries $X_{jk}$, which are independent for $1\le j\le k\le n$. We consider the rate of convergence of the empirical spectral distribution function of the matrix $\mathbf X$ to the semi-circular law assuming that ${\mathbf E} X_{jk}=0$, ${\mathbf E} X_{jk}^2=1$ and that $$ \sup_{n\ge1}\sup_{1\le j,k\le n}{\mathbf E}|X_{jk}|^4=:μ_4<\infty \quad \text{and} \sup_{1\le j,k\le n}|X_{jk}|\le D_0n^{\frac14}. $$ By means of a recursion argument it is shown that the Kolmogorov distance between the expected spectral distribution of…
We consider non-Hermitian random matrices $X \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}$ with general decaying correlations between their entries. For large $n$, the empirical spectral distribution is well approximated by a deterministic density, expressed in terms of the solution to a system of two coupled non-linear $n \times n$ matrix equations. This density is interpreted as the Brown measure of a linear combination of free circular elements with matrix coefficients on a non-commutative probability space. It is radially symmetric, real analytic in the radial variable and strictly positive on a disk aroun…
Let $M_n$ be a random matrix of size $n\times n$ and let $λ_1,...,λ_n$ be the eigenvalues of $M_n$. The empirical spectral distribution $μ_{M_n}$ of $M_n$ is defined as $$μ_{M_n}(s,t)=\frac{1}{n}# \{k\le n, \Re(λ_k)\le s; \Im(λ_k)\le t\}.$$ The circular law theorem in random matrix theory asserts that if the entries of $M_n$ are i.i.d. copies of a random variable with mean zero and variance $σ^2$, then the empirical spectral distribution of the normalized matrix $\frac{1}{σ\sqrt{n}}M_n$ of $M_n$ converges almost surely to the uniform distribution $μ_\cir$ over the unit disk as $n$ tends to inf…
We consider random $n\times n$ matrices of the form $Y_n=\frac1{\sqrt{d}}A_n\circ X_n$, where $A_n$ is the adjacency matrix of a uniform random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices, with $d=\lfloor p n\rfloor$ for some fixed $p \in (0,1)$, and $X_n$ is an $n\times n$ matrix of iid centered random variables with unit variance and finite $4+η$-th moment (here $\circ$ denotes the matrix Hadamard product). We show that as $n\to \infty$, the empirical spectral distribution of $Y_n$ converges weakly in probability to the normalized Lebesgue measure on the unit disk.
Consider an nxn random matrix X with i.i.d. nonnegative entries with bounded density, mean m, and finite positive variance sigma^2. Let M be the nxn random Markov matrix with i.i.d. rows obtained from X by dividing each row of X by its sum. In particular, when X11 follows an exponential law, then M belongs to the Dirichlet Markov Ensemble of random stochastic matrices. Our main result states that with probability one, the counting probability measure of the complex spectrum of n^(1/2)M converges weakly as n tends to infinity to the uniform law on the centered disk of radius sigma/m. The bounde…
The universality phenomenon asserts that the distribution of the eigenvalues of random matrix with i.i.d. zero mean, unit variance entries does not depend on the underlying structure of the random entries. For example, a plot of the eigenvalues of a random sign matrix, where each entry is +1 or -1 with equal probability, looks the same as an analogous plot of the eigenvalues of a random matrix where each entry is complex Gaussian with zero mean and unit variance. In the current paper, we prove a universality result for sparse random n by n matrices where each entry is nonzero with probability …
Let $\mathbf X=(X_{jk})$ denote a Hermitian random matrix with entries $X_{jk}$, which are independent for $1\le j\le k$. We consider the rate of convergence of the empirical spectral distribution function of the matrix $\mathbf X$ to the semi-circular law assuming that $\mathbf E X_{jk}=0$, $\mathbf E X_{jk}^2=1$ and that the distributions of the matrix elements $X_{jk}$ have a uniform sub exponential decay in the sense that there exists a constant $\varkappa>0$ such that for any $1\le j\le k\le n$ and any $t\ge 1$ we have $$ \Pr\{|X_{jk}|>t\}\le \varkappa^{-1}\exp\{-t^{\varkappa}\}. $$ By me…
Let $\a$ be a complex random variable with mean zero and bounded variance $σ^{2}$. Let $N_{n}$ be a random matrix of order $n$ with entries being i.i.d. copies of $\a$. Let $λ_{1}, ..., λ_{n}$ be the eigenvalues of $\frac{1}{σ\sqrt n}N_{n}$. Define the empirical spectral distribution $μ_{n}$ of $N_{n}$ by the formula $$ μ_n(s,t) := \frac{1}{n} # \{k \leq n| \Re(λ_k) \leq s; \Im(λ_k) \leq t \}.$$ The Circular law conjecture asserts that $μ_{n}$ converges to the uniform distribution $μ_\infty$ over the unit disk as $n$ tends to infinity. We prove this conjecture under the slightly stronger assum…
We consider the joint distribution of real and imaginary parts of eigenvalues of random matrices with independent entries with mean zero and unit variance. We prove the convergence of this distribution to the uniform distribution on the unit disc without assumptions on the existence of a density for the distribution of entries. We assume that the entries have a finite moment of order larger than two and consider the case of sparse matrices. The results are based on previous work of Bai, Rudelson and the authors extending those results to a larger class of sparse matrices.
The link between Gaussian random fields and Markov random fields is well established based on a stochastic partial differential equation in Euclidean spaces, where the Matérn covariance functions are essential. However, the Matérn covariance functions are not always positive definite on circles and spheres. In this manuscript, we focus on the extension of this link to circles, and show that the link between Gaussian random fields and Markov random fields on circles is valid based on the circular Matérn covariance function instead. First, we show that this circular Matérn function is the covari…
We consider the complex eigenvalues of a Wishart type random matrix model $X=X_1 X_2^*$, where two rectangular complex Ginibre matrices $X_{1,2}$ of size $N\times (N+ν)$ are correlated through a non-Hermiticity parameter $τ\in[0,1]$. For general $ν=O(N)$ and $τ$ we obtain the global limiting density and its support, given by a shifted ellipse. It provides a non-Hermitian generalisation of the Marchenko-Pastur distribution, which is recovered at maximal correlation $X_1=X_2$ when $τ=1$. The square root of the complex Wishart eigenvalues, corresponding to the non-zero complex eigenvalues of the …
We give a simple proof of a central limit theorem for linear statistics of the Circular beta-ensembles which is valid at almost arbitrary mesoscopic scale and for functions of class C^3. As a consequence, using a coupling introduced by Valko and Virag, we deduce a central limit theorem for the Sine beta processes. We also discuss the connection between our result and the theory of Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos. Based on the results of Lambert-Ostrovsky-Simm, we show that the exponential of the logarithm of the real (and imaginary) part of the characteristic polynomial of the Circular beta-ense…
Given an $n \times n$ complex matrix $A$, let $$μ_{A}(x,y):= \frac{1}{n} |\{1\le i \le n, \Re λ_i \le x, \Im λ_i \le y\}|$$ be the empirical spectral distribution (ESD) of its eigenvalues $λ_i \in \BBC, i=1, ... n$. We consider the limiting distribution (both in probability and in the almost sure convergence sense) of the normalized ESD $μ_{\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} A_n}$ of a random matrix $A_n = (a_{ij})_{1 \leq i,j \leq n}$ where the random variables $a_{ij} - \E(a_{ij})$ are iid copies of a fixed random variable $x$ with unit variance. We prove a \emph{universality principle} for such ensembles, …
A positive correlation inequality is established for circular-invariant plurisubharmonic functions, with respect to complex Gaussian measures. The main ingredients of the proofs are the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup, and another natural semigroup associated to the Gaussian $\partial$-Laplacian.
In this paper, by using the exact tail asymptotics derived by Debicki, Hashorva and Ji (Ann. Probab. 2014), we proved the Gumbel limit theorem for the maximum of a class of non-homogeneous Gaussian random fields. By using the obtained results, we also derived the Gumbel laws for Shepp statistics of fractional Brownian motion and Gaussian integrated process as well as the Gumbel law for Storage process with fractional Brownian motion as input.
We present three new identities in law for quadratic functionals of conditioned bivariate Gaussian processes. In particular, our results provide a two-parameter generalization of a celebrated identity in law, involving the path variance of a Brownian bridge, due to Watson (1961). The proof is based on ideas from a recent note by J. R. Pycke (2005) and on the stochastic Fubini theorem for general Gaussian measures proved in Deheuvels et al. (2004).
The aim of this paper is to give a precise asymptotic description of some eigenvalue statistics stemming from random matrix theory. More precisely, we consider random determinants of the GUE, Laguerre, Uniform Gram and Jacobi beta ensembles and random characteristic polynomials evaluated at 1 for matrices in the Circular and Circular Jacobi beta ensembles. We use the framework of mod-Gaussian convergence to provide quantitative estimates of their logarithmic behavior, as the size of the ensemble grows to infinity. We establish central limit theorems, Berry-Esseen bounds, moderate deviations an…

We study the regular conditional law of mixed Gaussian Volterra processes under the influence of model disturbances. More precisely, we study prediction of Gaussian Volterra processes driven by a Brownian motion in a case where the Brownian motion is not observable, but only a noisy version is observed. As an application, we discuss how our result can be applied to variance reduction in the presence of measurement errors.
We study the local semicircle law for Gaussian $β$-ensembles at the edge of the spectrum. We prove that at the almost optimal level of $n^{-2/3+ε}$, the local semicircle law holds for all $β\geq 1$ at the edge. The proof of the main theorem relies on the calculation of the moments of the tridiagonal model of Gaussian $β$-ensembles up to the $p_n$-moment where $p_n = O(n^{2/3-ε})$. The result is the analogous to the result of Sinai and Soshnikov for Wigner matrices, but the combinatorics involved in the calculations are different.
We consider the two-dimensional Gaussian Free Field on a box of side length $N$, with Dirichlet boundary data, and prove the convergence of the law of the recentered maximum of the field.
