This paper introduces the foundations of the polynomial algebra and basic structures for algebraic geometry over the extended tropical semiring. Our development, which includes the tropical version for the fundamental theorem of algebra, leads to the reduced polynomial semiring -- a structure that provides a basis for developing a tropical analogue to the classical theory of commutative algebra. The use of the new notion of tropical algebraic com-sets, built upon the complements of tropical algebraic sets, eventually yields the tropical algebraic Nullstellensatz.
Since a tropical Nullstellensatz fails even for tropical univariate polynomials we study a conjecture on a tropical {\it dual} Nullstellensatz for tropical polynomial systems in terms of solvability of a tropical linear system with the Cayley matrix associated to the tropical polynomial system. The conjecture on a tropical effective dual Nullstellensatz is proved for tropical univariate polynomials.
A new definition of prime congruences in additively idempotent semirings is given using twisted products. This class turns out to exhibit some analogous properties to the prime ideals of commutative rings. In order to establish a good notion of radical congruences it is shown that the intersection of all primes of a semiring can be characterized by certain twisted power formulas. A complete description of prime congruences is given in the polynomial and Laurent polynomial semirings over the tropical semifield ${\pmb T}$, the semifield $\mathbb{Z}_{max}$ and the two element semifield $\mathbb{B…
In recent years, a multiplier ideal defined on arbitrary varieties, so called Mather multiplier ideal, has been developed independently by Ein-Ishii-Mustata, and de Fernex-Docampo. With this new tool, we have a chance of extending some classical results proved in nonsingular case to arbitrary varieties to establish their general forms. In this paper, we first extend a result of geometric nullstellensatz due to Ein-Lazarsfeld in nonsingular case to any projective varieties. Then we prove a result on comparison of symbolic powers with ordinary powers on any varieties, which extends results of Ei…
We prove a version of a Nullstellensatz for partial exponential fields $(K,E)$, even though the ring of exponential polynomials $K[X_1,\ldots,X_n]^E$ is not a Hilbert ring. We show that under certain natural conditions one can embed an ideal of $K[X_1,\ldots,X_n]^E$ into an exponential ideal. In case the ideal consists of exponential polynomials with one iteration of the exponential function, we show that these conditions can be met. We apply our results to the case of ordered exponential fields.
We prove that the space of radical ideals of a ring $R$, endowed with the hull-kernel topology, is a spectral space, and that it is canonically homeomorphic to the space of the nonempty Zariski closed subspaces of Spec$(R)$, endowed with a Zariski-like topology.
We present a new effective Nullstellensatz with bounds for the degrees which depend not only on the number of variables and on the degrees of the input polynomials but also on an additional parameter called the {\it geometric degree of the system of equations}. The obtained bound is polynomial in these parameters. It is essentially optimal in the general case, and it substantially improves the existent bounds in some special cases. The proof of this result is combinatorial, and it relies on global estimations for the Hilbert function of homogeneous polynomial ideals. In this direction, we obta…
We revisit a well-known family of polynomial ideals encoding the problem of graph-$k$-colorability. Our paper describes how the inherent combinatorial structure of the ideals implies several interesting algebraic properties. Specifically, we provide lower bounds on the difficulty of computing Gröbner bases and Nullstellensatz certificates for the coloring ideals of general graphs. For chordal graphs, however, we explicitly describe a Gröbner basis for the coloring ideal, and provide a polynomial-time algorithm.
We introduce and study a special class of ideals, called tropical ideals, in the semiring of tropical polynomials, with the goal of developing a useful and solid algebraic foundation for tropical geometry. The class of tropical ideals strictly includes the tropicalizations of classical ideals, and allows us to define subschemes of tropical toric varieties, generalizing [Giansiracusa-Giansiracusa]. We investigate some of the basic structure of tropical ideals, and show that they satisfy many desirable properties that mimic the classical setup. In particular, every tropical ideal has an associat…
We present in this paper a geometric theorem which clarifies and extends in several directions work of Brownawell, Kollar and others on the effective Nullstellensatz. To begin with, we work on an arbitrary smooth complex projective variety X, with previous results corresponding to the case when X is projective space. In this setting we prove a local effective Nullstellensatz for ideal sheaves, and a corresponding global division theorem for adjoint-type bundles. We also make explicit the connection with the intersection theory of Fulton and MacPherson. Finally, constructions involving products…
We show that in the constant coefficient case the generic tropical variety of a graded ideal exists. This can be seen as the analogon to the existence of the generic initial ideal in Groebner basis theory. We determine the generic tropical variety as a set in general and as a fan for principal ideals and linear ideals.
We show that the algebraic invariants multiplicity and depth of a graded ideal in the polynomial ring are closely connected to the fan structure of its generic tropical variety in the constant coefficient case. Generically the multiplicity of the ideal is shown to correspond directly to a natural definition of multiplicity of cones of tropical varieties. Moreover, we can recover information on the depth of the ideal from the fan structure of the generic tropical variety if the depth is known to be greater than 0. In particular, in this case we can see if the ideal is Cohen-Macaulay or almost-C…
Tropical ideals, introduced in arXiv:1609.03838, define subschemes of tropical toric varieties. We prove that the top-dimensional parts of their varieties are balanced polyhedral complexes of the same dimension as the ideal. This means that every subscheme of a tropical toric variety defined by a tropical ideal has an associated class in the Chow ring of the toric variety. A key tool in the proof is that specialization of variables in a tropical ideal yields another tropical ideal; this plays the role of hyperplane sections in the theory. We also show that elimination theory (projection of var…
Tropical ideals are a class of ideals in the tropical polynomial semiring that combinatorially abstracts the possible collections of supports of all polynomials in an ideal over a field. We study zero-dimensional tropical ideals I with Boolean coefficients in which all underlying matroids are paving matroids, or equivalently, in which all polynomials of minimal support have support of size deg(I) or deg(I)+1 -- we call them paving tropical ideals. We show that paving tropical ideals of degree d+1 are in bijection with $\mathbb Z^n$-invariant d-partitions of $\mathbb Z^n$. This implies that zer…
Let $K$ be a field and $D$ be a finite-dimensional central division algebra over $K$. We prove a variant of the Nullstellensatz for $2$-sided ideals in the ring of polynomial maps $D^n \to D$. In the case where $D = K$ is commutative, our main result reduces to the $K$-Nullstellensatz of Laksov and Adkins-Gianni-Tognoli. In the case, where $K = \mathbb R$ is the field of real numbers and $D$ is the algebra of Hamilton quaternions, it reduces to the quaternionic Nullstellensatz recently proved by Alon and Paran.
We show how tropical varieties of ideals I over a field K with non-trivial valuation can be traced back to tropical varieties of ideals in R[[t]][x] over some dense subring R in its ring of integers. Moreover, for homogeneous ideals, we present algorithms on how the latter can be computed in finite time, provided that generators are polynomial in t. While doing so, we also comment on the computation of the Groebner polytope structure and p-adic Groebner bases using our framework. All algorithms solely rely on existing standard basis techniques.
Every tropical ideal in the sense of Maclagan-Rincón has an associated tropical variety, a finite polyhedral complex equipped with positive integral weights on its maximal cells. This leads to the realisability question, ubiquitous in tropical geometry, of which weighted polyhedral complexes arise in this manner. Using work of Las Vergnas on the non-existence of tensor products of matroids, we prove that there is no tropical ideal whose variety is the Bergman fan of the direct sum of the Vámos matroid and the uniform matroid of rank two on three elements, and in which all maximal cones have we…
We give an explicit upper bound for the degree of a tropical basis of a homogeneous polynomial ideal. As an application f-vectors of tropical varieties are discussed. Various examples illustrate differences between Gröbner and tropical bases.
In earlier papers it was shown that the generic tropical variety of an ideal can contain information on algebraic invariants as for example the depth in a direct way. The existence of generic tropical varieties has so far been proved in the constant coefficient case for the usual notion of genericity. In this paper we generalize this existence result to include the case of non-constant coefficients in certain settings. Moreover, we extend the notion of genericity to arbitrary closed subvarieties of the general linear group. In addition to including the concept of genericity on algebraic groups…
The aim of this paper is to give a constructive proof of one of the basic theorems of tropical geometry: given a point on a tropical variety (defined using initial ideals), there exists a Puiseux-valued ``lift'' of this point in the algebraic variety. This theorem is so fundamental because it justifies why a tropical variety (defined combinatorially using initial ideals) carries information about algebraic varieties: it is the image of an algebraic variety over the Puiseux series under the valuation map. We have implemented the ``lifting algorithm'' using Singular and Gfan if the base field ar…
I introduce the concept of integral closure for elements and ideals in idempotent semirings, and establish how it corresponds to its namesake in commutative algebra. In the case of free semirings, integral closure can be understood in terms of a certain monoid of convex bodies under Minkowski sum. I argue that integral closure therefore accounts for the difference between `tropical functions' and real functions.
We exhibit several posets arising from commutative algebra, order theory, tropical convexity as potential face posets of tropical polyhedra, and we clarify their inclusion relations. We focus on monomial tropical polyhedra, and deduce how their geometry reflects properties of monomial ideals. Their vertex-facet lattice is homotopy equivalent to a sphere and encodes the Betti numbers of an associated monomial ideal.
We find a relation between the vanishing of a globally defined residue current on $¶^n$ and solution of the membership problem with control of the polynomial degrees. Several classical results appear as special cases, such as Max Nöther's theorem, and we also obtain a generalization of that theorem. There are also connections to effective versions of the Nullstellensatz. We also provide explicit integral representations of the solutions.
We describe the ideals, especially the prime ideals, of semirings of polynomials over layered domains, and in particular over supertropical domains. Since there are so many of them, special attention is paid to the ideals arising from layered varieties, for which we prove that every prime ideal is a consequence of finitely many binomials. We also obtain layered tropical versions of the classical Principal Ideal Theorem and Hilbert Basis Theorem.
We give upper bounds for the differential Nullstellensatz in the case of ordinary systems of differential algebraic equations over any field of constants $K$ of characteristic $0$. Let $\vec{x}$ be a set of $n$ differential variables, $\vec{f}$ a finite family of differential polynomials in the ring $K\{\vec{x}\}$ and $f\in K\{\vec{x}\}$ another polynomial which vanishes at every solution of the differential equation system $\vec{f}=0$ in any differentially closed field containing $K$. Let $d:=\max\{°(\vec{f}), °(f)\}$ and $ε:=\max\{2,{\rm{ord}}(\vec{f}), {\rm{ord}}(f)\}$. We show that $f^M$ b…
Alon's combinatorial Nullstellensatz (Theorem 1.1 from \cite{Alon1}) is one of the most powerful algebraic tools in combinatorics, with a diverse array of applications. Let $\F$ be a field, $S_1,S_2,..., S_n$ be finite nonempty subsets of $\F$. Alon's theorem is a specialized, precise version of the Hilbertsche Nullstellensatz for the ideal of all polynomial functions vanishing on the set $S=S_1\times S_2\times ... \times S_n\subseteq \F^n$. From this Alon deduces a simple and amazingly widely applicable nonvanishing criterion (Theorem 1.2 in \cite{Alon1}). It provides a sufficient condition f…
We develop the algebraic polynomial theory for "supertropical algebra," as initiated earlier over the real numbers by the first author. The main innovation there was the introduction of "ghost elements," which also play the key role in our structure theory. Here, we work somewhat more generally over an ordered monoid, and develop a theory which contains the analogs of several basic theorems of classical commutative algebra. This structure enables one to develop a Zariski-type algebraic geometric approach to tropical geometry, viewing tropical varieties as sets of roots of (supertropical) polyn…
We study the relation between the integer tropical points of a cluster variety (satisfying the full Fock-Goncharov conjecture) and the totally positive part of the tropicalization of an ideal presenting the corresponding cluster algebra. Suppose we are given a presentation of the cluster algebra by a Khovanskii basis for a collection of ${\bf g}$-vector valuations associated with several seeds related by mutations. In presence of a full rank fully extended exchange matrix we construct the rays of a subfan of the totally positive part of the tropicalization of the ideal that coincides combinato…
Many hard combinatorial problems can be modeled by a system of polynomial equations. N. Alon coined the term polynomial method to describe the use of nonlinear polynomials when solving combinatorial problems. We continue the exploration of the polynomial method and show how the algorithmic theory of polynomial ideals can be used to detect k-colorability, unique Hamiltonicity, and automorphism rigidity of graphs. Our techniques are diverse and involve Nullstellensatz certificates, linear algebra over finite fields, Groebner bases, toric algebra, convex programming, and real algebraic geometry.
We derive two consequences of the multivariate fundamental theorem of algebra (MFTA). The first one is the Bezout theorem for $n$ polynomials. Notably the intersection multiplicities, as in MFTA, are characterized just by means of partial differential operators given by polynomials from $D$-invariant linear spaces. The second consequence provides a solution to the ideal membership problem, based on the above characterization of intersection multiplicities. Let us mention that one readily gets Nullstellensatz from here.
We continue the theory of $\tT$-systems from the work of the second author, describing both ground systems and module systems over a ground system (paralleling the theory of modules over an algebra). The theory, summarized categorically at the end, encapsulates general algebraic structures lacking negation but possessing a map resembling negation, such as tropical algebras, hyperfields and fuzzy rings. We see explicitly how it encompasses tropical algebraic theory and hyperfields. Prime ground systems are introduced as a way of developing geometry. The polynomial system over a prime system is …
Let $k$ be a field with a real valuation $ν$ and $R$ a $k$-algebra. We show that there exist a $k$-algebra $K$ and a real valuation $μ$ on $K$ extending $ν$ such that any real ring valuation of $R$ is induced by $μ$ via some homomorphism from $R$ to $K$; $K$ can be chosen to be a field. Then we study the case when $ν$ is trivial and $R$ a complete local Noetherian ring with the residue field $k$. Let $K$ be the ring $\bar{k}[[t^\R]]$ of Hahn series with its natural valuation $μ$; $\bar{k}$ is an algebraic closure of $k$. Despite $K$ is not universal in the strong sense defined above, it has th…
For which monomial supports do most polynomials generate a prime ideal? We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the radical of the ideal to be prime over an algebraically closed field. In characteristic zero, the same conditions give primeness. As an application we show that under the same combinatorial conditions on Newton polytopes, the stable intersection of tropical hypersurfaces is connected through codimension one.
Motivated by the problem of the existence of bounds on degrees and orders in checking primality of radical (partial) differential ideals, the nonstandard methods of van den Dries and Schmidt ["Bounds in the theory of polynomial rings over fields. A nonstandard approach.", Inventionnes Mathematicae, 76:77--91, 1984] are here extended to differential polynomial rings over differential fields. Among the standard consequences of this work are: a partial answer to the primality problem, the equivalence of this problem with several others related to the Ritt problem, and the existence of bounds for …
Given a homogeneous ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring over a field, one may record, for each degree $d$ and for each polynomial $f\in I_d$, the set of monomials in $f$ with nonzero coefficients. These data collectively form the tropicalization of $I$. Tropicalizing ideals induces a "matroid stratification" on any (multigraded) Hilbert scheme. Very little is known about the structure of these stratifications. In this paper, we explore many examples of matroid strata, including some with interesting combinatorial structure, and give a convenient way of visualizing them. We show that the matroid str…
We study the set of circuits of a homogeneous ideal and that of its truncations, and introduce the notion of generic circuits set. We show how this is a well-defined invariant that can be used, in the case of initial ideals with respect to weights, as a counterpart of the (usual) generic initial ideal with respect to monomial orders. As an application we recover the existence of the generic fan introduced by Römer and Schmitz for studying generic tropical varieties. We also consider general initial ideals with respect to weights and show, in analogy to the fact that generic initial ideals are …
We describe an algorithm which finds binomials in a given ideal $I\subset\mathbb{Q}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ and in particular decides whether binomials exist in $I$ at all. Binomials in polynomial ideals can be well hidden. For example, the lowest degree of a binomial cannot be bounded as a function of the number of indeterminates, the degree of the generators, or the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity. We approach the detection problem by reduction to the Artinian case using tropical geometry. The Artinian case is solved with algorithms from computational number theory.
In this paper we consider the Ideal Membership Problem (IMP for short), in which we are given real polynomials $f_0,f_1,\dots, f_k$ and the question is to decide whether $f_0$ belongs to the ideal generated by $f_1,\dots,f_k$. In the more stringent version the task is also to find a proof of this fact. The IMP underlies many proof systems based on polynomials such as Nullstellensatz, Polynomial Calculus, and Sum-of-Squares. In the majority of such applications the IMP involves so called combinatorial ideals that arise from a variety of discrete combinatorial problems. This restriction makes th…
