An iterated function system $Φ$ consisting of contractive similarity mappings has a unique attractor $F \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ which is invariant under the action of the system, as was shown by Hutchinson [Hut]. This paper shows how the action of the function system naturally produces a tiling $\mathcal{T}$ of the convex hull of the attractor. More precisely, it tiles the complement of the attractor within its convex hull. These tiles form a collection of sets whose geometry is typically much simpler than that of $F$, yet retains key information about both $F$ and $Φ$. In particular, the tiles encode all the scaling data of $Φ$. We give the construction, along with some examples and applications. The tiling $\mathcal{T}$ is the foundation for the higher-dimensional extension of the theory of \emph{complex dimensions} which was developed for the case $d=1$ in ``Fractal Geometry, Complex Dimensions, and Zeros of Zeta Functions,'' by Michel L. Lapidus and Machiel van Frankenhuijsen.
A new method for constructing self-referential tilings of Euclidean space from a graph directed iterated function system, based on a combinatorial structure we call a pre-tree, is introduced. In the special case that we refer to as balanced, the resulting tilings have a finite set of prototiles, are quasiperiodic but not periodic, and are self-similar. A necessary and sufficient condition for two balanced tilings to be congruent is provided.
Starting with a substitution tiling, we demonstrate a method for constructing infinitely many new substitution tilings. Each of these new tilings is derived from a graph iterated function system and the tiles have fractal boundary. We show that each of the new tilings is mutually locally derivable to the original tiling. Thus, at the tiling space level, the new substitution rules are expressing geometric and combinatorial, rather than topological, features of the original. Our method is easy to apply to particular substitution tilings, permits experimentation, and can be used to construct bord…
It is proved that every pseudo-self-affine tiling in R^d is mutually locally derivable with a self-affine tiling. A characterization of pseudo-self-similar tilings in terms of derived Voronoi tessellations is a corollary. Previously, these results were obtained in the planar case, jointly with Priebe Frank. The new approach is based on the theory of graph-directed iterated function systems and substitution Delone sets developed by Lagarias and Wang.
We consider self-affine tilings in the Euclidean space and the associated tiling dynamical systems, namely, the translation action on the orbit closure of the given tiling. We investigate the spectral properties of the system. It turns out that the presence of the discrete component depends on the algebraic properties of the eigenvalues of the expansion matrix $ϕ$ for the tiling. Assuming that $ϕ$ is diagonalizable over $\C$ and all its eigenvalues are algebraic conjugates of the same multiplicity, we show that the dynamical system has a relatively dense discrete spectrum if and only if it is …
Overlap coincidence in a self-affine tiling in $\R^d$ is equivalent to pure point dynamical spectrum of the tiling dynamical system. We interpret the overlap coincidence in the setting of substitution Delone set in $\R^d$ and find an efficient algorithm to check the pure point dynamical spectrum. This algorithm is easy to implement into a computer program. We give the program and apply it to several examples. In the course the proof of the algorithm, we show a variant of the conjecture of Urbański (Solomyak \cite{Solomyak:08}) on the Hausdorff dimension of the boundaries of fractal tiles.
We study the repetition of patches in self-affine tilings in R^d. In particular, we study the existence and non-existence of arithmetic progressions. We first show that an arithmetic condition of the expansion map for a self-affine tiling implies the non-existence of certain one-dimensional arithmetic progressions. Next, we show that the existence of full-rank infinite arithmetic progressions, pure discrete dynamical spectrum, and limit periodicity are all equivalent for a certain class of self-affine tilings. We finish by giving a complete picture for the existence/non-existence of full-rank …
This paper examines thresholds for certain properties of the attractor of a general one-parameter affine family of iterated functions systems. As the parameter increases, the iterated function system becomes less contractive, and the attractor evolves. Thresholds are studied for the following properties: the existence of an attractor, the connectivity of the attractor, and the existence of non-empty interior of the attractor. Also discussed are transition phenomena between existence and non-existence of an attractor.
New tilings of certain subsets of $\mathbb{R}^{M}$ are studied, tilings associated with fractal blow-ups of certain similitude iterated function systems (IFS). For each such IFS with attractor satisfying the open set condition, our construction produces a usually infinite family of tilings that satisfy the following properties: (1) the prototile set is finite; (2) the tilings are repetitive (quasiperiodic); (3) each family contains self-similartilings, usually infinitely many; and (4) when the IFS is rigid in an appropriate sense, the tiling has no non-trivial symmetry; in particular the tilin…
In this note we give a simple sufficient condition for an affine iterated function system to admit an invariant affine subspace persistently with respect to changes in the translation parameters. This yields further examples of tuples of contracting linear maps which do not satisfy the conclusions of Falconer's theorem on the Hausdorff dimension of almost every self-affine set. We also obtain new examples of iterated function systems of similarity transformations which cannot satisfy the open set condition for any choice of translation parameters, and resolve a related question of Peres and So…
By the algorithm implemented in the paper [2] by Akiyama-Lee and some of its predecessors, we have examined the pure discreteness of the spectrum for all irreducible Pisot substitutions of trace less than or equal to $2$, and some cases of planar tilings generated by boundary substitutions due to the paper [17] by Kenyon.
In 1988 K. Falconer introduced a formula which predicts the value of the Hausdorff dimension of the attractor of an affine iterated function system. The value given by this formula -- sometimes referred to as the affinity dimension -- is known to agree with the Hausdorff dimension both generically and in an increasing range of explicit cases. It is however a nontrivial problem to estimate the numerical value of the affinity dimension for specific iterated function systems. In this article we substantially extend an earlier result of M. Pollicott and P. Vytnova on the computation of the affinit…
In this article we investigate the pressure function and affinity dimension for iterated function systems associated to the "box-like" self-affine fractals investigated by D.-J. Feng, Y. Wang and J.M. Fraser. Combining previous results of V. Yu. Protasov, A. Käenmäki and the author we obtain an explicit formula for the pressure function which makes it straightforward to compute the affinity dimension of box-like self-affine sets. We also prove a variant of this formula which allows the computation of a modified singular value pressure function defined by J.M. Fraser. We give some explicit exam…
A self-affine tiling of a compact set G of positive Lebesgue measure is its partition to parallel shifts of a compact set which is affinely similar to G. We find all polyhedral sets (unions of finitely many convex polyhedra) that admit self-affine tilings. It is shown that in R^d there exist an infinite family of such polyhedral sets, not affinely equivalent to each other. A special attention is paid to an important particular case when the matrix of affine similarity and the translation vectors are integer. Applications to the approximation theory and to the functional analysis are discussed.
We consider self-affine tilings in $\R^n$ with expansion matrix $ϕ$ and address the question which matrices $ϕ$ can arise this way. In one dimension, $λ$ is an expansion factor of a self-affine tiling if and only if $|λ|$ is a Perron number, by a result of Lind. In two dimensions, when $ϕ$ is a similarity, we can speak of a complex expansion factor, and there is an analogous necessary condition, due to Thurston: if a complex $λ$ is an expansion factor of a self-similar tiling, then it is a complex Perron number. We establish a necessary condition for $ϕ$ to be an expansion matrix for any $n$, …
A classical theorem of Hutchinson asserts that if an iterated function system acts on $\mathbb{R}^d$ by similitudes and satisfies the open set condition then it admits a unique self-similar measure with Hausdorff dimension equal to the dimension of the attractor. In the class of measures on the attractor which arise as the projections of shift-invariant measures on the coding space, this self-similar measure is the unique measure of maximal dimension. In the context of affine iterated function systems it is known that there may be multiple shift-invariant measures of maximal dimension if the l…
A simple, yet unifying method is provided for the construction of tilings by tiles obtained from the attractor of an iterated function system (IFS). Many examples appearing in the literature in ad hoc ways, as well as new examples, can be constructed by this method. These tilings can be used to extend a fractal transformation defined on the attractor of a contractive IFS to a fractal transformation on the entire space upon which the IFS acts.
The eigenvalue problem for a linear function L centers on solving the eigen-equation Lx = rx. This paper generalizes the eigenvalue problem from a single linear function to an iterated function system F consisting of possibly an infinite number of linear or affine functions. The eigen-equation becomes F(X) = rX, where r>0 is real, X is a compact set, and F(X)is the union of f(X), for f in F. The main result is that an irreducible, linear iterated function system F has a unique eigenvalue r equal to the joint spectral radius of the functions in F and a corresponding eigenset S that is centrally…
A well-known theorem of J.E. Hutchinson states that if an iterated function system consists of similarity transformations and satisfies the open set condition then its attractor supports a self-similar measure with Hausdorff dimension equal to the similarity dimension. In this article we prove the following result which may be regarded as a form of partial converse: if an iterated function system consists of invertible affine transformations whose linear parts do not preserve a common invariant subspace, and its attractor supports a self-affine measure with Hausdorff dimension equal to the aff…
We investigate the Hölder geometry of curves generated by iterated function systems (IFS) in a complete metric space. A theorem of Hata from 1985 asserts that every connected attractor of an IFS is locally connected and path-connected. We give a quantitative strengthening of Hata's theorem. First we prove that every connected attractor of an IFS is $(1/s)$-Hölder path-connected, where $s$ is the similarity dimension of the IFS. Then we show that every connected attractor of an IFS is parameterized by a $(1/α)$-Hölder curve for all $α>s$. At the endpoint, $α=s$, a theorem of Remes from 1998 alr…
We introduce a duality for Affine Iterated Function Systems (AIFS) which is naturally motivated by group duality in the context of traditional harmonic analysis. Our affine systems yield fractals defined by iteration of contractive affine mappings. We build a duality for such systems by scaling in two directions: fractals in the small by contractive iterations, and fractals in the large by recursion involving iteration of an expansive matrix. By a fractal in the small we mean a compact attractor X supporting Hutchinson's canonical measure mu, and we ask when mu is a spectral measure, i.e., whe…
We study the attractor of Iterated Function Systems composed of infinitely many affine, homogeneous maps. In the special case of second generation IFS, defined herein, we conjecture that the attractor consists of a finite number of non-overlapping intervals. Numerical techniques are described to test this conjecture, and a partial rigorous result in this direction is proven.
We give several different geometric characterizations of the situation in which the parallel set $F_ε$ of a self-similar set $F$ can be described by the inner $ε$-parallel set $T_{-ε}$ of the associated canonical tiling $\mathcal T$, in the sense of \cite{SST}. For example, $F_ε=T_{-ε} \cup C_ε$ if and only if the boundary of the convex hull $C$ of $F$ is a subset of $F$, or if the boundary of $E$, the unbounded portion of the complement of $F$, is the boundary of a convex set. In the characterized situation, the tiling allows one to obtain a tube formula for $F$, i.e., an expression for the v…
We use the self-similar tilings constructed by the second author in "Canonical self-affine tilings by iterated function systems" to define a generating function for the geometry of a self-similar set in Euclidean space. This tubular zeta function encodes scaling and curvature properties related to the complement of the fractal set, and the associated system of mappings. This allows one to obtain the complex dimensions of the self-similar tiling as the poles of the tubular zeta function and hence develop a tube formula for self-similar tilings in \$\mathbb{R}^d$. The resulting power series in $…
We present a new method to calculate the Hausdorff dimension of a certain class of fractals: boundaries of self-affine tiles. Among the interesting aspects are that even if the affine contraction underlying the iterated function system is not conjugated to a similarity we obtain an upper- and lower-bounds for its Hausdorff dimension. In fact, we obtain the exact value for the dimension if the moduli of the eigenvalues of the underlying affine contraction are all equal (this includes Jordan blocks). The tiles we discuss play an important role in the theory of wavelets. We calculate the dimensio…
In this paper we study random iterated function systems. Our main result gives sufficient conditions for an analogue of a well known theorem due to Khintchine from Diophantine approximation to hold almost surely for stochastically self-similar and self-affine random iterated function systems.
In the first section we review recent results on the harmonic analysis of fractals generated by iterated function systems with emphasis on spectral duality. Classical harmonic analysis is typically based on groups whereas the fractals are most often not groups. We show that nonetheless those fractals that come from iteration of affine mappings in R^d have a spectral duality which is instead based on approximation and a certain dual affine system on the Fourier transform side. The present work is based on iteration of frame estimates (which have been studied earlier for regions in R^d). Our emp…
We prove that certain families of homogenous affine iterated function systems in $\mathbb{R}^d$ have the property that the open set condition and the existence of exact overlaps both occur densely in the space of translation parameters. These examples demonstrate that in the theorems of Falconer and Jordan-Pollicott-Simon on the almost sure dimensions of self-affine sets and measures, the set of exceptional translation parameters can be a dense set. The proof combines results from the literature on self-affine tilings of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with an adaptation of a classic argument of Erdős on the s…
We consider a class of planar self-affine sets which we call "box-like". A box-like self-affine set is the attractor of an iterated function system (IFS) of affine maps where the image of the unit square, [0,1]^2, under arbitrary compositions of the maps is a rectangle with sides parallel to the axes. This class contains the Bedford-McMullen carpets and the generalisations thereof considered by Lalley-Gatzouras, Barański and Feng-Wang as well as many other sets. In particular, we allow the mappings in the IFS to have non-trivial rotational and reflectional components. Assuming a rectangular op…
