Using the notion of a Lagrangian covering, W. Graham and D. Vogan proposed a method of constructing representations from the coadjoint orbits for a complex semisimple Lie group $G$. When the coadjoint orbit $\calO$ is nilpotent, a representation of $G$ is attached to each orbital variety of $\calO$ in this way. In the setting of classical groups, we show that whenever it is possible to carry out the Graham-Vogan construction for an orbital variety of a spherical $\mathcal{O}$, its infinitesimal character lies in a set of characters attached to $\mathcal{O}$ by W. M. McGovern. Furthermore, we show that it is possible to carry out the Graham-Vogan construction for a sufficient number of orbital varieties to account for all the infinitesimal characters in this set.
For a classical simple algebraic group $G$ we obtain the affirmative answer for the conjecture in [8] that there exists an isomorphism between the geometric crystal on the flag variety and the one on the unipotent subgroup $U^-$.
We study the cohomology of parabolic Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to unipotent blocks of GLn(q). We show that the geometric version of Broué's conjecture over Q_\ell, together with Craven's formula, holds for any unipotent block whenever it holds for the principal Phi_1-block, that is for the variety X(π).
Our goal is to classify all generically transitive actions of commutative unipotent groups on flag varieties up to conjugation. We establish relationship between this problem and classification of multiplications with certain properties on Lie algebra representations. Then we classify multiplications with the desired properties and solve the initial classification problem.
In this paper, we construct and classify the special unipotent representations of a real reductive group attached to the principal nilpotent orbit. We give formulas for the $\mathbf{K}$-types, associated varieties, and Langlands parameters of all such representations.
We define geometric crystals and unipotent crystals for arbitrary Kac-Moody groups and describe geometric and unipotent crystal structures on the Schubert varieties.
Let $U$ be a maximal unipotent subgroup of a connected semisimple group $G$ and $U'$ the derived group of $U$. We study actions of $U'$ on affine $G$-varieties. First, we consider the algebra of $U'$ invariants on $G/U$. We prove that $k[G/U]^{U'}$ is a polynomial algebra of Krull dimension $2r$, where $r=rk(G)$. A related result is that, for any simple finite-dimensional $G$-module $V$, $V^{U'}$ is a cyclic $U/U'$-module. Second, we study "symmetries" of Poincare series for $U'$-invariants on affine conical $G$-varieties. Third, we obtain a classification of simple $G$-modules $V$ with polyno…
The paper is devoted to the problem of finding free generators in the fields of invariants for actions of unipotent groups on affine varieties. We consider the case when the unipotent group is the unipotent radical in an arbitrary parabolic subgroup in the reductive group of classical type GL(n), SL(n), O(n) or Sp(2n). In the explicit form, we present a system of free generators in the field of invariants for the action of the unipotent radical on the reductive group by conjugation.
We compute special unipotent Arthur packets for real reductive groups in many cases. We list the cases that lead to incomplete answers, and in those cases, provide a suitable set of representations that could lead to a complete description of the special Arthur packet. In the process of achieving this goal we classify theta forms of a given even complex nilpotent orbit, and find methods to compute the associated varieties of irreducible group representations.
We study the quotient of parabolic Deligne-Lusztig varieties by a finite unipotent group U^F where U is the unipotent radical of a rational parabolic subgroup P = L U. We show that in some particular cases the cohomology of this quotient can be expressed in terms of "smaller" parabolic Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to the Levi subgroup L.
In this paper we prove a direct geometric relation between Deligne--Lusztig varieties and Springer fibres in type $\mathsf{A}$: For any rational unipotent element, the Springer fibre cuts out a unique component of a specific Deligne--Lusztig variety; moreover, this component forms an open dense subset of a component of the Springer fibre. This boils down to a map from the unipotent variety to the Weyl group, and combines several constructions with a combinatorial flavour (like Weyr normal forms, Robinson--Schensted correspondence, and Spaltenstein's and Steinberg's labellings); it also provide…
We investigate support schemes for infinitesimal unipotent supergroups and their representations. Our main results provide a non-cohomological description of these schemes which generalizes the classical work of Suslin, Friedlander, and Bendel. As a consequence, support schemes in this setting have the desired features of such a theory, including naturality with respect to group homomorphisms, the tensor product property, and realizability. As an application of the theory developed here, we investigate support varieties for certain finite-dimensional Hopf subalgebras of the Steenrod algebra.
We show that if $G$ is an infinitesimal elementary supergroup scheme of height $\leq r$, then the cohomological spectrum $|G|$ of $G$ is naturally homeomorphic to the variety $\mathcal{N}_r(G)$ of supergroup homomorphisms $ρ: \mathbb{M}_r \rightarrow G$ from a certain (non-algebraic) affine supergroup scheme $\mathbb{M}_r$ into $G$. In the case $r=1$, we further identify the cohomological support variety of a finite-dimensional $G$-supermodule $M$ as a subset of $\mathcal{N}_1(G)$. We then discuss how our methods, when combined with recently-announced results by Benson, Iyengar, Krause, and Pe…
We present an averaging process for sections of a torsor under a unipotent group. This process allows one to integrate local sections of such a torsor into a global simplicial section. The results of this paper have applications to deformation quantization of algebraic varieties.
Let U be the unipotent radical of a Borel subgroup of a connected reductive algebraic group G, which is defined over an algebraically closed field k. In this paper, we extend work by Goodwin-Röhrle concerning the commuting variety of Lie(U) for char(k)=0 to fields, whose characteristic is good for G
The main result of this paper is a new parameterization of the orbits of a symmetric subgroup on a partial flag variety. The parameterization is in terms of certain Spaltenstein varieties, on one hand, and certain nilpotent orbits, on the other. One of the motivations is related to enumerating special unipotent representations of real reductive groups. Another motivation is understanding (a portion of) the closure order on the set of nilpotent coadjoint orbits.
The theme of the article is the study of the unipotent part of Arthur's trace formula for general linear groups. The case of regular (or "regular by blocks") unipotent orbits has been essentially done in a previous paper. Here we are interested by the contribution of Richardson orbits that are induced by Levi subgroups with two-by-two distinct blocks. In this case, the contribution is remarkably given by a global unipotent weighted orbital integral. As a corollary, we get integral formulas for some of Arthur's global coefficients. We also present a new construction of Arthur's local unipotent …
The degenerate Lie group is a semidirect product of the Borel subgroup with the normal abelian unipotent subgroup. We introduce a class of the highest weight representations of the degenerate group of type A, generalizing the PBW-graded representations of the classical group. Following the classical construction of the flag varieties, we consider the closures of the orbits of the abelian unipotent subgroup in the projectivizations of the representations. We show that the degenerate flag varieties $\Fl^a_n$ and their desingularizations $R_n$ can be obtained via this construction. We prove that …
Consider a complex classical semi-simple Lie group along with the set of its nilpotent coadjoint orbits. When the group is of type A, the set of orbital varieties contained in a given nilpotent orbit is described a set of standard Young tableaux. We parameterize both, the orbital varieties and the irreducible components of unipotent varieties in the other classical groups by sets of standard domino tableaux. The main tools are Spaltenstein's results on signed domino tableaux together with Garfinkle's operations on standard domino tableaux.
We show that generalized orbital varieties for Mirkovic-Vybornov slices can be indexed by semi-standard Young tableaux. We also check that the Mirkovic-Vybornov isomorphism sends generalized orbital varieties to (dense subsets of) Mirkovic-Vilonen cycles, such that the (combinatorial) Lusztig datum of a generalized orbital variety, which it inherits from its tableau, is equal to the (geometric) Lusztig datum of its MV cycle.
The orbital varieties are the irreducible components of the intersection between a nilpotent orbit and a Borel subalgebra of the Lie algebra of a reductive group. There is a geometric correspondence between orbital varieties and irreducible components of Springer fibers. In type A, a construction due to Richardson implies that every nilpotent orbit contains at least one smooth orbital variety and every Springer fiber contains at least one smooth component. In this paper, we show that this property is also true for the other classical cases. Our proof uses the interpretation of Springer fibers …
Ariki and Ginzburg, after the previous work of Zelevinsky on orbital varieties, proved that multiplicities in a total parabolically induced representations are given by the value at q=1 of Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials associated to the symmetric groups. In my thesis I explore the geometry of orbital varieties and I essentially obtain two important results: - first I prove a conjecture of Zelevinksy on a property of independence of total parabolically induced representations. - More crucially I give a strategy to compute multiplicities in general parabolically induced representations using the p…
Let g be a semisimple complex Lie algebra. Let O be a nilpotent orbit in g. Fix a triangular decomposition g=n+h+n^-. An irreducible component of the intersection of O and n is called an orbital variety associated to O. It is a Lagrangian subvariety of O. In this note we discuss the closure of an orbital variety as a union of varieties. We show that if g contains factors not of type A_n then there are orbital varieties whose closure contains components which are not Lagrangian. We show that the argument does not work if all the factors are of type A_n and provide the facts supporting the conje…
For each reductive algebraic group G we introduce and study unipotent bicrystals which serve as a regular version of birational geometric and unipotent crystals introduced earlier by the authors. The framework of unipotent bicrystals allows, on the one hand, to study systematically such varieties as Bruhat cells in G and their convolution products and, on the other hand, to give a new construction of many normal Kashiwara crystals including those for G^\vee-modules, where G^\vee is the Langlands dual groups. In fact, our analogues of crystal bases (which we refer to as crystals associated to G…
We consider the conjugation-action of an arbitrary upper-block parabolic subgroup of GL_n(C) on the variety of x-nilpotent complex matrices. We obtain a criterion as to whether the action admits a finite number of orbits and specify a system of representatives for the orbits in the finite case of 2-nilpotent matrices. Furthermore, we give a set-theoretic description of their closures and specify the minimal degenerations in detail for the action of the Borel subgroup. Concerning the action on the nilpotent cone, we obtain a generic normal form of the orbits which yields a U-normal form as well…
In this paper, we present a conjecture on the degree of unipotent characters in the cohomology of particular Deligne-Lusztig varieties for groups of Lie type, and derive consequences of it. These degrees are a necessary piece of data in the geometric version of Broué's abelian defect group conjecture, and can be used to verify this geometric conjecture in new cases. The geometric version of Broué's conjecture should produce a more combinatorially defined derived equivalence, called a perverse equivalence. We prove that our conjectural degree is an integer (which is not obvious) and has the cor…
Let $ G $ be a connected, simply connected semisimple algebraic group over the complex number field, and let $ K $ be the fixed point subgroup of an involutive automorphism of $ G $ so that $ (G, K) $ is a symmetric pair. We take parabolic subgroups $ P $ of $ G $ and $ Q $ of $ K $ respectively and consider the product of partial flag varieties $ G/P $ and $ K/Q $ with diagonal $ K $-action, which we call a \emph{double flag variety for symmetric pair}. It is said to be \emph{of finite type} if there are only finitely many $ K $-orbits on it. In this paper, we give a parametrization of $ K $-…
Let g be a semisimple Lie algebra with h a Cartan subalgebra. The orbit method attempts to assign representations of g to orbits in g*. Orbital varieties are particular Lagrangian subvarieties of such orbits which should lead to highest weight representations of g. It is known that all unitary highest weight representations can be obtained in this fashion. A hypersurface orbital variety is one which is of codimension 1 in the nilradical of a parabolic. Their classification for g = sl(n) obtains from general results. Recently Benlolo and Sanderson conjectured the form of the (non-linear) elemen…
We study the decomposition matrices for the unipotent $\ell$-blocks of finite special unitary groups SU$_n(q)$ for unitary primes $\ell$ larger than $n$. Up to very few unknown entries, we give a complete solution for $n=2,\ldots,10$. We also prove a general result for two-column partitions when $\ell$ divides $q+1$. This is achieved using projective modules coming from the $\ell$-adic cohomology of Deligne--Lusztig varieties.
We correct the proof of the main result of an earlier paper, parametrizing orbital varieties in a complex simple Lie algebra of type $B$ or $C$ in terms of domino tableaux and showing how to compute the orbital variety attached to an element of the Weyl group in either of these types.
We correct the proof of the main result in an earlier paper, showing how to parametrize orbital varieties in a complex simple Lie algebra of type $D$ in terms of domino tableaux and showing how to compute variety attached to any element of the Weyl group in this type.
We study the structure of hypersurface orbital varieties of sl(N,C) (those that are hypersurfaces in the nilradical of some parabolic subalgebra) and how information about this structure is encoded in the standard Young tableau associated to it by the Robinson-Schensted algorithm. We present a conjecture for the exact form of the unique non-linear defining equations of hypersurface orbital varieties and proofs of the conjecture in certain cases.
The primary purpose is to introduce and explore projective varieties, $\text{GRASS}_{\bf d}(Λ)$, parametrizing the full collection of those modules over a finite dimensional algebra $Λ$ which have dimension vector $\bf d$. These varieties extend the smaller varieties previously studied by the author; namely, the projective varieties encoding those modules with dimension vector $\bf d$ which, in addition, have a preassigned top or radical layering. Each of the $\text{GRASS}_{\bf d}(Λ)$ is again partitioned by the action of a linear algebraic group, and covered by certain representation-theoreti…
The $G$-representation variety $R_G(Σ_g)$ parametrizes the representations of the fundamental groups of surfaces $π_1(Σ_g)$ into an algebraic group $G$. Taking $G$ to be the groups of $n \times n$ upper triangular or unipotent matrices, we compare two methods for computing algebraic invariants of $R_G(Σ_G)$. Using the geometric method initiated by González-Prieto, Logares and Muñoz, based on a Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT), we compute the virtual classes of $R_G(Σ_g)$ in the Grothendieck ring of varieties for $n = 1, \ldots, 5$. Introducing the notion of algebraic representatives we …
We consider two partial orders on standard Young tableaux. The first one is induced from the weak right Bruhat order on symmetric group by Robinson-Schensted algorithm. The second one is induced from the order on Young diagrams by considering a Young tableau as a chain of Young diagrams. We show that these two orders of completely different nature coincide on the subset of Young tableaux with 2 columns or with 2 rows. This fact has very interesting geometric implications for orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n).
For a semisimple Lie algebra g the orbit method attempts to assign representations of g to (coadjoint) orbits in g*. Orbital varieties are particular Lagrangian subvarieties of such orbits leading to highest weight representations of g. In sl(n) orbital varieties are described by Young tableaux. In this paper we consider so called Richardson orbital varieties in sl(n). A Richardson orbital variety is an orbital variety whose closure is a standard nilradical. We show that in sl(n) a Richardson orbital variety closure is a union of orbital varieties. We give a complete combinatorial description …
We compare two important bases of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group: the web basis and the Specht basis. The web basis has its roots in the Temperley-Lieb algebra and knot-theoretic considerations. The Specht basis is a classic algebraic and combinatorial construction of symmetric group representations which arises in this context through the geometry of varieties called Springer fibers. We describe a graph that encapsulates combinatorial relations between each of these bases, prove that there is a unique way (up to scaling) to map the Specht basis into the web representatio…
Let $G$ be a reductive group over a finite field with a maximal unipotent subgroup $U$, we consider certain sheaves on $G/U$ defined by Kazhdan and Laumon and show that their cohomology produces the cohomology of the Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We then use this comparison to give a new proof of a result of Dudas.
We analyze the asymptotic behavior of certain twisted orbital integrals arising from the study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The main tools include the Base Change Fundamental Lemma and $q$-analogues of the Kostant partition functions. As an application we prove a conjecture of Miaofen Chen and Xinwen Zhu, relating the set of irreducible components of an affine Deligne-Lusztig variety modulo the action of the $σ$-centralizer group to the Mirkovic-Vilonen basis of a certain weight space of a representation of the Langlands dual group.
Inclusion relation on orbital variety closures defines a partial order on Young tableaux. Our aim is to describe this order. The paper is devoted to the combinatorial description of induced Duflo order on Young tableaux (the order generated by inclusion of generating subspaces of orbital varieties). Th…
We study Broué's abelian defect group conjecture for groups of Lie type using the recent theory of perverse equivalences and Deligne--Lusztig varieties. Our approach is to analyze the perverse equivalence induced by certain Deligne--Lusztig varieties (the geometric form of Broué's conjecture) directly; this uses the cohomology of these varieties, together with information from the cyclotomic Hecke algebra. We start with a conjecture on the cohomology of these Deligne--Lusztig varieties, prove various desirable properties about it, and then use this to prove the existence of the perverse equiva…
We compute the representation zeta functions of some finitely generated nilpotent groups associated to unipotent group schemes over rings of integers in number fields. These group schemes are defined by Lie lattices whose presentations are modelled on certain prehomogeneous vector spaces. Our method is based on evaluating $\mathfrak{p}$-adic integrals associated to certain rank varieties of matrices of linear forms.
The standard Poisson structures on the flag varieties G/P of a complex reductive algebraic group G are investigated. It is shown that the orbits of symplectic leaves in G/P under a fixed maximal torus of G are smooth irreducible locally closed subvarieties of G/P, isomorphic to intersections of dual Schubert cells in the full flag variety G/B of G, and their Zariski closures are explicitly computed. Two different proofs of the former result are presented. The first is in the framework of Poisson homogeneous spaces and the second one uses an idea of weak splittings of surjective Poisson submers…
We construct an extended oriented $(2+ε)$-dimensional topological field theory, the character field theory $X_G$ attached to a affine algebraic group in characteristic zero, which calculates the homology of character varieties of surfaces. It is a model for a dimensional reduction of Kapustin-Witten theory ($N=4$ $d=4$ super-Yang-Mills in the GL twist), and a universal version of the unipotent character field theory introduced in arXiv:0904.1247. Boundary conditions in $X_G$ are given by quantum Hamiltonian $G$-spaces, as captured by de Rham (or strong) $G$-categories, i.e., module categories …
We study a class of varieties which generalize the classical orbital varieties of Joseph. We show that our generalized orbital varieties are the irreducible components of a Mirkovic-Vybornov slice to a nilpotent orbit, and can be labeled by semistandard Young tableaux. Furthermore, we prove that Mirkovic-Vilonen cycles are obtained by applying the Mirkovic-Vybornov isomorphism to generalized orbital varieties and taking a projective closure, refining Mirkovic and Vybornov's result. As a consequence, we are able to use the Lusztig datum of a Mirkovic--Vilonen cycle to determine the tableau labe…
We consider the support varieties of Demazure modules, certain $B$-modules important in the representation theory of reductive groups. In many cases we are able to compute these support varieties over $B_1$, the first Frobenius kernel of a Borel subgroup, and relate them to orbital varieties. We provide a complete calculation of the support varieties when the underlying algebraic group has type $A_1$ or $A_2$. We also consider the saturation ($G$ orbit of) $B_1$ support varieties for Demazure modules and show that the inclusion relations among these varieties are compatible with the Bruhat ord…
