We consider nonintersecting random walks satisfying the condition that the increments have a finite moment generating function. We prove that in a certain limiting regime where the number of walks and the number of time steps grow to infinity, several limiting distributions of the walks at the mid-time behave as the eigenvalues of random Hermitian matrices as the dimension of the matrices grows to infinity.
We study the $β$ analogue of the nonintersecting Poisson random walks. We derive a stochastic differential equation of the Stieltjes transform of the empirical measure process, which can be viewed as a dynamical version of the Nekrasov's equation in [7, Section 4]. We find that the empirical measure process converges weakly in the space of cádlág measure-valued processes to a deterministic process, characterized by the quantized free convolution, as introduced in [11]. For suitable initial data, we prove that the rescaled empirical measure process converges weakly in the space of distributions…
In this paper we study height fluctuations of random lozenge tilings of polygonal domains on the triangular lattice through nonintersecting Bernoulli random walks. For a large class of polygons which have exactly one horizontal upper boundary edge, we show that these random height functions converge to a Gaussian Free Field as predicted by Kenyon and Okounkov [28]. A key ingredient of our proof is a dynamical version of the discrete loop equations as introduced by Borodin, Guionnet and Gorin [5], which might be of independent interest.
Consider a continuous time random walk in $\mathbb{Z}$ with independent and exponentially distributed jumps $\pm1$. The model in this paper consists in an infinite number of such random walks starting from the complement of $\{-m,-m+1,\ldots,m-1,m\}$ at time -t, returning to the same starting positions at time t, and conditioned not to intersect. This yields a determinantal process, whose gap probabilities are given by the Fredholm determinant of a kernel. Thus this model consists of two groups of random walks, which are contained within two ellipses which, with the choice $m\simeq2t$ to leadi…
Consider an N-dimensional Markov chain obtained from N one-dimensional random walks by Doob h-transform with the q-Vandermonde determinant. We prove that as N becomes large, these Markov chains converge to an infinite-dimensional Feller Markov process. The dynamical correlation functions of the limit process are determinantal with an explicit correlation kernel. The key idea is to identify random point processes on Z with q-Gibbs measures on Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes and construct Markov processes on the latter space. Independently, we analyze the large time behavior of PushASEP with finitely ma…
The system of one-dimensional symmetric simple random walks, in which none of walkers have met others in a given time period, is called the vicious walker model. It was introduced by Michael Fisher and applications of the model to various wetting and melting phenomena were described in his Boltzmann medal lecture. In the present report, we explain interesting connections among representation theory, probability theory, and random matrix theory using this simple diffusion particle system. Each vicious walk of $N$ walkers is represented by an $N$-tuple of nonintersecting lattice paths on the spa…
We consider the diffusion scaling limit of the vicious walker model that is a system of nonintersecting random walks. We prove a functional central limit theorem for the model and derive two types of nonintersecting Brownian motions, in which the nonintersecting condition is imposed in a finite time interval $(0,T]$ for the first type and in an infinite time interval $(0,\infty)$ for the second type, respectively. The limit process of the first type is a temporally inhomogeneous diffusion, and that of the second type is a temporally homogeneous diffusion that is identified with a Dyson's model…
Nonintersecting Brownian bridges on the unit circle form a determinantal stochastic process exhibiting random matrix statistics for large numbers of walkers. We investigate the effect of adding a drift term to walkers on the circle conditioned to start and end at the same position. For each return time $T<π^2$ we show that if the absolute value of the drift is less than a critical value then the expected total winding number is asymptotically zero. In addition, we compute the asymptotic distribution of total winding numbers in the double-scaling regime in which the expected total winding is fi…
As an image of the many-to-one map of loop-erasing operation $\LE$ of random walks, a self-avoiding walk (SAW) is obtained. The loop-erased random walk (LERW) model is the statistical ensemble of SAWs such that the weight of each SAW $ζ$ is given by the total weight of all random walks $π$ which are inverse images of $ζ$, $\{π: \LE(π)=ζ\}$. We regard the Brownian paths as the continuum limits of random walks and consider the statistical ensemble of loop-erased Brownian paths (LEBPs) as the continuum limits of the LERW model. Following the theory of Fomin on nonintersecting LERWs, we introduce …
We consider a non-nestling random walk in a product random environment. We assume an exponential moment for the step of the walk, uniformly in the environment. We prove an invariance principle (functional central limit theorem) under almost every environment for the centered and diffusively scaled walk. The main point behind the invariance principle is that the quenched mean of the walk behaves subdiffusively.
We prove a conjecture of Toth and Veto about the weak convergence of the self repelling random walk with directed edges under diffusive scaling to a uniform distribution.
We consider simple random walk on a realization of an Erdős-Rényi graph that is asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) connected. We show a Central Limit Theorem (CLT) for the average starting hitting time, i.e. the expected time it takes the random walker on average to first hit a vertex $j$ when starting in a fixed vertex $i$. The average is taken with respect to $π_j$, the invariant measure of the random walk.
We consider the random walk among random conductances on Z^d. We assume that the conductances are independent, identically distributed and uniformly bounded away from 0 and infinity. We obtain a quantitative version of the central limit theorem for this random walk, which takes the form of a Berry-Esseen estimate with speed t^{-1/10} for d < 3, and speed t^{-1/5} otherwise, up to logarithmic corrections.
We consider a symmetric random walk on the $ν$-dimensional lattice, whose exit probability from the origin is modified by an antisymmetric perturbation and prove the local central limit theorem for this process. A short-range correction to diffusive behaviour appears in any dimension along with a long-range correction in the one-dimensional case.
We consider a multidimensional random walk in a product random environment with bounded steps, transience in some spatial direction, and high enough moments on the regeneration time. We prove an invariance principle, or functional central limit theorem, under almost every environment for the diffusively scaled centered walk. The main point behind the invariance principle is that the quenched mean of the walk behaves subdiffusively.
In this paper, we consider a generalization of the elephant random walk model. Compared to the usual elephant random walk, an interesting feature of this model is that the step sizes form a sequence of positive independent and identically distributed random variables instead of a fixed constant. For this model, we establish the law of the iterated logarithm, the central limit theorem, and we obtain rates of convergence in the central limit theorem with respect to the Kologmorov, Zolotarev and Wasserstein distances. We emphasize that, even in case of the usual elephant random walk, our results …
Recently, Ishiwata, Kawabi and Kotani [2] proved two kinds of central limit theorems for non-symmetric random walks on crystal lattices from the view point of discrete geometric analysis. In the present paper, we obtain yet another kind of the central limit theorem for them. Our argument is based on a measure-change technique due to Alexopoulos [1].
Unlike classical simple random walks, one-dimensional random walks in random environments (RWRE) are known to have a wide array of potential limiting distributions. Under certain assumptions, however, it is known that CLT-like limiting distributions hold for the walk under both the quenched and averaged measures. We give upper bounds on the rates of convergence for the quenched central limit theorems for both the hitting time and position of the RWRE with polynomial rates of convergence that depend on the distribution on environments.
In this note, we prove a quenched functional central limit theorem for a biased random walk on a supercritical Galton-Watson tree with leaves. This extends a result of Peres and Zeitouni (2008) where the case without leaves is considered. A conjecture of Ben Arous and Fribergh (2016) suggests an upper bound on the bias which we observe to be sharp.
We prove that a planar random walk with bounded increments and mean zero which is conditioned to stay in a cone converges weakly to the corresponding Brownian meander if and only if the tail distribution of the exit time from the cone is regularly varying. This condition is satisfied in many natural examples.
We consider a simple random walk (dimension one, nearest neighbour jumps) in a quenched random environment. The goal of this work is to provide sufficient conditions, stated in terms of properties of the environment, under which the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) holds for the position of the walk. Verifying these conditions leads to a complete solution of the problem in the case of independent identically distributed environments as well as in the case of uniformly ergodic (and thus also weakly mixing) environments.
We prove CLTs for biased randomly trapped random walks in one dimension. In particular, we will establish an annealed invariance principal by considering a sequence of regeneration times under the assumption that the trapping times have finite second moment. In a quenched environment, an environment dependent centring is determined which is necessary to achieve a central limit theorem. As our main motivation, we apply these results to biased walks on subcritical Galton-Watson trees conditioned to survive and prove a tight bound on the bias required to obtain such limiting behaviour.
We prove the quenched version of the central limit theorem for the displacement of a random walk in doubly stochastic random environment, under the $H_{-1}$-condition, with slightly stronger, $L^{2+\varepsilon}$ (rather than $L^2$) integrability condition on the stream tensor. On the way we extend Nash's moment bound to the non-reversible, divergence-free drift case.
The one-dimensional elephant random walk is a typical model of discrete-time random walk with step-reinforcement, and is introduced by Schütz and Trimper (2004). It has a parameter $α\in (-1,1)$: The case $α=0$ corresponds to the simple symmetric random walk, and when $α>0$ (resp. $α<0$), the mean displacement of the walker at time $n$ grows (resp. vanishes) like $n^α$. The walk admits a phase transition at $α=1/2$ from the diffusive behavior to the superdiffusive behavior. In this paper, we study the rate of the moment convergence in the central limit theorem for the position of the walker wh…
We prove a quenched local central limit theorem for continuous-time random walks in $\mathbb Z^d, d\ge 2$, in a uniformly-elliptic time-dependent balanced random environment which is ergodic under space-time shifts. We also obtain Gaussian upper and lower bounds for quenched and (positive and negative) moment estimates of the transition probabilities and asymptotics of the discrete Green function.
We consider the rates of convergence of the quenched central limit theorem for hitting times of one-dimensional random walks in a random environment. Previous results had identified polynomial upper bounds for the rates of decay which are sometimes slower than $n^{-1/2}$ (the optimal rate in the classical Berry-Esseen estimates). Here we prove that the previous upper bounds are in fact the best possible polynomial rates for the quenched CLT.
Random walks in random scenery are processes defined by $$Z_n:=\sum_{k=1}^nω_{S_k}$$ where $S:=(S_k,k\ge 0)$ is a random walk evolving in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and $ω:=(ω_x, x\in{\mathbb Z}^d)$ is a sequence of i.i.d. real random variables. Under suitable assumptions on the random walk $S$ and the random scenery $ω$, almost surely with respect to $ω$, the correctly renormalized sequence $(Z_n)_{n\geq 1}$ is proved to converge in distribution to a centered Gaussian law with explicit variance.
Recently, the elephant random walk has attracted a lot of attentions. A wide range of literature is available for the asymptotic behavior of the process, such as the central limit theorems, functional limit theorems and the law of iterated logarithm. However, there is not result concerning Wassertein-1 distance for the normal approximations. In this paper, we show that the Wassertein-1 distance in the central limit theorem is totally different when a memory parameter $p$ belongs to one of the three cases $0< p < 1/2,$ $1/2< p<3/4$ and $p=3/4.$
We consider a branching random walk on $d$-dimensional real space with immigration in a time-dependent random environment. Let $Z_n(\mathbf t)$ be the so-called partition function of the process, namely, the moment generating function of the counting measure describing the dispersion of individuals at time $n$. For $\mathbf t$ fixed, the logarithm $\log Z_n(\mathbf t)$ satisfies a central limit theorem. By studying the logarithmic moments of the intrinsic submartingale of the system and its convergence rates, we establish the uniform and non-uniform Berry-Esseen bounds corresponding to the cen…
The Central Limit Theorem (CLT) for additive functionals of Markov chains is a well known result with a long history. In this paper we present applications to two finite-memory versions of the Elephant Random Walk, solving a problem from arXiv:1812.01915. We also present a derivation of the CLT for additive functionals of finite state Markov chains, which is based on positive recurrence, the CLT for IID sequences and some elementary linear algebra, and which focuses on characterization of the variance.
Let $(W_n(θ))_{n\in\mathbb N_0}$ be the Biggins martingale associated with a supercritical branching random walk and denote by $W_\infty(θ)$ its limit. Assuming essentially that the martingale $(W_n(2θ))_{n\in\mathbb N_0}$ is uniformly integrable and that $\text{Var} W_1(θ)$ is finite, we prove a functional central limit theorem for the tail process $(W_\infty(θ) - W_{n+r}(θ))_{r\in\mathbb N_0}$ and a law of the iterated logarithm for $W_\infty(θ)-W_n(θ)$, as $n\to\infty$.
In this article we focus on a general model of random walk on random marked trees. We prove a recurrence criterion, analogue to the recurrence criterion proved by R. Lyons and Robin Pemantle (1992) in a slightly different model. In the critical case, we obtain a criterion for the positive/null recurrence. Several regimes appear, as proved (in a similar model), by Y. Hu and Z. Shi (2007). We focus on the "diffusive" regime and improve their result in this case, by obtaining a functional Central Limit Theorem. Our result is also an extension of a result by Y. Peres and O. Zeitouni (2008), obtain…
First, we prove a \emph{local almost sure central limit theorem} for lattice random walks in the plane. The corresponding version for random walks in the line was considered by the author in \cite{5}. This gives us a quantitative version of Pólya's Recurrence Theorem \cite{6}. Second, we prove a \emph{local almost sure central limit theorem} for (not necessarly lattice) random walks in the line or in the plane, which will also give us quantitative recurrence results. Finally, we prove an \emph{almost sure central limit theorem} for multidimensional (not necessarly lattice) random walks. This i…
We prove a quenched central limit theorem for random walks in i.i.d. weakly elliptic random environments in the ballistic regime. Such theorems have been proved recently by Rassoul-Agha and Seppäläinen in [10] and Berger and Zeitouni in [2] under the assumption of large finite moments for the regeneration time. In this paper, with the extra $(T)_γ$ condition of Sznitman we reduce the moment condition to ${\Bbb E}(τ^2(\ln τ)^{1+m})<+\infty$ for $m>1+1/γ$, which allows the inclusion of new non-uniformly elliptic examples such as Dirichlet random environments.
Open Quantum Random Walks, as developed in \cite{APSS}, are a quantum generalization of Markov chains on finite graphs or on lattices. These random walks are typically quantum in their behavior, step by step, but they seem to show up a rather classical asymptotic behavior, as opposed to the quantum random walks usually considered in Quantum Information Theory (such as the well-known Hadamard random walk). Typically, in the case of Open Quantum Random Walks on lattices, their distribution seems to always converge to a Gaussian distribution or a mixture of Gaussian distributions. In the case of …
We study Random Walks in an i.i.d. Random Environment (RWRE) defined on $b$-regular trees. We prove a functional central limit theorem (FCLT) for transient processes, under a moment condition on the environment. We emphasize that we make no uniform ellipticity assumptions. Our approach relies on regenerative levels, i.e. levels that are visited exactly once. On the way, we prove that the distance between consecutive regenerative levels have a geometrically decaying tail. In the second part of this paper, we apply our results to Linearly Edge-Reinforced Random Walk (LERRW) to prove FCLT when th…
We consider the branching random walks in $d$-dimensional integer lattice with time--space i.i.d. offspring distributions. Then the normalization of the total population is a nonnegative martingale and it almost surely converges to a certain random variable. When $d\geq3$ and the fluctuation of environment satisfies a certain uniform square integrability then it is nondegenerate and we prove a central limit theorem for the density of the population in terms of almost sure convergence.
We prove central limit theorem under diffusive scaling for the displacement of a random walk on ${\mathbb Z}^d$ in stationary divergence-free random drift field, under the ${\mathcal H}_{-1}$-condition imposed on the drift field. The condition is equivalent to assuming that the stream tensor be stationary and square integrable. This improves the best existing result of Komorowski, Landim and Olla (2012), where it is assumed that the stream tensor be in ${\mathcal L}^{\max\{2+δ,d\}}$, with $δ>0$. Our proof relies on the relaxed sector condition of Horváth, Tóth and Vető (2012), and is technical…
In the present paper, as a continuation of our preceding paper [10], we study another kind of central limit theorems (CLTs) for non-symmetric random walks on nilpotent covering graphs from a viewpoint of discrete geometric analysis developed by Kotani and Sunada. We introduce a one-parameter family of random walks which interpolates between the original non-symmetric random walk and the symmetrized one. We first prove a semigroup CLT for the family of random walks by realizing the nilpotent covering graph into a nilpotent Lie group via discrete harmonic maps. The limiting diffusion semigroup i…
Random walks in random sceneries (RWRS) are simple examples of stochastic processes in disordered media. They were introduced at the end of the 70's by Kesten-Spitzer and Borodin, motivated by the construction of new self-similar processes with stationary increments. Two sources of randomness enter in their definition: a random field $ξ= (ξ_x)_{x \in \Z^d}$ of i.i.d.\ random variables, which is called the \emph{random scenery}, and a random walk $S = (S_n)_{n \in \N}$ evolving in $\Z^d$, independent from the scenery. The RWRS $Z = (Z_n)_{n \in \N}$ is then defined as the accumulated scenery al…
In the present paper, we study long time asymptotics of non-symmetric random walks on crystal lattices from a view point of discrete geometric analysis due to Kotani and Sunada [11, 23]. We observe that the Euclidean metric associated with the standard realization of the crystal lattice, called the Albanese metric, naturally appears in the asymptotics. In the former half of the present paper, we establish two kinds of (functional) central limit theorems for random walks. We first show that the Brownian motion on the Euclidean space with the Albanese metric appears as the scaling limit of the u…
In the present paper, we study central limit theorems (CLTs) for non-symmetric random walks on nilpotent covering graphs from a point of view of discrete geometric analysis developed by Kotani and Sunada. We establish a semigroup CLT for a non-symmetric random walk on a nilpotent covering graph. Realizing the nilpotent covering graph into a nilpotent Lie group through a discrete harmonic map, we give a geometric characterization of the limit semigroup on the nilpotent Lie group. More precisely, we show that the limit semigroup is generated by the sub-Laplacian with a non-trivial drift on the n…
We prove that the spectral radius of a strongly irreducible random walk on GLd(R) (or more generally the vector of moduli of eigenvalues of a Zariski-dense random walk on a reductive group) satisfies a central limit theorem under an order two moment assumption.
Chen [Ann. Appl. Probab. {\bf 11} (2001), 1242--1262] derived exact convergence rates in a central limit theorem and a local limit theorem for a supercritical branching Wiener process. We extend Chen's results to a branching random walk under weaker moment conditions. For the branching Wiener process, our results sharpen Chen's by relaxing the second moment condition used by Chen to a moment condition of the form $ \E X (\ln^+X )^{1+λ}< \infty$. In the rate functions that we find for a branching random walk, we figure out some new terms which didn't appear in Chen's work. The results are establi…
We prove a central limit theorem under diffusive scaling for the displacement of a random walk on ${\mathbb Z}^d$ in stationary and ergodic doubly stochastic random environment, under the $\mathcal{H}_{-1}$-condition imposed on the drift field. The condition is equivalent to assuming that the stream tensor of the drift field be stationary and square integrable. This improves the best existing result of Komorowski, Landim and Olla (2012), where it is assumed that the stream tensor is in $\mathcal{L}^{\max\{2+δ, d\}}$, with $δ>0$. Our proof relies on an extension of the \emph{relaxed sector cond…
We introduce ellipticity criteria for random walks in i.i.d. random environments under which we can extend the ballisticity conditions of Sznitman's and the polynomial effective criteria of Berger, Drewitz and Ramirez originally defined for uniformly elliptic random walks. We prove under them the equivalence of Sznitman's (T') condition with the polynomial effective criterion (P)_M, for M large enough. We furthermore give ellipticity criteria under which a random walk satisfying the polynomial effective criterion, is ballistic, satisfies the annealed central limit theorem or the quenched centr…
We consider the branching random walk drifting to $-\infty$ and we investigate large deviations-type estimates for the first passage time. We prove the corresponding law of large numbers and the central limit theorem.
