For every smooth (irreducible) cubic surface $S$ we give an explicit construction of a representative for each of the 72 equivalence classes of determinantal representations. Equivalence classes (under $\GL_3\times \GL_3$ action by left and right multiplication) of determinantal representations are in one to one correspondence with the sets of six mutually skew lines on $S$ and with the 72 (two-dimensional) linear systems of twisted cubic curves on $S$. Moreover, if a determinantal representation $M$ corresponds to lines $(a_1,...,a_6)$ then its transpose $M^t$ corresponds to lines $(b_1,...,b_6)$ which together form a Schläfli's double-six $a_1... a_6 \choose b_1... b_6$. We also discuss the existence of self-adjoint and definite determinantal representation for smooth real cubic surfaces. The number of these representations depends on the Segre type $F_i$. We show that a surface of type $F_i$, $i=1,2,3,4$ has exactly $2(i-1)$ nonequivalent self-adjoint determinantal representations none of which is definite, while a surface of type $F_5$ has 24 nonequivalent self-adjoint determinantal representations, 16 of which are definite.
We study the birational geometry of irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties arising as varieties of lines of general cubic fourfolds containing a cubic scroll. We compute the ample and moving cones, and exhibit a birational automorphism of infinite order explaining the chamber decomposition of the moving cone.
We compute and study two determinantal representations of the discriminant of a cubic quaternary form. The first representation is the Chow form of the $2$-uple embedding of $\mathbb{P}^3$ and is computed as the Pfaffian of the Chow form of a rank 2 Ulrich bundle on this Veronese variety. We then consider the determinantal representation described by Nanson. We investigate the geometric nature of cubic surfaces whose discriminant matrices satisfy certain rank conditions. As a special case of interest, we use certain minors of this matrix to suggest equations vanishing on the locus of $k$-nodal…
In this note, we study linear determinantal representations of smooth plane cubics over finite fields. We give an explicit formula of linear determinantal representations corresponding to rational points. Using Schoof's formula, we count the number of projective equivalence classes of smooth plane cubics over a finite field admitting prescribed number of equivalence classes of linear determinantal representations. As an application, we determine isomorphism classes of smooth plane cubics over a finite field with 0, 1 or 2 equivalence classes of linear determinantal representations.
Can a smooth plane cubic be defined by the determinant of a square matrix with entries in linear forms in three variables? If we can, we say that it admits a linear determinantal representation. In this paper, we investigate linear determinantal representations of smooth plane cubics over various fields, and prove that any smooth plane cubic over a large field (or an ample field) admits a linear determinantal representation. Since local fields are large, any smooth plane cubic over a local field always admits a linear determinantal representation. As an application, we prove that a positive pr…
We give a brief report on our computations of linear determinantal representations of smooth plane cubics over finite fields. After recalling a classical interpretation of linear determinantal representations as rational points on the affine part of Jacobian varieties, we give an algorithm to obtain all linear determinantal representations up to equivalence. We also report our recent study on computations of linear determinantal representations of twisted Fermat cubics defined over the field of rational numbers. This paper is a summary of the author's talk at the JSIAM JANT workshop on algorit…
The discriminant of a smooth plane cubic curve over the complex numbers can be written as a product of theta functions. This provides an important connection between algebraic and analytic objects. In this paper, we perform a new approach to obtain this classical result by using determinantal representations. More precisely, one can represent a non-singular cubic form as the determinant of a matrix whose elements are linear forms. Theta functions naturally appear in this representation and thus in the discriminant of the cubic.
In this article we find all (decomposable and indecomposable) $6\times 6$ linear determinantal representations of smooth Weierstrass cubics. As a corollary we verify the Kippenhahn conjecture for $M_6$.
Linear projections from P^k to P^h appear in computer vision as models of images of dynamic or segmented scenes. Given multiple projections of the same scene, the identification of many enough correspondences between the images allows, in principle, to reconstruct the position of the projected objects. A critical locus for the reconstruction problem is a variety in P^k containing the set of points for which the reconstruction fails. Critical loci turn out to be determinantal varieties. In this paper we determine and classify all the smooth critical loci, showing that they are classical project…
We introduce the DeterminantalRepresentations package for Macaulay2, which computes definite symmetric determinantal representations of real polynomials. We focus on quadrics and plane curves of low degree (i.e. cubics and quartics). Our algorithms are geared towards speed and robustness, employing linear algebra and numerical algebraic geometry, without genericity assumptions on the polynomials.
This note is motivated by the Question 16 of http://cubics.wikidot.com: Which configurations of 15 points in the projective 3-space arise as eigenpoints of a cubic surface? We prove that a general eigenscheme in the projective n-space is the complete intersection of two suitable smooth determinantal curves on a smooth determinantal surface. Moreover, we prove that the converse result holds if n=3, providing an answer in any degree to the cited question. Finally, we show that any general set of points in the projective 3-space can be enlarged to an eigenscheme of a partially symmetric tensor.
We construct a new twenty-dimensional family of projective eight-dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds: the compactified moduli space M_3(Y) of twisted cubics on a smooth cubic fourfold Y that does not contain a plane is shown to be smooth and to admit a contraction M_3(Y) -> Z(Y) to a projective eight-dimensional symplectic manifold Z(Y). The construction is based on results on linear determinantal representations of singular cubic surfaces.
We give two algorithms to compute linear determinantal representations of smooth plane curves of any degree over any field. As particular examples, we explicitly give representatives of all equivalence classes of linear determinantal representations of two special quartics over the field $\mathbb{Q}$ of rational numbers, the Klein quartic and the Fermat quartic. This paper is a summary of third author's talk at the JSIAM JANT workshop on algorithmic number theory in March 2018. Details will appear elsewhere.
A smooth plane curve is said to admit a symmetric determinantal representation if it can be defined by the determinant of a symmetric matrix with entries in linear forms in three variables. We study the local-global principle for the existence of symmetric determinantal representations of smooth plane curves over a global field of characteristic different from two. When the degree of the plane curve is less than or equal to three, we relate the problem of finding symmetric determinantal representations to more familiar Diophantine problems on the Severi-Brauer varieties and mod 2 Galois repres…
We give an application of Mumford's theory of canonical theta characteristics to a Diophantine problem in characteristic two. We prove that a smooth plane curve over a global field of characteristic two is defined by the determinant of a symmetric matrix with entries in linear forms in three variables if and only if such a symmetric determinantal representation exists everywhere locally. It is a special feature in characteristic two because analogous results are not true in other characteristics.
We study codimension two determinantal varieties with isolated singularities. These singularities admit a unique smoothing, thus we can define their Milnor number as the middle Betti number of their generic fiber. For surfaces in C^4, we obtain a Lê-Greuel formula expressing the Milnor number of the surface in terms of the second polar multiplicity and the Milnor number of a generic section. We also relate the Milnor number with Ebeling and Gusein-Zade index of the 1- form given by the differential of a generic linear projection defined on the surface. To illustrate the results, in the last se…
We show that for every smooth hyperbolic polynomial h there is another hyperbolic polynomial q such that qh has a definite determinantal representation. This is proved by considering sum-of-squares decompositions of certain bilinear forms called Bézoutians. Besides commutative algebra, the proof relies on results from real algebraic geometry.

In this paper, we classify groups which faithfully act on smooth cubic threefolds. It turns out that there are exactly $6$ maximal ones and we describe them with explicit examples of target cubic threefolds.
We give normal forms of determinantal representations of a smooth projective plane cubic in terms of Moore matrices. Building on this, we exhibit matrix factorizations for all indecomposable vector bundles of rank 2 and degree 0 without nonzero sections, also called Ulrich bundles, on such curves.
Let $F\subseteq\mathbb{P}^3$ be a smooth determinantal quartic surface which is general in the Nöther-Lefschetz sense. In the present paper we give a complete classification of locally free sheaves $\mathcal{E}$ of rank $2$ on $F$ such that $h^1\big(F,\mathcal{E}(th)\big)=0$ for $t\in\mathbb{Z}$.
A smooth curve in the real projective plane is hyperbolic if its ovals are maximally nested. By the Helton-Vinnikov Theorem, any such curve admits a definite symmetric determinantal representation. We use polynomial homotopy continuation to compute such representations numerically. Our method works by lifting paths from the space of hyperbolic polynomials to a branched cover in the space of pairs of symmetric matrices.
We study the sheaves of logarithmic vector fields along smooth cubic curves in the projective plane, and prove a Torelli-type theorem in the sense of Dolgachev-Kapranov for those with non-vanishing j-invariants.
Jordan showed that the incidence variety of a smooth cubic surface containing 27 lines has solvable Galois group over the incidence variety of a smooth cubic surface containing 3 skew lines. As noted by Harris, it follows that for any smooth cubic surface, there exist formulas for all 27 lines in terms of any 3 skew lines. In response to a question of Farb, we compute these formulas explicitly. We also discuss how these formulas relate to Schläfli's count of lines on real smooth cubic surfaces.
We give an explicit presentation of the integral Chow ring of a stack of smooth plane cubics. We also determine some relations in the general case of hypersurfaces of any dimension and degree.
We pose some questions about spaces parametrizing rational curves on rationally connected varieties. We give a partial answer for cubic threefolds. Many of our results were previously proved by Iliev, Markushevich and Tikhimirov by analyzing vector bundles on cubic threefolds. Our proofs use residuation rather than vector bundles.
In this paper, we study the geometry of two-torsion points of elliptic curves in order to distinguish the embedded topology of reducible plane curves consisting of a smooth cubic and its tangent lines. As a result, we obtain a new family of Zariski N-ples consisting of such curves.
Smooth real cubic surfaces are birationally trivial (over $\R$) if and only if their real locus is connected or, equivalently, if and only if they have two skew real lines or two skew complex conjugate lines. In such a case a parametrization over the reals can be given by cubic polynomials. In this short note we provide a simple geometric method to obtain such parametrization based in an algorithm by I. Polo-Blanco and J. Top \cite{Po-Top}.
We prove that every projective embedding of a connected scheme determined by the complete linear series of a sufficiently ample line bundle is defined by the 2-minors of a 1-generic matrix of linear forms. Extending the work of Eisenbud-Koh-Stillman for integral curves, we also provide effective descriptions for such determinantally presented ample line bundles on products of projective spaces, Gorenstein toric varieties, and smooth n-folds.
We construct and study Sarkisov links obtained by blowing up smooth space curves lying on smooth cubic surfaces. We restrict our attention to the case where the blowup is not weak Fano. Together with the results of arXiv:1106.3716 which cover the weak Fano case, we provide a classification of all such curves. This is achieved by computing all curves which satisfy certain necessary criteria on their multisecant curves and then constructing the Sarkisov link step by step.
In this paper we give an effective criterion as to when a prime number p is the order of an automorphism of a smooth cubic hypersurface of P^{n+1}, for a fixed n > 1. We also provide a computational method to classify all such hypersurfaces that admit an automorphism of prime order p. In particular, we show that p<2^{n+1} and that any such hypersurface admitting an automorphism of order p>2^n is isomorphic to the Klein n-fold. We apply our method to compute exhaustive lists of automorphism of prime order of smooth cubic threefolds and fourfolds. Finally, we provide an application to the moduli…
In this paper we investigate the divisor $\mathcal C_{14}$ inside the moduli space of smooth cubic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P^5$, whose generic element is a smooth cubic containing a smooth quartic scroll. Using the fact that all degenerations of quartic scrolls in $\mathbb P^5$ contained in a smooth cubic hypersurface are surfaces with one apparent double point, we conclude that every cubic hypersurface belonging to $\mathcal C_{14}$ is rational. As an application of our results and of the construction of some explicit examples contained in the Appendix, we also prove that the Pfaffian locus…
We provide explicit equations of some smooth complex quartic surfaces with many lines, including all 10 quartics with more than 52 lines. We study the relation between linear automorphisms and some configurations of lines such as twin lines and special lines. We answer a question by Oguiso on a determinantal presentation of the Fermat quartic surface.
We classify all possible automorphism groups of smooth cubic surfaces over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. As an intermediate step we also classify automorphism groups of quartic del Pezzo surfaces. We show that the moduli space of smooth cubic surfaces is rational in every characteristic, determine the dimensions of the strata admitting each possible isomorphism class of automorphism group, and find explicit normal forms in each case. Finally, we completely characterize when a smooth cubic surface in positive characteristic, together with a group action, can be lift…
In this text we prove that if a smooth cubic in $\PR^5$ has its Fano variety of lines birational to the Hilbert scheme of two points on a K3 surface, then there exists a smooth projective curve or a smooth projective surface embedded in the Fano variety, such that the kernel of the push-forward (at the level of zero cycles ) induced by the closed embedding is torsion.
Let R be a polynomial ring and M a finitely generated graded R-module of maximal grade (which means that the ideal I_t(\cA) generated by the maximal minors of a homogeneous presentation matrix, \cA, of M has maximal codimension in R). Suppose X:=Proj(R/I_t(\cA)) is smooth in a sufficiently large open subset and dim X > 0. Then we prove that the local graded deformation functor of M is isomorphic to the local Hilbert (scheme) functor at X \subset Proj(R) under a week assumption which holds if dim X > 1. Under this assumptions we get that the Hilbert scheme is smooth at (X), and we give an expli…
We prove that the defining equations of the Fermat curves of prime degree cannot be written as the determinant of symmetric matrices with entries in linear forms in three variables with rational coefficients. In the proof, we use a relation between symmetric matrices with entries in linear forms and non-effective theta characteristics on smooth plane curves. We also use some results of Gross-Rohrlich on the rational torsion points on the Jacobian varieties of the Fermat curves of prime degree.
In this paper, we study the deformations of curves in the projective 3-space $\mathbb P^3$ (space curves), one of the most classically studied objects in algebraic geometry. We prove a conjecture due to J. O. Kleppe (in fact, a version modified by Ph. Ellia) concerning maximal families of space curves lying on a smooth cubic surface, assuming the quadratic normality of its general members. We also give a sufficient condition for curves lying on a cubic surface to be obstructed in $\mathbb P^3$ in terms of lines on the surface. For the proofs, we use the Hilbert-flag scheme of $\mathbb P^3$ as …
We continue the development of the study of the equisingularity of isolated singularities, in the determinantal case. This version of the paper includes a substantial amount of new material (76% larger). The new material introduces the idea of the landscape of singularity, which includes the allowable deformations of the singularity and associated structure useful for equisingularity questions. Fixing a presentation matrix M of a determinantal singularity means viewing the singularity as a section via M of the set of matrices of a given or smaller rank. Varying M gives the allowable deformatio…
