We establish some structural results for the Witt and Grothendieck-Witt groups of schemes over $\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$, including homotopy invariance for Witt groups and a formula for the Witt and Grothendieck-Witt groups of punctured affine spaces over a scheme. All these results hold for singular schemes and at the level of spectra.
Grothendieck-Witt spectra represent higher Grothendieck-Witt groups and higher Hermitian K-theory in particular. A description of the Grothendieck-Witt spectrum of a finite dimensional projective bundle $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{E})$ over a base scheme $X$ is given in terms of the Grothendieck-Witt spectra of the base, using the dg category of strictly perfect complexes, provided that $X$ is a scheme over $\text{Spec }\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$ and satisfies the resolution property, e.g. if $X$ has an ample family of line bundles.
Let k be a perfect field of characteristic different from two. We show that the filtration on the Grothendieck-Witt group GW(k) induced by the slice filtration for the sphere spectrum in the motivic stable homotopy category is the I-adic filtration, where I is the augmentation ideal in GW(k).
We prove localization and Zariski-Mayer-Vietoris for higher Grothendieck-Witt groups, alias hermitian $K$-groups, of schemes admitting an ample family of line-bundles. No assumption on the characteristic is needed, and our schemes can be singular. Along the way, we prove additivity, fibration and approximation theorems for the hermitian $K$-theory of exact categories with weak equivalences and duality.
We establish new structures on Grothendieck-Witt rings, including a GW(k)-module structure on the unit group GW(k)^x and a presentation of \ul{GW}^x as an infinite Gm-loop sheaf. Even though our constructions are motivated by speculations in stable A1-homotopy theory, our arguments are purely algebraic.
We study the algebraic $K$-theory and Grothendieck-Witt theory of proto-exact categories of vector bundles over monoid schemes. Our main results are the complete description of the algebraic $K$-theory space of an integral monoid scheme $X$ in terms of its Picard group $\operatorname{Pic}(X)$ and pointed monoid of regular functions $Γ(X, \mathcal{O}_X)$ and a description of the Grothendieck-Witt space of $X$ in terms of an additional involution on $\operatorname{Pic}(X)$. We also prove space-level projective bundle formulae in both settings.
The category of effective Grothendieck-Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$ (and Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^W_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$) by Voevodsky-Suslin method starting with some category of GW-correspondences (and Witt-correspondences) over a perfect field $k$, $char\,k\neq 2$, is defined. The functor $M^{GW}_{eff}\colon Sm_k\to \mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$ of Grothendieck-Witt-motives of smooth varieties is computed and it is proved that for any smooth scheme $X$ and homotopy invariant sheave with GW-transfers $F$ $$ Hom_{\mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)}(M^{GW}_{ef…
We prove some results connecting the zeta functions of varieties over finite fields with the big Witt ring over $\mathbb Z$. We explore relations with motivic measures and a classical formula of Macdonald on invariants of symmetric products of a variety.
We prove a trace formula in stable motivic homotopy theory over a general base scheme, equating the trace of an endomorphism of a smooth proper scheme with the "Euler characteristic integral" of a certain cohomotopy class over its scheme of fixed points. When the base is a field and the fixed points are étale, we compute this integral in terms of Morel's identification of the ring of endomorphisms of the motivic sphere spectrum with the Grothendieck-Witt ring. In particular, we show that the Euler characteristic of an étale algebra corresponds to the class of its trace form in the Grothendieck…
We show that the Grothendieck-Witt and Witt groups of smooth complex cellular varieties can be identified with their topological KO-groups. As an application, we deduce the values of the Witt groups of all irreducible hermitian symmetric spaces, including smooth complex quadrics, spinor varieties and symplectic Grassmannians.
We prove some new cases of the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture for classical groups. This is based on a new construction of the Gersten-Witt complex for Witt groups of Azumaya algebras with involution on regular semilocal rings, with explicit second residue maps; the complex is shown to be exact when the ring is of dimension $\le 2$ (or $\le 4$, with additional hypotheses on the algebra with involution). Note that we do not assume that the ring contains a field.
The main purpose of this article is to define a quadratic analog of the Chern character, the so-called Borel character, which identifies rational higher Grothendieck-Witt groups with a sum of rational MW-motivic cohomologies and rational motivic cohomologies. We also discuss the notion of ternary laws due to Walter, a quadratic analog of formal group laws, and compute what we call the additive ternary laws, associated with MW-motivic cohomology. Finally, we provide an application of the Borel character by showing that the Milnor-Witt K-theory of a field F embeds into suitable higher Grothendie…
We define push-forwards for Witt groups of schemes along proper morphisms, using Grothendieck duality theory. This article is an application of results of the authors on tensor-triangulated closed categories to such structures on some derived categories of schemes together with classical derived functors.
A topologically-invariant and additive homology class is mostly not a natural transformation as it is. In this paper we discuss turning such a homology class into a natural transformation; i.e., a "categorification" of it. In a general categorical set-up we introduce a generalized relative Grothendieck group from a cospan of functors of categories and also consider a categorification of additive invariants on objects. As an example, we obtain a general theory of characteristic homology classes of singular varieties.
We construct a generalization of the Dolbeault-Grothendieck resolution on a singular complex space. The same construction yields, for each morphism of analytic spaces, a pullback mapping between the respective Dolbeault-Grothendieck resolutions. As in the smooth case, the terms of the resolution are soft sheaves with stalks which are flat with respect to the sheaf of holomorphic sections. If, moreover, the complex space $(X,\mathcal{O}_{X})$ is countable at infinity then the global section spaces of the terms of the resolution are endowed with natural Fréchet-Schwarz topologies which induce th…
We study the singular Bott-Chern classes introduced by Bismut, Gillet and Soule. Singular Bott-Chern classes are the main ingredient to define direct images for closed immersions in arithmetic K-theory. In this paper we give an axiomatic definition of a theory of singular Bott-Chern classes, study their properties, and classify all possible theories of this kind. We identify the theory defined by Bismut, Gillet and Soule as the only one that satisfies the additional condition of being homogeneous. We include a proof of the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for closed immersions that…
We propose a strengthening of the Grothendieck--Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for the local Picard group, prove some special cases and derive several consequences to the deformation theory of log canonical singularities. Version 2: Main conjecture changed, following recent results of Bhatt and de Jong. Small changes to the proofs.
In this paper we study Schlichting's K-theory groups of the Buchweitz-Orlov singularity category $\mathcal{D}^{sg}(X)$ of a quasi-projective algebraic scheme $X/k$ with applications to Algebraic K-theory. We prove that for isolated quotient singularities $\mathrm{K}_0(\mathcal{D}^{sg}(X))$ is finite torsion, and that $\mathrm{K}_1(\mathcal{D}^{sg}(X)) = 0$. One of the main applications is that algebraic varieties with isolated quotient singularities satisfy rational Poincare duality on the level of the Grothendieck group; this allows computing the Grothendieck group of such varieties in terms …
We prove that for a normal projective variety $X$ in characteristic 0, and a base-point free ample line bundle $L$ on it, the restriction map of divisor class groups $\Cl(X)\to \Cl(Y)$ is an isomorphism for a general member $Y\in |L|$ provided that $\dim{X}\geq 4$. This is a generalization of the Grothendieck-Lefschetz Theorem, for divisor class groups of singular varieties.
We show the $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-Euler characteristic of a smooth, projective scheme over a characteristic $0$ field is represented by its Hochschild complex together with a canonical bilinear form, and give an exposition of the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-Euler characteristic $χ^{c}_{\mathbb{A}^{1}}: K_0(\mathbf{Var}_{k}) \to \text{GW}(k)$ from the Grothendieck group of varieties to the Grothendieck--Witt group of bilinear forms. We also provide example computations.
This thesis gives a complete description of the Grothendieck group and divisor class group for large families of two and three dimensional singularities. The main results presented throughout, and summarised in Theorem 8.1.1, give an explicit description of the Grothendieck group and class group of Kleinian singularities, their deformations, and compound Du Val (cDV) singularities in a variety of settings. For such rings R, the main results assert that there exists an isomorphism between $G_0(R)$ and $\mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathrm{Cl}(R)$, and the class group is explicitly presented. More precisel…
Over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p > 0$, we construct a ``Witt vector cohomology with compact supports'' for separated $k$-schemes of finite type, extending (after tensorisation with $\mathbb{Q}$) the classical theory for proper $k$-schemes. We define a canonical morphism from rigid cohomology with compact supports to Witt vector cohomology with compact supports, and we prove that it provides an identification between the latter and the slope $< 1$ part of the former. Over a finite field, this allows one to compute congruences for the number of rational points in special examples. I…
We compute the Chow-Witt rings of split quadrics over a field of characteristic not two. We even determine the full bigraded I-cohomology and Milnor-Witt cohomology rings, including twists by line bundles. The results on I-cohomology corroborate the general philosophy that I-cohomology is an algebro-geometric version of singular cohomology of real varieties: our explicit calculations confirm that the I-cohomology ring of a split quadric over the reals is isomorphic to the singular cohomology ring of the space of its real points.
We prove a conjecture of A. S. Buch concerning the structure constants of the Grothendieck ring of a flag variety with respect to its basis of Schubert structure sheaves. For this, we show that the coefficients in this basis of the structure sheaf of any subvariety with rational singularities, have alternating signs. Equivalently, the class of the dualizing sheaf of such a subvariety is a nonnegative combination of classes of dualizing sheaves of Schubert varieties.
Let $f:\mathbb{C}^{n+1} \to \mathbb{C}$ be a germ of hypersurface with isolated singularity. One can associate to $f$ a polarized variation of mixed Hodge structure $\mathcal{H}$ over the punctured disc, where the Hodge filtration is the limit Hodge filtration of W. Schmid and J. Steenbrink. By the work of M. Saito and P. Deligne the VMHS associated to cohomologies of the fibers of $f$ can be extended over the degenerate point $0$ of disc. The new fiber obtained in this way is isomorphic to the module of relative differentials of $f$ denoted $Ω_f$. A mixed Hodge structure can be defined on $Ω_…
Let $R$ be a noetherian normal domain. We investigate when $R$ admits a faithful module whose endomorphism ring has finite global dimension. This can be viewed as a non-commutative desingularization of $\Spec(R)$. We show that the existence of such modules forces stringent conditions on the Grothendieck group of finitely generated modules over $R$. In some cases those conditions are enough to imply that $\Spec(R)$ has only rational singularities.
Let X be a projective hypersurface in P_k^n of degree d <= n. In this paper we study the relation between the class [X] in K_0(Var_k) and the existence of k-rational points. Using elementary geometric methods we show, for some particular X, that X(k) is nonempty if and only if [X] is equivalent to 1 modulo the class of the affine line in K_0(Var_k). More precisely we consider the following cases: a union of hyperplanes, a quadric, a cubic hypersurface with a singular k-rational point, and a quartic which is a union of two quadrics one of which being smooth.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, $W$ the ring of Witt vectors over $k$ and ${R}$ the integral closure of $W$ in the algebraic closure ${\bar{K}}$ of $K:=Frac(W)$; let moreover $X$ be a smooth, connected and projective scheme over $W$ and $H$ a relatively very ample line bundle over $X$. We prove that when $dim(X/{W})\geq 2$ there exists an integer $d_0$, depending only on $X$, such that for any $d\geq d_0$, any $Y\in |H^{\otimes d}|$ connected and smooth over ${W}$ and any $y\in Y({W})$ the natural ${R}$-morphism of fundamental group schemes $π_1(Y_R,y_R)\to π_…
We consider the "limiting behavior" of *discriminants*, by which we mean informally the locus in some parameter space of some type of object where the objects have certain singularities. We focus on the space of partially labeled points on a variety X, and linear systems on X. These are connected --- we use the first to understand the second. We describe their classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties, as the number of points gets large, or as the line bundle gets very positive. They stabilize in an appropriate sense, and their stabilization is given in terms of motivic zeta values. Motiva…
Based on the Brieskorn-Slodowy-Grothendieck diagram, we write the holomorphic structures (or filtrations) of the ADE Lie algebra bundles over the corresponding type ADE flag varieties, over the cotangent bundles of these flag varieties, and over the corresponding type $ADE$ singular surfaces. The main tool is the cohomology of line bundles over flag varieties and their cotangent bundles.
We construct explicit geometric models for and compute the fundamental groups of all plane sextics with simple singularities only and with at least one type $\bold E_8$ singular point. In particular, we discover four new sextics with nonabelian fundamental groups; two of them are irreducible. The groups of the two irreducible sextics found are finite. The principal tool used is the reduction to trigonal curves and Grothendieck's {\it dessins d'enfants}
