The first stable homotopy groups of motivic spheres

We compute the 1-line of stable homotopy groups of motivic spheres over fields of characteristic not two in terms of hermitian and Milnor K-groups. This is achieved by solving questions about convergence and differentials in the slice spectral sequence.

On the Orientability of the Slice Filtration

Let $X$ be a Noetherian separated scheme of finite Krull dimension. We show that the layers of the slice filtration in the motivic stable homotopy category $\stablehomotopy$ are strict modules over Voevodsky's algebraic cobordism spectrum. We also show that the zero slice of any commutative ring spectrum in $\stablehomotopy$ is an oriented ring spectrum in the sense of Morel, and that its associated formal group law is additive. Convergence of Voevodsky's slice tower

We consider Voevodsky's slice tower for a finite spectrum E in the motivic stable homotopy category over a perfect field k. In case k has finite cohomological dimension (in characteristic two, we also require that k is infinite), we show that the slice tower converges, in that the induced filtration on the bi-graded homotopy sheaves for each term in the tower for E is finite, exhaustive and separated at each stalk. This partially verifies a conjecture of Voevodsky.

Motivic slices and colored operads

Colored operads were introduced in the 1970's for the purpose of studying homotopy invariant algebraic structures on topological spaces. In this paper we introduce colored operads in motivic stable homotopy theory. Our main motivation is to uncover hitherto unknown highly structured properties of the slice filtration. The latter decomposes every motivic spectrum into its slices, which are motives, and one may ask to what extend the slice filtration preserves highly structured objects such as algebras and modules. The homotopy coniveau tower

We examine the "homotopy coniveau tower" for a general cohomology theory on smooth k-schemes and give a new proof that the layers of this tower for K-theory agree with motivic cohomology. In addition, the homotopy coniveau tower agrees with Voevodsky's slice tower for $S^1$-spectra, giving a proof of a connectedness conjecture of Voevodsky. The Generalized Slices of Hermitian K-Theory

We compute the generalized slices (as defined by Spitzweck-Østvær) of the motivic spectrum KO (representing hermitian K-theory) in terms of motivic cohomology and (a version of) generalized motivic cohomology, obtaining good agreement with the situation in classical topology and the results predicted by Markett-Schlichting. As an application, we compute the homotopy sheaves of (this version of) generalized motivic cohomology, which establishes a version of a conjecture of Morel.

On equivariant and motivic slices

Let $k$ be a field with a real embedding. We compare the motivic slice filtration of a motivic spectrum over $Spec(k)$ with the $C_2$-equivariant slice filtration of its equivariant Betti realization, giving conditions under which realization induces an equivalence between the associated slice towers. In particular, we show that, up to reindexing, the towers agree for all spectra obtained from localized quotients of $MGL$ and $MR$, and for motivic Landweber exact spectra and their realizations. Ravenel's algebraic extensions of the sphere spectrum do not exist

In this paper we prove a topological nonrealizability theorem: certain classes of graded $BP_*$-modules are shown to never occur as the $BP$-homology of a spectrum. Many of these $BP_*$-modules admit the structure of $BP_*BP$-comodules, meaning that their topological nonrealizability does not follow from earlier results like Landweber's filtration theorem. As a consequence we solve Ravenel's 1983 problem on the existence of "algebraic extensions of the sphere spectrum": algebraic extensions of the sphere spectrum do not exist, except in trivial cases.

Witt sheaves and the $η$-inverted sphere spectrum

Ananyevsky has recently computed the stable operations and cooperations of rational Witt theory. These computations enable us to show a motivic analog of Serre's finiteness result: Theorem: Let $k$ be a field. Then $π^{\mathbb{A}^1}_ n(\mathbb{S}^- _k )_*$ is torsion for $n > 0$. As an application we define a category of Witt motives over $k$ and show that rationally this category is equivalent to the minus part of $SH(k)_\mathbb{Q}$.

The slice spectral sequence for singular schemes and applications

We examine the slice spectral sequence for the cohomology of singular schemes with respect to various motivic T-spectra, especially the motivic cobordism spectrum. When the base field k admits resolution of singularities and X is a scheme of finite type over k, we show that Voevodsky's slice filtration leads to a spectral sequence for MGL(X) whose terms are the motivic cohomology groups of X defined using the cdh-hypercohomology.
