We prove some pinching results for the extrinsic radius of compact hypersurfaces in space forms. We show that if the pinching condion is strong enough with a dependance on the norm of the second foundamental form, then the hypersurface is diffeomorphic and almost isometric to a geodesic hypersphere.
In this paper, the pinching problems of complete $λ$-hypersurfaces in a Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ are studied. By making use of the Sobolev inequality, we prove a global pinching theorem of complete $λ$-hypersurfaces in a Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{n+1}$.
In this paper, we prove new pinching theorems for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on compact hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space. These pinching results are associated with the upper bound for the first eigenvalue in terms of higher order mean curvatures. We show that under a suitable pinching condition, the hypersurface is diffeomorpic and almost isometric to a standard sphere. Moreover, as a corollary, we show that a hypersurface of the Euclidean space which is almost Einstein is diffeomorpic and almost isometric to a standard sphere.
In this paper we give pinching theorems for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian on the compact hypersurfaces of ambient spaces with bounded sectional curvature. As application we deduce rigidity results for stable constant mean curvature hypersurfaces $M$ of these spaces $N$. Indeed, we prove that if $M$ is included in a ball of radius small enough then the Hausdorff-distance between $M$ and a geodesic sphere $S$ of $N$ is small. Moreover $M$ is diffeomorphic and quasi-isometric to $S$. As other application, we give rigidity results for almost umbilic hypersurfaces.
We give new estimates for the extrinsic radius of compact hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space and the open hemisphere in terms of high order mean curvatures. Then we prove pinching results corresponding to theses estimates. We show that under a suitable pinching condition, the hypersurface is diffeomorphic and almost isometric to a geodesic hypersphere.
In this paper, we give pinching Theorems for the first nonzero eigenvalue $λ$ of the Laplacian on the compact hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space. Indeed, we prove that if the volume of $M$ is 1 then, for any $ε>0$, there exists a constant $C\_ε$ depending on the dimension $n$ of $M$ and the $L\_{\infty}$-norm of the mean curvature $H$, so that if the $L\_{2p}$-norm $\|H\|\_{2p}$ ($p\geq 2$) of $H$ satisfies $n\|H\|\_{2p}-C\_ε<λ$, then the Hausdorff-distance between $M$ and a round sphere of radius $(n/λ)^{1/2}$ is smaller than $ε$. Furthermore, we prove that if $C$ is a small enough constant…
In this article, we prove an eigenvalue pinching theorem for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on compact hypersurfaces in a sphere. Let $(M^n,g)$ be a closed, connected and oriented Riemannian manifold isometrically immersed by $ϕ$ into $§^{n+1}$. Let $q>n$ and $A>0$ be some real numbers satisfying $|M|^\frac{1}{n}(1+\|B\|_q)\leq A$. Suppose that $ϕ(M)\subset B(p_0,R)$, where $p_0$ is a center of gravity of $M$ and radius $R<\fracπ{2}$. We prove that there exists a positive constant $\e$ depending on $q$, $n$, $R$ and $A$ such that if $n(1+\|H\|_\infty^2)-\e\leq ł_1$, then $M$ is diffeomo…
Second derivative pinching estimates are proved for a class of elliptic and parabolic equations, including motion of hypersurfaces by curvature functions such as quotients of elementary symmetric functions of curvature. The estimates imply convergence of convex hypersurfaces to spheres under these flows, improving earlier results of B. Chow and the author. The result is obtained via a detailed analysis of gradient terms in the equations satisfied by second derivatives.
We generalize the second pinching theorem for minimal hypersurfaces in a sphere due to Peng-Terng, Wei-Xu, Zhang, and Ding-Xin to the case of hypersurfaces with small constant mean curvature. Let $M^n$ be a compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature $H$ in $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$. Denote by $S$ the squared norm of the second fundamental form of $M$. We prove that there exist two positive constants $γ(n)$ and $δ(n)$ depending only on $n$ such that if $|H|\leqγ(n)$ and $β(n,H)\leq S\leqβ(n,H)+δ(n)$, then $S\equivβ(n,H)$ and $M$ is one of the following cases: (i) $\mathbb{S}^{k}(\sqrt{\frac{k}{…
We prove stability results associated with upper bounds for the first eigenvalue of certain second order differential operators of divergence-type on hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space. We deduce some applications to $r$-stability as well as to almost-Einstein hypersurfaces.
Let $M^n$ be a closed convex hypersurface lying in a convex ball $B(p,R)$ of the ambient $(n+1)$-manifold $N^{n+1}$. We prove that, by pinching Heintze-Reilly's inequality via sectional curvature upper bound of $B(p,R)$, 1st eigenvalue and mean curvature of $M$, not only $M$ is Hausdorff close and almost isometric to a geodesic sphere $S(p_0,R_0)$ in $N$, but also its enclosed domain is $C^{1,α}$-close to a geodesic ball of constant curvature.
In this note we characterize compact hypersurfaces of dimension $n\geq 2$ with constant mean curvature $H$ immersed in space forms of constant curvature and satisfying an optimal integral pinching condition: they are either totally umbilical or, when $n\geq 3$ and $H\neq 0$, they are locally contained in a rotational hypersurface. In dimension two, the integral pinching condition reduces to a topological assumption and we recover the classical Hopf-Chern result.
We prove that if the initial hypersurface of the mean curvature flow in spheres satisfies a sharp pinching condition, then the solution of the flow converges to a round point or a totally geodesic sphere. Our result improves the famous convergence theorem due to Huisken [9]. Moreover, we prove a convergence theorem under the weakly pinching condition. In particular, we obtain a classification theorem for weakly pinched hypersurfaces. It should be emphasized that our pinching condition implies that the Ricci curvature of the initial hypersurface is positive, but does not imply positivity of the…
We determine the Hausdorff limit-set of the Euclidean hypersurfaces with large $λ_1$ or small extrinsic radius. The result depends on the $L^p$ norm of the curvature that is assumed to be bounded a priori, with a critical behaviour for $p$ equal to the dimension minus 1.
In this paper, geometric characterizations of conformally flat and radially flat hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{S}^n \times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^n \times \mathbb{R}$ are given by means of their extrinsic geometry. Under suitable conditions on the shape operator, we classify conformally flat hypersurfaces in terms of rotation hypersurfaces. In addition, a close relation between radially flat hypersurfaces and semi-parallel hypersurfaces is established. These results lead to geometric descriptions of hypersurfaces with special intrinsic structures, such as Einstein metrics, Ricci solitons and …
In this paper, we prove that Euclidean hypersurfaces with almost extremal extrinsic radius or $λ_1$ have a spectrum that asymptotically contains the spectrum of the extremal sphere in the Reilly or Hasanis-Koutroufiotis Inequalities. We also consider almost extremal hypersurfaces which satisfy a supplementary bound on $v_M\|\B\|_α^n$ and show that their spectral and topological properties depends on the position of $α$ with respect to the critical value $\dim M$. The study of the metric shape of these extremal hypersurfaces will be done in \cite{AG1}, using estimates of the present paper.
In this article, we prove new stability results for almost-Einstein hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space, based on previous eigenvalue pinching results. Then, we deduce some comparable results for almost umbilical hypersurfaces.

We prove a suite of asymptotically sharp quadratic curvature pinching estimates for mean curvature flow in the sphere which generalize Simons' rigidity theorem for minimal hypersurfaces. We then obtain derivative estimates for the second fundamental form which we utilize, via a compactness argument, to obtain a convexity estimate. Together, the convexity and cylindrical estimates yield a partial classification of singularity models. We also obtain new rigidity results for ancient solutions.
We prove that hypersurfaces of $\R^{n+1}$ which are almost extremal for the Reilly inequality on $λ_1$ and have $L^p$-bounded mean curvature ($p>n$) are Hausdorff close to a sphere, have almost constant mean curvature and have a spectrum which asymptotically contains the spectrum of the sphere. We prove the same result for the Hasanis-Koutroufiotis inequality on extrinsic radius. We also prove that when a supplementary $L^q$ bound on the second fundamental is assumed, the almost extremal manifolds are Lipschitz close to a sphere when $q>n$, but not necessarily diffeomorphic to a sphere when $q…
We study mean curvature flow in $\mathbb S_K^{n+1}$, the round sphere of sectional curvature $K>0$, under the quadratic curvature pinching condition $|A|^{2} < \frac{1}{n-2} H^{2} + 4 K$ when $n\ge 4$ and $|A|^{2} < \frac{3}{5}H^{2}+\frac{8}{3}K$ when $n=3$. This condition is related to a famous theorem of Simons, which states that the only minimal hypersurfaces satisfying $\vert A\vert^2<nK$ are the totally geodesic hyperspheres. It is related to but distinct from two-convexity. Notably, in contrast to two-convexity, it allows the mean curvature to change sign. We show that the pinching condi…
In this paper, we investigate the contracting curvature flow of closed, strictly convex axially symmetric hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ and $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ by $σ_k^α$, where $σ_k$ is the $k$-th elementary symmetric function of the principal curvatures and $α\ge 1/k$. We prove that for any $n\geq3$ and any fixed $k$ with $1\leq k\leq n$, there exists a constant $c(n,k)>1/k$ such that that if $α$ lies in the interval $[1/k,c(n,k)]$, then we have a nice curvature pinching estimate involving the ratio of the biggest principal curvature to the smallest principal curvature of the flow hyper…
In this paper, we study complete oriented $f$-minimal hypersurfaces properly immersed in a cylinder shrinking soliton $(\mathbb{S}^n\times \mathbb{R}, \bar{g}, f)$. We prove that such hypersurface with $L_f$-index one must be either $\mathbb{S}^n\times\{0\}$ or $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}\times\mathbb{R}$, where $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ denotes the sphere in $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ of the same radius. Also we prove a pinching theorem for them.
We prove new pinching estimate for the inverse curvature flow of strictly convex hypersurfaces in the space form $N$ of constant sectional curvature $K_N$ with speed given by $F^{-α}$, where $α\in (0,1]$ for $K_N=0,-1$ and $α=1$ for $K_N=1$, $F$ is a smooth, symmetric homogeneous of degree one function which is inverse concave and has dual $F_*$ approaching zero on the boundary of the positive cone $Γ_+$. We show that the ratio of the largest principal curvature to the smallest principal curvature of the flow hypersurface is controlled by its initial value. This can be used to prove the smooth…
We consider the mean curvature flow of a closed hypersurface in the complex or quaternionic projective space. Under a suitable pinching assumption on the initial data, we prove apriori estimates on the principal curvatures which imply that the asymptotic profile near a singularity is either strictly convex or cylindrical. This result generalizes to a large class of symmetric ambient spaces the estimates obtained in the previous works on the mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces in Euclidean space and in the sphere.
For any hypersurface of a Riemannian manifold, recent works introduced the notions of extrinsic conformal Laplacians and extrinsic Q-curvatures. Here we announce explicit formulas for the extrinsic Paneitz operators P_4 and the corresponding extrinsic Q-curvatures for totally umbilic hypersurfaces in any dimension. Moreover, we state explicit formulas for the critical extrinsic P_4 and the total integral of the critical extrinsic Q_4 in the general case. This integral is a global conformal invariant. Finally, we establish an analog of the Alexakis-Deser-Schwimmer decomposition of the critical …
We prove rigidity theorems for ancient solutions of geometric flows of immersed submanifolds. Specifically, we find pinching conditions on the second fundamental form that characterize the shrinking sphere among compact ancient solutions for the mean curvature flow in codimension greater than one, and for some nonlinear curvature flows of hypersurfaces.
We describe extrinsic hyperspheres and totally geodesic hypersurfaces in manifolds with special holonomy. In particular we prove the nonexistence of extrinsic hyperspheres in quaternion-Kaehler manifolds. We develop a new approach to extrinsic hyperspheres based on the classification of special Killing forms.
In this paper, we obtain several new intrinsic and extrinsic differential sphere theorems via Ricci flow. For intrinsic case, we show that a closed simply connected $n(\ge 4)$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ is diffeomorphic to $S^n$ if one of the following conditions holds pointwisely: $$ (i)\ R_0>\left(1-\frac{24(\sqrt{10}-3)}{n(n-1)}\right)K_{max};\quad \ (ii)\ \frac{Ric^{[4]}}{4(n-1)}>\left(1-\frac{6(\sqrt{10}-3)}{n-1}\right)K_{max}.$$ Here $K_{max}$, $Ric^{[k]}$ and $R_0$ stand for the maximal sectional curvature, the $k$-th weak Ricci curvature and the normalized scalar curvature. Fo…
We prove convergence results for expanding curvature flows in the Euclidean and hyperbolic space. The flow speeds have the form $F^{-p}$, where $p>1$ and $F$ is a positive, strictly monotone and 1-homogeneous curvature function. In particular this class includes the mean curvature $F=H$. We prove that a certain initial pinching condition is preserved and the properly rescaled hypersurfaces converge smoothly to the unit sphere. We show that an example due to Andrews-McCoy-Zheng can be used to construct strictly convex initial hypersurfaces, for which the inverse mean curvature flow to the power…
We prove a weak version of the Perdomo Conjecture, namely, there is a positive constant $δ(n)>0$ depending only on $n$ such that on any closed embedded, non-totally geodesic, minimal hypersurface $M^n$ in $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$, $$\int_{M}S \geq δ(n){\rm Vol}(M^n),$$ where $S$ is the squared length of the second fundamental form of $M^n$. The Perdomo Conjecture asserts that $δ(n)=n$ which is still open in general. As byproducts, we also obtain some integral inequalities and Simons-type pinching results on closed embedded (or immersed) minimal hypersurfaces, with the first positive eigenvalue $λ_1(…
For a compact minimal hypersurface $M$ in $S^{n+1}$ with the squared length of the second fundamental form $S$ we confirm that there exists a positive constant $\de(n)$ depending only on $n,$ such that if $n\leq S\leq n +δ(n)$, then $S\equiv n$, i.e., $M$ is a Clifford minimal hypersurface, in particular, when $n\ge 6,$ the pinching constant $\de(n)=\f{n}{23}.$
We consider inverse curvature flows in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Euclidean space, $n\geq 2,$ expanding by arbitrary negative powers of a 1-homogeneous, monotone curvature function $F$ with some concavity properties. We obtain asymptotical roundness, meaning that circumradius minus inradius of the flow hypersurfaces decays to zero and that the flow becomes close to a flow of spheres.
For any hypersurface $M$ of a Riemannian manifold $X$, recent works introduced the notions of extrinsic conformal Laplacians and extrinsic $Q$-curvatures. Here we derive explicit formulas for the extrinsic version ${\bf P}_4$ of the Paneitz operator and the corresponding extrinsic fourth-order $Q$-curvature ${\bf Q}_4$ in general dimensions. This result involves a series of obvious local conformal invariants of the embedding $M^4 \hookrightarrow X^5$ (defined in terms of the Weyl tensor and the trace-free second fundamental form) and a non-trivial local conformal invariant $\mathcal{C}$. In tu…
Let $M^n$ be a compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature $H$ in $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$. Denote by $S$ the squared norm of the second fundamental form of $M$. We prove that there exists a positive constant $γ(n)$ depending only on $n$ such that if $|H|\leqγ(n)$ and $β(n,H)\leq S\leqβ(n,H)+\frac{n}{23}$, then $S\equivβ(n,H)$ and $M$ is one of the following cases: (i) $\mathbb{S}^{k}(\sqrt{\frac{k}{n}})\times \mathbb{S}^{n-k}(\sqrt{\frac{n-k}{n}})$, $\,1\le k\le n-1$; (ii) $\mathbb{S}^{1}(\frac{1}{\sqrt{1+μ^2}})\times \mathbb{S}^{n-1}(\fracμ{\sqrt{1+μ^2}})$. Here $β(n,H)=n+\frac{n^3}{2(n-1)}H…
On real hypersurfaces in complex space forms many results are proven. In this paper we generalize some results concerning extrinsic geometry of real hypersurfaces, to CR submanifolds of maximal CR dimension in complex space forms.
Under some dimension restrictions, we prove that totally umbilical hypersurfaces of Spin$^c$ manifolds carrying a parallel, real or imaginary Killing spinor are of constant mean curvature. This extends to the Spin$^c$ case the result of O. Kowalski stating that, every totally umbilical hypersurface of an Einstein manifold of dimension greater or equal to $3$ is of constant mean curvature. As an application, we prove that there are no extrinsic hypersheres in complete Riemannian Spin manifolds of non-constant sectional curvature carrying a parallel, Killing or imaginary Killing spinor.
An expression for the first variation of the area functional of the second fundamental form is given for a hypersurface in a semi-Riemannian space. The concept of the "mean curvature of the second fundamental form" is then introduced. Some characterisations of extrinsic hyperspheres in terms of this curvature are given.
We provide sharp stability estimates for the Alexandrov Soap Bubble Theorem in the hyperbolic space. The closeness to a single sphere is quantified in terms of the dimension, the measure of the hypersurface and the radius of the touching ball condition. As consequence we obtain a new pinching result for hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space. Our approach is based on the method of moving planes. In this context we carefully review the method and we provide the first quantitative study in the hyperbolic space.
A long-standing conjecture in Hamiltonian Dynamics states that the Reeb flow of any convex hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ carries an elliptic closed orbit. Two important contributions toward its proof were given by Ekeland in 1986 and Dell'Antonio-D'Onofrio-Ekeland in 1995 proving this for convex hypersurfaces satisfying suitable pinching conditions and for antipodal invariant convex hypersurfaces respectively. In this work we present a generalization of these results using contact homology and a notion of dynamical convexity first introduced by Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder for tight contact forms…
Among a family of 2-parameter left invariant metrics on Sp(2), we determine which have nonnegative sectional curvatures and which are Einstein. On the quotiente $\widetilde{N}^{11}=(Sp(2)\times S^4)/S^3$, we construct a homogeneous isoparametric foliation with isoparametric hypersurfaces diffeomorphic to Sp(2). Furthermore, on the quotiente $\widetilde{N}^{11}/S^3$, we construct a transnormal system with transnormal hypersurfaces diffeomorphic to the Gromoll-Meyer sphere $Σ^7$. Moreover, the induced metric on each hypersurface has positive Ricci curvature and quasi-positive sectional curvature…
We study a volume preserving curvature flow of convex hypersurfaces, driven by a power of the $k$-th elementary symmetric polynomial in the principal curvatures. Unlike most of the previous works on related problems, we do not require assumptions on the curvature pinching of the initial datum. We prove that the solution exists for all times and that the speed remains bounded and converges to a constant in an integral norm. In the case of the volume preserving scalar curvature flow, we can prove that the hypersurfaces converge smoothly and exponentially fast to a round sphere.
We prove gradient estimates for hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+1},$ expanding by negative powers of a certain class of homogeneous curvature functions. We obtain optimal gradient estimates for hypersurfaces evolving by certain powers $p>1$ of $F^{-1}$ and smooth convergence of the properly rescaled hypersurfaces. In particular, the full convergence result holds for the inverse Gauss curvature flow of surfaces without any further pinching condition besides convexity of the initial hypersurface.
In this paper we prove some results concerning stability of hypersurfaces in the four dimensional Euclidean space with zero scalar curvature. First we prove there is no complete stable hypersurface with zero scalar curvature, polynomial growth of integral of the mean curvature, and with the Gauss-Kronecker curvature bounded away from zero. We conclude this paper giving a sufficient condition for a regular domain to be stable in terms of the mean and the Gauss-Kronecker curvatures of the hypersurface and the radius of the smallest extrinsic ball which contains the domain.
A parametric manifold can be viewed as the manifold of orbits of a (regular) foliation of a manifold by means of a family of curves. If the foliation is hypersurface orthogonal, the parametric manifold is equivalent to the 1-parameter family of hypersurfaces orthogonal to the curves, each of which inherits a metric and connection from the original manifold via orthogonal projections; this is the well-known Gauss-Codazzi formalism. We generalize this formalism to the case where the foliation is not hypersurface orthogonal. Crucial to this generalization is the notion of deficiency, which measur…
Submanifolds in Lorentz-Minkowski space are investigated from various mathematical viewpoints and are of interest also in relativity theory. We define the hyperbolic surface and the de Sitter surface of a curve in the spacelike hypersurface M in the Minkowski 4-space. These surfaces are respectively located in the hyperbolic 3-space and in the de Sitter 3-space. We use techniques of the theory of singularities in order to describe the generic shape of these surfaces and of their singular value sets. We also investigate geometric meanings of those singularities. The results in this paper contri…
