The main purpose of this paper is to give a mathematical definition of ``mirror symmetry'' for Calabi-Yau and G_2 manifolds. More specifically, we explain how to assign a G_2 manifold (M,ϕ,Λ), with the calibration 3-form ϕand an oriented 2-plane field Λ, a pair of parametrized tangent bundle valued 2 and 3-forms of M. These forms can then be used to define various different complex and symplectic structures on certain 6-dimensional subbundles of T(M). When these bundles are integrated they give mirror CY manifolds. In a similar way, one can define mirror dual G_2 manifolds inside of a Spin(7) manifold (N^8, Ψ). In case N^8 admits an oriented 3-plane field, by iterating this process we obtain Calabi-Yau submanifold pairs in N whose complex and symplectic structures determine each other via the calibration form of the ambient G_2 (or Spin(7)) manifold.
Previously the two of the authors defined a notion of dual Calabi-Yau manifolds in a G_2 manifold, and described a process to obtain them. Here we apply this process to a compact G_2 manifold, constructed by Joyce, and as a result we obtain a pair of Borcea-Voisin Calabi-Yau manifolds, which are known to be mirror duals of each other.
We study the geometry of complexified moduli spaces of special Lagrangian submanifolds in the complement of an anticanonical divisor in a compact Kahler manifold. In particular, we explore the connections between T-duality and mirror symmetry in concrete examples, and show how quantum corrections arise in this context.
We study mirror symmetry of type II strings on manifolds with the exceptional holonomy groups $G_2$ and Spin(7). Our central result is a construction of mirrors of Spin(7) manifolds realized as generalized connected sums. In parallel to twisted connected sum $G_2$ manifolds, mirrors of such Spin(7) manifolds can be found by applying mirror symmetry to the pair of non-compact manifolds they are glued from. To provide non-trivial checks for such geometric mirror constructions, we give a CFT analysis of mirror maps for Joyce orbifolds in several new instances for both the Spin(7) and the $G_2$ ca…
We study the moduli spaces of flat SL(r)- and PGL(r)-connections, or equivalently, Higgs bundles, on an algebraic curve. These spaces are noncompact Calabi-Yau orbifolds; we show that they can be regarded as mirror partners in two different senses. First, they satisfy the requirements laid down by Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ), in a suitably general sense involving a B-field or flat unitary gerbe. To show this, we use their hyperkahler structures and Hitchin's integrable systems. Second, their Hodge numbers, again in a suitably general sense, are equal. These spaces provide significant evidence …
Using mirror symmetry as described by Hori and Vafa, we compute the quantum equivariant cohomology ring of toric manifolds. This ring arises naturally in topological gauged sigma-models and is related to the Hamiltonian Gromov-Witten invariants of the target manifold.
We give a vertex algebra proof of the Berglund-Hübsch duality of nondegenerate invertible potentials. We suggest a way to unify it with the Batyrev-Borisov duality of reflexive Gorenstein cones.
We explain how to relate the problem of finding a mirror manifold for a Calabi-Yau manifold to the problem of characterizing the rational homotopy types of closed Kähler manifolds.
We revisit our construction of mirror symmetries for compactifications of Type II superstrings on twisted connected sum $G_2$ manifolds. For a given $G_2$ manifold, we discuss evidence for the existence of mirror symmetries of two kinds: one is an autoequivalence for a given Type II superstring on a mirror pair of $G_2$ manifolds, the other is a duality between Type II strings with different chiralities for another pair of mirror manifolds. We clarify the role of the B-field in the construction, and check that the corresponding massless spectra are respected by the generalized mirror maps. We …
We address the issue why Calabi-Yau manifolds exist with a mirror pair. We observe that the irreducible spinor representation of the Lorentz group Spin(6) requires us to consider the vector spaces of two-forms and four-forms on an equal footing. The doubling of the two-form vector space due to the Hodge duality doubles the variety of six-dimensional spin manifolds. We explore how the doubling is related to the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Via the gauge theory formulation of six-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, we show that the curvature tensor of a Calabi-Yau manifold satisfies th…
We introduce self-dual manifolds and show that they can be used to encode mirror symmetry for affine-Kähler manifolds and for elliptic curves. Their geometric properties, especially the link with special lagrangian fibrations and the existence of a transformation similar to the Fourier-Mukai functor, suggest that this approach may be able to explain mirror symmetry also in other situations
Recently, at least 50 million of novel examples of compact $G_2$ holonomy manifolds have been constructed as twisted connected sums of asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau threefolds. The purpose of this paper is to study mirror symmetry for compactifications of Type II superstrings in this context. We focus on $G_2$ manifolds obtained from building blocks constructed from dual pairs of tops, which are the closest to toric CY hypersurfaces, and formulate the analogue of the Batyrev mirror map for this class of $G_2$ holonomy manifolds, thus obtaining several millions of novel dual superstring…
In this article we discuss the geometry of moduli spaces of (1) flat bundles over special Lagrangian submanifolds and (2) deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills bundles over complex submanifolds in Calabi-Yau manifolds. These moduli spaces reflect the geometry of the Calabi-Yau itself like a mirror. Strominger, Yau and Zaslow conjecture that the mirror Calabi-Yau manifold is such a moduli space and they argue that the mirror symmetry duality is a Fourier-Mukai transformation. We review various aspects of the mirror symmetry conjecture and discuss a geometric approach in proving it. The existence of rig…
We construct a differential Gerstenhaber-Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra from Dolbeault complex of any close Kaehler manifold, and a Frobenius manifold structure on Dolbeault cohomology.
In this article we construct Lagrangian torus fibrations for general quintic \cy hypersurfaces near the large complex limit and their mirror manifolds using gradient flow method. Then we prove the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow mirror conjecture for this class of \cy manifolds in symplectic category.
A compact complex manifold is Kobayashi non-hyperbolic if there exists an entire curve on it. Using mirror symmetry we establish that there are (possibly singular) elliptic or rational curves on any Calabi-Yau manifold $X$, whose mirror dual $\check X$ exists and is not "Hodge degenerate", therefore proving that $X$ is Kobayashi non-hyperbolic. We are not aware of any higher dimensional simply connected Calabi-Yau manifolds that satisfy the "Hodge degenerate" condition.
We present a universal construction of almost duality for Frobenius manifolds. The analytic setup of this construction is described in details for the case of semisimple Frobenius manifolds. We illustrate the general considerations by examples from the singularity theory, mirror symmetry, the theory of Coxeter groups and Shephard groups, from the Seiberg - Witten duality.
Via considerations of symplectic reduction, monodromy, mirror symmetry and Chern-Simons functionals, a conjecture is proposed on the existence of special Lagrangians in the hamiltonian deformation class of a given Lagrangian submanifold of a Calabi-Yau manifold. It involves a stability condition for graded Lagrangians, and can be proved for the simple case of $T^2$.
We identify two Frobenius manifolds obtained from two different differential Gerstenhaber-Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras on a compact Kaehler manifold. One is constructed on the Dolbeault cohomology, and the other on the de Rham cohomology. Our result can be considered as a generalization of the identification of the Dolbeault cohomology ring with the complexified de Rham cohomology ring on a Kaehler manifold.
Topological-Holomorphic ${\mathcal N} =4$ Gauge Theory: From Langlands Duality of Holomorphic Invariants to Mirror Symmetry of Quasi-topological Strings
In this paper we summarize our recent work in the construction of Lagrangian torus fibrations for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties and the symplectic Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture, together with some new development. It is submittded to the Proceedings of the Conference in Symplectic Geometry and Mirror Symmetry held in KIAS, Seoul, Korea. The paper was finished in Jan. 2001, with revisions and added reference.
We perform a systematic study of S-duality for ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric non-linear abelian theories on a curved manifold. Localization can be used to compute certain supersymmetric observables in these theories. We point out that localization and S-duality acting as a Legendre transform are not compatible. For these theories S-duality should be interpreted as Fourier transform and we provide some evidence for this. We also suggest the notion of a coholomological prepotential for an abelian theory that gives the same partition function as a given non-abelian supersymmetric theory.
In general terms, Gelfand duality refers to a correspondence between a geometric, topological, or analytical category, and an algebraic category. For example, in smooth differential geometry, Gelfand duality refers to the topological embedding of a smooth manifold in the topological dual of its algebra of smooth functions. This is generalised here in two directions. First, the topological embeddings for manifolds are generalised to the cases of real analytic and Stein manifolds, using a unified cohomological argument. Second, this type of duality is extended to vector bundles, affine bundles, …
The mirror of a projective toric manifold $X_Σ$ is given by a Landau-Ginzburg model $(Y,W)$. We introduce a class of Lagrangian submanifolds in $(Y,W)$ and show that, under the SYZ mirror transformation, they can be transformed to torus-invariant hermitian metrics on holomorphic line bundles over $X_Σ$. Through this geometric correspondence, we also identify the mirrors of Hermitian-Einstein metrics, which are given by distinguished Lagrangian sections whose potentials satisfy certain Laplace-type equations.
We prove a duality principle for a special class of submanifolds in pseudo-Euclidean spaces. This class of submanifolds with potential of normals is introduced in this paper. We prove also, for example, that an arbitrary Frobenius manifold can be realized as a certain flat submanifold of this very natural class.
This work continues the study of $F$--manifolds $(M,\circ)$, first defined by Hertling and Manin and investigated in [He]. The notion of a compatible flat structure $\nabla$ is introduced, and it is shown that many constructions known for Frobenius manifolds do not in fact require invariant metrics and can be developed for all such triples $(M,\circ ,\nabla).$ In particular, we extend and generalize recent Dubrovin's duality.
This paper is the first arising from our project announced in math.AG/0211094, "Affine manifolds, log structures, and mirror symmetry." We aim to study mirror symmetry by studying the log structures of Illusie-Fontaine and Kato on degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds. The basic idea is that one can associate to certain sorts of degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds a log Calabi-Yau space, which is a log structure on the degenerate fibre. Then many statements about mirror symmetry which one hopes to be true for the general fibre should first be proved for this log CY space. In this paper we be…
We propose a new approach to the Mirror Symmetry Conjecture in a form suitable to possibly non-Kähler compact complex manifolds whose canonical bundle is trivial. We apply our methods by proving that the Iwasawa manifold $X$, a well-known non-Kähler compact complex manifold of dimension $3$, is its own mirror dual to the extent that its Gauduchon cone, replacing the classical Kähler cone that is empty in this case, corresponds to what we call the local universal family of essential deformations of $X$. These are obtained by removing from the Kuranishi family the two "superfluous" dimensions of…
This is a write-up of the author's talk in the conference "Algebraic Geometry in East Asia 2016" held at the University of Tokyo in January 2016. We give a survey on a series of papers of the author and his collaborators Daniel Pomerleano and Kazushi Ueda where we show how Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) transforms can be applied to understand the geometry of Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry (HMS) conjecture for certain local Calabi-Yau manifolds.
