Let M of real dimension 2n-1 be a compact, orientable, weakly pseudoconvex manifold of dimension at least five, embedded in C^N (n less than or equal to N), of codimension one or more in C^N, and endowed with the induced CR structure. We show the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator has closed range on such a manifold M, hence we get global existence and regularity results for the \bar\partial_b problem. We also show the middle (i.e. corresponding to (p,q) forms for q between 1 and n-2) \bar\partial_b cohomology groups of M with respect to L^2, Sobolev s, and smooth coefficients are finite and isomorphic to each other. The results are obtained by microlocalization using a new type of weight function called strongly CR plurisubharmonic.
The $k$-Cauchy-Fueter operators and complexes are quaternionic counterparts of the Cauchy-Riemann operator and the Dolbeault complex in the theory of several complex variables. To develop the function theory of several quaternionic variables, we need to solve the non-homogeneous $k$-Cauchy-Fueter equation over a domain under the compatibility condition, which naturally leads to a Neumann problem. The method of solving the $\overline{\partial}$-Neumann problem in the theory of several complex variables is applied to this Neumann problem. We introduce notions of $k$-plurisubharmonic functions an…
We prove non-subelliptic estimates for the tangential Cauchy-Riemann system over a weakly "$q$-pseudoconvex" higher codimensional submanifold $M$ of $\C^n$. Let us point out that our hypotheses do not suffice to guarantee subelliptic estimates, in general. Even more: hypoellipticity of the tangential C-R system is not in question (as shows the example by Kohn in case of a Levi-flat hypersurface). However our estimates suffice for existence of smooth solutions to the inhomogeneous C-R equations in certain degree. The main ingredients in our proofs are the weighted $L^2$ estimates by Hörmander a…
Let $X$ be a CR manifold with transversal, proper CR $G$-action. We show that $X/G$ is a complex space such that the quotient map is a CR map. Moreover the quotient is universal, i.e. every invariant CR map into a complex manifold factorises uniquely over a holomorphic map on $X/G$. We then use this result and complex geometry to proof an embedding theorem for (non-compact) strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds with transversal $G \rtimes S^1$-action. The methods of the proof are applied to obtain a projective embedding theorem for compact CR manifolds.
We prove that every compact, pseudoconvex, orientable, CR manifold of $\C^n$, bounds a complex manifold in the $C^\infty$ sense. In particular, the tangential Cauchy-Riemann system has closed range.
We solve $\square_b$ on a class of non-compact 3-dimensional strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds via a certain conformal equivalence. The idea is to make use of a related $\square_b$ operator on a compact 3-dimensional strongly pseudoconvex CR manifold, which we solve using a pseudodifferential calculus. The way we solve $\square_b$ works whenever $\overline{\partial}_b$ on the compact CR manifold has closed range in $L^2$; in particular, as in Beals and Greiner, it does not require the CR manifold to be the boundary of a strongly pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb{C}^2$. Our result provides in tu…
We are interested in $L^p$-theory for the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator in locally embeddable, $s$-concave, generic CR manifolds. We study the Dolbeault isomorphism and develop the Andreotti-Grauert theory in that setting. Using Serre duality, we solve the tangential Cauchy-Riemann equation with exact support and $L^p$-estimates.
This paper studies complex cobordisms between compact, three dimensional, strictly pseudoconvex Cauchy-Riemann manifolds. Suppose the complex cobordism is given by a complex 2-manifold X with one pseudoconvex and one pseudoconcave end. We answer the following questions. What is the relation between the embeddability of the pseudoconvex end and the embeddability of the pseudoconcave end of X? Do all CR-functions on the pseudoconvex end of X extend to holomorphic functions on the interior of X? We prove that embeddability of a strictly pseudoconvex Cauchy-Riemann 3-manifold is not a complex-cobo…
We construct the tangential $k$-Cauchy-Fueter complexes on the right quaternionic Heisenberg group, as the quaternionic counterpart of $\overline{\partial}_b$-complex on the Heisenberg group in the theory of several complex variables. We can use the $L^2$ estimate to solve the nonhomogeneous tangential $k$-Cauchy-Fueter equation under the compatibility condition over this group modulo a lattice. This solution has an important vanishing property when the group is higher dimensional. It allows us to prove the Hartogs' extension phenomenon for $k$-CF functions, which are the quaternionic counterp…
The Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ is known to be conformally equivalent to the CR sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$ minus a point. We use this fact, together with the knowledge of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator on the compact CR manifold $\mathbb{S}^3$, to solve the corresponding operator on $\mathbb{H}^1$.
A new explicit construction of Cauchy-Fantappié kernels is introduced for an arbitrary weakly pseudoconvex domain with smooth boundary. While not holomorphic in the parameter, the new kernel reflects the complex geometry and the Levi form of the boundary. Some estimates are obtained for the corresponding integral operator, which provide evidence that this kernel and related constructions give useful new tools for complex analysis on this general class of domains.
We construct a pointwise Boutet de Monvel-Sjöstrand parametrix for the Szegő kernel of a weakly pseudoconvex three dimensional CR manifold of finite type assuming the range of its tangential CR operator to be closed; thereby extending the earlier analysis of Christ. This particularly extends Fefferman's boundary asymptotics of the Bergman kernel to weakly pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^{2}$, in agreement with D'Angelo's example. Finally our results generalize a three dimensional CR embedding theorem of Lempert.
In this paper we study the commutator of Cauchy type integrals $\EuScript C$ on a bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain $D$ in $\mathbb C^n$ with boundary $bD$ satisfying the minimum regularity condition $C^{2}$ as in the recent result of Lanzani--Stein. We point out that in this setting the Cauchy type integrals $\EuScript C$ is the sum of the essential part $\EuScript C^\sharp$ which is a Calderón--Zygmund operator and a remainder $\EuScript R$ which is no longer a Calderón--Zygmund operator. We show that the commutator $[b, \EuScript C]$ is bounded on $L^p(bD)$ ($1<p<\infty$) if {\color{blac…
For a pseudoconvex domain in complex space, we prove the equivalence of the local hypoellipticity of the system (di-bar, di-bar*) with the system (di-bar_b,di-bar*_b) induced in the boundary. This develops a result of ours which used the theory of the "harmonic" extension by Kohn. This technique is inadequate for the purpose of the present paper and must be replaced by the "holomorphic" extension introduced by the authors in former work.
We give an explicit verifiable characterization of weakly pseudoconvex but locally nonconvexifiable hypersurfaces of finite type in dimension two. It is expressed in terms of a generalized model, which captures local geometry of the hypersurface both in the complex tangential and nontangential directions. As an application we obtain a new class of nonconvexifiable pseudoconvex hypersurfaces with convex models.
Let $X$ be a complex manifold and $M\subset X$ a compact, smooth, pseudoconvex CR manifold of dimension $2n-1$. (Here $n\ge 3$ or, in case $n=2$, it is made the extra assumption that $\dib_b$ has closed range on functions.) Assume that there exists a strictly CR-plurisubharmonic function in a neighborhood of $M$ in $X$. In this situation, there are here proved \begin{enumerate} \item[(i)] The global existence of $C^\infty$ solutions to the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator $\dib_b$. \item[(ii)] The global hypoellipticity of the Kohn-Laplacian $\Box_b$, under the additional condition of "weak …
We provide geometric conditions on the set of boundary points of infinite type of a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ which imply that the $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann operator is compact. These conditions are formulated in terms of certain short time flows in suitable complex tangential directions. It is noteworthy that compactness is \emph{not} established via the known potential theoretic sufficient conditions. Our results generalize to $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ the corresponding $\mathbb C^{2}$ results due to the second author.
We show that on bounded Lipschitz pseudoconvex domains that admit good weight functions the $\overline{\partial}$-Neumann operators $N_q, \overline{\partial}^* N_{q}$, and $\overline{\partial} N_{q}$ are bounded on $L^p$ spaces for some values of $p$ greater than 2.
We present new results concerning the solvability, of lack thereof, in the Cauchy problem for the debar operator, with initial values assigned on a weakly pseudoconvex hypersurface, and provide illustrative examples.
In our recent work [25] we showed that $C^\infty$ CR-diffeomorphisms of real-analytic Levi-nonflat hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^{2}$ are not analytic in general. This result raised again the question on the nature of CR-maps of real-analytic hypersurfaces. In this paper, we give a complete picture of what CR-maps actually are. First, we discover an analytic continuation phenomenon for CR-diffeomorphisms which we call the {\em sectorial analyticity property}. It appears to be the optimal regularity property for CR-diffeomorphisms in general. We emphasize that such type of extension never appeare…
Let M be a smooth, compact, orientable, weakly pseudoconvex manifold of dimension 3, embedded in C^N (N greater than or equal to 2), of codimension one or more in C^N, and endowed with the induced CR structure. Assuming that the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator \bar\partial_b has closed range in L^2 in order to rule out the Rossi example, we push regularity up to show \bar\partial_b has closed range in all Sobolev spaces s for s greater than zero. We then use the Szegö projection to show there is a smooth solution to the \bar\partial_b problem given smooth data. The results are obtained via …
We prove that the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator has closed range on Levi-pseudoconvex CR manifolds that are embedded in a q-convex complex manifold $X$. Our result generalizes the known case when $X$ is a Stein manifold.
These notes are concerned with the $L^{2}$-Sobolev theory of the complex Green operator on pseudoconvex, oriented, bounded and closed CR--submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ of hypersurface type. This class of submanifolds generalizes that of boundaries of pseudoconvex domains. We first discuss briefly the CR--geometry of general CR--submanifolds and then specialize to this class. Next, we review the basic $L^{2}$-theory of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator and the associated complex Green operator(s) on these submanifolds. After these preparations, we discuss recent results on compactness a…
We establish compactness estimates for $\bar{\partial}_{M}$ on a compact pseudoconvex CR-submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ of hypersurface type that satisfies the (analogue of the) geometric sufficient conditions for compactness of the $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann operator given by the authors earlier. These conditions are formulated in terms of certain short time flows in complex tangential directions.
We compute the spectra of the Tanaka type Laplacians on the Rumin complex, a quotient of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann complex on the unit sphere in $C^n$. We prove that Szegö map is a unitary operator from a subspace of $(p, q-1)$-forms on the sphere defined by the Tanaka operators and the normal vector field onto the space of $L^2$-harmonic $(p, q)$-forms on the unit ball. Our results generalize earlier result of Folland.
In this article, we consider metrically thin singularities A of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator on smoothly embedded Cauchy-Riemann manifolds M. The main result states removability within the space of locally integrable functions on M under the hypothesis that the (dim M-2)-dimensional Hausdorff volume of A is zero and that the CR-orbits of M and M-A are comparable.
In this paper a new explicit integral formula is derived for solutions of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann equations on CR q-concave manifolds and optimal estimates in the Lipschitz norms are obtained.
We obtain very sharp results about the lack of validity of the Poincare lemma for the tangential Cauchy Riemann equations, acting on tangential forms, tangential to a CR manifold M of general CR dimension n, and general CR codimension k. This generalizes the classical nonsolvability example of H. Lewy. We also discuss the CR structure on the characteristic bundle to M, due to certain degeneracies in the Levi form. A number of naturally geometrically occuring examples are given.
Let $U$ be a bounded open subset of the complex plane. Let $0<α<1$ and let $A_α(U)$ denote the space of functions that satisfy a Lipschitz condition with exponent $α$ on the complex plane, are analytic on $U$ and are such that for each $ε>0$, there exists $δ>0$ such that for all $z$, $w \in U$, $|f(z)-f(w)| \leq ε|z-w|^α$ whenever $|z-w| < δ$. We show that if a boundary point $x_0$ for $U$ admits a bounded point derivation for $A_α(U)$ and $U$ has an interior cone at $x_0$ then one can evaluate the bounded point derivation by taking a limit of a difference quotient over a non-tangential ray to…
Using functional analysis and a Friedrichs approximation lemma for first order differential operators, we derive a global homotopy formula in large degrees for the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator from local homotopy formulas without loss of regularity.
We prove sharp anisotropic Hölder estimates for the local solutions of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann equation in q-concave CR manifolds and we derive the same kind of estimates for global solutions when the manifold is compact.
We define a class of compact homogeneous CR manifolds which are bases of Mostow fibrations having total spaces equal to their canonical complex realizations and Hermitian fibers. This is used to establish isomorphisms between their tangential Cauchy-Riemann cohomology groups and the corresponding Dolbeault cohomology groups of the embeddings.
In this article, we consider metrically thin singularities E of the solutions of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operators on a C^{2,a}-smooth embedded Cauchy-Riemann generic manifold M (CR functions on M - E) and more generally, we consider holomorphic functions defined in wedgelike domains attached to M - E. Our main result establishes the wedge- and the L^1-removability of E under the hypothesis that the (\dim M-2)-dimensional Hausdorff volume of E is zero and that M and M\backslash E are globally minimal. As an application, we deduce that there exists a wedgelike domain attached to an everyw…
In this article, we establish a general sufficient condition for closed range of the Cauchy-Riemann operator $\bar\partial$ in appropriately weighted $L^2$ and $L^2$-Sobolev spaces on $(0,q)$-forms for a fixed $q$ on domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$. The domains we consider may be neither bounded nor pseudoconvex, and our condition is a generalization of the classical $Z(q)$ condition that we call weak $Z(q)$. We provide examples that explain the necessity of working in weighted spaces both for closed range in $L^2$ and even more critically, in $L^2$-Sobolev spaces.
The purpose of this paper is to characterize the zero sets of holomorphic functions in the Nevanlinna class on a class of convex domains of infinite type in $\mathbb{C}^2$. Moreover, we also obtain $L^p$ estimates, $1 \leq p \leq \infty$, for a particular solution of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann equation on the boundaries of these domains.
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ be a domain and $1 \leq q \leq n-1$ fixed. Our purpose in this article is to establish a general sufficient condition for the closed range of the Cauchy-Riemann operator $\bar\partial$ in appropriately weighted $L^2$-Sobolev spaces on $(0,q)$-forms. The domains we consider may be neither bounded nor pseudoconvex, and our condition is a generalization of the classical $Z(q)$ condition that we call weak $Z(q)$. We provide examples that explain the necessity of working in weighted spaces both for closed range in $L^2$ and, even more critically, in $L^2$-Sobolev spaces.
This paper provides a connection between two distinct branches of research in CR geometry -- namely, analytic and geometric conditions that suffice to establish the closed range of the Cauchy-Riemann operator and CR invariants on CR manifolds. Specifically, we work on not necessarily pseudoconvex domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ and define third and fourth order CR invariants on $\bd\Om$ and show that these invariants provide enough information to establish closed range for the $\bar\partial$-Laplacian in $L^2_{(0,q)}(Ω)$ for a given, fixed $q$. The closed range estimates follow from our previou…

Many fundamental results of pluripotential theory on the quaternionic space $\mathbb{H}^n$ are extended to the Heisenberg group. We introduce notions of a plurisubharmonic function, the quaternionic Monge-Ampère operator, differential operators $d_0$ and $d_1$ and a closed positive current on the Heisenberg group. The quaternionic Monge-Ampère operator is the coefficient of $ (d_0d_1u)^n$. We establish the Chern-Levine-Nirenberg type estimate, the existence of quaternionic Monge-Ampère measure for a continuous quaternionic plurisubharmonic function and the minimum principle for the quaternioni…
It is here proved that if a pseudoconvex CR manifold $M$ of hypersurface type has a certain "type", that we quantify by a vanishing rate $F$ at a submanifold of CR dimension $0$, then $\Box_b$ "gains $f^2$ derivatives" where $f$ is defined by inversion of $F$. Indeed the estimate is more accurate and it involves the Levi form of $M$ and of additional weights, instead of $\Box_b$. Next a general tangential estimate, "twisted" by a pseudodifferential operator $Ψ$ is established. The combination of the two yields a general "$f$-estimate" twisted by $Ψ$. We apply the twisted estimate for $Ψ$ which…
Among those transversally elliptic operators initiated by Atiyah and Singer, Kohn's $\Box_b$ operator on CR manifolds with $S^1$ action is a natural one of geometric significance for complex analysts. Our first main result establishes an asymptotic expansion for the heat kernel of such an operator with values in its Fourier components, which involves an unprecedented contribution in terms of a distance function from lower dimensional strata of the $S^1$-action. Our second main result computes a local index density, in terms of \emph{tangential} characteristic forms, on such manifolds including…
