We extend our recent result [Cipolloni, Erdős, Schröder 2019] on the central limit theorem for the linear eigenvalue statistics of non-Hermitian matrices $X$ with independent, identically distributed complex entries to the real symmetry class. We find that the expectation and variance substantially differ from their complex counterparts, reflecting (i) the special spectral symmetry of real matrices onto the real axis; and (ii) the fact that real i.i.d. matrices have many real eigenvalues. Our result generalizes the previously known special cases where either the test function is analytic [O'Rourke, Renfrew 2016] or the first four moments of the matrix elements match the real Gaussian [Tao, Vu 2015; Kopel 2015]. The key element of the proof is the analysis of several weakly dependent Dyson Brownian motions (DBMs). The conceptual novelty of the real case compared with [Cipolloni, Erdős, Schröder 2019] is that the correlation structure of the stochastic differentials in each individual DBM is non-trivial, potentially even jeopardising its well-posedness.
We extend the results about the fluctuations of the matrix entries of regular functions of Wigner matrices to the case of sample covariance random matrices.
In this note, we extend the results about the fluctuations of the matrix entries of regular functions of Wigner random matrices obtained in arXiv:1103.3731 [math.PR] to Wigner matrices with non-i.i.d. entries provided certain Lindeberg type conditions for the fourth moments of the off-diagonal entries and the second moments of the diagonal entries are satisfied. In addition, we relax our conditions on the test functions and require that for some $s>3 \ \int (1+|k|)^{2s}\*|\hat{f}(k)|^2 \* dk <\infty.$
This paper is a continuation of our paper "Fluctuations of Matrix Elements of Regular Functions of Gaussian Random Matrices", J. Stat. Phys. (134), 147--159 (2009), in which we proved the Central Limit Theorem for the matrix elements of differential functions of the real symmetric random Gaussian matrices (GOE). Here we consider the real symmetric random Wigner matrices having independent (modulo symmetry conditions) but not necessarily Gaussian entries. We show that in this case the matrix elements of sufficiently smooth functions of these random matrices have in general another limiting law …
It is a classical result of Wigner that for an hermitian matrix with independent entries on and above the diagonal, the mean empirical eigenvalue distribution converges weakly to the semicircle law as matrix size tends to infinity. In this paper, we prove analogs of Wigner's theorem for random matrices taken from all infinitesimal versions of classical symmetric spaces. This is a class of models which contains those studied by Wigner and Dyson, along with seven others arising in condensed matter physics. Like Wigner's, our results are universal in that they only depend on certain assumptions a…
We study the fluctuations of the matrix entries of regular functions of Wigner random matrices in the limit when the matrix size goes to infinity. In the case of the Gaussian ensembles (GOE and GUE) this problem was considered by A.Lytova and L.Pastur in J. Stat. Phys., v.134, 147-159 (2009). Our results are valid provided the off-diagonal matrix entries have finite fourth moment, the diagonal matrix entries have finite second moment, and the test functions have four continuous derivatives in a neighborhood of the support of the Wigner semicircle law.
An elliptic random matrix $X$ is a square matrix whose $(i,j)$-entry $X_{ij}$ is independent of the rest of the entries except possibly $X_{ji}$. Elliptic random matrices generalize Wigner matrices and non-Hermitian random matrices with independent entries. When the entries of an elliptic random matrix have mean zero and unit variance, the empirical spectral distribution is known to converge to the uniform distribution on the interior of an ellipse determined by the covariance of the mirrored entries. We consider elliptic random matrices whose entries fail to have two finite moments. Our main …
In this paper we consider Wigner random matrices -- symmetric n by n random matrices whose entries are independent identically distributed real random variables. We prove that the probability distribution of one or several eigenvalues close to the center of the spectrum does not depend on the probability distribution of the entries of the matrix and is the same as for the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. We make only mild smoothness assumptions on the probability distribution of the entries and assume that the probability distribution of the entries decays polynomially with sufficiently large pow…
We study the asymptotic behavior of outliers in the spectrum of bounded rank perturbations of large random matrices. In particular, we consider perturbations of elliptic random matrices which generalize both Wigner random matrices and non-Hermitian random matrices with iid entries. As a consequence, we recover the results of Capitaine, Donati-Martin, and Féral for perturbed Wigner matrices as well as the results of Tao for perturbed random matrices with iid entries. Along the way, we prove a number of interesting results concerning elliptic random matrices whose entries have finite fourth mome…
We consider random $n\times n$ matrices $X$ with independent and centered entries and a general variance profile. We show that the spectral radius of $X$ converges with very high probability to the square root of the spectral radius of the variance matrix of $X$ when $n$ tends to infinity. We also establish the optimal rate of convergence, that is a new result even for general i.i.d. matrices beyond the explicitly solvable Gaussian cases. The main ingredient is the proof of the local inhomogeneous circular law [arXiv:1612.07776] at the spectral edge.
An exchangeable random matrix is a random matrix with distribution invariant under any permutation of the entries. For such random matrices, we show, as the dimension tends to infinity, that the empirical spectral distribution tends to the uniform law on the unit disc. This is an instance of the universality phenomenon known as the circular law, for a model of random matrices with dependent entries, rows, and columns. It is also a non-Hermitian counterpart of a result of Chatterjee on the semi-circular law for random Hermitian matrices with exchangeable entries. The proof relies in particular …
We consider large random matrices $X$ with centered, independent entries which have comparable but not necessarily identical variances. Girko's circular law asserts that the spectrum is supported in a disk and in case of identical variances, the limiting density is uniform. In this special case, the local circular law by Bourgade et. al. [11,12] shows that the empirical density converges even locally on scales slightly above the typical eigenvalue spacing. In the general case, the limiting density is typically inhomogeneous and it is obtained via solving a system of deterministic equations. Ou…
We apply the method of determinants to study the distribution of the largest singular values of large $ m \times n $ real rectangular random matrices with independent Cauchy entries. We show that statistical properties of the (rescaled by a factor of $ \frac{1}{m^2\*n^2}$)largest singular values agree in the limit with the statistics of the inhomogeneous Poisson random point process with the intensity $ \frac{1}π x^{-3/2} $ and, therefore, are different from the Tracy-Widom law. Among other corollaries of our method we show an interesting connection between the mathematical expectations of the…
We consider ensembles of $N \times N$ Hermitian Wigner matrices, whose entries are (up to the symmetry constraints) independent and identically distributed random variables. Assuming sufficient regularity for the probability density function of the entries, we show that the expectation of the density of states on {\it arbitrarily} small intervals converges to the semicircle law, as $N$ tends to infinity.
The probability of the small deviations of the matrix $AA^T$ determinant is estimated, where $A$ is an $n\times\infty$ random matrix with centered entries having joint Gaussian distribution. The inequality obtained is sharp in a sence.
Consider an $n \times n$ non-Hermitian random matrix $M_n$ whose entries are independent real random variables. Under suitable conditions on the entries, we study the fluctuations of the entries of $f(M_n)$ as $n$ tends to infinity, where $f$ is analytic on an appropriate domain. This extends the results for symmetric random matrices to the non-Hermitian case.
In this article, we study the fluctuation of linear eigenvalue statistics of symmetric circulant matrices $(SC_n)$ with independent entries which satisfy some moment conditions. We show that $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} \Tr ϕ(SC_n)$ obey the central limit theorem (CLT) type result, where $ϕ$ is a nice test function.
We prove optimal local law, bulk universality and non-trivial decay for the off-diagonal elements of the resolvent for a class of translation invariant Gaussian random matrix ensembles with correlated entries.
We give a non-asymptotic bound on the spectral norm of a $d\times d$ matrix $X$ with centered jointly Gaussian entries in terms of the covariance matrix of the entries. In some cases, this estimate is sharp and removes the $\sqrt{\log d}$ factor in the noncommutative Khintchine inequality.
We prove the convergence of the empirical spectral measure of Wishart matrices with size-dependent entries and characterize the limiting law by its moments. We apply our result to the cases where the entries are Bernoulli variables with parameter c=n or truncated heavy-tailed random variables. In both cases, when c goes to infinity or when the truncation is small, the limiting spectrum is a perturbation of the Marchenko-Pastur distribution and we compute its leading term.
We consider ensembles of real symmetric band matrices with entries drawn from an infinite sequence of exchangeable random variables, as far as the symmetry of the matrices permits. In general the entries of the upper triangular parts of these matrices are correlated and no smallness or sparseness of these correlations is assumed. It is shown that the eigenvalue distribution measures still converge to a semicircle but with random scaling. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding $\ell_2$-operator norms. The key to our analysis is a generalisation of a classic result by d…
We consider the joint distribution of real and imaginary parts of eigenvalues of random matrices with independent real entries with mean zero and unit variance. We prove the convergence of this distribution to the uniform distribution on the unit disc without assumptions on the existence of a density for the distribution of entries. We assume however that the entries have sub-Gaussian tails or are sparsely non-zero.
We prove that an n by n random matrix G with independent entries is completely delocalized. Suppose the entries of G have zero means, variances uniformly bounded below, and a uniform tail decay of exponential type. Then with high probability all unit eigenvectors of G have all coordinates of magnitude O(n^{-1/2}), modulo logarithmic corrections. This comes a consequence of a new, geometric, approach to delocalization for random matrices.
We derive concentration inequalities for functions of the empirical measure of large random matrices with infinitely divisible entries and, in particular, stable ones. We also give concentration results for some other functionals of these random matrices, such as the largest eigenvalue or the largest singular value.
We consider a class of real random matrices with dependent entries and show that the limiting empirical spectral distribution is given by the Marchenko-Pastur law. Additionally, we establish a rate of convergence of the expected empirical spectral distribution.
We consider products of independent square non-Hermitian random matrices. More precisely, let X(1),...,X(n) be random matrices with independent entries (real or complex with independent real and imaginary parts) with zero mean and variance 1/N. Soshnikov and O'Rourke showed that the empirical spectral distribution of the product X(1)X(2)..X(n) converges to the n-th power of the circular law. We prove that if the entries of the matrices X(1),...,X(n) satisfy uniform subexponential decay condition, then in the bulk the convergence of the ESD holds up to the optimal scale.
This paper deals with symmetric random matrices whose upper diagonal entries are obtained from a linear random field with heavy tailed noise. It is shown that the maximum eigenvalue and the spectral radius of such a random matrix with dependent entries converge to the Frechét distribution after appropriate scaling. This extends a seminal result of Soshnikov(2004) when the tail index is strictly less than one.
We investigate concentration properties of spectral measures of Hermitian random matrices with partially dependent entries. More precisely, let $X_n$ be a Hermitian random matrix of size $n\times n$ that can be split into independent blocks of the size at most $d_n=o(n^2)$. We prove that under some mild conditions on the distribution of the entries of $X_n$, the empirical spectral measure of $X_n$ concentrates around its mean. The main theorem is a strengthening of a recent result by Kemp and Zimmerman, where the size of blocks grows as $o(\log n)$. As an application, we are able to upgrade th…
We consider n by n real matrices whose entries are non-degenerate random variables that are independent but non necessarily identically distributed, and show that the probability that such a matrix is singular is O(1/sqrt{n}). The purpose of this note is to provide a short and elementary proof of this fact using a Bernoulli decomposition of arbitrary non degenerate random variables.
For symmetric random matrices with correlated entries, which are functions of independent random variables, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the empirical eigenvalue distribution can be obtained by analyzing a Gaussian matrix with the same covariance structure. This class contains both cases of short and long range dependent random fields. The technique is based on a blend of blocking procedure and Lindeberg's method. This method leads to a variety of interesting asymptotic results for matrices with dependent entries, including applications to linear processes as well as nonlinear Volte…
In this paper, we derive limit laws for the empirical spectral distributions of random band and block matrices with correlated entries. In the first part of the paper, we study band matrices with approximately uncorrelated entries. We strengthen previously obtained results while requiring weaker assumptions, which is made possible by a refined application of the method of moments. In the second part of the paper, we introduce a new two-layered correlation structure we call SSB-HKW correlated, which enables the study of structured random matrices with correlated entries. Our results include sem…
We consider products of independent square random non-Hermitian matrices. More precisely, let $n\geq 2$ and let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be independent $N\times N$ random matrices with independent centered entries with variance $N^{-1}$. It was shown by Götze and Tikhomirov and by Soshnikov and O'Rourke that the limit of the empirical spectral distribution of the product $X_1\cdots X_n$ is supported in the unit disk. We prove that if the entries of the matrices $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ satisfy uniform subexponential decay condition, then the spectral radius of $X_1\cdots X_n$ converges to 1 almost surely as $…
We study the empirical spectral distribution (ESD) of symmetric random matrices with ergodic entries on the diagonals. We observe that for entries with correlations that decay to 0, when the distance of the diagonal entries becomes large the limiting ESD is the well known semicircle law. If it does not decay to 0 (and have the same sign) the semicircle law cannot be the limit of the ESD. This is good agreement with results on exchangeable processes analysed in Friesen and Löwe (2013a) and Hochstättler et al. (2016).
In this article, we will consider Wishart Matrices with correlated entries, but with a strictly log-concave law. It has been shown by A.Pajor and L.Pastur that the empirical measures of such matrices converges. We will show, under some symmetry and convergence hypotheses, that in this case the central limit theorem for linear statistics holds around their limit, and deduce the convergence of the support to the support of the limiting measure. We also provide the convergence of the Expectation and the Covariance.
We study matrices whose entries are free or exchangeable noncommutative elements in some tracial $W^*$-probability space. More precisely, we consider operator-valued Wigner and Wishart matrices and prove quantitative convergence to operator-valued semicircular elements over some subalgebra in terms of Cauchy transforms. As direct applications, we obtain explicit rates of convergence for a large class of random block matrices with independent or correlated blocks. Our approach relies on a noncommutative extension of the Lindeberg method and operator-valued Gaussian interpolation techniques.
In this paper we study ensembles of random symmetric matrices $\X_n = {X_{ij}}_{i,j = 1}^n$ with dependent entries such that $\E X_{ij} = 0$, $\E X_{ij}^2 = σ_{ij}^2$, where $σ_{ij}$ may be different numbers. Assuming that the average of the normalized sums of variances in each row converges to one and Lindeberg condition holds we prove that the empirical spectral distribution of eigenvalues converges to Wigner's semicircle law.
Let $T$ be an $n\times n$ random matrix, such that each diagonal entry $T_{i,i}$ is a continuous random variable, independent from all the other entries of $T$. Then for every $n\times n$ matrix $A$ and every $t\ge0$ $$ \p\Big[|\det(A+T)|^{1/n}\le t\Big]\le2bnt, $$ where $b>0$ is a uniform upper bound on the densities of $T_{i,i}$.
We explore the validity of the circular law for random matrices with non i.i.d. entries. Let A be a random n \times n real matrix having as a random vector in R^{n^2} a log-concave isotropic unconditional law. In particular, the entries are uncorellated and have a symmetric law of zero mean and unit variance. This allows for some dependence and non equidistribution among the entries, while keeping the special case of i.i.d. standard Gaussian entries. Our main result states that as n goes to infinity, the empirical spectral distribution of n^{-1/2}A tends to the uniform law on the unit disc of …
We study the limiting spectral distribution of sample covariance matrices $XX^T$, where $X$ are $p\times n$ random matrices with correlated entries, for the cases $p/n\to y\in [0,\infty)$. If $y>0$, we obtain the Marčenko-Pastur distribution and in the case $y=0$ the semicircle distribution (after appropriate rescaling). The entries we consider are Curie-Weiss spins, which are correlated random signs, where the degree of the correlation is governed by an inverse temperature $β>0$. The model exhibits a phase transition at $β=1$. The correlation between any two entries decays at a rate of $O(np)…
We analyze the empirical spectral distribution of random periodic band matrices with correlated entries. The correlation structure we study was first introduced in 2015 by Hochstättler, Kirsch and Warzel, who named their setup "almost uncorrelated" and showed convergence to the semicircle distribution in probability. We strengthen their results which turn out to be also valid almost surely. Moreover, we extend them to band matrices. Sufficient conditions for convergence to the semicircle distribution both in probability and almost surely are provided. In contrast to convergence in probability,…
In this article, we consider random Wigner matrices, that is symmetric matrices such that the subdiagonal entries of Xn are independent, centered, and with variance one except on the diagonal where the entries have variance two. We prove that, under some suitable hypotheses on the laws of the entries, the law of the largest eigenvalue satisfies a large deviation principle with the same rate function as in the Gaussian case. The crucial assumption is that the Laplace transform of the entries must be bounded above by the Laplace transform of a centered Gaussian variable with same variance. This …
We extend probability estimates on the smallest singular value of random matrices with independent entries to a class of sparse random matrices. We show that one can relax a previously used condition of uniform boundedness of the variances from below. This allows us to consider matrices with null entries or, more generally, with entries having small variances. Our results do not assume identical distribution of the entries of a random matrix and help to clarify the role of the variances of the entries. We also show that it is enough to require boundedness from above of the $r$-th moment, $r > …
We consider the set Sigma(R,C) of all mxn matrices having 0-1 entries and prescribed row sums R=(r_1, ..., r_m) and column sums C=(c_1, ..., c_n). We prove an asymptotic estimate for the cardinality |Sigma(R, C)| via the solution to a convex optimization problem. We show that if Sigma(R, C) is sufficiently large, then a random matrix D in Sigma(R, C) sampled from the uniform probability measure in Sigma(R,C) with high probability is close to a particular matrix Z=Z(R,C) that maximizes the sum of entropies of entries among all matrices with row sums R, column sums C and entries between 0 and 1.…
We show that the spectral radius of an $N\times N$ random symmetric matrix with i.i.d. bounded centered but non-symmetrically distributed entries is bounded from above by $ 2 \*σ+ o(N^{-6/11+ε}), $ where $σ^2 $ is the variance of the matrix entries and $ε$ is an arbitrary small positive number. Our bound improves the earlier results by Z.Füredi and J.Komlós (1981), and the recent bound obtained by Van Vu (2005).
We study point process convergence for sequences of iid random walks. The objective is to derive asymptotic theory for the extremes of these random walks. We show convergence of the maximum random walk to the Gumbel distribution under the existence of a $(2+δ)$th moment. We make heavily use of precise large deviation results for sums of iid random variables. As a consequence, we derive the joint convergence of the off-diagonal entries in sample covariance and correlation matrices of a high-dimensional sample whose dimension increases with the sample size. This generalizes known results on the …
We show that the spectral radius of an $N\times N$ random symmetric matrix with i.i.d. bounded centered but non-symmetrically distributed entries is bounded from below by $ 2 \*σ- o(N^{-6/11+ε}), $ where $σ^2 $ is the variance of the matrix entries and $ε$ is an arbitrary small positive number. Combining with our previous result from [7], this proves that for any $ε>0, $ one has $$ \|A_N\| =2 \*σ+ o(N^{-6/11+ε}) $$ with probability going to 1 as $N \to \infty. $
We consider $n\times n$ real symmetric and Hermitian Wigner random matrices $n^{-1/2}W$ with independent (modulo symmetry condition) entries and the (null) sample covariance matrices $n^{-1}X^*X$ with independent entries of $m\times n$ matrix $X$. Assuming first that the 4th cumulant (excess) $κ_4$ of entries of $W$ and $X$ is zero and that their 4th moments satisfy a Lindeberg type condition, we prove that linear statistics of eigenvalues of the above matrices satisfy the central limit theorem (CLT) as $n\to\infty$, $m\to\infty$, $m/n\to c\in[0,\infty)$ with the same variance as for Gaussian …
For a class of symmetric random matrices whose entries are martingale differences adapted to an increasing filtration, we prove that under a Lindeberg-like condition, the empirical spectral distribution behaves asymptotically similarly to a corresponding matrix with independent centered Gaussian entries having the same variances. Under a slightly reinforced condition, the approximation holds in the almost sure sense. We also point out several sufficient regularity conditions imposed to the variance structure for convergence to the semicircle law or the Marchenko-Pastur law and other convergenc…
Patterned random matrices such as the reverse circulant, the symmetric circulant, the Toeplitz and the Hankel matrices and their almost sure limiting spectral distribution (LSD), have attracted much attention. Under the assumption that the entries are taken from an i.i.d. sequence with finite variance, the LSD are tied together by a common thread -- the $2k$th moment of the limit equals a weighted sum over different types of pair-partitions of the set $\{1, 2, \ldots, 2k\}$ and are universal. Some results are also known for the sparse case. In this paper we generalise these results by relaxing…
Let $(g_{n})_{n\geq 1}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed positive random $d\times d$ matrices and consider the matrix product $G_n: = g_n \ldots g_1$. Under suitable conditions, we establish the Berry-Esseen bounds on the rate of convergence in the central limit theorem and moderate deviation expansions of Cramér type, for the matrix norm $\| G_n \|$ of $G_n$, for its $(i,j)$-th entry $G_n^{i,j}$, and the and for its spectral radius $ρ(G_n)$.
