The local theory of complex dimensions for real and $p$-adic fractal strings describes oscillations that are intrinsic to the geometry, dynamics and spectrum of archimedean and nonarchimedean fractal strings. We aim to develop a global theory of complex dimensions for adèlic fractal strings in order to reveal the oscillatory nature of adèlic fractal strings and to understand the Riemann hypothesis in terms of the vibrations and resonances of fractal strings.
We present a simple and natural construction of self-similar $p$-adic fractal strings of any rational dimension in the closed unit interval $[0,1]$. Moreover, as a first step towards a global theory of complex dimensions for adèlic fractal strings, we construct an adèlic Cantor string in the set of finite adèles $\mathbb{A}_0$ as an infinite Cartesian product of every $p$-adic Cantor string, as well as an adèlic Cantor-Smith string in the ring of adèles $\mathbb{A}$ as a Cartesian product of the general Cantor string and the adèlic Cantor string.
It is well known that rational multiplication preserves normality in base $b$. We study related normality preserving operations for the $Q$-Cantor series expansions. In particular, we show that while integer multiplication preserves $Q$-distribution normality, it fails to preserve $Q$-normality in a particularly strong manner. We also show that $Q$-distribution normality is not preserved by non-integer rational multiplication on a set of zero measure and full Hausdorff dimension.
We investigate how non-zero rational multiplication and rational addition affect normality with respect to $Q$-Cantor series expansions. In particular, we show that there exists a $Q$ such that the set of real numbers which are $Q$-normal but not $Q$-distribution normal, and which still have this property when multiplied and added by rational numbers has full Hausdorff dimension. Moreover, we give such a number that is explicit in the sense that it is computable.
We establish various new results on a problem proposed by K. Mahler in 1984 concerning rational approximation to fractal sets by rational numbers inside and outside the set in question, respectively. Some of them provide a natural continuation and improvement of recent results of Broderick, Fishman and Reich and Fishman and Simmons. A key feature is that many of our new results apply to more general, multi-dimensional fractal sets and require only mild assumptions on the iterated function system. Moreover we provide a non-trivial lower bound for the distance of a rational number $p/q$ outside …
It is well known that all numbers that are normal of order $k$ in base $b$ are also normal of all orders less than $k$. Another basic fact is that every real number is normal in base $b$ if and only if it is simply normal in base $b^k$ for all $k$. This may be interpreted to mean that a number is normal in base $b$ if and only if all blocks of digits occur with the desired relative frequency along every infinite arithmetic progression. We reinterpret these theorems for the $Q$-Cantor series expansions and show that they are no longer true in a particularly strong way. The main theoretical resu…
Motivated by a question of Erdős, this paper considers questions concerning the discrete dynamical system on the 3-adic integers given by multiplication by 2. Let the 3-adic Cantor set consist of all 3-adic integers whose expansions use only the digits 0 and 1. The exception set is the set of 3-adic integers whose forward orbits under this action intersects the 3-adic Cantor set infinitely many times. It has been shown that this set has Hausdorff dimension 0. Approaches to upper bounds on the Hausdorff dimensions of these sets leads to study of intersections of multiplicative translates of Can…
Suppose that $(P,Q) \in \mathbb{N}_2^{\mathbb{N}} \times \mathbb{N}_2^{\mathbb{N}}$ and $x=E_0.E_1E_2\cdots$ is the $P$-Cantor series expansion of $x \in \mathbb{R}$. We define $ψ_{P,Q}(x):=\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac {\min(E_n,q_n-1)} {q_1 \cdots q_n}$. The functions $ψ_{P,Q}$ are used to construct many pathological examples of normal numbers. These constructions are used to give the complete containment relation between the sets of $Q$-normal, $Q$-ratio normal, and $Q$-distribution normal numbers and their pairwise intersections for fully divergent $Q$ that are infinite in limit. We analyze the …
We study some number theory problems related to the harmonic analysis (Fourier bases) of the Cantor set introduced by Jorgensen and Pedersen in \cite{JP98}.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. We propose an algorithm for computing rational representations of isogenies between Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves via-adic differential equations with a sharp analysis of the loss of precision. Consequently, after having possibly lifted the problem in the $p$-adics, we derive fast algorithms for computing explicitly Cantor's division polynomials of hyperelliptic curves defined over finite fields.
Following K. Mahler's suggestion for further research on intrinsic approximation on the Cantor ternary set, we obtain a Dirichlet type theorem for the limit sets of rational iterated function systems. We further investigate the behavior of these approximation functions under random translations. We connect the information regarding the distribution of rationals on the limit set encoded in the system to the distribution of rationals in reduced form by proving a Khinchin type theorem. Finally, using a result of S. Ramanujan, we prove a theorem motivating a conjecture regarding the distribution o…
In this paper, we consider the intrinsic Diophantine approximation on the triadic Cantor set $\mathcal{K}$, i.e. approximating the points in $\mathcal{K}$ by rational numbers inside $\mathcal{K}$, a question posed by K. Mahler. By using another height function of a rational number in $\mathcal{K}$, i.e. the denominator obtained from its periodic 3-adic expansion, a complete metric theory for this variant intrinsic Diophantine approximation is presented which yields the divergence theory of Mahler's original question.
Let p be a prime number. The p-adic case of the Mixed Littlewood Conjecture states that liminf_{q \to \infty} q . |q|_p . ||q x|| = 0 for all real numbers x. We show that with the additional factor of log q.loglog q the statement is false. Indeed, our main result implies that the set of x for which liminf_{q\to\infty} q . log q . loglog q. |q|_p . ||qx|| > 0 is of full dimension. The result is obtained as an application of a general framework for Cantor sets developed in this paper.
The theory of p-adic fractal strings and their complex dimensions was developed by the first two authors in [17, 18, 19], particularly in the self-similar case, in parallel with its archimedean (or real) counterpart developed by the first and third author in [28]. Using the fractal tube formula obtained by the authors for p-adic fractal strings in [20], we present here an exact volume formula for the tubular neighborhood of a p-adic self-similar fractal string Lp, expressed in terms of the underlying complex dimensions. The periodic structure of the complex dimensions allows one to obtain a ve…
Properties of the set $T_s$ of "particularly non-normal numbers" of the unit interval are studied in details ($T_s$ consists of real numbers $x$, some of whose s-adic digits have the asymptotic frequencies in the nonterminating $s-$ adic expansion of $x$, and some do not). It is proven that the set $T_s$ is residual in the topological sense (i.e., it is of the first Baire category) and it is generic in the sense of fractal geometry ($T_s$ is a superfractal set, i.e., its Hausdorff-Besicovitch dimension is equal to~1). A topological and fractal classification of sets of real numbers via analysi…
This paper continues the study of the structure of finite intersections of general multiplicative translates $\mathcal{C}(M_1,\ldots,M_n)=\frac{1}{M_1}Σ_{3,\bar{2}}\cap\cdots\cap\frac{1}{M_n}Σ_{3,\bar{2}}$ for integers $1\leq M_1<\cdots<M_n$, where $Σ_{3,\bar{2}}$ denotes the $3$-adic Cantor set. This study was motivated by questions concerning the discrete dynamical system on the $3$-adic integers $\mathbb{Z}_3$ given by multiplication by $2$. The exceptional set $\mathcal{E}(\mathbb{Z}_3)$ is defined to be the set of all elements of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ whose forward orbits under this action inter…
We give a brief overview of the theory of complex dimensions of real (archimedean) fractal strings via an illustrative example, the ordinary Cantor string, and a detailed survey of the theory of p-adic (nonarchimedean) fractal strings and their complex dimensions. Moreover, we present an explicit volume formula for the tubular neighborhood of a p-adic fractal string Lp, expressed in terms of the underlying complex dimensions. Special attention will be focused on p-adic self-similar strings, in which the nonarchimedean theory takes a more natural form than its archimedean counterpart. In contra…
Fix $d\in\mathbb N$, and let $S\subseteq\mathbb R^d$ be either a real-analytic manifold or the limit set of an iterated function system (for example, $S$ could be the Cantor set or the von Koch snowflake). An $extrinsic$ Diophantine approximation to a point $\mathbf x\in S$ is a rational point $\mathbf p/q$ close to $\mathbf x$ which lies $outside$ of $S$. These approximations correspond to a question asked by K. Mahler ('84) regarding the Cantor set. Our main result is an extrinsic analogue of Dirichlet's theorem. Specifically, we prove that if $S$ does not contain a line segment, then for ev…
This work addresses problems on simultaneous Diophantine approximation on fractals, motivated by a long standing problem of Mahler regarding Cantor's middle $1/3$ set. We obtain the first instances where a complete analogue of Khintchine's Theorem holds for fractal measures. Our results apply to fractals which are self-similar by a system of rational similarities of $\mathbb{R}^d$ (for any $d\geq 1$) and have sufficiently small Hausdorff co-dimension. A concrete example of such measures in the context of Mahler's problem is the Hausdorff measure on the "middle $1/5$ Cantor set"; i.e. the set o…
Given $b > 1$ and $y \in \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$, we consider the set of $x\in \mathbb{R}$ such that $y$ is not a limit point of the sequence $\{b^n x \bmod 1: n\in\mathbb{N}\}$. Such sets are known to have full Hausdorff dimension, and in many cases have been shown to have a stronger property of being winning in the sense of Schmidt. In this paper, by utilizing Schmidt games, we prove that these sets and their bi-Lipschitz images must intersect with `sufficiently regular' fractals $K\subset \mathbb{R}$ (that is, supporting measures $μ$ satisfying certain decay conditions). Furthermore, the int…
