Colombeau generalized functions invariant under smooth (additive) one-parameter groups are characterized. This characterization is applied to generalized functions invariant under orthogonal groups of arbitrary signature, such as groups of rotations or the Lorentz group. Further, a one-dimensional Colombeau generalized function with two (real) periods is shown to be a generalized constant, when the ratio of the periods is an algebraic nonrational number. Finally, a nonstandard Colombeau generalized function invariant under standard translations is shown to be constant.
Summarizing basic facts from abstract topological modules over Colombeau generalized complex numbers we discuss duality of Colombeau algebras. In particular, we focus on generalized delta functionals and operator kernels as elements of dual spaces. A large class of examples is provided by pseudodifferential operators acting on Colombeau algebras. By a refinement of symbol calculus we review a new characterization of the wave front set for generalized functions with applications to microlocal analysis.
The aim of this paper is to prove that the well known non solvable Mizohata type partial differential equations have Colombeau generalized solutions which are distributions if and only if they are solv- able in the space of Schwartz distributions. Therefore the Colombeau generalized solvability includes both a new solution concept and new mathematical objects as solutions.
We introduce different notions of wave front set for the functionals in the dual of the Colombeau algebra $\Gc(\Om)$ providing a way to measure the $\G$ and the $\Ginf$- regularity in $\LL(\Gc(\Om),\wt{\C})$. For the smaller family of functionals having a ``basic structure'' we obtain a Fourier transform-characterization for this type of generalized wave front sets and results of noncharacteristic $\G$ and $\Ginf$-regularity.
The purpose of this paper is to construct and to study algebras of generalized Gevrey ultardistributions. We define the generalized Gevrey wave front and give its main properties. As a fundamental application, the well known Hormander's theorem on the product of two distributions is extended to the case of generalized Gevrey ultradistributions
In distribution theory the pullback of a general distribution by a $C^{\infty}$-function is well-defined whenever the normal bundle of the $C^{\infty}$-function does not intersect the wavefront set of the distribution. However, the Colombeau theory of generalized functions allows for a pullback by an arbitrary c-bounded generalized function. It has been shown in previous work that in the case of multiplication of Colombeau functions (which is a special case of a $C^{\infty}$ pullback), the generalized wave front set of the product satisfies the same inclusion relation as in the distributional …
We define and characterize spaces of manifold-valued generalized functions and generalized vector bundle homomorphisms in the setting of the full diffeomorphism-invariant vector-valued Colombeau algebra. Furthermore, we establish point value characterizations for these spaces.
We show that for smooth manifolds X and Y, any isomorphism between the special algebra of Colombeau generalized functions on X, resp. Y is given by composition with a unique Colombeau generalized function from Y to X. We also identify the multiplicative linear functionals from the special algebra of Colombeau generalized functions on X to the ring of Colombeau generalized numbers. Up to multiplication with an idempotent generalized number, they are given by an evaluation map at a compactly supported generalized point on X.
We present some remarks about the embedding of spaces of Schwartz distributions into spaces of Colombeau generalized functions. We show that the various constructions of such embeddings existing in the literature lead in fact to the same one.
We introduce the notion of generalized function taking values in a smooth manifold into the setting of full Colombeau algebras. After deriving a number of characterization results we also introduce a corresponding concept of generalized vector bundle homomorphisms and, based on this, provide a definition of tangent map for such generalized functions.
This article is the natural continuation of the paper: Mukhammadiev A.~et al Supremum, infimum and hyperlimits of Colombeau generalized numbers in this journal. Since the ring $\tilde{R}$ of Robinson-Colombeau is non-Archimedean, a classical series $\sum_{n=0}^{+\infty}a_{n}$ of generalized numbers $a_{n}\in\tilde{R}$ is convergent if and only if $a_{n}\to0$ in the sharp topology. Therefore, this property does not permit us to generalize several classical results, mainly in the study of analytic generalized functions (as well as, e.g., in the study of sigma-additivity in integration of general…
Regularity theory in generalized function algebras of Colombeau type is largely based on the notion of ${\mathcal G}^\infty$-regularity, which reduces to $C^\infty$-regularity when restricted to Schwartz distributions. Surprisingly, in the nonstandard version of the Colombeau algebras, this basic property of ${\mathcal G}^\infty$-regularity does not hold.
We extend the functional analytic approach to Colombeau-type spaces of nonlinear generalized functions in order to study algebras of tempered generalized functions. We obtain a definition of Fourier transform of nonlinear generalized functions which has a strict inversion theorem, agrees with the classical Fourier transform for tempered distributions and preserves well-known classical properties.
This contribution presents a comprehensive analysis of Colombeau (-type) algebras in the range between the diffeomorphism invariant algebra introduced in Part I and Colombeau's original algebra. Along the way, it provides several classification results which are indispensable for obtaining an intrinsic description of a (full) Colombeau algebra on a manifold. The latter will be the focus of Part III of this series of contributions.
Modelling of singularities given by discontinuous functions or distributions by means of generalized functions has proved useful in many problems posed by physical phenomena. We introduce in a systematic way generalized functions of Colombeau that model such singularities. Moreover, we evaluate some products of singularity-modelling generalized functions whenever the result admits an associated distribution
In these lecture notes we present an introduction to non-standard analysis especially written for the community of mathematicians, physicists and engineers who do research on J. F. Colombeau' theory of new generalized functions and its applications. The main purpose of our non-standard approach to Colombeau' theory is the improvement of the properties of the scalars of the varieties of spaces of generalized functions: in our non-standard approach the sets of scalars of the functional spaces always form algebraically closed non-archimedean Cantor complete fields. In contrast, the scalars of the…
This contribution is the first in a series of three: it reports on the construction of (a fine sheaf of) diffeomorphism invariant Colombeau algebras on open sets of Eucildean space, which completes earlier approaches. Part II and III will show, among others, the way to an intrinsic definition of Colombeau algebras on manifolds which, locally, reproduces the local diffeomorphism invariant theory.
Modelling of singularities given by discontinuous functions or distributions by means of generalized functions has proved useful in many problems posed by physical phenomena. We introduce in a systematic way generalized functions of Colombeau that model singularities given by distributions with singular point support. Moreover, we evaluate various products of such generalized models whenever the results admit associated distributions. The results obtained follow the idea of a well-known result of Jan Mikusinski on balancing of singular distributional products.
Based on the theory of Fermat reals we introduce new topologies on spaces of Colombeau generalized points and derive some of their fundamental properties. In particular, we obtain metric topologies on the space of near-standard generalized points that induce the standard Euclidean topology on the reals. We also give a new description of the sharp topology in terms of the natural extension of the absolute value (or of the defining semi-norms in the case of locally convex spaces) that allows to preserve a number of classical notions. Building on a new point value characterization of Colombeau ge…
We define a general notion of set of indices which, using concepts from pre-ordered sets theory, permits to unify the presentation of several Colombeau-type algebras of nonlinear generalized functions. In every set of indices it is possible to generalize Landau's notion of big-O such that its usual properties continue to hold. Using this generalized notion of big-O, these algebras can be formally defined the same way as the special Colombeau algebra. Finally, we examine the scope of this formalism and show its effectiveness by applying it to the proof of the pointwise characterization in Colom…
We define a type of generalized asymptotic series called $v$-asymptotic. We show that every function with moderate growth at infinity has a $v$-asymptotic expansion. We also describe the set of $v$-asymptotic series, where a given function with moderate growth has a unique $v$-asymptotic expansion. As an application to random matrix theory we calculate the coefficients and establish the uniqueness of the $v$-asymptotic expansion of an integral with a large parameter. As another application (with significance in the non-linear theory of generalized functions) we show that every Colombeau's gene…
Inspired by nonstandard analysis, we define and study internal subsets and internal functions in algebras of Colombeau generalized functions. We prove a saturation principle for internal sets and provide applications to Colombeau algebras.
We present a construction of algebras of generalized functions of Colombeau-type which, instead of asymptotic estimates with respect to a regularization parameter, employs only topological estimates on certain spaces of kernels for its definition.
We show that contrary to recent papers by S. Albeverio, A. Yu. Khrennikov and V. Shelkovich, point values do not determine elements of the so-called p-adic Colombeau-Egorov algebra uniquely. We further show in a more general way that for an Egorov algebra of generalized functions on a locally compact ultrametric space (M,d) taking values in a non-trivial ring, a point value characterization holds if and only if (M,d) is discrete. Finally, following an idea due to M. Kunzinger and M. Oberguggenberger, a generalized point value characterization of such an Egorov algebra is given. Elements of the…
We use the general notion of set of indices to construct algebras of nonlinear generalized functions of Colombeau type. They are formally defined in the same way as the special Colombeau algebra, but based on more general growth condition formalized by the notion of asymptotic gauge. This generalization includes the special, full and nonstandard analysis based Colombeau type algebras in a unique framework. We compare Colombeau algebras generated by asymptotic gauges with other analogous construction, and we study systematically their properties, with particular attention to the existence and d…
We present a differential algebra of generalized functions over a field of generalized scalars by means of several axioms in terms of general algebra and topology. Our differential algebra is of Colombeau type in the sense that it contains a copy of the space of Schwartz distributions, and the set of regular distributions with $\mathcal C^\infty$-kernels forms a differential subalgebra. We discuss the uniqueness of the field of scalars as well as the consistency and independence of our axioms. This article is written mostly to satisfy the interest of mathematicians and scientists who do not ne…
We study the asymptotics at zero of continuous functions on (0, 1] by means of their asymptotic ideals, i.e., ideals in the ring of continuous functions on (0, 1] satisfying a polynomial growth condition at 0 modulo rapidly decreasing functions at 0. As our main result, we characterize maximal and prime ideals in terms of maximal and prime filters.
We construct an algebra of generalized functions endowed with a canonical embedding of the space of Schwartz distributions. We offer a solution to the problem of multiplication of Schwartz distributions similar to but different from Colombeau's solution. We show that the set of scalars of our algebra is an algebraically closed field unlike its counterpart in Colombeau theory, which is a ring with zero divisors. We prove a Hahn-Banach extension principle which does not hold in Colombeau theory. We establish a connection between our theory with non-standard analysis and thus answer, although ind…
It is well-known that the notion of limit in the sharp topology of sequences of Colombeau generalized numbers $\widetilde{\mathbb{R}}$ does not generalize classical results. E.g.~the sequence $\frac{1}{n}\not\to0$ and a sequence $(x_{n})_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ converges \emph{if} and only if $x_{n+1}-x_{n}\to0$. This has several deep consequences, e.g.~in the study of series, analytic generalized functions, or sigma-additivity and classical limit theorems in integration of generalized functions. The lacking of these results is also connected to the fact that $\widetilde{\mathbb{R}}$ is necessarily …
We present a geometric approach to diffeomorphism invariant full Colombeau algebras which allows a particularly clear view on the construction of the intrinsically defined algebra $\hat{\mathcal G}(M)$ on the manifold $M$ given in (Grosser et al., Adv. Math. 166 (2002), 179--206).
In [11], we introduced the notion of asymptotic gauge (AG), and we used it to construct Colombeau AG-algebras. This construction concurrently generalizes that of many different algebras used in Colombeau's theory, e.g. the special one $\mathcal{G}^{\srm}$, the full one $\gse$, the NSA based algebra of asymptotic functions $\hat{\mathcal{G}}$, and the diffeomorphism invariant algebras $\gsd$, $\mathcal{G}^{2}$ and $\hat{\mathcal{G}}$. In this paper we study the categorical properties of the construction of Colombeau AG-algebras with respect to the choice of the AG, and we show their consequence…
The paper is devoted to proving an existence and uniqueness result for generalized solutions to semilinear wave equations with a small nonlinearity in space dimensions 1, 2, 3. The setting is the one of Colombeau algebras of generalized functions. It is shown that for a nonlinearity of arbitrary growth and sign, but multiplied with a small parameter, the initial value problem for the semilinear wave equation has a unique solution in the Colombeau algebra of generalized functions of bounded type. The proof relies on a fixed point theorem in the ultra-metric topology on the algebras involved. In…
This article is a natural continuation of the paper Tiwari, D., Giordano, P., Hyperseries in the non-Archimedean ring of Colombeau generalized numbers in this journal. We study one variable hyper-power series by analyzing the notion of radius of convergence and proving classical results such as algebraic operations, composition and reciprocal of hyper-power series. We then define and study one variable generalized real analytic functions, considering their derivation, integration, a suitable formulation of the identity theorem and the characterization by uniform upper bounds of derivatives on …
The Colombeau algebra of generalized functions allows to unrestrictedly carry out products of distributions. We analyze this operation from a microlocal point of view, deriving a general inclusion relation for wave front sets of products in the algebra. Furthermore, we give explicit examples showing that the given result is optimal, i.e. its assumptions cannot be weakened. Finally, we discuss the interrelation of these results with the concept of pullback under smooth maps.
We tackle the problem of finding a suitable categorical framework for generalized functions used in mathematical physics for linear and non-linear PDEs. We are looking for a Cartesian closed category which contains both Schwartz distributions and Colombeau generalized functions as natural objects. We study Frölicher spaces, diffeological spaces and functionally generated spaces as frameworks for generalized functions. The latter are similar to Frölicher spaces, but starting from locally defined functionals. Functionally generated spaces strictly lie between Frölicher spaces and diffeological s…
Based on a refinement of the notion of internal sets in Colombeau's theory, so-called strongly internal sets, we introduce the space of generalized smooth functions, a maximal extension of Colombeau generalized functions. Generalized smooth functions as morphisms between sets of generalized points form a sub-category of the category of topological spaces. In particular, they can be composed unrestrictedly.
We define the algebra of Colombeau generalized functions on a subset A of the space of d-dimensional generalized points. If the domain A is open, such generalized functions can be identified with pointwise maps from A into the ring of Colombeau generalized numbers. We study analyticity in these algebras, if the domain is an open subset of the complex generalized points. In particular, if the domain is an open ball for the sharp norm, we characterize analyticity and give a unicity theorem involving the values at generalized points.
We present an extension of J. F. Colombeau's theory of nonlinear generalized functions to spaces of generalized sections of vector bundles. Our construction builds on classical functional analytic notions, which is the key to having a canonical geometric embedding of vector bundle valued distributions into spaces of generalized sections. This permits to have tensor products, invariance under diffeomorphisms, covariant derivatives and the sheaf property. While retaining as much compatibility to L. Schwartz' theory of distributions as possible, our theory provides the basis for a rigorous and ge…
Using the existence of infinite numbers $k$ in the non-Archimedean ring of Robinson-Colombeau, we define the hyperfinite Fourier transform (HFT) by considering integration extended to $[-k,k]^{n}$ instead of $(-\infty,\infty)^{n}$. In order to realize this idea, the space of generalized functions we consider is that of generalized smooth functions (GSF), an extension of classical distribution theory sharing many nonlinear properties with ordinary smooth functions, like the closure with respect to composition, a good integration theory, and several classical theorems of calculus. Even if the fi…
We consider the Cauchy problem for a hyperbolic pseudodifferential operator whose symbol is generalized, resembling a representative of a Colombeau generalized function. Such equations arise, for example, after a reduction-decoupling of second-order model systems of differential equations in seismology. We prove existence of a unique generalized solution under log-type growth conditions on the symbol, thereby extending known results for the case of differential operators with generalized functions as coefficients.
This paper gives a comprehensive analysis of algebras of Colombeau-type generalized functions in the range between the diffeomorphism-invariant quotient algebra $\mathcal{G}^d = \mathcal{E}_M/\mathcal{N}$ introduced in part I and Colombeau's original algebra $\mathcal{G}^e$. Three main results are established: First, a simple criterion describing membership in $\mathcal{N}$ (applicable to all types of Colombeau algebras) is given. Second, two counterexamples demonstrate that $\mathcal{G}^d$ is not injectively included in $\mathcal{G}^e$. Finally, it is shown that in the range ``between'' $\mat…
We present the construction of an associative, commutative algebra $\hat {\mathcal G}$ of generalized functions on a manifold $X$ satisfying the following optimal set of permanence properties: (i)The space of distributions on $X$ is linearly embedded into $\hat {\mathcal G}$, $f(p)\equiv 1$ is the unity in the algebra. (ii) For every smooth vector field $ξ$ on $X$ there exists a derivation operator $\hat L_ξ: \hat {\mathcal G} \to \hat {\mathcal G}$ which is linear and satisfies the Leibniz rule. (iii) $L_ξ$ restricted to the space of distributions on $X$ is the usual Lie derivative. (iv) Mult…
We illustrate the use of internal objects in the nonlinear theory of generalized functions by means of an application to microlocal analysis in Colombeau algebras.
We offer an axiomatic definition of a differential algebra of generalized functions over an algebraically closed non-Archimedean field. This algebra is of {\em Colombeau type} in the sense that it contains a copy of the space of Schwartz distributions. We study the uniqueness of the objects we define and the consistency of our axioms. The article is aimed at mathematicians and physicists who are interested in the non-linear theory of generalized functions, but who are not necessarily familiar with the original Colombeau theory. We assume, however, some basic familiarity with the Schwartz theor…
Extending the construction of the (intrinsically defined) full algebra of scalar valued Colombeau functions on a smooth manifold M (Grosser et al., Adv. Math. 166 (2002), 179-206) we present a suitable basic space for eventually obtaining tensor valued generalized functions on M, via the usual quotient construction. This basic space canonically contains the tensor valued distributions and permits a natural extension of the classical Lie derivative. Its members are smooth functions depending - via a third slot - on so-called transport operators, in addition to slots one (smooth n-forms on M) an…
We set-up and solve the Cauchy problem for Schrödinger-type differential operators with generalized functions as coefficients, in particular, allowing for distributional coefficients in the principal part. Equations involving such kind of operators appeared in models of deep earth seismology. We prove existence and uniqueness of Colombeau generalized solutions and analyze the relations with classical and distributional solutions. Furthermore, we provide a construction of generalized initial values that may serve as square roots of arbitrary probability measures.
An explicit counterexample shows that contrary to the situation in the special Colombeau algebra, positivity and invertibility cannot be characterized pointwise in algebras of tempered generalized functions. Further a point value characterization of the latter is refined.
We offer an axiomatic definition of a differential algebra of generalized functions over an algebraically closed non-Archimedean field. This algebra is of Colombeau type in the sense that it contains a copy of the space of Schwartz distributions. We study the uniqueness of the objects we define and the consistency of our axioms. Next, we identify an inconsistency in the conventional Laplace transform theory. As an application we offer a free of contradictions alternative in the framework of our algebra of generalized functions. The article is aimed at mathematicians, physicists and engineers w…
We develop the diffeomorphism invariant Colombeau-type algebra of nonlinear generalized functions in a modern and compact way. Using a unifying formalism for the local setting and on manifolds, the construction becomes simpler and more accessible than previously in the literature.
We study generalized group actions on differentiable manifolds in the Colombeau framework, extending previous work on flows of generalized vector fields and symmetry group analysis of generalized solutions. As an application, we analyze group invariant generalized functions in this setting.
We study invariance properties of Colombeau generalized functions under actions of smooth Lie transformation groups. Several characterization results analogous to the smooth setting are derived and applications to generalized rotational invariance are given.
We present an extension of the methods of classical Lie group analysis of differential equations to equations involving generalized functions (in particular: distributions). A suitable framework for such a generalization is provided by Colombeau's theory of algebras of generalized functions. We show that under some mild conditions on the differential equations, symmetries of classical solutions remain symmetries for generalized solutions. Moreover, we introduce a generalization of the infinitesimal methods of group analysis that allows to compute symmetries of linear and nonlinear differential…
In this paper, weakly homogeneous generalized functions in the special Colombeau algebras are determined up to equality in the sense of generalized distributions. This yields characterizations that are formally similar to distribution theory. Further, we give several characterizations of equality in the sense of generalized distributions in these algebras.
We review our recent formulation of Colombeau type algebras as Hausdorff sequence spaces with ultranorms, defined by sequences of exponential weights. We extend previous results and give new perspectives related to echelon type spaces, possible generalisations, asymptotic algebras, concepts of association, and applications thereof.
We develop a refined theory of microlocal analysis in the algebra ${\mathcal G}(Ω)$ of Colombeau generalized functions. In our approach, the wave front is a set of generalized points in the cotangent bundle of $Ω$, whereas in the theory developed so far, it is a set of nongeneralized points. We also show consistency between both approaches.
We consider distributions on a closed compact manifold $M$ as maps on smoothing operators. Thus spaces of certain maps between $Ψ^{-\infty}(M)\to \mathcal{C}^{\infty}(M)$ are considered as generalized functions. For any collection of regularizing processes we produce an algebra of generalized functions and a diffeomorphism equivariant embedding of distributions into this algebra. We provide examples invariant under certain group actions. The regularity for such generalized functions is provided in terms of a certain tameness of maps between graded Frechét spaces. This notion of regularity impl…
In connection with the classical Schwartz kernel theorem, we show that in the framework of Colombeau generalized functions a large class of linear mappings admit integral kernels. To do this, we need to introduce news spaces of generalized functions with slow growth and the corresponding adapted linear mappings. Finally, we show that in some sense Schwartz' result is contained in our main theorem.
Based on Colombeau's theory of algebras of generalized functions we introduce the concepts of generalized functions taking values in differentiable manifolds as well as of generalized vector bundle homomorphisms. We study their basic properties, in particular with respect to some new point value concepts for generalized functions and indicate applications of the resulting theory in general relativity.
We briefly review results on Colombeau type generalized solutions to the Cauchy problem for linear Schrödinger-type equations with non-smooth principal part and their compatibility with classical and distributional solutions. In the main part, we study convergence properties of regularized solutions to the standard Schrödinger equation with initial values corresponding to "square roots" of Dirac measures in various duals of classical subspaces of the space of continuous functions.
