We define the Grothendieck-Witt category over a fixed ground ring. In order to study the structure of this category, we introduce the general theory of Gysin functors and their associated categories of correspondences. The latter generalizes the familiar construction of the Burnside category over a finite group. We prove various results about the structure of these correspondence categories, and we prove a "recognition theorem" loosely saying that these correspondence categories naturally show up in situations where one has both a symmetric monoidal structure and transfers. Returning to the Grothendieck-Witt category, a few examples are worked out.
In this note, we show that the units in Grothendieck-Witt rings extend to an unramified strictly A^1-invariant sheaf of abelian groups on the category of smooth schemes. This implies that there is an A^1-local classifying space of spherical fibrations.
We establish some structural results for the Witt and Grothendieck-Witt groups of schemes over $\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$, including homotopy invariance for Witt groups and a formula for the Witt and Grothendieck-Witt groups of punctured affine spaces over a scheme. All these results hold for singular schemes and at the level of spectra.
We construct a Grothendieck-Witt space for any stable infinity category with duality. If we apply our construction to perfect complexes over a commutative ring in which 2 is invertible we recover the classical Grothendieck-Witt space. Our Grothendieck-Witt space is a grouplike E-infinity space which is part of a genuine C_2-spectrum, the connective real K-theory spectrum.
We develop a higher semiadditive version of Grothendieck-Witt theory. We then apply the theory in the case of a finite field to study the higher semiadditive structure of the $K(1)$-local sphere at the prime $2$. As a further application, we compute and clarify certain power operations in the homotopy of the $K(1)$-local sphere.

The aim of these notes, originally intended as an appendix to a book on the foundations of equivariant cohomology, is to set up the formalism of the $G$-equivariant Poincaré duality for oriented $G$-manifolds, for any connected compact Lie group $G$, following the work of J.-L. Brylinski leading to the spectral sequence $$\mathop{\rm Extgr}\nolimits_{H_G}(H_{G,\rm c} (M),H_G)\Rightarrow H_{G}(M)[d_{M}]\,.$$ The equivariant Gysin functor $(\_)_!:=Ω_{G}(\_)\in\mathcal D^{+}(\mathord{\rm DGM}(H_{G}))$ (resp. $(\_)_{*}:=Ω_{G,\rm c}(\_)$) is then defined in the category of oriented $G$-manifolds an…
We describe chromatic localisations of genuine L-spectra of discrete rings and deduce that the purity property of $K(1)$-local $K$-theory of rings established by Bhatt-Clausen-Mathew also holds in Grothendieck-Witt theory. In addition, we collect some results on higher chromatic localisations of various L-theory spectra and their consequences for Grothendieck-Witt theory.
We prove a trace formula in stable motivic homotopy theory over a general base scheme, equating the trace of an endomorphism of a smooth proper scheme with the "Euler characteristic integral" of a certain cohomotopy class over its scheme of fixed points. When the base is a field and the fixed points are étale, we compute this integral in terms of Morel's identification of the ring of endomorphisms of the motivic sphere spectrum with the Grothendieck-Witt ring. In particular, we show that the Euler characteristic of an étale algebra corresponds to the class of its trace form in the Grothendieck…
We show that the Grothendieck-Witt and Witt groups of smooth complex cellular varieties can be identified with their topological KO-groups. As an application, we deduce the values of the Witt groups of all irreducible hermitian symmetric spaces, including smooth complex quadrics, spinor varieties and symplectic Grassmannians.
This survey covers some of the recent developments on noncommutative motives and their applications. Among other topics, we compute the additive invariants of relative cellular spaces and orbifolds; prove Kontsevich's semi-simplicity conjecture; prove a far-reaching noncommutative generalization of the Weil conjectures; prove Grothendieck's standard conjectures of type C+ and D, Voevodsky's nilpotence conjecture, and Tate's conjecture, in several new cases; embed the (cohomological) Brauer group into secondary K-theory; construct a noncommutative motivic Gysin triangle; compute the localizing …
This paper is the first in a series in which we offer a new framework for hermitian K-theory in the realm of stable $\infty$-categories. Our perspective yields solutions to a variety of classical problems involving Grothendieck-Witt groups of rings and clarifies the behaviour of these invariants when 2 is not invertible. In this article we lay the foundations of our approach by considering Lurie's notion of a Poincaré $\infty$-category, which permits an abstract counterpart of unimodular forms called Poincaré objects. We analyse the special cases of hyperbolic and metabolic Poincaré objects, a…
We relate the recognition principle for infinite $\mathbf P^1$-loop spaces to the theory of motivic fundamental classes of Déglise, Jin, and Khan. We first compare two kinds of transfers that are naturally defined on cohomology theories represented by motivic spectra: the framed transfers given by the recognition principle, which arise from Voevodsky's computation of the Nisnevish sheaf associated with $\mathbf A^n/(\mathbf A^n-0)$, and the Gysin transfers defined via Verdier's deformation to the normal cone. We then introduce the category of finite E-correspondences for E a motivic ring spect…
