In this paper, we define the functor category Fquad associated to vector spaces over the field with two elements, F\_2, equipped with a quadratic form. We show the existence of a fully-faithful, exact functor ι: \F \to Fquad, which preserves simple objects, where \F is the category of functors from the category of finite dimensional F\_2-vector spaces to the category of all F\_2-vector spaces. We define the subcategory Fiso of Fquad, which is equivalent to the product of the categories of modules over the orthogonal groups; the inclusion is a fully-faithful functor κ: Fiso \to Fquad which preserves simple objects.
In this paper, we continue the study of the category of functors Fquad, associated to F_2-vector spaces equipped with a nondegenerate quadratic form, initiated in two previous papers of the author. We define a filtration of the standard projective objects in Fquad; this refines to give a decomposition into indecomposable factors of the two first standard projective objects in Fquad. As an application of these two decompositions, we give a complete description of the polynomial functors of the category Fquad.
In previous work, we defined the category of functors Fquad, associated to vector spaces over the field with two elements equipped with a nondegenerate quadratic form. In this paper, we define a special family of objects in the category Fquad, named the mixed functors. We give the complete decompositions of two elements of this family that give rise to two new infinite families of simple objects in the category Fquad.
We show that the category of $n$-excisive functors from the $\infty$-category of spectra to a target stable $\infty$-category $\mathbf{E}$ is equivalent to the category of $\mathbf{E}$-valued Mackey functors on an indexing category built from finite sets and surjections. This new classification of polynomial functors arises from an investigation of the structure present on cross effects. The path to this result involves a pair of surprising extension theorems for polynomial functors and a discussion of some interesting topics in semiadditive $\infty$- category theory, including a formula for t…
We uncover several general phenomenas governing functor homology over additive categories. In particular, we generalize the strong comparison theorem of Franjou Friedlander Scorichenko and Suslin to the setting of Fp-linear additive categories. Our results have a strong impact in terms of explicit computations of functor homology, and they open the way to new applications to stable homology of groups or to K-theory. As an illustration, we prove comparison theorems between cohomologies of classical algebraic groups over infinite perfect fields, in the spirit of a celebrated result of Cline, Par…
If $D$ is a Reedy category and $M$ is a model category, the category $M^{D}$ of $D$-diagrams in $M$ is a model category under the Reedy model category structure. If $C \to D$ is a Reedy functor between Reedy categories, then there is an induced functor of diagram categories $M^{D} \to M^{C}$. Our main result is a characterization of the Reedy functors $C \to D$ that induce right or left Quillen functors $M^{D} \to M^{C}$ for every model category $M$. We apply these results to various situations, and in particular show that certain important subdiagrams of a fibrant multicosimplicial object are…
We introduce and study a general notion of polynomial functor from a small monoidal symmetric category whose unit is an initial object and give a classification result of polynomial functors of degree smaller of equal to n modulo those of degree smaller of equal to n-1 in the case of a category of hermitian spaces.
The tensor functor from the category of $A_\infty$-algebras into the category of differential modules with $\infty$-simplicial faces is constructed. Further, it is showed that this functor sends homotopy equivalent $A_\infty$-algebras into homotopy equivalent differential modules with $\infty$-simplicial faces.
We define the Grothendieck-Witt category over a fixed ground ring. In order to study the structure of this category, we introduce the general theory of Gysin functors and their associated categories of correspondences. The latter generalizes the familiar construction of the Burnside category over a finite group. We prove various results about the structure of these correspondence categories, and we prove a "recognition theorem" loosely saying that these correspondence categories naturally show up in situations where one has both a symmetric monoidal structure and transfers. Returning to the Gr…
We study liftings of abelian model structures to categories of chain complexes and construct a realization functor from the derived category of a Grothendieck abelian category equipped with a cofibrantly generated, hereditary abelian model structure to the homotopy category of that model structure.
We distinguish between faint, weak, strong and strict localizations of categories at morphism families and show that this framework captures the different types of derived functors that are considered in the literature. More precisely, we show that Kan and faint derived functors coincide when we use the classical Kan homotopy category, and when we use the Quillen homotopy category, Kan and strong derived functors coincide. Our comparison results are based on the fact that the Kan homotopy category is a weak localization and that the Quillen homotopy category is a strict localization.
We produce a highly structured way of associating a simplicial category to a model category which improves on work of Dwyer and Kan and answers a question of Hovey. We show that model categories satisfying a certain axiom are Quillen equivalent to simplicial model categories. A simplicial model category provides higher order structure such as composable mapping spaces and homotopy colimits. We also show that certain homotopy invariant functors can be replaced by weakly equivalent simplicial, or `continuous', functors. This is used to show that if a simplicial model category structure exists on…
In the theory of operads we consider functors of generalized symmetric powers defined by sums of coinvariant modules under actions of symmetric groups. One observes classically that the construction of symmetric functors provides an isomorphism from the category of symmetric modules to a subcategory of the category of functors on the base category. The purpose of this book is to obtain a similar relationship for functors on a category of algebras over an operad. We observe that right modules over operads, symmetric modules equipped with a right operad action, give rise to functors on categorie…
Recently, the Johnson-McCarthy discrete calculus for homotopy functors was extended to include functors from an unbased simplicial model category to spectra. This paper completes the constructions needed to ensure that there exists a discrete calculus tower for functors from an unbased simplicial model category to chain complexes over a fixed commutative ring. Much of the construction of the Taylor tower for functors to spectra carries over to this context. However, one of the essential steps in the construction requires proving that a particular functor is part of a cotriple. For this, one ne…
Let M be a smooth manifold, and let O(M) be the poset of open subsets of M. Let C be a category that has a zero object and all small limits. A homogeneous functor (in the sense of manifold calculus) of degree k from O(M) to C is called very good if it sends isotopy equivalences to isomorphisms. In this paper we show that the category VGHF of such functors is equivalent to the category of contravariant functors from the fundamental groupoid of Conf(k, M) to C, where Conf(k, M) stands for the unordered configuration space of k points in M. As a consequence of this result, we show that the catego…
In this paper, we investigate the properties of the category of equivariant diagram spectra indexed on the category W_G of based G-spaces homeomorphic to finite G-CW-complexes for a compact Lie group G. Using the machinery of Mandell, May, Schwede, and Shipley, we show that there is a "stable model structure" on this category of diagram spectra which admits a monoidal Quillen equivalence to the category of orthogonal G-spectra. We construct a second "absolute stable model structure" which is Quillen equivalent to the "stable model structure". Our main result is a concrete identification of the…
There exists a canonical functor from the category of fibrant objects of a model category modulo cylinder homotopy to its homotopy category. We show that this functor is faithful under certain conditions, but not in general.
A classification is provided of functors, in particular polynomial ones, from a category with a zero object in which every object is a finite sum of copies of a generating object, into an abelian category. This classification is extended to include functors from a category with sums and a zero object, carrying a small, regular projective generator.
Voevodsky's derived category of motives is the main arena today for the study of algebraic cycles and motivic cohomology. In this paper we study whether the inclusions of three important subcategories of motives have a left or right adjoint. These adjoint functors are useful constructions when they exist, describing the best approximation to an arbitrary motive by a motive in a given subcategory. We find a fairly complete picture: some adjoint functors exist, including a few which were previously unexplored, while others do not exist because of the failure of finite generation for Chow groups …
Morphisms in the linear category A of Jacobi diagrams in handlebodies give rise to interesting contravariant functors on the category gr of finitely-generated free groups, encoding part of the composition structure of the category A. These functors correspond, via an equivalence of categories given by Powell, to functors given by beaded open Jacobi diagrams. We study the polynomiality of these functors and whether they are outer functors. These results are inspired by and generalize previous results obtained by Katada.
In this paper we present background results in enriched category theory and enriched model category theory necessary for developing model categories of enriched functors suitable for doing functor calculus.
For an abelian category, a category equivalent to its derived category is constructed by means of specific projective (injective) multicomplexes, the so-called homological resolutions.
We prove that Leibniz homology of Lie algebras can be described as functor homology in the category of linear functors from a category associated to the Lie operad.
For a finite group $G$, the so-called $G$-Mackey functors form an abelian category $M(G)$ that has many applications in the study of $G$-equivariant stable homotopy. One would expect that the derived category $D(M(G))$ would be similarly important as the "homological" counterpart of the $G$-equivariant stable homotopy category. It turns out that this is not so -- $D(M(G))$ is pathological in many respects. We propose and study a replacement for $D(M(G))$, a certain triangulated category $DM(G)$ of "derived Mackey functors" that contains $M(G)$ but is different from $D(M(G))$. We show that stan…
For any finite group G, we define a bivariant functor from the Dress category of finite G-sets to the conjugation biset category, whose objects are subgroups of G, and whose morphisms are generated by certain bifree bisets. Any additive functor from the conjugation biset category to abelian groups yields a Mackey functor by composition. We characterize the Mackey functors which arise in this way.
The homotopy theory of small functors is a useful tool for studying various questions in homotopy theory. In this paper, we develop the homotopy theory of small functors from spectra to spectra, and study its interplay with Spanier-Whitehead duality and enriched representability in the dual category of spectra. We note that the Spanier-Whitehead duality functor $D\colon \mathrm{Sp}\rightarrow \mathrm{Sp}^{\mathrm{op}}$ factors through the category of small functors from spectra to spectra and construct a new model structure on the category of small functors, which is Quillen equivalent to $\ma…
An approach to identify the normal subgroups determined by ideals in free group rings with the help of the derived functors of non-additive functors is explored. A similar approach, i.e., via derived functors, for computing limits of functors from the category of free presentations to the category of abelian groups, arising from commutator structure of free groups, is also discussed.
We show that every small homotopy functor from spectra to spectra is weakly equivalent to a filtered colimit of representable functors represented in cofibrant spectra. Moreover, we present this classification as a Quillen equivalence of the category of small functors from spectra to spectra equipped with the homotopy model structure and the opposite of the pro-category of spectra with the strict model structure.
We give, for every finite group G, a combinatorial description of the ring of G-Witt vectors on a polynomial algebra over the integers. Using this description we show that the functor, which takes a ring with trivial action of G to its ring of Witt vectors, coincides with the left adjoint of the algebraic functor from the category of G-Tambara functors to the category of rings with an action of G.
This paper presents a description of the fourth dimension quotient, using the theory of limits of functors from the category of free presentations of a given group to the category of abelian groups. A functorial description of a quotient of the third Fox subgroup is given and, as a consequence, an identification (not involving an isolator) of the third Fox subgroup is obtained. It is shown that the limit over the category of free representations of the third Fox quotient represents the composite of two derived quadratic functors.
We compute the spectrum of the category of derived Mackey functors (in the sense of Kaledin) for all finite groups. We find that this space captures precisely the top and bottom layers (i.e. the height infinity and height zero parts) of the spectrum of the equivariant stable homotopy category. Due to this truncation of the chromatic information, we are able to obtain a complete description of the spectrum for all finite groups, despite our incomplete knowledge of the topology of the spectrum of the equivariant stable homotopy category. From a different point of view, we show that the spectrum …
