We investigate the dissipativity properties of a class of scalar second order parabolic partial differential equations with time-dependent coefficients. We provide explicit condition on the drift term which ensure that the relative entropy of one particular orbit with respect to some other one decreases to zero. The decay rate is obtained explicitly by the use of a Sobolev logarithmic inequality for the associated semigroup, which is derived by an adaptation of Bakry's $Γ-$ calculus. As a byproduct, the systematic method for constructing entropies which we propose here also yields the well-known intermediate asymptotics for the heat equation in a very quick way, and without having to rescale the original equation.
We give a representation of the fractional integral for symmetric Markovian semigroups as the projection of martingale transforms and prove the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev(HLS) inequality based on this representation. The proof rests on a new inequality for a fractional Littlewood-Paley $g$-function.
We prove that the logarithmic Sobolev constant for the inhomogeneous symmetric nearest neighbour zero range process on a cube of size N^d grows as N^2. We apply this result to the inhomogeneous process which arises in the study of the homogeneous version of the zero range interacting particle system with colours.
$μ$ being a nonnegative measure satisfying some log-Sobolev inequality, we give conditions on F for the measure $ν=e^{-2F} μ$ to also satisfy some log-Sobolev inequality. Explicit examples are studied.
We consider a time inhomogeneous strong Markov process $(ξ_t)_{t\ge 0}$ taking values in a Polish state space whose semigroup has a $T$-periodic structure. We give simple conditions which imply ergodicity of the grid chain $(ξ_{kT})_{k\in \mathbb{N}_0}$ In case of $d$-dimensional possibly degenerate diffusions, the conditions are stated in terms of drift and diffusion coefficient of the process.
We study time-inhomogeneous Markov chains with finite state spaces using Nash and logarithmic-Sobolev inequalities, and the notion of $c$-stability. We develop the basic theory of such functional inequalities in the time-inhomogeneous context and provide illustrating examples.
In this work, we consider a class of second order uniformly elliptic operators with smooth and bounded coefficients. We provide some estimates on the norm of the semigroup generated by these operators acting on weighted Sobolev spaces, where the weight satisfies some specific conditions. Our proof relies on a classical bound for the derivatives of fundamental solution to parabolic equations.
Through the main example of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup, the Bakry-Emery criterion is presented as a main tool to get functional inequalities as Poincaré or logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. Moreover an alternative method using the optimal mass transportation, is also given to obtain the logarithmic Sobolev inequality.
A time inhomogeneous generalized Mehler semigroup on a real separable Hilbert space ${\mathds{H}}$ is defined through $$ p_{s,t}f(x)=\int_{\mathds{H}} f(U(t,s)x+y)\,μ_{t,s}(dy), \quad t\geq s, \ x\in{\mathds{H}} $$ for every bounded measurable function $f$ on ${\mathds{H}}$, where $(U(t,s))_{t\geq s}$ is an evolution family of bounded operators on ${\mathds{H}}$ and $(μ_{t,s})_{t\geq s}$ is a family of probability measures on $({\mathds{H}}, \B({\mathds{H}}))$ satisfying the time inhomogeneous skew convolution equations $$μ_{t,s}=μ_{t,r}*(μ_{r,s}\circ U(t,r)^{-1}),\quad t\geq r\geq s.$$ This k…
We introduce heat semigroup-based Besov classes in the general framework of Dirichlet spaces. General properties of those classes are studied and quantitative regularization estimates for the heat semigroup in this scale of spaces are obtained. As a highlight of the paper, we obtain a far reaching $L^p$-analogue, $p \ge 1$, of the Sobolev inequality that was proved for $p=2$ by N. Varopoulos under the assumption of ultracontractivity for the heat semigroup. The case $p=1$ is of special interest since it yields isoperimetric type inequalities.
Let $L_t:=Δ_t+Z_t$ for a $C^{1,1}$-vector field $Z$ on a differential manifold $M$ with boundary $\partial M$, where $Δ_t$ is the Laplacian induced by a time dependent metric $g_t$ differentiable in $t\in [0,T_c)$. We first introduce the reflecting diffusion process generated by $L_t$ and establish the derivative formula for the associated diffusion semigroup; then construct the couplings for the reflecting $L_t$-diffusion processes by parallel and reflecting displacement, which implies the gradient estimates of the associated heat semigroup; and finally, present a number of equivalent inequal…
In this article we study a class of non-Archimedean pseudodifferential operators whose symbols are negative definite functions. We prove that these operators extend to generators of Feller semigroups. In order to study these operators, we introduce a new class of anisotropic Sobolev spaces, which are the natural domains for the operators considered here. We also study the Cauchy problem for certain pseudodifferential equations.
In this paper we introduce non-decreasing jump processes with independent and time non-homogeneous increments. Although they are not Lévy processes, they somehow generalize subordinators in the sense that their Laplace exponents are possibly different Bernštein functions for each time $t$. By means of these processes, a generalization of subordinate semigroups in the sense of Bochner is proposed. Because of time-inhomogeneity, two-parameter semigroups (propagators) arise and we provide a Phillips formula which leads to time dependent generators. The inverse processes are also investigated and …
We obtain and study new $Φ$-entropy inequalities for diffusion semigroups, with Poincaré or logarithmic Sobolev inequalities as particular cases. From this study we derive the asymptotic behaviour of a large class of linear Fokker-Plank type equations under simple conditions, widely extending previous results. Nonlinear diffusion equations are also studied by means of these inequalities. The $Γ_2$ criterion of D. Bakry and M. Emery appears as a main tool in the analysis, in local or integral forms.
We consider the heat equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the tubular neighborhood of a closed Riemannian submanifold. We show that, as the tube diameter tends to zero, a suitably rescaled and renormalized semigroup converges to a limit semigroup in Sobolev spaces of arbitrarily large Sobolev index.
Introduced by Lu and Yau (CMP, 1993), the martingale decomposition method is a powerful recursive strategy that has produced sharp log-Sobolev inequalities for homogeneous particle systems. However, the intractability of certain covariance terms has so far precluded applications to heterogeneous models. Here we demonstrate that the existence of an appropriate coupling can be exploited to bypass this limitation effortlessly. Our main result is a dimension-free modified log-Sobolev inequality for zero-range processes on the complete graph, under the only requirement that all rate increments lie …
Using backward propagators, we construct inhomogeneous Random Evolutions on Banach spaces driven by (uniformly ergodic) Semi-Markov processes. After studying some of their properties (measurability, continuity, integral representation), we establish a Law of Large Numbers for such inhomogeneous Random Evolutions, and more precisely their weak convergence - in the Skorohod space $D$ - to an inhomogeneous semigroup. A martingale characterization of these inhomogeneous Random Evolutions is also obtained. Finally, we present applications to inhomogeneous Lévy Random Evolutions.
In this paper we establish quantitative results about the bridges of the Langevin dynamics and the associated reciprocal processes. They include an equivalence between gradient estimates for bridge semigroups and couplings, comparison principles, bounds of the distance between bridges of different Langevin dynamics, and a Logarithmic Sobolev inequality for bridge measures. The existence of an invariant measure for the bridges is also discussed and quantitative bounds for the convergence to the invariant measure are proved . All results are based on a seemingly new expression of the drift of a …
In this paper, we consider first order Sobolev spaces with Robin boundary condition on unbounded Lipschitz domains. Hunt processes are associated with these spaces. We prove that the semigroup of these processes are doubly Feller. As a corollary, we provide a condition for semigroups generated by these processes being compact.
The dimension free Harnack inequality for the heat semigroup is established on the $\RCD(K,\infty)$ space, which is a non-smooth metric measure space having the Ricci curvature bounded from below in the sense of Lott-Sturm-Villani plus the Cheeger energy being quadratic. As its applications, the heat semigroup entropy-cost inequality and contractivity properties of the semigroup are studied, and a strong enough Gaussian concentration implying the log-Sobolev inequality is also shown as a generalization of the one on the smooth Riemannian manifold.
The stability and contraction properties of positive integral semigroups on Polish spaces are investigated. Our novel analysis is based on the extension of V-norm contraction methods, associated to functionally weighted Banach spaces for Markov semigroups, to positive semigroups. This methodology is applied to a general class of positive and possibly time-inhomogeneous bounded integral semigroups and their normalised versions. The spectral theorems that we develop are an extension of Perron-Frobenius and Krein-Rutman theorems for positive operators to a class of time-varying positive semigroup…
By using a general version of curvature condition, derivative inequalities are established for a large class of subelliptic diffusion semigroups. As applications, the Harnack/cost-entropy/cost-variance inequalities for the diffusion semigroups, and the Poincaré/log-Sobolev inequalities for the associated Dirichlet forms in the symmetric case, are derived. Our results largely generalize and partly improve the corresponding ones obtained recently in [BB].
Matrix concentration inequalities provide information about the probability that a random matrix is close to its expectation with respect to the $l_2$ operator norm. This paper uses semigroup methods to derive sharp nonlinear matrix inequalities. In particular, it is shown that the classic Bakry-Émery curvature criterion implies subgaussian concentration for "matrix Lipschitz" functions. This argument circumvents the need to develop a matrix version of the log-Sobolev inequality, a technical obstacle that has blocked previous attempts to derive matrix concentration inequalities in this setting…

We provide explicit lower bounds for the deficit in the Gaussian logarithmic Sobolev inequality in terms of differential operators that are naturally associated with the so-called Stein characterization of the Gaussian distribution. The techniques are based on a crucial use of the representation of the relative Fisher information, along the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup, in terms of the Minimal Mean-Square Error from information theory.
We introduce and study a notion of Orlicz hypercontractive semigroups. We analyze their relations with general $F$-Sobolev inequalities, thus extending Gross hypercontractivity theory. We provide criteria for these Sobolev type inequalities and for related properties. In particular, we implement in the context of probability measures the ideas of Maz'ja's capacity theory, and present equivalent forms relating the capacity of sets to their measure. Orlicz hypercontractivity efficiently describes the integrability improving properties of the Heat semigroup associated to the Boltzmann measures $μ…
The hypercontractivity is proved for the Markov semigroup associated to a class of finite/infinite dimensional stochastic Hamiltonian systems. Consequently, the Markov semigroup is exponentially convergent to the invariant probability measure in entropy (thus, also in $L^2$), and is compact for large time. Since the log-Sobolev inequality is invalid for the associated Dirichlet form, we introduce a general result on the hypercontractivity using the Harnack inequality with power. The main results are illustrated by concrete examples.
Consider the semigroup of random walk on a complete graph, which we call the Potts semigroup. Diaconis and Saloff-Coste computed the maximum of the ratio of the relative entropy and the Dirichlet form obtaining the constant $α_2$ in the $2$-log-Sobolev inequality ($2$-LSI). In this paper, we obtain the best possible non-linear inequality relating entropy and the Dirichlet form (i.e., $p$-NLSI, $p\ge1$). As an example, we show $α_1 = 1+\frac{1+o(1)}{\log k}$. By integrating the $1$-NLSI we obtain the new strong data processing inequality (SDPI), which in turn allows us to improve results of Mos…
This note presents a method based on Feynman-Kac semigroups for logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. It follows the recent work of Bonnefont and Joulin on intertwining relations for diffusion operators, formerly used for spectral gap inequalities, and related to perturbation techniques. In particular, it goes beyond the Bakry-{É}mery criterion and allows to investigate high-dimensional effects on the optimal logarithmic Sobolev constant. The method is illustrated on particular examples (namely Subbotin distributions and double-well potentials), for which explicit dimension-free bounds on the latte…
Let $M$ be a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary $\pp M$ and $L= \DD+Z$ for a $C^1$-vector field $Z$ on $M$. Several equivalent statements, including the gradient and Poincaré/log-Sobolev type inequalities of the Neumann semigroup generated by $L$, are presented for lower bound conditions on the curvature of $L$ and the second fundamental form of $\pp M$. The main result not only generalizes the corresponding known ones on manifolds without boundary, but also clarifies the role of the second fundamental form in the analysis of the Neumann semigroup. Moreover, the Lévy-Gromov isoperimetri…
We introduce the class of bounded variation (BV) functions in a general framework of strictly local Dirichlet spaces with doubling measure. Under the 2-Poincaré inequality and a weak Bakry-Émery curvature type condition, this BV class is identified with the heat semigroup based Besov class $\mathbf{B}^{1,1/2}(X)$ that was introduced in our previous paper. Assuming furthermore a quasi Bakry-Émery curvature type condition, we identify the Sobolev class $W^{1,p}(X)$ with $\mathbf{B}^{p,1/2}(X)$ for $p>1$. Consequences of those identifications in terms of isoperimetric and Sobolev inequalities wit…
We investigate yet another approach to understand the limit behaviour of Brownian motion conditioned to stay within a tubular neighbourhood around a closed and connected submanifold of a Riemannian manifold. In this context, we identify a second order generator subject to Dirichlet conditions on the boundary of the tube and study its associated semigroups. After a suitable rescaling and renormalization procedure, we obtain convergence of these semigroups, both in $L^2$ and in Sobolev spaces of arbitrarily large index, to a limit semigroup, as the tube diameter tends to zero. As a byproduct, we…
We establish an improved form of the classical logarithmic Sobolev inequality for the Gaussian measure restricted to probability densities which satisfy a Poincaré inequality. The result implies a lower bound on the deficit in terms of the quadratic Kantorovich-Wasserstein distance. We similarly investigate the deficit in the Talagrand quadratic transportation cost inequality this time by means of an ${\rm L}^1$-Kantorovich-Wasserstein distance, optimal for product measures, and deduce a lower bound on the deficit in the logarithmic Sobolev inequality in terms of this metric. Applications are …
We prove the unique weak solvability of stochastic differential equations with time-inhomogeneous drift in essentially the largest (scaling-invariant) Morrey class, i.e.\,with integrability parameter $q>1$ close to $1$. The constructed weak solutions constitute a Feller evolution family. The proofs are based on a detailed Sobolev regularity theory of the corresponding parabolic equation.
We prove that in the context of general Markov semigroups Beckner inequalities with constants separated from zero as $p\to 1^+$ are equivalent to the modified log Sobolev inequality (previously only one implication was known to hold in this generality). Further, by adapting an argument by Boucheron et al. we derive Sobolev type moment estimates which hold under these functional inequalities. We illustrate our results with applications to concentration of measure estimates (also of higher order, beyond the case of Lipschitz functions) for various stochastic models, including random permutations…
In the study of Markovian processes, one of the principal achievements is the equivalence between the $Φ$-Sobolev inequalities and an exponential decrease of the $Φ$-entropies. In this work, we develop a framework of Markov semigroups on matrix-valued functions and generalize the above equivalence to the exponential decay of matrix $Φ$-entropies. This result also specializes to spectral gap inequalities and modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the random matrix setting. To establish the main result, we define a non-commutative generalization of the carré du champ operator, and prove a …
We provide in this work a semigroup approach to the study of singular PDEs, in the line of the paracontrolled approach developed recently by Gubinelli, Imkeller and Perkowski. Starting from a heat semigroup, we develop a functional calculus and introduce a paraproduct based on the semigroup, for which commutator estimates and Schauder estimates are proved, together with their paracontrolled extensions. This machinery allows us to investigate singular PDEs in potentially unbounded Riemannian manifolds under mild geometric conditions. As an illustration, we study the generalized parabolic Anders…
Let $P_t$ be the diffusion semigroup generated by $L:=Δ+\nabla V$ on a complete connected Riemannian manifold with $\operatorname {Ric}\ge-(σ^2ρ_o^2+c)$ for some constants $σ, c>0$ and $ρ_o$ the Riemannian distance to a fixed point. It is shown that $P_t$ is hypercontractive, or the log-Sobolev inequality holds for the associated Dirichlet form, provided $-\operatorname {Hess}_V\geδ$ holds outside of a compact set for some constant $δ>(1+\sqrt{2})σ\sqrt{d-1}.$ This indicates, at least in finite dimensions, that $\operatorname {Ric}$ and $-\operatorname {Hess}_V$ play quite different roles for …
