A self-affine tiling of a compact set G of positive Lebesgue measure is its partition to parallel shifts of a compact set which is affinely similar to G. We find all polyhedral sets (unions of finitely many convex polyhedra) that admit self-affine tilings. It is shown that in R^d there exist an infinite family of such polyhedral sets, not affinely equivalent to each other. A special attention is paid to an important particular case when the matrix of affine similarity and the translation vectors are integer. Applications to the approximation theory and to the functional analysis are discussed.
We show that every tiling of a convex set in the Euclidean plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ by equilateral triangles of mutually different sizes contains arbitrarily small tiles. The proof is purely elementary up to the discussion of one family of tilings of the full plane $\mathbb{R}^2$, which is based on a surprising connection to a random walk on a directed graph.
Cao & Yuan obtained a Blichfeldt-type result for the vertex set of the edge-to-edge tiling of the plane by regular hexagons. Observing that every Archimedean tiling is the union of translates of a fixed lattice, we take a more general viewpoint and investigate basic questions for such point sets about the homogeneous and inhomogeneous problem in the Geometry of Numbers. The Archimedean tilings nicely exemplify our results.
For a nonempty polyhedral set $P\subset \mathbb R^d$, let $\mathcal F(P)$ denote the set of faces of $P$, and let $N(P,F)$ be the normal cone of $P$ at the nonempty face $F\in\mathcal F(P)$. We prove that the function $\sum_{F\in\mathcal F(P)}(-1)^{\text{dim} F} 1_{F-N(P,F)}$ equals $1$ if $P$ is bounded, or $0$ if $P$ is unbounded and line-free. Previously, this formula was known to hold everywhere outside some exceptional set of Lebesgue measure $0$ or for polyhedral cones. The case of a not necessarily line-free polyhedral set is also covered by our general theorem.
We study Minkowski contents and fractal curvatures of arbitrary self-similar tilings (constructed on a feasible open set of an IFS) and the general relations to the corresponding functionals for self-similar sets. In particular, we characterize the situation, when these functionals coincide. In this case, the Minkowski content and the fractal curvatures of a self-similar set can be expressed completely in terms of the volume function or curvature data, respectively, of the generator of the tiling. In special cases such formulas have been obtained recently using tube formulas and complex dimens…
We study empirical statistical and gap distributions of several important tilings of the plane. In particular, we consider the slope distributions, the angle distributions, pair correlation, squared-distance pair correlation, angle gap distributions, and slope gap distributions for the Ammann Chair tiling, the recently discovered fifteenth pentagonal tiling, and a few pertinent tilings related to these famous examples. We also consider the spatial statistics of generalized Ulam sets in two dimensions. Additionally, we carefully prove a tight asymptotic formula for the time steps in which Ulam …
The Taylor-Socolar tilings are regular hexagonal tilings of the plane but are distinguished in being comprised of hexagons of two colors in an aperiodic way. We place the Taylor-Socolar tilings into an algebraic setting which allows one to see them directly as model sets and to understand the corresponding tiling hull along with its generic and singular parts. Although the tilings were originally obtained by matching rules and by substitution, our approach sets the tilings into the framework of a cut and project scheme and studies how the tilings relate to the corresponding internal space. The…
In the study of aperiodic order and mathematical models of quasicrystals, questions regarding equivalence relations on Delone sets naturally arise. This work is dedicated to the bounded displacement (BD) equivalence relation, and especially to results concerning instances of non-equivalence. We present a general condition for two Delone sets to be BD non-equivalent, and apply our result to Delone sets associated with tilings of Euclidean space. First we consider substitution tilings, and exhibit a substitution matrix associated with two distinct substitution rules. The first rule generates onl…
In this paper we focus on the tropical convex hull of convex sets and polyhedral complexes. We give a vertex description of the tropical convex hull of a line segment and a ray. %in \RR^{n+1}/\RR\mathbf{1}. Next we show that tropical convex hull and ordinary convex hull commute in two dimensions and characterize tropically convex polyhedra in any dimension. %$\mathbb{R}^3/\mathbb {R}\mathbf{1}$. Finally we show that the dimension of a tropically convex fan depends on the coordinates of its rays and give a lower bound on the degree of a fan tropical curve using only tropical techniques.
We define a general framework that includes objects such as tilings, Delone sets, functions and measures. We define local derivability and mutual local derivability (MLD) between any two of these objects in order to describe their interrelation. This is a generalization of the local derivability and MLD (or S-MLD) for tilings and Delone sets which are used in the literature, under a mild assumption. We show that several canonical maps in aperiodic order send an object P to one that is MLD with P. Moreover we show that, for an object P and a class S of objects, a mild condition on them assures …
The problem of determining finite subsets of characteristic planar model sets (mathematical quasicrystals) $\varLambda$, called cyclotomic model sets, by parallel $X$-rays is considered. Here, an $X$-ray in direction $u$ of a finite subset of the plane gives the number of points in the set on each line parallel to $u$. For practical reasons, only $X$-rays in $\varLambda$-directions, i.e., directions parallel to non-zero elements of the difference set $\varLambda - \varLambda$, are permitted. In particular, by combining methods from algebraic number theory and convexity, it is shown that the co…
Model sets (or cut and project sets) provide a familiar and commonly used method of constructing and studying nonperiodic point sets. Here we extend this method to situations where the internal spaces are no longer Euclidean, but instead spaces with p-adic topologies or even with mixed Euclidean/p-adic topologies. We show that a number of well known tilings precisely fit this form, including the chair tiling and the Robinson square tilings. Thus the scope of the cut and project formalism is considerably larger than is usually supposed. Applying the powerful consequences of model sets we derive…
We say that two sets $S,T\subset\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ are chord separated if there does not exist a cyclically ordered quadruple $a,b,c,d$ of integers satisfying $a,c\in S-T$ and $b,d\in T-S$. This is a weaker version of Leclerc and Zelevinsky's weak separation. We show that every maximal by inclusion collection of pairwise chord separated sets is also maximal by size. Moreover, we prove that such collections are precisely vertex label collections of fine zonotopal tilings of the three-dimensional cyclic zonotope. In our construction, plabic graphs and square moves appear naturally as horizontal se…
The paper establishes an equivalence between pure point diffraction and certain types of model sets, called inter model sets, in the context of substitution point sets and substitution tilings. The key ingredients are a new type of coincidence condition in substitution point sets, which we call algebraic coincidence, and the use of a recent characterization of model sets through dynamical systems associated with the point sets or tilings.
We consider a class of cut-and-project sets $Λ= Λ_F \times \zahl$ in the plane. Let $L=Λ+w\real$, $w\in\real^2$, be a countable union of parallel lines. Then either (1) $L$ is a discrete family of lines, (2) $L$ is a dense subset of $\real^2$, or (3) each connected component of the closure of $L$ is homeomorphic to $[0,1] \times \real$.
We give several different geometric characterizations of the situation in which the parallel set $F_ε$ of a self-similar set $F$ can be described by the inner $ε$-parallel set $T_{-ε}$ of the associated canonical tiling $\mathcal T$, in the sense of \cite{SST}. For example, $F_ε=T_{-ε} \cup C_ε$ if and only if the boundary of the convex hull $C$ of $F$ is a subset of $F$, or if the boundary of $E$, the unbounded portion of the complement of $F$, is the boundary of a convex set. In the characterized situation, the tiling allows one to obtain a tube formula for $F$, i.e., an expression for the v…
The nature of this paper is twofold: On one hand, we will give a short introduction and overview of the theory of model sets in connection with nonperiodic substitution tilings and generalized Rauzy fractals. On the other hand, we will construct certain Rauzy fractals and a certain substitution tiling with interesting properties, and we will use a new approach to prove rigorously that the latter one arises from a model set. The proof will use a duality principle which will be described in detail for this example. This duality is mentioned as early as 1997 by Gelbrich in the context of iterated…
In a previous paper [arXiv:1006.3807], the authors obtained tube formulas for certain fractals under rather general conditions. Based on these formulas, we give here a characterization of Minkowski measurability of a certain class of self-similar tilings and self-similar sets. Under appropriate hypotheses, self-similar tilings with simple generators (more precisely, monophase generators) are shown to be Minkowski measurable if and only if the associated scaling zeta function is of nonlattice type. Under a natural geometric condition on the tiling, the result is transferred to the associated se…
In this paper we prove that, for any integer $d>0$, every linearly repetitive Delone set in the Euclidean $d$-space $\RR^d$ is equivalent, up to a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism, to the integer lattice $\ZZ^d$. In the particular case when the Delone set $X$ in $\RR^d$ comes from a primitive substitution tiling of $\RR^d$, we give a condition on the eigenvalues of the substitution matrix which implies the existence of a homeomorphism with bounded displacement from $X$ to the lattice lattice $λ\ZZ^d$ for some positive $λ$. This condition includes primitive Pisot substitution tilings but also concern…
It is proved that every pseudo-self-affine tiling in R^d is mutually locally derivable with a self-affine tiling. A characterization of pseudo-self-similar tilings in terms of derived Voronoi tessellations is a corollary. Previously, these results were obtained in the planar case, jointly with Priebe Frank. The new approach is based on the theory of graph-directed iterated function systems and substitution Delone sets developed by Lagarias and Wang.
It is well known that all cells of the Voronoi diagram of a Delaunay set are polytopes. For a finite point set, all these cells are still polyhedra. So the question arises, if this observation holds for all discrete point sets: Are always all Voronoi cells of an arbitrary, infinite discrete point set polyhedral? In this paper, an answer to this question will be given. It will be shown that all Voronoi cells of a discrete point set are polytopes if and only if every point of the point set is an inner point. Furthermore, the term of a locally finitely generated discrete point set will be introdu…
The Brattelli diagram associated with a given bicolored Dynkin-Coxeter graph of type $A_n$ determines planar fractal sets obtained by infinite dissections of a given triangle. All triangles appearing in the dissection process have angles that are multiples of $π/ (n+1).$ There are usually several possible infinite dissections compatible with a given $n$ but a given one makes use of $n/2$ triangle types if $n$ is even. Jones algebra with index $[ 4 \ \cos^2{π\over n+1}]^{-1}$ (values of the discrete range) act naturally on vector spaces associated with those fractal sets. Triangles of a given t…
