We study geometric and statistical properties of complex rational maps satisfying the Topological Collet-Eckmann Condition. We show that every such a rational map possesses a unique conformal probability measure of minimal exponent, and that this measure is non-atomic, ergodic and that its Hausdorff dimension is equal to the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. Furthermore, we show that there is a unique invariant probability measure that is absolutely continuous with respect to this conformal measure, and we show that this measure is exponentially mixing (it has exponential decay of correlations) and that it satisfies the Central Limit Theorem.
We also show that for a complex rational map f the existence of such an invariant measure characterizes the Topological Collet-Eckmann Condition, and that this measure is the unique equilibrium state with potential - HD(J(f)) ln |f'|.
In this short note we observe that within the family of slowly recurrent rational maps on the Riemann sphere, the Collet-Eckmann, second Collet-Eckmann, and topological Collet-Eckmann conditions are equivalent and also invariant under topological conjugacy.
In this paper we study perturbations of rational Collet-Eckmann maps for which the Julia set is the whole sphere, and for which the critical set is allowed to be slowly recurrent. We show that any such map is a Lebesgue density point of Collet-Eckmann maps in the space of rational maps of the same degree at least $2$.
This paper is devoted to study the topological invariance of several non-uniform hyperbolicity conditions of one-dimensional maps. In contrast with the case of maps with only one critical point, it is known that for maps with several critical points the Collet-Eckmann condition is not in itself invariance under topological conjugacy. We show that the Collet-Eckmann condition together with any of several slow recurrence conditions is invariant under topological conjugacy. This extends and gives a new proof of a result by Luzzatto and Wang that also applies to the complex setting.
We show that if f_t is a holomorphic family of quadratic-like maps with all periodic orbits repelling so that for each real t the map f_t is a real Collet-Eckmann S-unimodal map then, writing m_t for the unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure of f_t, the map t -> \int g dm_t is real analytic for any real analytic function g.
We provide a strengthened version of the famous Jakobson's theorem. Consider an interval map $f$ satisfying a summability condition. For a generic one-parameter family $f_t$ of maps with $f_0=f$, we prove that $t=0$ is a Lebesgue density point of the set of parameters for which $f_t$ satisfies both the Collect-Eckmann condition and a strong polynomial recurrence condition.
The moduli space $\mathcal{M}_d$ of degree $d\geq2$ rational maps can naturally be endowed with a measure $μ_\mathrm{bif}$ detecting maximal bifurcations, called the bifurcation measure. We prove that the support of the bifurcation measure $μ_\mathrm{bif}$ has positive Lebesgue measure. To do so, we establish a general sufficient condition for the conjugacy class of a rational map to belong to the support of $μ_\mathrm{bif}$ and we exhibit a large set of Collet-Eckmann rational maps which satisfy this condition. As a consequence, we get a set of Collet-Eckmann rational maps of positive Lebesgu…
In rational dynamics, we prove the existence of a polynomial that satisfies the Topological Collet-Eckmann condition, but which has a recurrent critical orbit that is not Collet-Eckmann. This shows that the converse of the main theorem in [11] does not hold. In interval dynamics, we show that the Collet-Eckmann property for recurrent critical orbits is not a topological invariant for real polynomials with negative Schwarzian derivative. This contradicts a conjecture of Swiatek [22].
We show that Fatou components of a semi-hyperbolic rational map are John domains and that the converse does not hold. This generalizes a famous result of Carleson, Jones and Yoccoz. We show that a connected Julia set is locally connected for a large class of non-uniformly hyperbolic rational maps. This class is more general than semi-hyperbolicity and includes Collet-Eckmann and Topological Collet-Eckmann maps and maps verifying a summability condition (as considered by Graczyk and Smirnov).
We show that a strengthened version of the Collet-Eckmann condition for multimodal maps is topologically invariant. In particular, if f is non-uniformly expanding and the critical points are generic with respect to the absolutely continuous invariant measure, then any map g topologically conjugate to f is also non-uniformly expanding.
We show some level-2 large deviation principles for rational maps satisfying a strong form of non-uniform hyperbolicity, called "Topological Collet-Eckmann". More precisely, we prove a large deviation principle for the distribution of iterated preimages, periodic points, and Birkhoff averages. For this purpose we show that each H{ö}lder continuous potential admits a unique equilibrium state, and that the pressure function can be characterized in terms of iterated preimages, periodic points, and Birkhoff averages. Then we use a variant of a general result of Kifer.
In an algebraic family of rational maps of $\mathbb{P}^1$, we show that, for almost every parameter for the trace of the bifurcation current of a marked critical value, the critical value is Collet-Eckmann. This extends previous results of Graczyk and Świcatek in the unicritical family, using Makarov theorem. Our methods are based instead on ideas of laminar currents theory.
We prove that there is a residual set of families of smooth or analytic unimodal maps with quadratic critical point and negative Schwarzian derivative such that almost every non-regular parameter is Collet-Eckmann with subexponential recurrence of the critical orbit. Those conditions lead to a detailed and robust statistical description of the dynamics. This proves the Palis conjecture in this setting.
We prove that almost every non-regular real quadratic map is Collet-Eckmann and has polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit (proving a conjecture by Sinai). It follows that typical quadratic maps have excellent ergodic properties, as exponential decay of correlations (Keller and Nowicki, Young) and stochastic stability in the strong sense (Baladi and Viana). This is an important step to get the same results for more general families of unimodal maps.
We characterize two of the most studied non-uniform hyperbolicity conditions for rational maps, semi-hyperbolicity and the topological Collet-Eckmann condition, in terms of the maximal entropy measure. Using the same tools in the proof of these results we give an extension of a result of Carleson, Jones and Yoccoz, that semi-hyperbolicity characterizes those polynomial maps whose basin of attraction of infinity is a John domain, to rational maps having a completely invariant attracting basin.
We study two classes of dynamical systems with holes: expanding maps of the interval and Collet-Eckmann maps with singularities. In both cases, we prove that there is a natural absolutely continuous conditionally invariant measure $μ$ (a.c.c.i.m.) with the physical property that strictly positive Hölder continuous functions converge to the density of $μ$ under the renormalized dynamics of the system. In addition, we construct an invariant measure $ν$, supported on the Cantor set of points that never escape from the system, that is ergodic and enjoys exponential decay of correlations for Hölder…
We develop an abstract framework for obtaining optimal rates of mixing and higher order asymptotics for infinite measure semiflows. Previously, such results were restricted to the situation where there is a first return Poincaré map that is uniformly expanding and Markov. As illustrations of the method, we consider semiflows over nonMarkov Pomeau-Manneville intermittent maps with infinite measure, and we also obtain mixing rates for semiflows over Collet-Eckmann maps with nonintegrable roof function.
This paper is devoted to the study of the thermodynamic formalism for a class of real multimodal maps. This class contains, but it is larger than, Collet-Eckmann. For a map in this class, we prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for the geometric potentials $-t \log|Df|$, for the largest possible interval of parameters $t$. We also study the regularity and convexity properties of the pressure function, completely characterising the first order phase transitions. Results concerning the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures with respect to the Lebesgue measure are …
We prove that a $C^3$ critical circle map without periodic points has zero Lyapunov exponent with respect to its unique invariant Borel probability measure. Moreover, no critical point of such a map satisfy the Collet-Eckmann condition. This result is proved directly from the well-known real a-priori bounds, without using Pesin's theory. We also show how our methods yield an analogous result for infinitely renormalizable unimodal maps of any combinatorial type. Finally we discuss an application of these facts to the study of neutral measures of certain rational maps of the Riemann sphere.
We introduce and study a non uniform hyperbolicity condition for complex rational maps, that does not involve a growth condition. We call this condition Backward Contraction. We show this condition is weaker than the Collet-Eckmann condition, and than the summability condition with exponent~1. Our main result is a connecting lemma for Backward Contracting rational maps, roughly saying that we can perturb a rational map to connect each critical orbit in the Julia set with an orbit that does not accumulate on critical points. The proof of this result is based on Thurston's algorithm and some rig…
We consider the thermodynamic formalism of a complex rational map $f$ of degree at least two, viewed as a dynamical system acting on the Riemann sphere. More precisely, for a real parameter $t$ we study the (non-)existence of equilibrium states of $f$ for the potential $-t \ln |f'|$, and the analytic dependence on $t$ of the corresponding pressure function. We give a fairly complete description of the thermodynamic formalism of a rational map that is "expanding away from critical points" and that has arbitrarily small "nice sets" with some additional properties. Our results apply in particular…
We consider C^2 families t->f_t of C^4 nondegenerate unimodal maps. We study the absolutely continuous invariant probability (SRB) measure m_t of f_t, as a function of t on the set of Collet-Eckmann (CE) parameters: Upper bounds: Assuming existence of a transversal CE parameter, we find a positive measure set D of CE parameters, and, for each s in D, a subset D0 of D of polynomially recurrent parameters containing s as a Lebesgue density point, and constants C>1, G >4, so that, for every 1/2-Holder function A (of 1/2-Holder norm |A|) and all t in D0, |\int A dm_t -\int A dm_s| < C |A| |t-s|^{1…
Area-preserving maps have been observed to undergo a universal period-doubling cascade, analogous to the famous Feigenbaum-Coullet-Tresser period doubling cascade in one-dimensional dynamics. A renormalization approach has been used by Eckmann, Koch and Wittwer in a computer-assisted proof of existence of a conservative renormalization fixed point. Furthermore, it has been shown by Gaidashev, Johnson and Martens that infinitely renormalizable maps in a neighborhood of this fixed point admit invariant Cantor sets with vanishing Lyapunov exponents on which dynamics for any two maps is smoothly c…
