We construct from a real affine manifold with singularities (a tropical manifold) a degeneration of Calabi-Yau manifolds. This solves a fundamental problem in mirror symmetry. Furthermore, a striking feature of our approach is that it yields an explicit and canonical order-by-order description of the degeneration via families of tropical trees.
This gives complete control of the B-model side of mirror symmetry in terms of tropical geometry. For example, we expect our deformation parameter is a canonical coordinate, and expect period calculations to be expressible in terms of tropical curves. We anticipate this will lead to a proof of mirror symmetry via tropical methods.
This paper is the key step of the program we initiated in math.AG/0309070.
Affine rotation surfaces are a generalization of the well-known surfaces of revolution. Affine rotation surfaces arise naturally within the framework of affine differential geometry, a field started by Blaschke in the first decades of the past century. Affine rotations are the affine equivalents of Euclidean rotations, and include certain shears as well as Euclidean rotations. Affine rotation surfaces are surfaces invariant under affine rotations. In this paper, we analyze several properties of algebraic affine rotation surfaces and, by using some notions and results from affine differential g…
We define certain extensions of Jacobi groups of $A_n$, prove an analogue of Chevalley Theorem for their invariants, and construct a Dubrovin Frobenius structure on it orbit space.
In this paper we discuss the geometry of affine Deligne Lusztig varieties with very special level structure, determining their dimension and connected and irreducible components. As application, we prove the Grothendieck conjecture for Shimura varieties with very special level at $p$ and a function field analogue.
Formulated problems concern the following topics: (1) Birationally nonequivalent linear actions; (2) Cayley degrees of simple algebraic groups; (3) Singularities of two-dimensional quotients.
Let $L^0$ be the algebra of equivalence classes of real valued random variables on a given probability space, and $(L^0)^n$ the $n$-ary Cartesian power of $L^0$ for each integer $n\geq 2$. We consider $(L^0)^n$ as a free module over $L^0$ and study affine geometry in $(L^0)^n$. One of our main results states that: an injective mapping $T: (L^0)^n\to (L^0)^n$ which is local and maps each $L^0$-line onto an $L^0$-line must be an $L^0$-affine linear mapping. The other main result states that: a bijective mapping $T: (L^0)^n\to (L^0)^n$ which is local and maps each $L^0$-line segment onto an $L^0$…
By recasting metrical geometry in a purely algebraic setting, both Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries can be studied over a general field with an arbitrary quadratic form. Both an affine and a projective version of this new theory are introduced here, and the main formulas extend those of rational trigonometry in the plane. This gives a unified, computational model of both spherical and hyperbolic geometries, allows the extension of many results of Euclidean geometry to the relativistic setting, and provides a new metrical approach to algebraic geometry.
The main goal of this thesis is to study $\mathbb{K}$-uniruled sets that appear in affine geometry. At the beginning we discuss the property of $\mathbb{K}$-uniruledness and its equivalent conditions. Then we bound from above the degree of $\mathbb{K}$-uniruledness of the non-properness set of a polynomial map in terms of its degree and degree of $\mathbb{K}$-uniruledness of the domain variety. At the end we show that some sets associated with the set of fixed points of an algebraic group action are $\mathbb{K}$-uniruled.
In this article, we shall discuss the solution to the Zariski Cancellation Problem in positive characteristic, various approaches taken so far towards the possible solution in characteristic zero, and several other questions related to this problem.
Affine varieties among all algebraic varieties have simple structures. For example, an affine variety does not contain any complete algebraic curve. In this paper we study affine related properties of strata of $k$-differentials on smooth curves which parameterize sections of the $k$-th power of the canonical line bundle with prescribed orders of zeros and poles. We show that if there is a prescribed pole of order at least $k$, then the corresponding stratum does not contain any complete curve. Moreover, we explore the amusing question whether affine invariant manifolds arising from Teichmülle…
In this first work dedicated to the generalisation of classic algebraic geometry to non algebraically closed fields and axiomatisable classes of fields, we develop the foundations for equiresidual algebraic geometry (EQAG), i.e. algebraic geometry over any commutative field $k$, algebraically closed or not. This is possible thanks to the existence in non algebraically closed fields of many normic forms, i.e. homogeneous polynomials with no non-trivial zero rational in $k$, and relies on an equiresidual generalisation of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz and the Jacobson radical in finitely presented $…
I extend the framework of rigid analytic geometry to the setting of algebraic geometry relative to monoids, and study the associated notions of separated, proper, and overconvergent morphisms. The category of affine manifolds embeds as a subcategory defined by simple algebraic (normal) and topological (overconvergent) criteria. The affine manifold of a rigid space can be recovered either as a set of `Novikov field' points or as a universal Hausdorff quotient. After base change to any topological field, one obtains a `toric' analytic space that fibres over the affine manifold.
We prove that the nonvarying strata of abelian and quadratic differentials in [CM1, CM2] have trivial tautological rings and are affine varieties. We also prove that strata of $k$-differentials of infinite area are affine varieties for all $k$. Vanishing of homology in degree higher than the complex dimension follows as a consequence for these affine strata. Moreover we prove that the stratification of the Hodge bundle for abelian and quadratic differentials of finite area is extremal in the sense that merging two zeros in each stratum leads to an extremal effective divisor in the boundary. We study basic geometric properties of some group analogue of affine Springer fibers and compare with the classical Lie algebra affine Springer fibers. The main purpose is to formulate a conjecture that relates the number of irreducible components of such varieties for a reductive group $G$ to certain weight multiplicities defined by the Langlands dual group $\hat{G}$. We prove our conjecture in the case of unramified conjugacy class.
By the geometric Satake isomorphism of Mirkovic and Vilonen, decomposition numbers for reductive groups can be interpreted as decomposition numbers for equivariant perverse sheaves on the complex affine Grassmannian of the Langlands dual group. Using a description of the minimal degenerations of the affine Grassmannian obtained by Malkin, Ostrik and Vybornov, we are able to recover geometrically some decomposition numbers for reductive groups. In the other direction, we can use some decomposition numbers for reductive groups to prove geometric results, such as a new proof of non-smoothness res…
We study integral dlt models of a proper C((t))-variety X along a toric stratum of the special fiber. We prove that the associated Berkovich retraction - from the non-archimedean analytification of X onto the dual complex of the model - is an affinoid torus fibration around the simplex corresponding to the toric stratum, which extends results from Nicaise-Xu-Yu. This allows us to construct new types of non-archimedean retractions for maximally degenerate families of quartic K3 surfaces and quintic 3-folds, by gluing several non-archimedean SYZ fibrations, each one toric along a codimension one…
Positive configurations of points in the affine building were introduced in \cite{Le} as the basic object needed to define higher laminations. We start by giving a self-contained, elementary definition of positive configurations of points in the affine building and their basic properties. Then we study the geometry of these configurations. The canonical functions on triples of flags that were defined by Fock and Goncharov in \cite{FG1} have a tropicalization that gives functions on triples of points in the affine Grassmannian. One expects that these functions, though of algebro-geometric origi…
The study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties originally arose from arithmetic geometry, but many problems on affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are purely Lie-theoretic in nature. This survey deals with recent progress on several important problems on affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The emphasis is on the Lie-theoretic aspect, while some connections and applications to arithmetic geometry will also be mentioned.
This article is a survey on ind-varieties and ind-groups introduced by Shafarevich in 1965, with a special emphasis on automorphism groups of affine varieties and actions of ind-groups on ind-varieties. We give precise definitions and complete proofs, including several known results. The survey contains many examples and also some questions which came up during our work on the subject. Among the new results we show that for an affine variety X the automorphism group Aut(X) is always locally closed in the ind-semigroup End(X) of all endomorphisms, and we give an example of a strict closed subgr…
Given an affine variety X and a finite dimensional vector space of regular functions L on X, we associate a convex body to (X, L) such that its volume is responsible for the number of solutions of a generic system of functions from L. This is a far reaching generalization of usual theory of Newton polytopes (which is concerned with toric varieties). As applications we give new, simple and transparent proofs of some well-known theorems in both algebraic geometry (e.g. Hodge Index Theorem) and convex geometry (e.g. Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality). Our main tools are classical Hilbert theory on de…
We study certain pencils of del Pezzo surfaces generated by a smooth del Pezzo surface S of degree less or equal to 3 anti-canonically embedded into a weighted projective space P and an appropriate multiple of a hyperplane H. Our main observation is that every minimal model program relative to the morphism lifting such pencil on a suitable resolution of its indeterminacies preserves the open subset P H â A^3. As an application, we obtain projective completions of A^3 into del Pezzo fibrations over P^1 of every degree less or equal to 4. We also obtain completions of A^3 into Mori conic bundles…
A cusp singularity is an elliptic surface singularity whose minimal resolution is a cycle of smooth rational curves meeting transversely. Cusp singularities come in naturally dual pairs. In 1981, Looijenga proved that whenever a cusp singularity is smoothable, the minimal resolution of the dual cusp is an anticanonical divisor of some smooth rational surface. He conjectured the converse. Recent work of Gross, Hacking, and Keel has proven Looijenga's conjecture using methods from mirror symmetry. This paper provides an alternative proof of Looijenga's conjecture based on a combinatorial criteri…
We give a concrete description of the category of etale algebras over the ring of Witt vectors of a given finite length with entries in an arbitrary ring. We do this not only for the classical p-typical and big Witt vector functors but also for variants of these functors which are in a certain sense their analogues over arbitrary local and global fields. The basic theory of these generalized Witt vectors is developed from the point of view of commuting Frobenius lifts and their universal properties, which is a new approach even for the classical Witt vectors. The larger purpose of this paper i…
In this paper, we show that any 3-dimensional normal affine quasihomogeneous SL(2)-variety can be described as a categorical quotient of a 4-dimensional affine hypersurface. Moreover, we show that the Cox ring of an arbitrary 3-dimensional normal affine quasihomogeneous SL(2)-variety has a unique defining equation. This allows us to construct SL(2)-equivariant flips by different GIT-quotients of hypersurfaces. Using the theory of spherical varieties, we describe SL(2)-flips by means of 2-dimensional colored cones.
We develop algebraic geometry for general Segal's Gamma-rings and show that this new theory unifies two approaches we had considered earlier on (for a geometry under Spec Z). The starting observation is that the category obtained by gluing together the category of commutative rings and that of pointed commutative monoids, that we used in our previous work to define F1-schemes, is naturally a full subcategory of the category of Segal's Gamma-rings. In this paper we develop the affine case of this general algebraic geometry: one distinctive feature is that the spectrum Spec(A) of a Gamma-ring is…
We relate the geometry of Schubert varieties in twisted affine Grassmannian and the nilpotent varieties in symmetric spaces. This extends some results of Achar-Henderson in the twisted setting. We also get some applications to the geometry of the order 2 nilpotent varieties in certain classical symmetric spaces.
In the last decades affine algebraic varieties and Stein manifolds with big (infinite-dimensional) automorphism groups have been intensively studied. Several notions expressing that the automorphisms group is big have been proposed. All of them imply that the manifold in question is an Oka-Forstnerič manifold. This important notion has also recently merged from the intensive studies around the homotopy principle in Complex Analysis. This homotopy principle, which goes back to the 1930's, has had an enormous impact on the development of the area of Several Complex Variables and the number of it…
Let $G$ be a semisimple, simply connected, algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ with Lie algebra $\frak g$. We study the spaces of parahoric subalgebras of a given type containing a fixed nil-elliptic element of $\frak g\otimes k((π))$, i.e. fixed point varieties on affine flag manifolds. We define a natural class of $k^*$-actions on affine flag manifolds, generalizing actions introduced by Lusztig and Smelt. We formulate a condition on a pair $(N,f)$ consisting of $N\in\frak{g}\otimes k((π))$ and a $k^*$-action $f$ of the specified type which guarantees that $f$ induces an a…
Mutations of the cluster variables generating the cluster algebra of type $A^{(2)}_2$ reduce to a two-dimensional discrete integrable system given by a quartic birational map. The invariant curve of the map is a singular quartic curve, and its resolution of the singularity induces a discrete integrable system on a conic governed by a cubic birational map conjugate to the cluster mutations of type $A^{(2)}_2$. Moreover, it is shown that the conic is also the invariant curve of the quadratic birational map arising from the cluster mutations of type $A^{(1)}_1$ and the two birational maps on the …
We study the algebraic geometry and combinatorics of the central degeneration (the degeneration that shows up in local models of Shimura varieties and Gaitsgory's central sheaves) in type A. More specifically, we elucidate the central degeneration of semi-infinite orbits and explain its relations with Levi restriction. Also, we discuss the central degeneration of Mirkovi$\acute{\text{c}}$-Vilonen cycles in the affine Grassmannian, and the corresponding transformations of Mirkovi$\acute{\text{c}}$-Vilonen polytopes. In addition, we shed some light on the geometry of Iwahori MV cycles in the aff…
Mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau manifolds can be understood via a Legendre duality between a pair of certain affine manifolds with singularities called tropical manifolds. In this article, we study conifold transitions from the point of view of Gross and Siebert. We introduce the notions of tropical nodal singularity, tropical conifolds, tropical resolutions and smoothings. We interpret known global obstructions to the complex smoothing and symplectic small resolution of compact nodal Calabi-Yaus in terms of certain tropical $2$-cycles containing the nodes in their associated tropical conifolds.…
Correlation matrices are standardized covariance matrices. They form an affine space of symmetric matrices defined by setting the diagonal entries to one. We study the geometry of maximum likelihood estimation for this model and linear submodels that encode additional symmetries. We also consider the problem of minimizing two closely related functions of the covariance matrix: the Stein's loss and the symmetrized Stein's loss. Unlike the Gaussian log-likelihood these two functions are convex and hence admit a unique positive definite optimum. Some of our results hold for general affine covaria…
