We show that the slice filtration introduced by Voevodsky is compatible in a suitable sense with the symmetric monoidal structure in the category of motivic symmetric T-spectra constructed by Jardine. It follows from this compatibility that the zero slice of the sphere spectrum s_{0}(1) is a ring spectrum and that for every symmetric T-spectrum X, and every integer n; the n-slice s_{n}(X) is a module over s_{0}(1). In particular, if the base scheme is a field of characteristic zero, we have that all the slices s_{n}(X) are big motives in the sense of Voevodsky. We also get as a corollary that the smash product of symmetric T-spectra induces pairings in the motivic Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence.
The main goal of this paper is to construct an analogue of Voevodsky's slice filtration in the motivic unstable homotopy category. The construction is done via birational invariants, this is motivated by the existence of an equivalence of categories between the orthogonal components for Voevodsky's slice filtration and the birational motivic stable homotopy categories constructed in \cite{Pelaez:2011fk}. Another advantage of this approach is that the slices appear naturally as homotopy fibres (and not as in the stable setting, where they are defined as homotopy cofibres) which behave much bett…
This paper is part of an endeavor to define an analogue of the slice filtration in the unstable motivic homotopy category. Our approach was inspired by the fact that the triangulated structures do not play a relevant role for the construction of birational homotopy categories as well as by the work of Kahn-Sujatha \cite{K-theory/0596} on birational motives, where the existence of a connection between the layers of the slice filtration and birational invariants is explicitly suggested. Our main result, shows that there is an equivalence of categories between the orthogonal components for the sl…
For every $n$-dimensional smooth projective variety $X$ over ${\bf C}$, the motive $M(X)$ is expected to admit a Chow-Künneth decomposition $M_0(X)\oplus\cdots \oplus M_{2n}(X)$. Inspired by the slice filtration of $M(X)$ we propose the definitions of $M_2(X)$ and $M_{2n-2}(X)$.
Let k be a perfect field of characteristic different from two. We show that the filtration on the Grothendieck-Witt group GW(k) induced by the slice filtration for the sphere spectrum in the motivic stable homotopy category is the I-adic filtration, where I is the augmentation ideal in GW(k).
Let $X$ be a Noetherian separated scheme of finite Krull dimension. We show that the layers of the slice filtration in the motivic stable homotopy category $\stablehomotopy$ are strict modules over Voevodsky's algebraic cobordism spectrum. We also show that the zero slice of any commutative ring spectrum in $\stablehomotopy$ is an oriented ring spectrum in the sense of Morel, and that its associated formal group law is additive. As a consequence, we get that with rational coefficients the slices are in fact motives in the sense of Cisinski-D{é}glise \cite{mixedmotives}, and have transfers if t…
Let $k$ be a field with resolution of singularities, and $X$ a separated $k$-scheme of finite type with structure map $g$. We show that the slice filtration in the motivic stable homotopy category commutes with pullback along $g$. Restricting the field further to the case of characteristic zero, we are able to compute the slices of Weibel's homotopy invariant $K$-theory extending the result of Levine, and also the zero slice of the sphere spectrum extending the result of Levine and Voevodsky. We also show that the zero slice of the sphere spectrum is a strict cofibrant ring spectrum $\mathbf{H…
Colored operads were introduced in the 1970's for the purpose of studying homotopy invariant algebraic structures on topological spaces. In this paper we introduce colored operads in motivic stable homotopy theory. Our main motivation is to uncover hitherto unknown highly structured properties of the slice filtration. The latter decomposes every motivic spectrum into its slices, which are motives, and one may ask to what extend the slice filtration preserves highly structured objects such as algebras and modules. We use colored operads to give a precise solution to this problem. Our approach m…
We study the slice filtration for S^1-spectra over a field k, and raise a number of questions regardings its properties. We show that the slices, except for the 0th slice, admit a further filtration whose layers are in a natural way the Eilenberg-Maclane spectra associated to a homotopy invariant complex of Nisnevic sheaves with transfer, i.e., an effective motive. We give an example to show that in general the 0th slice does not admit transfers.
Let $k$ be a field with a real embedding. We compare the motivic slice filtration of a motivic spectrum over $Spec(k)$ with the $C_2$-equivariant slice filtration of its equivariant Betti realization, giving conditions under which realization induces an equivalence between the associated slice towers. In particular, we show that, up to reindexing, the towers agree for all spectra obtained from localized quotients of $MGL$ and $MR$, and for motivic Landweber exact spectra and their realizations. As a consequence, we deduce that equivariant spectra obtained from localized quotients of $MR$ are e…
In this paper we prove that the intersections of the levels of the dimension filtration on Voevodsky's motivic complexes over a field $k$ with the levels of the slice one are "as small as possible", i.e., that $Obj d_{\le m}DM^{eff}_{-,R} \cap Obj DM^{eff}_{-,R} (i)=Obj d_{\le m-i} DM^{eff}_{-,R} (i)$ (for $m,i\ge 0$ and $R$ being any coefficient ring in which the exponential characteristic of $k$ invertible). This statement is applied to prove that a conjecture of J. Ayoub is equivalent to a certain orthogonality assumption. We also establish a vast generalization of our intersection result t…
We display a symmetric monoidal equivalence between the stable $\infty$-category of filtered spectra, and quasi-coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{A}^1 / \mathbb{G}_m$, the quotient in the setting of spectral algebraic geometry, of the flat affine line by the canonical action of the flat multiplicative group scheme. Via a Tannaka duality argument, we identify the underlying spectrum and associated graded functors with pull-backs of quasi-coherent sheaves along certain morphisms of stacks.
We consider Voevodsky's slice tower for a finite spectrum E in the motivic stable homotopy category over a perfect field k. In case k has finite cohomological dimension (in characteristic two, we also require that k is infinite), we show that the slice tower converges, in that the induced filtration on the bi-graded homotopy sheaves for each term in the tower for E is finite, exhaustive and separated at each stalk. This partially verifies a conjecture of Voevodsky.
Using recent development in motivic infinite loop space theory, we offer short and conceptual reproofs of some conjectures of Voevodsky's on the slice filtration using the birational geometry of Hilbert schemes. The original proofs were due to Marc Levine using very different methods, namely, the homotopy coniveau tower.
We examine the "homotopy coniveau tower" for a general cohomology theory on smooth k-schemes and give a new proof that the layers of this tower for K-theory agree with motivic cohomology. In addition, the homotopy coniveau tower agrees with Voevodsky's slice tower for $S^1$-spectra, giving a proof of a connectedness conjecture of Voevodsky. The homotopy coniveau tower construction extends to a tower of functors on the Morel-Voevodsky stable homotopy category, and we identify this $P^1$-stable homotopy coniveau tower with Voevodsky's slice filtration for $P^1$-spectra. We also show that the 0th…
We advance the understanding of K-theory of quadratic forms by computing the slices of the motivic spectra representing hermitian K-groups and Witt-groups. By an explicit computation of the slice spectral sequence for higher Witt-theory, we prove Milnor's conjecture relating Galois cohomology to quadratic forms via the filtration of the Witt ring by its fundamental ideal. In a related computation we express hermitian K-groups in terms of motivic cohomology.
We define a class of transversal slices in spaces which are quasi-Poisson for the action of a complex semisimple group G. This is a multiplicative analogue of Whittaker reduction. One example is the multiplicative universal centralizer of G, which is equipped with the usual symplectic structure in this way. We construct a smooth relative compactification by taking the closure of each centralizer fiber in the wonderful compactification of G. By realizing this partial compactification as a transversal in a larger quasi-Poisson variety, we show that it is smooth and log-symplectic.
We introduce the shifted quantum affine algebras. They map homomorphically into the quantized $K$-theoretic Coulomb branches of $3d\ {\mathcal N}=4$ SUSY quiver gauge theories. In type $A$, they are endowed with a coproduct, and they act on the equivariant $K$-theory of parabolic Laumon spaces. In type $A_1$, they are closely related to the open relativistic quantum Toda lattice of type $A$.
We study various triangulated motivic categories and introduce a vast family of aisles (these are certain classes of objects) in them. These aisles are defined in terms of the corresponding "motives" (or motivic spectra) of smooth varieties in them; we relate them to the corresponding homotopy t-structures. We describe our aisles in terms of stalks at function fields and prove that they widely generalize the ones corresponding to slice filtrations. Further, the filtrations on the "homotopy hearts" $Ht_{hom}^{eff}$ of the corresponding effective subcategories that are induced by these aisles ca…
We examine the slice spectral sequence for the cohomology of singular schemes with respect to various motivic T-spectra, especially the motivic cobordism spectrum. When the base field k admits resolution of singularities and X is a scheme of finite type over k, we show that Voevodsky's slice filtration leads to a spectral sequence for MGL(X) whose terms are the motivic cohomology groups of X defined using the cdh-hypercohomology. As a consequence, we establish an isomorphism between certain geometric parts of the motivic cobordism and motivic cohomology of X. A similar spectral sequence for th…
In this paper, we study twisted algebraic $K$-theory from a motivic viewpoint. For a smooth variety $X$ over a field of characteristic zero and an Azumaya algebra $\mathcal{A}$ over $X$, we construct the $\mathcal{A}$-twisted motivic spectral sequence, by computing the slices of the motivic twisted algebraic $K$-theory spectrum as a twisted form of motivic cohomology. This generalizes previous results due to Kahn-Levine where $\mathcal{A}$ is assumed to be pulled back from a base field. Our methods use interaction between the slice filtration and birational geometry. Along the way, we prove a …
We study the slice filtration for the K-theory of a sheaf of Azumaya algebras A, and for the motive of a Severi-Brauer variety, the latter in the case of a central simple algebra of prime degree over a field. Using the Beilinson-Lichtenbaum conjecture, we apply our results to show the vanishing of SK_2(A) for a central simple algebra A of square-free index.
This paper is dedicated to the study of the kernel of the "compact motivization" functor $M_{k}^c:SH^c(k)\to DM^c(k)$ (i.e., we try to describe those compact objects of $SH(k)$ whose associated motives vanish. Moreover, we study the question when the $m$-connectivity of $M^c_{k}(E)$ ensures the $m$-connectivity of $E$ itself (with respect to the corresponding homotopy t-structures). We prove that the kernel of $M_{k}^c$ vanishes and the corresponding "connectivity detection" statement is also valid if and only if $k$ is a non-orderable field; this is an easy consequence of the corresponding re…
If $f:S' \to S$ is a finite locally free morphism of schemes, we construct a symmetric monoidal "norm" functor $f_\otimes: \mathcal H_*(S') \to\mathcal H_*(S)$, where $\mathcal H_*(S)$ is the pointed unstable motivic homotopy category over $S$. If $f$ is finite étale, we show that it stabilizes to a functor $f_\otimes: \mathcal{SH}(S') \to \mathcal{SH}(S)$, where $\mathcal{SH}(S)$ is the $\mathbb P^1$-stable motivic homotopy category over $S$. Using these norm functors, we define the notion of a normed motivic spectrum, which is an enhancement of a motivic $E_\infty$-ring spectrum. The main co…
