For a compact minimal hypersurface $M$ in $S^{n+1}$ with the squared length of the second fundamental form $S$ we confirm that there exists a positive constant $\de(n)$ depending only on $n,$ such that if $n\leq S\leq n +δ(n)$, then $S\equiv n$, i.e., $M$ is a Clifford minimal hypersurface, in particular, when $n\ge 6,$ the pinching constant $\de(n)=\f{n}{23}.$
We propose a flow to study the Chern-Yamabe problem and discuss the long time existence of the flow. In the balanced case we show that the Chern-Yamabe problem is the Euler-Lagrange equation of some functional. The monotonicity of the functional along the flow is derived. We also show that the functional is not bounded from below.
For two complex vector bundles admitting a homomorphism, whose singularity locates in the disjoint union of some odd--dimensional spheres, we give a formula to compute the relative Chern characteristic number of these two complex vector bundles. In particular, for a spin manifold admitting some sphere bundle structure, we give a formula to express the index of a special twisted Dirac operator.
We describe some relations between coefficients of irreducible components of the first Chern class [FP15] and birational germs introduced by Dloussky {Dl16] for intermediate Kato surfaces.
We initiate the study of an analogue of the Yamabe problem for complex manifolds. More precisely, fixed a conformal Hermitian structure on a compact complex manifold, we are concerned in the existence of metrics with constant Chern scalar curvature. In this note, we set the problem and we provide a positive answer when the expected constant Chern scalar curvature is non-positive. In particular, this includes the case when the Kodaira dimension of the manifold is non-negative. Finally, we give some remarks on the positive curvature case, showing existence in some special cases and the failure, …
We give a comprehensive account of Chern's Theorem that S^6 admits no omega-compatible almost complex structures. No claim to originality is being made, as the paper is mostly an expanded version of material already in the literature. This article extends the talks that both authors gave in Marburg during the conference "(Non)existence of complex structures on S^6" in April 2017.
This expository paper contains a detailed introduction to some important works concerning the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The study of this theorem has a long history dating back to Gauss's Theorema Egregium (Latin: Remarkable Theorem) and culminated in Chern's groundbreaking work [14] in 1944, which is a deep and wonderful application of Elie Cartan's formalism. The idea and tools in [14] have a great generalization and continue to produce important results till today. In this paper, we give four different proofs of the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem on Riemannian manifolds, namely Chern's simple…
In this paper, we present two kinds of total Chern forms $c(E,G)$ and $\mathcal{C}(E,G)$ as well as a total Segre form $s(E,G)$ of a holomorphic Finsler vector bundle $π:(E,G)\to M$ expressed by the Finsler metric $G$, which answers a question of J. Faran (\cite{Faran}) to some extent. As some applications, we show that the signed Segre forms $(-1)^ks_k(E,G)$ are positive $(k,k)$-forms on $M$ when $G$ is of positive Kobayashi curvature; we prove, under an extra assumption, that a Finsler-Einstein vector bundle in the sense of Kobayashi is semi-stable; we introduce a new definition of a flat Fi…
Some cohomology elements, called $ν$ classes, as a supergeneralization of universal Chern classes, are introduced for canonical super line bundles over $ν$ projective spaces, a novel supergeometric generalization of projective spaces. It is shown that these classes may be described by analytic representatives of elements of generalized de Rham cohomology.
We study 4-dimensional second-Chern-Einstein almost-Hermitian manifolds. In the compact case, we observe that under a certain hypothesis the Riemannian dual of the Lee form is a Killing vector field. We use that observation to describe 4-dimensional compact second-Chern-Einstein locally conformally symplectic manifolds and we give some examples of such manifolds. Finally, we study the second-Chern-Einstein problem on unimodular almost-abelian Lie algebras, classifying those that admit a left-invariant second-Chern-Einstein metric with a parallel non-zero Lee form.
The various scalar curvatures on an almost Hermitian manifold are studied, in particular with respect to conformal variations. We show several integrability theorems, which state that two of these can only agree in the Kähler case. Our main question is the existence of almost Kähler metrics with conformally constant Chern scalar curvature. This problem is completely solved for ruled manifolds and in a complementary case where methods from the Chern-Yamabe problem are adapted to the non-integrable case. Also a moment map interpretation of the problem is given, leading to a Futaki invariant and …
Given a non compact semisimple Lie group $G$ we describe all homogeneous spaces $G/L$ carrying an invariant almost Kähler structure $(ω,J)$. When $L$ is abelian and $G$ is of classical type, we classify all such spaces which are Chern-Einstein, i.e. which satisfy $ρ= λω$ for some $λ\in\mathbb R$, where $ρ$ is the Ricci form associated to the Chern connection.
We study quaternionic Bott-Chern cohomology on compact hypercomplex manifolds and adapt some results from complex geometry to the quaternionic setting. For instance, we prove a criterion for the existence of HKT metrics on compact hypercomplex manifolds of real dimension 8 analogous to the one given by Teleman [35] and Angella-Dloussky-Tomassini [3] for compact complex surfaces.
We compute the Chern-Simons transgressed forms of some modularly invariant characteristic forms, which are related to the elliptic genera. We study the modularity properties of these secondary characteristic forms and the relations among them. We also compute the Chern-Simons forms of some vector bundles over free loop space.
In this work, we obtain some existence results of Chern-Ricci Flows and the corresponding Potential Flows on complex manifolds with possibly incomplete initial data. We discuss the behaviour of the solution as $t\rightarrow 0$. These results can be viewed as generalization of an existence result by Giesen and Topping for surfaces of hyperbolic type of Ricci flow to higher dimensions in certain sense. On the other hand, we also discuss the long time behaviour of the solution and obtain some sufficient conditions for the existence of Kähler-Einstein metric on complete noncompact Hermitian manifo…
Libgober and Wood proved that the Chern number $c_{1}c_{n-1}$ of a $n$-dimensional compact complex manifold can be determined by its Hirzebruch $χ_{y}$-genus. Inspired by the idea of their proof, we show that, for compact, spin, almost-complex manifolds, more Chern numbers can be determined by the indices of some twisted Dirac and signature operators. As a byproduct, we get a divisibility result of certain characteristic number for such manifolds. Using our method, we give a direct proof of Libgober-Wood's result, which was originally proved by induction.
It is known that Hirzebruch surfaces of non zero degree do not admit any constant scalar curvature Kähler metric \cite{ACGT,G,M17}. In this note, we describe how to construct Hermitian metrics of positive constant Chern scalar curvature on Hirzebruch surfaces using Page--Bérard-Bergery's ansatz \cite{P78,B82}. We also construct the interesting case of Hermitian metrics of zero Chern scalar curvature on some ruled surfaces. Furthermore, we discuss the problem of the existence in a conformal class of critical metrics of the total Chern scalar curvature, studied by Gauduchon in \cite{G80,G84}.
We show in this article that if a holomorphic vector bundle has a nonnegative Hermitian metric in the sense of Bott and Chern, which always exists on globally generated holomorphic vector bundles, then some special linear combinations of Chern forms are strongly nonnegative. This particularly implies that all the Chern numbers of such a holomorphic vector bundle are nonnegative and can be bounded below and above respectively by two special Chern numbers. As applications, we obtain a family of new results on compact connected complex manifolds which are homogeneous or can be holomorphically imm…
The paper is an attempt to resolve the prescribed Chern scalar curvature problem. We look for solutions within the conformal class of a fixed Hermitian metric. We divide the problem in three cases, according to the sign of the Gauduchon degree, that we analyse separately. In the case where the Gauduchon degree is negative, we prove that every non-identically zero and non-positive function is the Chern scalar curvature of a unique metric conformal to the fixed one. Moreover, if there exists a balanced metric with zero Chern scalar curvature, we prove that every smooth function changing sign wit…
The aim of this article is to study the geometry of Bott-Chern hypercohomology from the bimeromorphic point of view. We construct some new bimeromorphic invariants involving the cohomology for the sheaf of germs of pluriharmonic functions, the truncated holomorphic de Rham cohomology, and the de Rham cohomology. To define these invariants, using a sheaf-theoretic approach, we establish a blow-up formula together with a canonical morphism for the Bott-Chern hypercohomology. In particular, we compute the invariants of some compact complex threefolds, such as Iwasawa manifolds and quintic threefo…
We study some basic properties and examples of Hermitian metrics on complex manifolds whose traces of the curvature of the Chern connection are proportional to the metric itself.
We define Aeppli and Bott-Chern cohomology for bi-generalized complex manifolds and show that they are finite dimensional for compact bi-generalized Hermitian manifolds. For totally bounded double complexes $(A, d', d'')$, we show that the validity of $d'd''$-lemma is equivalent to having the same dimension of several cohomology groups. Some calculations of Bott-Chern cohomology groups of some bi-generalized Hermitian manifolds are given.
We present some formulae related to the Chern-Ricci curvatures and scalar curvatures of special Hermitian metrics. We prove that a compact locally conformal Kähler manifold with constant nonpositive holomorphic sectional curvature is Kähler. We also give examples of complete non-Kähler metrics with pointwise negative constant but not globally constant holomorphic sectional curvature, and complete non-Kähler metric with zero holomorphic sectional curvature and nonvanishing curvature tensor.
Let $X$ be a normal compact Kähler space with klt singularities and torsion canonical bundle. We show that $X$ admits arbitrarily small deformations that are projective varieties if its locally trivial deformation space is smooth. We then prove that this unobstructedness assumption holds in at least three cases: if $X$ has toroidal singularities, if $X$ has finite quotient singularities, and if the second cohomology group of its tangent sheaf vanishes.
