Properties of the set $T_s$ of "particularly non-normal numbers" of the unit interval are studied in details ($T_s$ consists of real numbers $x$, some of whose s-adic digits have the asymptotic frequencies in the nonterminating $s-$ adic expansion of $x$, and some do not). It is proven that the set $T_s$ is residual in the topological sense (i.e., it is of the first Baire category) and it is generic in the sense of fractal geometry ($T_s$ is a superfractal set, i.e., its Hausdorff-Besicovitch dimension is equal to~1). A topological and fractal classification of sets of real numbers via analysis of asymptotic frequencies of digits in their s-adic expansions is presented.
The local theory of complex dimensions for real and $p$-adic fractal strings describes oscillations that are intrinsic to the geometry, dynamics and spectrum of archimedean and nonarchimedean fractal strings. We aim to develop a global theory of complex dimensions for adèlic fractal strings in order to reveal the oscillatory nature of adèlic fractal strings and to understand the Riemann hypothesis in terms of the vibrations and resonances of fractal strings. We present a simple and natural construction of self-similar $p$-adic fractal strings of any rational dimension in the closed unit interv…
The theory of p-adic fractal strings and their complex dimensions was developed by the first two authors in [17, 18, 19], particularly in the self-similar case, in parallel with its archimedean (or real) counterpart developed by the first and third author in [28]. Using the fractal tube formula obtained by the authors for p-adic fractal strings in [20], we present here an exact volume formula for the tubular neighborhood of a p-adic self-similar fractal string Lp, expressed in terms of the underlying complex dimensions. The periodic structure of the complex dimensions allows one to obtain a ve…
We give a brief overview of the theory of complex dimensions of real (archimedean) fractal strings via an illustrative example, the ordinary Cantor string, and a detailed survey of the theory of p-adic (nonarchimedean) fractal strings and their complex dimensions. Moreover, we present an explicit volume formula for the tubular neighborhood of a p-adic fractal string Lp, expressed in terms of the underlying complex dimensions. Special attention will be focused on p-adic self-similar strings, in which the nonarchimedean theory takes a more natural form than its archimedean counterpart. In contra…
We study topological, metric and fractal properties of the level sets $$S_θ=\{x:r(x)=θ\}$$ of the function $r$ of asymptotic mean of digits of a number $x\in[0;1]$ in its $4$-adic representation, $$r(x)=\lim\limits_{n\to\infty}\frac{1}{n}\sum\limits^{n}_{i=1}α_i(x)$$ if the asymptotic frequency $ν_j(x)$ of at least one digit does not exist, were $$ ν_j(x)=\lim_{n\to\infty}n^{-1}#\{k: α_k(x)=j, k\leqslant n\}, \:\: j=0,1,2,3. $$

In this paper, we study a relation between digits of $p$-adic numbers and Mahler's classification. We show that an irrational $p$-adic number whose digits are automatic, primitive morphic, or Sturmian is an $S$-, $T$-, or $U_1$-number in the sense of Mahler's classification. Furthermore, we give an algebraic independence criterion for $p$-adic numbers whose digits are Sturmian.
A $\widetilde{Q}-$representation of real numbers is introduced as a generalization of the $p-$adic and $Q-$representations. It is shown that the $\widetilde{Q}-$representation may be used as a convenient tool for the construction and study of fractals and sets with complicated local structure. Distributions of random variables $ξ$ with independent $\widetilde{Q}-$symbols are studied in details. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the probability measures $μ_ξ$ associated with $ξ$ to be either absolutely continuous or singular (resp. pure continuous, or pure point) are found in terms of the…
This article deals with redundant digit expansions with an imaginary quadratic algebraic integer with trace $\pm 1$ as base and a minimal norm representatives digit set. For $w\geq 2$ it is shown that the width-$w$ non-adjacent form is not an optimal expansion, meaning that it does not minimize the (Hamming-)weight among all possible expansions with the same digit set. One main part of the proof uses tools from Diophantine analysis, namely the theory of linear forms in logarithms and the Baker--Davenport reduction method.
Let $b \geq 2$ be an integer base with prime factors $p_1, \ldots, p_s$. In this paper we study sequences of "$b$-adic valuations" and last nonzero digits in $b$-adic expansions of the values $f(n) = (f_1(n), \ldots, f_s(n))$, where each $f_i$ is a $p_i$-adic analytic function. We give a complete classification concerning $k$-regularity of these sequences, which generalizes a result for $b$ prime obtained by Shu and Yao. As an application, we strengthen a theorem by Murru and Sanna on $b$-adic valuations of Lucas sequences of the first kind. Moreover, we derive a method to determine precisely …
-- We give a new description of the logarithm matrix of a modular form in terms of distributions, generalizing the work of Dion and Lei for the case…
For a prime $p$ and a matrix $A \in \mathbb{Z}^{n \times n}$, write $A$ as $A = p (A \,\mathrm{quo}\, p) + (A \,\mathrm{rem}\, p)$ where the remainder and quotient operations are applied element-wise. Write the $p$-adic expansion of $A$ as $A = A^{[0]} + p A^{[1]} + p^2 A^{[2]} + \cdots$ where each $A^{[i]} \in \mathbb{Z}^{n \times n}$ has entries between $[0, p-1]$. Upper bounds are proven for the $\mathbb{Z}$-ranks of $A \,\mathrm{rem}\, p$, and $A \,\mathrm{quo}\, p$. Also, upper bounds are proven for the $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$-rank of $A^{[i]}$ for all $i \ge 0$ when $p = 2$, and a conje…
We study the convergence of certain subseries of the harmonic series corresponding to increasing sequences of integers whose digits in a certain base are not uniformly distributed. We also discuss the case of irregular sequences, where the frequency distribution of some of the digits does not exist. Examples are given for irregular sequences where the corresponding harmonic subseries is convergent, or divergent, respectively.
In this article, first we generalize the Thue-Morse sequence $(a(n))_{n=0}^\infty$ (the generalized Thue-Morse sequences) by a cyclic permutation and $k$ -adic expansion of natural numbers, and consider the necessary-sufficient condition that it is non-periodic. Moreover we will show that, if the generalized Thue-Morse sequence is not periodic, then all equally spaced subsequences $(a(N+nl))_{n=0}^\infty$ (where $N \ge 0$ and $l >0$) of the generalized Thue-Morse sequences are not periodic. Finally we apply the criterion of [ABL], [Bu$1$] on transcendental numbers, to find that , for a non per…
Following Sun and Moll, we study v_p(T(N)), the p-adic valuation of the counting function of the alternating sign matrices. We find an exact analytic expression for it that exhibits the fluctuating behaviour, by means of Fourier coefficients. The method is the Mellin-Perron technique, which is familiar in the analysis of the sum-of-digits function and related quantities.
In this paper, we discuss a connection between geometric measure theory and number theory. This method brings a new point of view for some number-theoretic problems concerning digit expansions. Among other results, we showed that for each integer $k,$ there is a number $M>0$ such that if $b_1,\dots,b_k$ are multiplicatively independent integers greater than $M$, there are infinitely many integers whose base $b_1,b_2,\dots,b_k$ expansions all do not have any zero digits.
This paper studies geometric and spectral properties of $S$-adic shifts and their relation to continued fraction algorithms. These shifts are symbolic dynamical systems obtained by iterating infinitely many substitutions. Pure discrete spectrum for $S$-adic shifts and tiling properties of associated Rauzy fractals are established under a generalized Pisot assumption together with a geometric coincidence condition. These general results extend the scope of the Pisot substitution conjecture to the $S$-adic framework. They are applied to families of $S$-adic shifts generated by Arnoux-Rauzy as we…
This paper continues the study of the structure of finite intersections of general multiplicative translates $\mathcal{C}(M_1,\ldots,M_n)=\frac{1}{M_1}Σ_{3,\bar{2}}\cap\cdots\cap\frac{1}{M_n}Σ_{3,\bar{2}}$ for integers $1\leq M_1<\cdots<M_n$, where $Σ_{3,\bar{2}}$ denotes the $3$-adic Cantor set. This study was motivated by questions concerning the discrete dynamical system on the $3$-adic integers $\mathbb{Z}_3$ given by multiplication by $2$. The exceptional set $\mathcal{E}(\mathbb{Z}_3)$ is defined to be the set of all elements of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ whose forward orbits under this action inter…
Let $p$ be a prime number and $ξ$ an irrational $p$-adic number. Its multiplicative irrationality exponent ${μ^{\times}} (ξ)$ is the supremum of the real numbers ${μ^{\times}}$ for which the inequality $$ |b ξ- a|_{p} \leq | a b |^{- {μ^{\times}} / 2} $$ has infinitely many solutions in nonzero integers $a, b$. We show that ${μ^{\times}} (ξ)$ can be expressed in terms of a new exponent of approximation attached to a sequence of rational numbers defined in terms of $ξ$. We establish that ${μ^{\times}} ({{ξ_{{\bf t}, p}}}) = 3$, where ${{ξ_{{\bf t}, p}}}$ is the $p$-adic number $1 - p - p^2 + p^…
In number theory, we know Legendre's formula $ v_p(n!) = \sum_{k \ge 1} \lfloor \frac{n}{p^k} \rfloor $, which calculates the $p$-adic valuation of the factorial, i.e. the exponent of the greatest power of a prime $p$ that divides $n!$. There is also the second (or alternative) equality $ v_p (n!) = \frac{n-s_p(n)}{p-1} $ where $s_p(n)$ is the $p$-adic weight of $n$ or the sum of digits of $n$ in base $p$. Both kinds of Legendre's formula allow us to determine valuations of the natural number, the odd factorial, binomial coefficients, Catalan numbers, and other combinatorial objects. The artic…
In this paper, we investigate the 2-adic valuations of the Stirling numbers $S(n, k)$ of the second kind. We show that $v_2(S(4i, 5))=v_2(S(4i+3, 5))$ if and only if $i\not\equiv 7\pmod {32}$. This confirms a conjecture of Amdeberhan, Manna and Moll raised in 2008. We show also that $v_2(S(2^n+1, k+1))= s_2(n)-1$ for any positive integer $n$, where $s_2(n)$ is the sum of binary digits of $n$. It proves another conjecture of Amdeberhan, Manna and Moll.
In this paper we completely solve the Diophantine equation $F_n+F_m=2^{a_1}+2^{a_2}+2^{a_3}+2^{a_4}+2^{a_5}$, where $F_k$ denotes the $k$-th Fibonacci number. In addition to complex linear forms in logarithms and the Baker-Davenport reduction method, we use $p$-adic versions of both tools.
In this paper, we will introduce and study the lower moving digit mean $\underline{M}(x)$ and the upper moving digit mean $\overline{M}(x)$ of $x\in[0,1]$ in $p$-adic expansion, where $p\geq2$ is an integer. Moreover, the Hausdorff dimension of level set \[B(α,β)=\left\{x\in [0,1]\colon \underline{M}(x)=α,\overline{M}(x)=β\right\}\] is determined for each pair of numbers $α$ and $β$ satisfying with $0\leqα\leqβ\leq p-1$.
Paul Erdos asked how frequently the ternary expansion of 2^n omits the digit 2. He conjectured this happens only for finitely many values of n. We generalize this question to consider iterates of two discrete dynamical systems. The first is over the real numbers, and considers the integer part of lambda 2^n for a real input lambda. The second is over the 3-adic integers, and considers the sequence lambda 2^n for a 3-adic integer input lambda. We show that the number of input values that have infinitely many iterates omitting the digit 2 in their ternary expansion is small in a suitable sense. …
This paper continues the author's previous studies on continued fractions and Heron's algorithm, as from his former JMM2017 presentation (see \cite{CF.HA}).\par\medskip Extending the notion of continued fraction to the $p$-adic fields, one can find continued fractions which converge in both real and $p$-adic topologies to the `same' quadratic irrational number, some of which are given by the Heron's algorithm using a generalized version of an author's theorem from the cited JMM presentation. The definition can be possibly generalized to other global fields, as left as an open question. We will…
This article introduces a new kind of number systems on $p$-adic integers which is inspired by the well-known $3n+1$ conjecture of Lothar Collatz. A $p$-adic system is a piecewise function on $\mathbb{Z}_p$ which has branches for all residue classes modulo $p$ and whose dynamics can be used to define digit expansions of $p$-adic integers which respect congruency modulo powers of $p$ and admit a distinctive "block structure". $p$-adic systems generalize several notions related to $p$-adic integers such as permutation polynomials and put them under a common framework, allowing for results and te…
It is well known that all numbers that are normal of order $k$ in base $b$ are also normal of all orders less than $k$. Another basic fact is that every real number is normal in base $b$ if and only if it is simply normal in base $b^k$ for all $k$. This may be interpreted to mean that a number is normal in base $b$ if and only if all blocks of digits occur with the desired relative frequency along every infinite arithmetic progression. We reinterpret these theorems for the $Q$-Cantor series expansions and show that they are no longer true in a particularly strong way. The main theoretical resu…
Motivated by a question of Erdős, this paper considers questions concerning the discrete dynamical system on the 3-adic integers given by multiplication by 2. Let the 3-adic Cantor set consist of all 3-adic integers whose expansions use only the digits 0 and 1. The exception set is the set of 3-adic integers whose forward orbits under this action intersects the 3-adic Cantor set infinitely many times. It has been shown that this set has Hausdorff dimension 0. Approaches to upper bounds on the Hausdorff dimensions of these sets leads to study of intersections of multiplicative translates of Can…
This work addresses problems on simultaneous Diophantine approximation on fractals, motivated by a long standing problem of Mahler regarding Cantor's middle $1/3$ set. We obtain the first instances where a complete analogue of Khintchine's Theorem holds for fractal measures. Our results apply to fractals which are self-similar by a system of rational similarities of $\mathbb{R}^d$ (for any $d\geq 1$) and have sufficiently small Hausdorff co-dimension. A concrete example of such measures in the context of Mahler's problem is the Hausdorff measure on the "middle $1/5$ Cantor set"; i.e. the set o…
In the present paper we explore a way to represent numbers with respect to the base $-\frac32$ using the set of digits $\{0,1,2\}$. Although this number system shares several properties with the classical decimal system, it shows remarkable differences and reveals interesting new features. For instance, it is related to the field of $2$-adic numbers, and to some ``fractal'' set that gives rise to a tiling of a non-Euclidean space.

We establish various new results on a problem proposed by K. Mahler in 1984 concerning rational approximation to fractal sets by rational numbers inside and outside the set in question, respectively. Some of them provide a natural continuation and improvement of recent results of Broderick, Fishman and Reich and Fishman and Simmons. A key feature is that many of our new results apply to more general, multi-dimensional fractal sets and require only mild assumptions on the iterated function system. Moreover we provide a non-trivial lower bound for the distance of a rational number $p/q$ outside …
This paper explores two techniques on a family of hyperelliptic curves that have been proposed to accelerate computation of scalar multiplication for hyperelliptic curve cryptosystems. In elliptic curve cryptosystems, it is known that Koblitz curves admit fast scalar multiplication, namely, the $τ$-adic non-adjacent form ($τ$-NAF). It is shown that the $τ$-NAF has the three properties: (1) existence, (2) uniqueness, and (3) minimality of the Hamming weight. These properties are not only of intrinsic mathematical interest, but also desirable in some cryptographic applications. On the other hand…
Fix a positive integer $N\geq2$. For a real number $x\in[0,1]$ and a digit $i\in\{0, 1,...,N-1\}$, let $Π_i(x, n)$ denote the frequency of the digit $i$ among the first $n$ $N$-adic digits of $x$. It is well-known that for a typical (in the sense of Baire) $x\in[0, 1]$, the frequencies diverge as $n\rightarrow\infty$. In this paper we provide a substantial strengthening of this result. Namely, we show that for a typical $x\in[0, 1]$ any regular linear average of the sequence $(Π_i(x, n))_n$ also diverges spectacularly.
We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $Φ$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we ob…
Generalized Lüroth series generalize $b$-adic representations as well as Lüroth series. Almost all real numbers are normal, but it is not easy to construct one. In this paper, a new construction of normal numbers with respect to Generalized Lüroth Series (including those with an infinite digit set) is given. Our method concatenates the beginnings of the expansions of an arbitrary equidistributed sequence.
