This paper is the first arising from our project announced in math.AG/0211094, "Affine manifolds, log structures, and mirror symmetry." We aim to study mirror symmetry by studying the log structures of Illusie-Fontaine and Kato on degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds. The basic idea is that one can associate to certain sorts of degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds a log Calabi-Yau space, which is a log structure on the degenerate fibre. Then many statements about mirror symmetry which one hopes to be true for the general fibre should first be proved for this log CY space. In this paper we begin by discussing affine manifolds with singularities. Given such an affine manifold along with a polyhedral decomposition, we show how to construct a scheme consisting of a union of toric varieties. In certain non-degenerate cases, we can also construct log structures on these schemes. Conversely, given certain sorts of degenerations, one can build an affine manifold with singularities structure on the dual intersection complex of the degeneration. Mirror symmetry is then obtained as a discrete Legendre transform on these affine manifolds, thus providing an algebro-geometrization of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. The deepest result of this paper shows an isomorphism between log complex moduli of a log CY space and log Kahler moduli of its mirror.
We define a notion of logarithmic stable maps based on Bumsig Kim's construction. Then we prove a degeneration formula under this setting by applying the method develeoped by Dan Abramovich and Barbara Fantechi for transversal maps.
Batyrev (et. al.) constructed a family of Calabi-Yau varieties using small toric degenerations of the full flag variety G/B. They conjecture this family to be mirror to generic anti-canonical hypersurfaces in G/B. Recently Alexeev and Brion, as a part of their work on toric degenerations of spherical varieties, have constructed many degenerations of G/B. For any such degeneration we construct a family of varieties, which we prove coincides with Batyrev's in the small case. We prove that any two such families are birational, thus proving that mirror families are independent of the choice of deg…
We show that the dual of the Cayley cone, associated to a Minkowski sum decomposition of a reflexive polytope, contains a reflexive polytope admitting a nef-partition. This nef-partition corresponds to a Calabi-Yau complete intersection in a Gorenstein Fano toric variety degenerating to an ample Calabi-Yau hypersurface in another Fano toric variety. Using the Batyrev-Borisov mirror symmetry construction, we found the mirror contraction of a Calabi-Yau complete intersection to the mirror of the ample Calabi-Yau hypersurface.
The most fundamental example of mirror symmetry compares the Fermat hypersurfaces in P^n and P^n/G, where G is a finite group that acts on P^n and preserves the Fermat hypersurface. We generalise this to hypersurfaces in Grassmannians, where the picture is richer and more complex. There is a finite group G that acts on the Grassmannian Gr(n,r) and preserves an appropriate Calabi-Yau hypersurface. We establish how mirror symmetry, toric degenerations, blow-ups and variation of GIT relate the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces inside Gr(n,r) and Gr(n,r)/G. This allows us to describe a compactification of …
In this paper we propose and discuss a mirror construction for complete intersections in partial flag manifolds $F(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$. This construction includes our previous mirror construction for complete intersection in Grassmannians and the mirror construction of Givental for complete flag manifolds. The key idea of our construction is a degeneration of $F(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ to a certain Gorenstein toric Fano variety $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ which has been investigated by Gonciulea and Lakshmibai. We describe a natural small crepant desingularization of $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ and prove a gene…
For an arbitrary smooth n-dimensional Fano variety $X$ we introduce the notion of a small toric degeneration. Using small toric degenerations of Fano n-folds $X$, we propose a general method for constructing mirrors of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in $X$. Our mirror construction is based on a generalized monomial-divisor mirror correspondence which can be used for computing Gromov-Witten invariants of rational curves via specializations of GKZ-hypergeometric series.
Let $X\rightarrow C$ be a totally real semistable degeneration over a smooth real curve $C$ with degenerate fiber $X_0$. Assuming that the irreducible components of $X_0$ are simple from a cohomological point of view, we give a bound for the individual Betti numbers of a real smooth fiber near $0$ in terms of the complex geometry of the degeneration. This generalizes previous work of Renaudineau-Shaw, obtained via combinatorial techniques, for tropical degenerations of hypersurfaces in smooth toric varieties. The main new ingredient is the use of real logarithmic geometry, which allows to work…
In this paper, the Euler characteristic formula for projective logarithmic minimal degenerations of surfaces with Kodaira dimension zero over a 1-dimensional complex disk is proved under a reasonable assumption and as its application, the singularity of logarithmic minimal degenerations are determined in the abelian or hyperelliptic case. By globalizing this local analysis of singular fibres via generalized canonical bundle formulae due to Fujino-Mori, we bound the number of singular fibres of abelian fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds from above, which was previously done by Oguiso in the potentiall…
This paper continues the authors' program of studying mirror symmetry via log geometry and toric degenerations, relating affine manifolds with singularities, log Calabi-Yau spaces, and toric degenerations of Calabi-Yaus. The main focus of this paper is the calculation of the cohomology of a Calabi-Yau variety associated to a given affine manifold with singularities B. We show that the Dolbeault cohomology groups of the Calabi-Yau associated to B are described in terms of some cohomology groups of sheaves on B, as expected. This is proved first by calculating the log de Rham and log Dolbeault c…
We investigate a potential relationship between mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds and the mirror duality between quasi-Fano varieties and Landau-Ginzburg models. More precisely, we show that if a Calabi-Yau admits a so-called Tyurin degeneration to a union of two Fano varieties, then one should be able to construct a mirror to that Calabi-Yau by gluing together the Landau-Ginzburg models of those two Fano varieties. We provide evidence for this correspondence in a number of different settings, including Batyrev-Borisov mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces and Calabi-Yau threefolds, Dolgachev…
We discuss the behavior of Landau-Ginzburg models for toric orbifolds near the large volume limit. This enables us to express mirror symmetry as an isomorphism of Frobenius manifolds which aquire logarithmic poles along a boundary divisor. If the toric orbifold admits a crepant resolution we construct a global moduli space on the B-side and show that the associated tt^*-geometry exists globally.
In the paper "Birational geometry via moduli spaces" by I. Cheltsov, L. Katzarkov, and V. Przyjalkowski a new structure connecting toric degenerations of smooth Fano threefolds by projections was introduced; using Mirror Symmetry these connections were transferred to the side of Landau--Ginzburg models. In the paper mentioned above a nice way to connect of Picard rank one Fano threefolds was found. We apply this approach to all smooth Fano threefolds, connecting their degenerations by toric basic links. In particular, we find a lot of Gorenstein toric degenerations of smooth Fano threefolds we…
In this paper, we describe explicit relations in the symplectomorphism groups of toric hypersurfaces. To define the elements involved, we construct a proper stack of toric hypersurfaces with compactifying boundary representing toric hypersurface degenerations. Our relations arise through the study of the one dimensional strata of this stack. The results are then examined from the perspective of homological mirror symmetry where we view sequences of relations as maximal degenerations of Landau-Ginzburg models. We then study the B-model mirror to these degenerations, which gives a new mirror sym…
This is an outline of work in progress concerning an algebro-geometric form of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. We introduce a limited type of degeneration of Calabi-Yau manifolds, which we call toric degenerations. For these, the degenerate fibre is a union of toric varieties meeting along toric strata. In addition, the total space must look locally toric outside of some singular set. This is a generalisation of both Mumford-type degenerations of abelian varieties and degenerations of Calabi-Yau hypersurfacesin toric varieties. From such a degeneration, we construct a dual intersection g…
We use a formula of Bultot to compute the motivic zeta function for the toric degeneration of the quartic K3 and its Gross-Siebert mirror dual degeneration. We check for this explicit example that the identification of the logarithm of the monodromy and the mirror dual Lefschetz operator works at an integral level.
This is an extended example of the study of mirror symmetry via log schemes and the discrete Legendre transform on affine manifolds, introduced by myself and Bernd Siebert in "Mirror Symmetry via Logarithmic Degeneration Data I" (math.AG/0309070). In this paper, I consider the construction as it applies to the Batyrev-Borisov construction for complete intersections in toric varieties. Given a pair of reflexive polytopes with nef decompositions dual to each other, and given polarizations on the corresponding toric varieties, we construct examples of toric degenerations and their dual intersecti…
Calabi--Yau manifolds have risen to prominence in algebraic geometry, in part because of mirror symmetry and enumerative geometry. After Bershadsky--Cecotti--Ooguri--Vafa (BCOV), it is expected that genus 1 curve counting on a Calabi--Yau manifold is related to a conjectured invariant, only depending on the complex structure of the mirror, and built from Ray--Singer holomorphic analytic torsions. To this end, extending work of Fang--Lu--Yoshikawa in dimension 3, we introduce and study the BCOV invariant of Calabi--Yau manifolds of arbitrary dimension. To determine it, knowledge of its behaviou…
We discuss various topics on degenerations and special Lagrangian torus fibrations of Calabi-Yau manifolds in the context of mirror symmetry. A particular emphasis is on Tyurin degenerations and the Doran-Harder-Thompson conjecture, which builds a bridge between mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds and that for quasi-Fano manifolds. The proof of the conjecture is of interest in its own right and leads us to a few other related topics such as SYZ mirror symmetry, theta functions and geometric quantization. Inspired by the conjecture, we also propose a new construction of Landau-Ginzburg mod…
We derive the combinatorial representations of Picard group and deformation space of anti-canonical hypersurfaces of a toric variety using techniques in toric geometry. The mirror cohomology correspondence in the context of mirror symmetry is established for a pair of Calabi-Yau (CY) ${\sf n}$-spaces in toric varieties defined by reflexive polytopes for an arbitrary dimension ${\sf n}$. We further identify the Kahler cone of the toric variety and degeneration cone of CY hypersurfaces, by which the Kahler cone and degeneration cone for a mirror CY pair are interchangeable under mirror symmetry.…
We give a simple expression for the integral of the canonical holomorphic volume form in degenerating families of varieties constructed from wall structures and with central fiber a union of toric varieties. The cycles to integrate over are constructed from tropical 1-cycles in the intersection complex of the central fiber. One application is a proof that the mirror map for the canonical formal families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Gross and the second author is trivial. We also show that these families are the completion of an analytic family, without reparametrization, and that the…
We construct relative Gromov--Witten theory with expanded degenerations in the normal crossings setting and establish a degeneration formula for the resulting invariants. Given a simple normal crossings pair $(X,D)$, we show that there exist proper moduli spaces of curves in $X$ with prescribed boundary conditions along $D$, equipped with virtual classes. Each point in such a moduli space parameterizes a map from a nodal curve to an expanded degeneration of $X$ that is dimensionally transverse to the strata. In the context of maps to a simple normal crossings degeneration, the virtual fundamen…
We study the $E_1$-degeneration of the logarithmic Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence of the special fiber of a semistable family over a discrete valuation ring. On the one hand, we prove that the $E_1$-degeneration property is invariant under admissible blow-ups. Assuming functorial resolution of singularities over $\mathbb{Z}$, this implies that the $E_1$-degeneration property depends only on the generic fiber. On the other hand, we show by explicit examples that the decomposability of the logarithmic de Rham complex is not invariant under admissible blow-ups, which answer negatively an open…
We construct from a real affine manifold with singularities (a tropical manifold) a degeneration of Calabi-Yau manifolds. This solves a fundamental problem in mirror symmetry. Furthermore, a striking feature of our approach is that it yields an explicit and canonical order-by-order description of the degeneration via families of tropical trees. This gives complete control of the B-model side of mirror symmetry in terms of tropical geometry. For example, we expect our deformation parameter is a canonical coordinate, and expect period calculations to be expressible in terms of tropical curves. W…
We consider four approaches to relative Gromov-Witten theory and Gromov-Witten theory of degenerations: Jun Li's original approach, Bumsig Kim's logarithmic expansions, Abramovich-Fantechi's orbifold expansions, and a logarithmic theory without expansions due to Gross-Siebert and Abramovich-Chen. We exhibit morphisms relating these moduli spaces and prove that their virtual fundamental classes are compatible by pushforward through these morphisms. This implies that the Gromov-Witten invariants associated to all four of these theories are identical.
We give a spectral sequence to compute the logarithmic Hodge groups on a hypersurface type toric log Calabi-Yau space, compute its E_1 term explicitly in terms of tropical degeneration data and Jacobian rings and prove its degeneration at E_2 under mild assumptions. We prove the basechange of the affine Hodge groups and deduce it for the logarithmic Hodge groups in low dimensions. As an application, we prove a mirror symmetry duality in dimension two and four involving the usual Hodge numbers, the stringy Hodge numbers and the affine Hodge numbers.
In their papers published in 1993 and 1994, by expressing certain physical quantity in two distinct ways, Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa discovered a remarkable equivalence between Ray-Singer analytic torsion and elliptic instanton numbers for Calabi-Yau threefolds. After their discovery, in a paper published in 2008, a holomorphic torsion invariant for Calabi-Yau threefolds corresponding to the physical quantity was constructed and is called BCOV invariant. In this article, we study the asymptotic behavior of BCOV invariants for algebraic one-parameter degenerations of Calabi-Yau threefolds. …
There is a large number of different ways of constructing Calabi-Yau manifolds, as well as related non-geometric formulations, relevant in string compactifications. Showcasing this diversity, we discuss explicit deformation families of discretely distinct Hirzebruch hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n \times \mathbb{P}^1$ and identify their toric counterparts in detail. This precise isomorphism is then used to investigate some of their special divisors of interest, and in particular the secondary deformation family of their Calabi-Yau subspaces. In particular, most of the above so called Hirzebruch…
We show that a particular subfunctor of the relative logarithmic Picard functor for families of aligned, log semistable curves over a regular base scheme and smooth over an open dense subscheme of the base is representable by a smooth algebraic space which is slightly more separated than the classical relative Picard functor. We show the existence of its maximal separated quotient and give a new functorial interpretation in terms of logarithmic geometry for the Néron model of the relative Picard functor of the smooth locus when we restrict to transversal pull backs from spectra of discrete val…
We prove that the mirror map is trivial for the canonical formal families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Gross and the second author. In other words, the natural coordinate in a canonical Calabi-Yau family is a canonical coordinate in the sense of Hodge theory. This implies that the higher weight periods directly carry enumerative information with no further gauging necessary as opposed to the classical case. A side result is that the canonical formal families lift to analytic families. We compute the relevant period integrals explicitly. The cycles to integrate over are constructed fr…
We study the behaviour of rational curves tangent to a hypersurface under degenerations of the hypersurface. Working within the framework of logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory, we extend the degeneration formula to the logarithmically singular setting, producing a virtual class on the space of maps to the degenerate fibre. We then employ logarithmic deformation theory to express this class as an obstruction bundle integral over the moduli space of ordinary stable maps. This produces new refinements of the logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants, encoding the degeneration behaviour of tangent curves…
We prove an analog of Schmid's $\text{\rm SL}_2$-orbit theorem for a class of variations of mixed Hodge structure which includes logarithmic deformations, degenerations of 1-motives and archimedean heights. In particular, as consequence this theorem, we obtain a simple formula for the asymptotic behavior of the archimedean height of a flat family of algebraic cycles which depends only on the weight filtration and local monodromy.
In this article, we will give the Deligne 1-motives up to isogeny corresponding to the $\mathbb{Q}$-limiting mixed Hodge structures of semi-stable degenerations of curves, by using logarithmic structures and Steenbrink's cohomological mixed Hodge complexes associated to semi-stable degenerations of curves.
We prove that any affine, resp. polarized projective, spherical variety admits a flat degeneration to an affine, resp. polarized projective, toric variety. Motivated by Mirror Symmetry, we give conditions for the limit toric variety to be a Gorenstein Fano, and provide many examples. We also provide an explanation for the limits as boundary points of the moduli space of stable pairs whose existence is predicted by the Minimal Model Program.
This survey article begins with a discussion of the original form of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture, surveys the state of knowledge concering this conjecture, and explains how thinking about this conjecture naturally leads to the program initiated by the author and Bernd Siebert to study mirror symmetry via degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds and log structures.
We study hyperkahler metrics and hyperholomorphic connections of Hitchin's moduli spaces after Gaiotto, Moore and Neitzke. Their construction via the twistor technique produces intricate wall crossing behaviors. For certain four dimensional Hitchin's moduli spaces local models and degeneration to local models near singular fibers of the Hitchin's fibration are understood.
Gross and Siebert identified a class of singular Lagrangian torus fibrations which arise when smoothing toroidal degenerations, and which come in pairs that are related by mirror symmetry. We identify an immersed Lagrangian in each of these local models which supports a moduli space of objects that is isomorphic to the mirror space, and prove a homological mirror statement along the way.
We introduce a conjecture on homological mirror symmetry relating the symplectic topology of the complement of a smooth ample divisor in a K3 surface to algebraic geometry of type III degenerations, and prove it when the degree of the divisor is either 2 or 4.
This survey was written for the Current Developments in Mathematics conference, 2012, and is an updating of my article "The Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture: From torus fibrations to degenerations," in the Seattle 2005 proceedings. We trace progress and thinking about the SYZ conjecture since its introduction in 1996. We begin with the original differential geometric conjecture and its refinements, and explain how it led to the algebro-geometric program developed by myself and Siebert. After explaining the overall philosophy, I explain how recent results fit into this program.
We study mirror symmetry of a family of Calabi-Yau manifolds fibered by (1,8)-polarized abelian surfaces with Euler characteristic zero. By describing the parameter space globally, we find all expected boundary points (LCSLs), including those correspond to Fourier-Mukai partners. Applying mirror symmetry at each boundary point, we calculate Gromov-Witten invariants ($g\leq2$) and observe nice (quasi-)modular properties in their potential functions. We also describe degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds over each boundary point.
Using tropical geometry we propose a mirror construction for monomial degenerations of Calabi-Yau varieties in toric Fano varieties. The construction reproduces the mirror constructions by Batyrev for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and by Batyrev and Borisov for Calabi-Yau complete intersections. We apply the construction to Pfaffian examples and recover the mirror given by Rodland for the degree 14 Calabi-Yau threefold in PP^6 defined by the Pfaffians of a general linear 7x7 skew-symmetric matrix. We provide the necessary background knowledge entering into the tropical mirror construction such as t…
We construct a compactification of the moduli of toric pairs by using ideas from mirror symmetry. The secondary fan $Σ(Q)$ is used in [Ale02] to parametrize degenerations of toric pairs. It is also used in [CLS11] to control the variation of GIT. We verify the prediction of mirror symmetry that $Σ(Q)$ for the moduli of toric pairs is equal to the Mori fan of the relative minimal models of the mirror family. As a result, we give an explicit construction of the compactification $\mathscr{T}_Q$ of the moduli of toric pairs which is the normalization of the compactification in [Ale02] and [Ols08].
We describe mirror symmetry for weak toric Fano manifolds as an equivalence of D-modules equipped with certain filtrations. We discuss in particular the logarithmic degeneration behavior at the large radius limit point, and express the mirror correspondence as an isomorphism of Frobenius manifolds with logarithmic poles. The main tool is an identification of the Gauss-Manin system of the mirror Landau-Ginzburg model with a hypergeometric D-module, and a detailed study of a natural filtration defined on this differential system. We obtain a solution of the Birkhoff problem for lattices defined …
