In this paper, we show that any 3-dimensional normal affine quasihomogeneous SL(2)-variety can be described as a categorical quotient of a 4-dimensional affine hypersurface. Moreover, we show that the Cox ring of an arbitrary 3-dimensional normal affine quasihomogeneous SL(2)-variety has a unique defining equation. This allows us to construct SL(2)-equivariant flips by different GIT-quotients of hypersurfaces. Using the theory of spherical varieties, we describe SL(2)-flips by means of 2-dimensional colored cones.
We discuss the equivariant Burnside group and related new invariants in equivariant birational geometry, with a special emphasis on applications in low dimensions.
We develop the formalism of universal torsors in equivariant birational geometry and apply it to produce new examples of nonbirational but stably birational actions of finite groups.
Let X be a smooth projective variety with the action of the n dimensional torus. The article describes the moduli space of torus equivariant morphisms from stable toric varieties into X as the inverse limit of the GIT quotients of X and their flips when these spaces are enhanced with a naturally associated Deligne-Mumford stack structure. This description is used for constructing a class in the Chow group of the moduli space of dimension dim(X)-n which is invariant to equivariant deformations of X.
Equivariant compactifications of reductive groups can be described by combinatorial data. On the other hand, equivariant compactifications of the additive group G^n_a are more complicated in at least two respects. First, they often admit moduli. Second, even simple varieties (like projective spaces) admit many different structures as equivariant compactifications of the additive group. We give a dictionary relating Artinian local rings, certain systems of partial differential equations, and equivariant compactifications of G^n_a. As an application, we classify the structures on varieties like …
Fix a finite group $G$. We seek to classify varieties with $G$-action equivariantly birational to a representation of $G$ on affine or projective space. Our focus is odd-dimensional smooth complete intersections of two quadrics, relating the equivariant rationality problem with analogous Diophantine questions over nonclosed fields. We explore how invariants -- both classical cohomological invariants and recent symbol constructions -- control rationality in some cases.
In this paper we prove that there are exactly two $G$-minimal surfaces which are $G$-birational to the quintic del Pezzo surface, where $G \cong C_5 \rtimes C_4$. These surfaces are the quintic del Pezzo surface itself and the surface $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$.
We use geometry to give a short proof of an equivariant Pieri rule in the classical flag manifold. This rule is due to Robinson, who gave an algebraic proof.
These are lecture notes from the IMPANGA 2010 Summer School. The lectures survey some of the main features of equivariant cohomology at an introductory level. The first part is an overview, including basic definitions and examples. In the second lecture, I discuss one of the most useful aspects of the theory: the possibility of localizing at fixed points without losing information. The third lecture focuses on Grassmannians, and describes some recent positivity results about their equivariant cohomology rings.
In this expository article we give a categorical definition of the integral cohomology ring of a stack. We show that for quotient stacks the categorical cohomology may be identified with equivariant cohomology. Via this identification we show that for Deligne-Mumford quotient stacks this cohomology is rationally isomorphic to the rational cohomology of the coarse moduli space. The theory is presented with a focus on the stacks of smooth and stable curves.
For a birational log Fano contraction, it is conjectured an inequality between the dimension of its exceptional locus and the minimal log discrepancy over the locus. The conjecture follows from the existence of the flip for the contraction and another conjecture about the maximum of minimal log discripancy in given dimension; in particular, it holds in small dimensions (up to 4), and some special cases. It is illustrated by some examples.
We examine the structure of the cotangent bundle $T^{*}X$ of an algebraic variety $X$ acted on by a reductive group $G$ from the viewpoint of equivariant symplectic geometry. In particular, we construct an equivariant symplectic covering of $T^{*}X$ by the cotangent bundle of a certain variety of horospheres in $X$, and integrate the invariant collective motion on $T^{*}X$. These results are based on a "local structure theorem" describing the action of a certain parabolic in $G$ on an open subset of $X$, which is interesting by itself.
Let $X$ denote an equivariant embedding of a connected reductive group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$. Let $B$ denote a Borel subgroup of $G$ and let $Z$ denote a $B \times B$-orbit closure in $X$. When the characteristic of $k$ is positive and $X$ is projective we prove that $Z$ is globally $F$-regular. As a consequence, $Z$ is normal and Cohen-Macaulay for arbitrary $X$ and arbitrary characteristics. Moreover, in characteristic zero it follows that $Z$ has rational singularities. This extends earlier results by the second author and M. Brion.
We here present rudiments of an approach to geometric actions in noncommutative algebraic geometry, based on geometrically admissible actions of monoidal categories. This generalizes the usual (co)module algebras over Hopf algebras which provide affine examples. We introduce a compatibility of monoidal actions and localizations which is a distributive law. There are satisfactory notions of equivariant objects, noncommutative fiber bundles and quotients in this setup.
We develop a version of Hodge theory for a large class of smooth formally proper quotient stacks $X/G$ analogous to Hodge theory for smooth projective schemes. We show that the noncommutative Hodge-de Rham sequence for the category of equivariant coherent sheaves degenerates. This spectral sequence converges to the periodic cyclic homology, which we canonically identify with the topological equivariant K-theory of $X$ with respect to a maximal compact subgroup of $G$, equipping the latter with a canonical pure Hodge structure. We also establish Hodge-de Rham degeneration for categories of matr…
To any affine scheme with a $\mathbb{G}_m$-action, we provide a Bousfield colocalization on the equivariant derived category of modules by constructing, via homotopical methods, an idempotent integral kernel. This endows the equivariant derived category with a canonical semi-orthogonal decomposition. As a special case, we demonstrate that grade-restriction windows appear as a consequence of this construction, giving a new proof of wall-crossing equivalences which works over an arbitrary base. The construction globalizes to yield interesting integral transforms associated to $D$-flips.
For equivariant stable homotopy theory, equivariant KK-theory and equivariant derived categories, we show how restriction to a subgroup of finite index yields a finite commutative separable extension, analogous to finite étale extensions in algebraic geometry.
We study equivariant contact structures on complex projective varieties arising as partial flag varieties $G/P$, where $G$ is a connected, simply-connected complex simple group of type $ADE$ and $P$ is a parabolic subgroup. We prove a special case of the LeBrun-Salamon conjecture for partial flag varieties of these types. The result can be deduced from Boothby's classification of compact simply-connected complex contact manifolds with transitive action by contact automorphisms, but our proof is completely independent and relies on properties of $G$-equivariant vector bundles on $G/P$. A byprod…
We give explicit formulas for torus-equivariant fundamental classes of closed $K$-orbits on the flag variety $G/B$ when $G$ is one of the classical groups $SL(n,\C)$, $SO(n,\C)$, or $Sp(2n,\C)$, and $K$ is a symmetric subgroup of $G$. We describe parametrizations of each orbit set and the combinatorics of its weak order, allowing us to compute formulas for the equivariant classes of all remaining orbit closures using divided difference operators. In each of the cases in type A, we realize the $K$-orbit closures as universal degeneracy loci of a certain type, involving a vector bundle $V$ over …

We show how to use information about the equations defining secant varieties to smooth projective varieties in order to construct a natural collection of birational transformations. These were first constructed as flips in the case of curves by M. Thaddeus via Geometric Invariant Theory, and the first flip in the sequence was constructed by the author for varieties of arbitrary dimension in an earlier paper. We expose the finer structure of a second flip; again for varieties of arbitrary dimension. We also prove a result on the cubic generation of the secant variety and give some conjectures o…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group acting on an irreducible normal algebraic variety $X$. We give a slightly improved version of local structure theorems obtained by F.Knop and D.A.Timashev that describe an action of some parabolic subgroup of $G$ on an open subset of $X$. We also extend various results of E.B.Vinberg and D.A.Timashev on the set of horospheres in $X$. We construct a family of nongeneric horospheres in $X$ and a variety $\Hor$ parameterizing this family, such that there is a rational $G$-equivariant symplectic covering of cotangent vector bundles $T^*\Hor \dashrightarrow T^…
For $G$ an algebraic group definable over a model of $\operatorname{ACVF}$, or more generally a definable subgroup of an algebraic group, we study the stable completion $\widehat{G}$ of $G$, as introduced by Loeser and the second author. For $G$ connected and stably dominated, assuming $G$ commutative or that the valued field is of equicharacteristic 0, we construct a pro-definable $G$-equivariant strong deformation retraction of $\widehat{G}$ onto the generic type of $G$. For $G=S$ a semiabelian variety, we construct a pro-definable $S$-equivariant strong deformation retraction of $\widehat{S…
Motivated by the cohomological construction for the BV formalism from physics, this thesis asks how to perform the intersections and quotients appearing in the BV construction. This leads to the study of the derived symplectic reduction and the extension of these classical notions for group action and infinitesimal actions of Lie algebroids. In this context, we generalize the classical notion of moment maps for global and infinitesimal actions. We then study examples of such moment maps and their derived reductions and produce new shifted examples through a procedure of derived Lagrangian inte…
We give a new proof of the Jantzen sum formula for integral representations of Chevalley schemes over Spec Z. This is done by applying the fixed point formula of Lefschetz type in Arakelov geometry to generalized flag varieties. Our proof involves the computation of the equivariant Ray-Singer torsion for all equivariant bundles over complex homogeneous spaces. Furthermore, we find several explicit formulae for the global height of any generalized flag variety.
We consider aspects of the geometry and topology of nilpotent orbits in finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. In particular, we give the equivariant cohomologies of the regular and minimal nilpotent orbits with respect to the action of a maximal compact torus of the overall group in question.
This paper applies the decomposition theorem in intersection cohomology to geometric invariant theory quotients, relating the intersection cohomology of the quotient to that of the semistable points for the action. Suppose a connected reductive complex algebraic group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective variety $X$. We prove that if $1 \to N \to G \to H \to 1$ is a short exact sequence of connected reductive groups, and $X^{ss}$ the set of semistable points for the action of $N$ on $X$, then the $H$-equivariant intersection cohomology of the geometric invariant theory quotient $X^{ss}//N…

Let G be a reductive group; in this note we give an interpretation of the dynamical Weyl group of of the Langlands dual group $\check{G}$ defined by Etingof and Varchenko in terms of the geometry of the affine Grassmannian Gr of G. In this interpretation the dynamical parameters of Etingof and Varchenko correspond to equivariant parameters with respect to certain natural torus acting on Gr. We also present a conjectural generalization of our results to the case of affine Kac-Moody groups.
We study quantum geometry of Nakajima quiver varieties of two different types - framed A-type quivers and ADHM quivers. While these spaces look completely different we find a surprising connection between equivariant K-theories thereof with a nontrivial match between their equivariant parameters. In particular, we demonstrate that quantum equivariant K-theory of $A_n$ quiver varieties in a certain $n\to\infty$ limit reproduces equivariant K-theory of the Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb{C}^2$. We analyze the correspondence from the point of view of enumerative geometry, representation theo…
