We discuss the Bousfield localization $L_E X$ for any spectrum $E$ and any $HR$-module $X$, where $R$ is a ring with unit. Due to the splitting property of $HR$-modules, it is enough to study the localization of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectra. Using general results about stable $f$-localizations, we give a method to compute the localization of an Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum $L_E HG$ for any spectrum $E$ and any abelian group $G$. We describe $L_E HG$ explicitly when $G$ is one of the following: finitely generated abelian groups, $p$-adic integers, Prüfer groups, and subrings of the rationals. The results depend basically on the $E$-acyclicity patterns of the spectrum $H\Q$ and the spectrum $H\Z/p$ for each prime $p$.
In this paper we compute $RO(G)$-graded homotopy Mackey functors of $H\underline{\mathbb{Z}}$, the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum of the constant Mackey functor of integers for cyclic p-groups and give a complete computation for $G = C_{p^2}$ . We also discuss homological algebra of $\underline{\mathbb{Z}}$-modules for cyclic $p$-groups, and interactions between these two. The goal of this paper is to understand various slice spectral sequences as $RO(G)$-graded spectral sequences of Mackey functors.
The paper gives an answer to the question whether the Galois, separable or etale extension of an Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum in the category of ring spectra is again an Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum. We get a full answer in the Galois case. The question in separable and etale cases is answered only under additional hypothesis.
We give a homotopy theoretical characterization of generalized Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces, modeled after Segal's characterization of infinite loop spaces via Gamma spaces.
Let $Q$ denote the cyclic group of order two. Using the Tate diagram we compute the $RO(Q)$-graded coefficients of Eilenberg-MacLane $Q$-spectra and describe their structure as a module over the coefficients of the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum of the Burnside Mackey functor. If the underlying Mackey functor is a Green functor, we also infer the multiplicative structure on the $RO(Q)$-graded coefficients.
In this paper, we calculate $RO(C_2)$-graded cohomology of $C_2$-equivariant Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces $K(\underline{Z/2}, n+σ)$ for $n\geq 0$. These can be used to give the relation between equivariant lambda algebra and equivariant Adams resolution and equivariant unstable Adams spectral sequence, which are defined in author`s dissertation.
We compute ku^*(K(Z/p,2)) and ku_*(K(Z/p,2)), the connective KU-cohomology and connective KU-homology groups of the mod-p Eilenberg-MacLane space K(Z/p,2), using the Adams spectral sequence. We obtain a striking interaction between h_0-extensions and exotic extensions. The mod-p connective KU-cohomology groups, computed elsewhere, are needed in order to establish higher differentials and exotic extensions in the integral groups.
We deform the Ravenel-Wilson computation of the Morava K-homology of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces to obtain a similar description of their completed Morava E-homology. This yields both a cohomological description and an interpretation on the level of formal schemes: the scheme associated to the E-cohomology of the space K(Z/p^infty, q) is the qth exterior power of the p-divisible group associated to the versal infinitesimally deformed formal group over Lubin-Tate space.
We note that, for any natural $k$ and every natural $l$ between $k$ and $2k$, there exists a group $π$ with $\cat K(π,1)=k$ and $\TC(K(π,1))=l$. Because of this, we can set up a problem of searching of purely group-theoretical description of $\TC(K(π,1))$ as an invariant of $π$.
We set up machinery for recognizing k-cellular modules and k-cellular approximations, where k is an R-module and R is either a ring or a ring-spectrum. Using this machinery we can identify the target of the Eilenberg-Moore cohomology spectral sequence for a fibration in various cases. In this manner we get new proofs for known results concerning the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence and generalize another result.
We filter the equivariant Eilenberg Maclane spectrum $H\underline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ using the mod $p$ symmetric powers of the equivariant sphere spectrum, $\mathrm{Sp}_{\mathbb{Z}/p}^{\infty}(Σ^{\infty G}S^0)$. When $G$ is a $p$-group, we show that the layers in the filtration are the Steinberg summands of the equivariant classifying spaces of $(\mathbb{Z}/p)^n$ for $n=0, 1, 2, \ldots$. We show that the layers of the filtration split after smashing with $H\underline{\mathbb{F}}_p$. Along the way, we produced a general computation of the geometric fixed points of $H\underline{\mathbb{Z}}$ and $H\u…
Hopkins and Mahowald gave a simple description of the mod $p$ Eilenberg Mac Lane spectrum $\mathbb{F}_p$ as the free $\mathbb{E}_2$-algebra with an equivalence of $p$ and $0$. We show for each faithful $2$-dimensional representation $λ$ of a $p$-group $G$ that the $G$-equivariant Eilenberg Mac Lane spectrum $\underline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ is the free $\mathbb{E}_λ$-algebra with an equivalence of $p$ and $0$. This unifies and simplifies recent work of Behrens, Hahn, and Wilson, and extends it to include the dihedral $2$-subgroups of O(2). The main new idea is that $\underline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ has a si…
We prove that the $G$-equivariant mod $p$ Eilenberg--MacLane spectrum arises as an equivariant Thom spectrum for any finite, $p$-power cyclic group $G$, generalizing a result of Behrens and the second author in the case of the group $C_2$. We also establish a construction of $\mathrm{H}\underline{\mathbb{Z}}_{(p)}$, and prove intermediate results that may be of independent interest. Highlights include constraints on the Hurewicz images of equivariant spectra that admit norms, and an analysis of the extent to which the non-equivariant $\mathrm{H}\mathbb{F}_p$ arises as the Thom spectrum of a mo…
We prove the uniqueness of twisted K-theory in both the real and complex cases using the computation of the K-theories of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces due to Anderson and Hodgkin. As an application of our method, we give some vanishing results for actions of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces on K-theory spectra.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field, $l\neq\operatorname{char} k$ a prime number, and $X$ a quasi-projective scheme over $k$. We show that the étale homotopy type of the $d$th symmetric power of $X$ is $\mathbb Z/l$-homologically equivalent to the $d$th strict symmetric power of the étale homotopy type of $X$. We deduce that the $\mathbb Z/l$-local étale homotopy type of a motivic Eilenberg-Mac Lane space is an ordinary Eilenberg-Mac Lane space.
We study the structure of the formal groups associated to the Morava $K$-theories of integral Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces. The main result is that every formal group in the collection $\{K(n)^*K({\mathbb Z}, q), q=2,3,...\}$ for a fixed $n$ enters in it together with its Serre dual, an analogue of a principal polarization on an abelian variety. We also identify the isogeny class of each of these formal groups over an algebraically closed field. These results are obtained with the help of the Dieudonné correspondence between bicommutative Hopf algebras and Dieudonné modules. We extend P. Goerss's…
In this short note we study the topological Hoschschild homology of Eilenberg-MacLane spectra for finite cyclic groups. In particular, we show that the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum H(Z/p^k) is a Thom spectrum for any prime p (except, possibly, when p=k=2) and we also compute its topological Hoschshild homology. This yields a short proof of the results obtained by Brun, and by Pirashvili except for the anomalous case p=k=2.
The purpose of this note is to give a description of the stable homotopy group of some $2$-stage Postnikov systems for a range of dimensions. The considered $2$-stage Postnikov systems has the (weak) homotopy type of a generalized Eilenberg-Mac lane space, then their stable homotopy groups can be calculated by the stable homotopy groups of generalized Eilenberg-Mac lane spaces.
It is well known that the zeroth stable homotopy group of a genuine equivariant commutative ring spectrum has multiplicative transfers (norms), making it into a Tambara functor. We prove here that all Tambara functors can be obtained in this way. In fact, we prove that the homotopy category of Eilenberg MacLane commutative ring spectra is equivalent to the category of Tambara functors. Several algebraic results on Tambara functors are derived as corollaries. Finally, we rule out the existence of a lax symmetric monoidal construction for Eilenberg MacLane spectra when the group is nontrivial.
We prove that for a finitely generated group $G$, the second stable homotopy group $π_2^S(K(G,1))$ of the Eilenberg-Maclane space $K(G,1)$ is completely determined by the Schur multiplier $H_2(G)$. We also prove that the second stable homotopy group $π_2^S(K(G,1))$ is equal to the Schur multiplier $H_2(G)$ for a torsion group $G$ with no elements of order $2$ and show that for such groups, $π_2^S(K(G,1))$ is a direct factor of $π_{3}(SK(G,1))$, where $S$ denotes suspension and $π_2^S$ the second stable homotopy group. We compute $π_{3}(SK(G,1))$ and $π_2^S(K(G,1))$ for symmetric, alternating, …
The goal of this paper is to establish a topological version of the notion of an Eilenberg-Mac Lane space. If $X$ is a pointed topological space, $π_1(X)$ has a natural topology coming from the compact-open topology on the space of maps $S^1 \to X$. In general the construction does not produce a topological group because it is possible to create examples where the group multiplication $π_1(X) \times π_1(X) \to π_1(X)$ is discontinuous. This failure to obtain a topological group has been noticed by others, for example Fabel. However, if we work in the category of compactly generated, weakly Hau…
In this paper, we calculate the $RO(G)$-graded coefficients of $H\underline{\mathbb{Z}}$, the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum of constant Mackey functor for quaternion group $Q_8$.
We describe the slice tower and slice spectral sequence for arbitrary suspensions of the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum of an arbitrary Mackey functor for the cyclic group of prime order.
In this paper we prove over fields of characteristic zero that the zero slice of the motivic sphere spectrum is the motivic Eilenberg-Maclane spectrum. As a corollary one concludes that the slices of any spectrum are modules over the motivic Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum. To prove our result we analyze the unstable homotopy type of the symmetric powers of the T-sphere.
We prove that the $C_2$-equivariant Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum associated to the constant Mackey functor $\underline{\mathbb{F}}_2$ is equivalent to a Thom spectrum over ${Ω^ρS^{ρ+ 1}}$.
We are familiar with properties and structure of topological spaces. One of the powerful tools, which help us to figure out the structure of topological spaces is (Leray- Serre) spectral sequence. Although Eilenberg-Maclane space plays important roles in topology, and respectively geometry. Actually finding cohomology groups of this space can be useful for classifying spaces, and also homotopy groups structure of these groups. This paper discusses how to compute cohomology groups of Eilenberg-Maclane spaces $K(\mathbb{Z}, 4)$ and $K(\mathbb{Z}, 5)$ (cohomology degree less than $11$). Furthermo…
We describe the slices of positive integral suspensions of the equivariant Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum HF_2 for the constant Mackey functor over the Klein four-group $C_2\times C_2$.
We prove homological stability for both general linear groups of modules over a ring with finite stable rank and unitary groups of quadratic modules over a ring with finite unitary stable rank. In particular, we do not assume the modules and quadratic modules to be well-behaved in any sense: for example, the quadratic form may be singular. This extends results by van der Kallen and Mirzaii--van der Kallen respectively. Combining these results with the machinery introduced by Galatius--Randal-Williams to prove homological stability for moduli spaces of simply-connected manifolds of dimension 2n…
We use a "twisted group algebra" method to constructively adjoin formal radicals $\sqrt[n]α$, for $α$ a unit in a commutative ring spectrum or an invertible object in a symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category. We show that this construction is classified by maps from Eilenberg-Mac Lane objects to the unit spectrum, the Picard spectrum, and the Brauer spectrum.
The well-known theorem of Eilenberg and Ganea expresses the Lusternik - Schnirelmann category of an aspherical space as the cohomological dimension of its fundamental group. In this paper we study a similar problem of determining algebraically the topological complexity of the Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. One of our main results states that in the case when the fundamental group is hyperbolic in the sense of Gromov the topological complexity of an aspherical space $K(π, 1)$ either equals or is by one larger than the cohomological dimension of $π\times π$. We approach the problem by studying essen…
We ask whether a morphism $g$ in a triangulated category $C$ endowed with a weight structure "kills weights" (between an integer $m$ and some $n\ge m$). If $g=id_M$ (where $M\in Obj C$) and $C$ is Karoubian, then $g$ kills weights $m,\dots,n$ whenever there exists a weight decomposition of $M$ that "avoids" these weights (in the sense earlier defined by Wildeshaus). We prove the equivalence of several definitions for killing weights. In particular, we describe a family of cohomological functors that "detects" this notion. We also prove that $M$ is without weights $m,\dots, n$ (i.e., a decompos…
We prove that the universal normed motivic spectrum of characteristic 2 over a scheme on which 2 is a unit, splits into a sum of motivic Eilenberg--MacLane spectra.
We compute the topological complexity of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces associated to the group of automorphisms of a finitely generated free group which act by conjugation on a given basis, and to certain subgroups.
We prove a higher chromatic analogue of Snaith's theorem which identifies the K-theory spectrum as the localisation of the suspension spectrum of CP^\infty away from the Bott class; in this result, higher Eilenberg-MacLane spaces play the role of CP^\infty = K(Z,2). Using this, we obtain a partial computation of the part of the Picard-graded homotopy of the K(n)-local sphere indexed by powers of a spectrum which for large primes is a shift of the Gross-Hopkins dual of the sphere. Our main technical tool is a K(n)-local notion generalising complex orientation to higher Eilenberg-MacLane spaces.…
We provide and study an equivariant theory of group (co)homology of a group G with coefficients in a gamma-equivariant G-module A, when a separate group "gamma" acts on G and A, generalizing the classical Eilenberg-MacLane (co)homology of groups. Relationship with equivariant cohomology of topological spaces is established and application to algebraic K-theory is given.
