Let $M$ be a complex manifold and $S\subset M$ a (possibly singular) subvariety of $M$. Let $f\colon M\to M$ be a holomorphic map such that $f$ restricted to $S$ is the identity. We show that one can associate to $f$ a holomorphic section $X_f$ of a sheaf related to the embedding of $S$ in $M$ and that such a section reads the dynamical behavior of $f$ along $S$. In particular we prove that under generic hypotheses the canonical section $X_f$ induces a holomorphic action in the sense of Bott on the normal bundle of (the regular part of) $S$ in $M$ and this allows to obtain for holomorphic self-maps with non- isolated fixed points index theorems similar to Camacho-Sad, Baum-Bott and variation index theorems for holomorphic foliations. Finally we apply our index theorems to obtain information about topology and dynamics of holomorphic self-maps of surfaces with a compact curve of fixed points.
We describe a general construction providing index theorems localizing the Chern classes of the normal bundle of a subvariety inside a complex manifold. As particular instances of our construction we recover both Lehmann-Suwa's generalization of the classical Camacho-Sad index theorem for holomorphic foliations and our index theorem for holomorphic maps with positive dimensional fixed point set. Furthermore, we also obtain generalizations of recent index theorems of Camacho-Movasati-Sad and Camacho-Lehmann for holomorphic foliations transversal to a subvariety.
The aim of these lectures is the study of bifurcations within holomorphic families of polynomials or rational maps by mean of ergodic and pluripotential theoretic tools.
We study when there exists a dense holomorphic curve in a space of holomorphic maps from a Stein space. We first show that for any bounded convex domain $Ω\Subset\mathbb{C}^n$ and any connected complex manifold $Y$, the space $\mathcal{O}(Ω,Y)$ contains a dense holomorphic disc. Our second result states that $Y$ is an Oka manifold if and only if for any Stein space $X$ there exists a dense entire curve in every path component of $\mathcal{O}(X,Y)$. In the second half of this paper, we apply the above results to the theory of universal functions. It is proved that for any bounded convex domain …
We describe a procedure for constructing formal normal forms of holomorphic maps with a hypersurface of fixed points, and we apply it to obtain a complete list of formal normal forms for 2-dimensional holomorphic maps tangential to a curve of fixed points.
The McMullen-Sullivan holomorphic motion for topologically conjugate, complex polynomials with connected Julia set follows level sets of the Bottcher coordinate. The Buzzard-Verma holomorphic motion for hyperbolic, unstably connected, polynomial diffeomorphisms of C^2 follows level sets of the Bedford-Smillie solenoid map. It follows that this solenoid map is a conjugacy for those Henon maps that are perturbations of (one-dimensional) hyperbolic maps with connected Julia set.
We prove that a finite family of commuting holomorphic self-maps of the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^q\subset \mathbb{C}^q$ admits a simultaneous holomorphic conjugacy to a family of commuting automorphisms of a possibly lower dimensional ball, and that such conjugacy satisfies a universal property. As an application we describe when a hyperbolic and a parabolic holomorphic self-map of $\mathbb{B}^q$ can commute.
We introduce three quantities related to orbits of non-elliptic continuous semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc, the total speed, the orthogonal speed and the tangential speed and show how they are related and what can be inferred from those.
We prove that a proper holomorphic map on the unit disk in the complex plane is uniquely determined up to post-composition with a Moebius transformation by its critical points.
If f is a bijection from C^n onto a complex manifold M, which conjugates every holomorphic map in C^n to an endomorphism in M, then we prove that f is necessarily biholomorphic or antibiholomorphic. This extends a result of A. Hinkkanen to higher dimensions. As a corollary, we prove that if there is an epimorphism from the semigroup of all holomorphic endomorphisms of C^n to the semigroup of holomorphic endomorphisms in M, or an epimorphism in the opposite direction for a doubly-transitive M, then it is given by conjugation by some biholomorphic or antibiholomorphic map. We show also that ther…
We define the pull-back operator, associated to a meromorphic transform, on several types of currents. We also give a simple proof to a version of a classical theorem on the extension of currents.
We show that the tangential speed of a parabolic semigroup of holomorphic self-maps in the unit disc is asymptotically bounded from above by (1/2)logt, proving a conjecture by Bracci. In order to show the proof we need a result of "asymptotical monotonicity" of the tangential speed for proper pairs of parabolic semigroups with positive hyperbolic step.
It is shown that discrete analogs of z^c and log(z) have the same asymptotic behavior as their smooth counterparts. These discrete maps are described in terms of special solutions of discrete Painleve-II equations, asymptotics of these solutions providing the behaviour of discrete z^c and log(z) at infinity.
Let $(φ_t)$, $(ϕ_t)$ be two one-parameter semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc $\mathbb D\subset \mathbb C$. Let $f:\mathbb D \to \mathbb D$ be a homeomorphism. We prove that, if $f \circ ϕ_t=φ_t \circ f$ for all $t\geq 0$, then $f$ extends to a homeomorphism of $\bar{\mathbb D}$ outside exceptional maximal contact arcs (in particular, for elliptic semigroups, $f$ extends to a homeomorphism of $\bar{\mathbb D}$). Using this result, we study topological invariants for one-parameter semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc.
Let $f_1, ..., f_h$ be $h\ge 2$ germs of biholomorphisms of $\C^n$ fixing the origin. We investigate the shape a (formal) simultaneous linearization of the given germs can have, and we prove that if $f_1, ..., f_h$ commute and their linear parts are almost simultaneously Jordanizable then they are simultaneously formally linearizable. We next introduce a simultaneous Brjuno-type condition and prove that, in case the linear terms of the germs are diagonalizable, if the germs commutes and our Brjuno-type condition holds, then they are holomorphically simultaneously linerizable. This answers to a…
Let f be a non-invertible holomorphic endomorphism of a projective space and f^n its iterate of order n. We prove that the pull-back by f^n of a generic (in the Zariski sense) hypersurface, properly normalized, converge to the Green current associated to f when n tends to infinity. We also give an analogous result for the pull-back of positive closed (1,1)-currents.
In this work we introduce a GSV type index for varieties invariant by holomorphic Pfaff systems (possibly non locally decomposables) on projective manifolds. We prove a non-negativity property for the index. As an application, we prove that the non-negativity of the GSV-index gives us an obstruction to the solution of the Poincaré problem for Pfaff systems on projectives spaces.
We prove the existence and the essential uniqueness of canonical models for the forward (resp. backward) iteration of a holomorphic self-map $f$ of a cocompact Kobayashi hyperbolic complex manifold, such as the ball $\mathbb{B}^q$ or the polydisc $Δ^q$. This is done performing a time-dependent conjugacy of the dynamical system $(f^n)$, obtaining in this way a non-autonomous dynamical system admitting a relatively compact forward (resp. backward) orbit, and then proving the existence of a natural complex structure on a suitable quotient of the direct limit (resp. subset of the inverse limit). A…
We prove that if a positive closed current is bounded by another one with bounded, continuous or Hoelder continuous super-potentials, then it inherits the same property. There are two different methods to define wedge-products of positive closed currents of arbitrary bi-degree on compact Kaehler manifolds using super-potentials and densities. When the first method applies, we show that the second method also applies and gives the same result. As an application, we obtain a sharp upper bound for the number of isolated periodic points of holomorphic maps on compact Kaehler manifolds whose action…
We give an interpretation of the Riemann hypothesis in terms of complex and topological dynamics. For example, the Riemann hypothesis is affirmative and all zeros of the Riemann zeta function are simple if and only if a certain meromorphic function has no attracting fixed point. To obtain this, we use holomorphic index (residue fixed point index), which characterizes local properties of fixed points in complex dynamics.
We construct canonical intertwining semi-models with Kobayashi hyperbolic base space for holomorphic self-maps of complex manifolds which are univalent on some absorbing cocompact hyperbolic domain. In particular, in the unit ball we solve the Valiron equation for hyperbolic univalent self-maps and for hyperbolic semigroups.
We introduce a notion of hyperbolicity and parabolicity for a holomorphic self-map $f: Δ^N \to Δ^N$ of the polydisc which does not admit fixed points in $Δ^N$. We generalize to the polydisc two classical one-variable results: we solve the Valiron equation for a hyperbolic $f$ and the Abel equation for a parabolic nonzero-step $f$. This is done by studying the canonical Kobayashi hyperbolic semi-model of $f$ and by obtaining a normal form for the automorphisms of the polydisc. In the case of the Valiron equation we also describe the space of all solutions.
We characterise the set of fixed points of a class of holomorphic maps on complex manifolds with a prescribed homology. Our main tool is the Lefschetz number and the action of maps on the first homology group.
The purpose of this paper is to initiate a theory concerning the dynamics of asymptotically holomorphic polynomial-like maps. Our maps arise naturally as deep renormalizations of asymptotically holomorphic extensions of $C^r$ ($r>3$) unimodal maps that are infinitely renormalizable of bounded type. Here we prove a version of the Fatou-Julia-Sullivan theorem and a topological straightening theorem in this setting. In particular, these maps do not have wandering domains and their Julia sets are locally connected.
We give a new proof of the classification of normal singular surface germs admitting non-invertible holomorphic self-maps and due to J. Wahl. We then draw an analogy between the birational classification of singular holomorphic foliations on surfaces, and the dynamics of holomorphic maps. Following this analogy, we introduce the notion of minimal holomorphic model for holomorphic maps. We give sufficient conditions which ensure the uniqueness of such a model.
We characterize (in almost all cases) the holomorphic self-maps of the unit disk that intertwine two given linear fractional self-maps of the disk. The proofs are based on iteration and a careful analysis of the Denjoy-Wolff points. In particular, we characterize the maps that commute with a given linear fractional map (in the cases that are not already known) and, as an application, determine all "roots" of such maps in the sense of iteration (if any). This yields as a byproduct a short proof of a recent theorem on the embedding of a linear fractional transformation into a semigroup of holomo…
We prove that for any holomorphic map, and any bounded orbit which does not accumulate to a singular set or to an attracting cycle, its lower Lyapunov exponent is non-negative. The same result holds for unbounded orbits, for maps with a bounded singular set. Furthermore, the orbit may accumulate to infinity or to a singular set, as long as it is slow enough.
We show that if f_t is a holomorphic family of quadratic-like maps with all periodic orbits repelling so that for each real t the map f_t is a real Collet-Eckmann S-unimodal map then, writing m_t for the unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure of f_t, the map t -> \int g dm_t is real analytic for any real analytic function g.
An upper bound of the variation of argument of a holomorphic function along a curve on a Riemann surface is given. This bound is expressed through the Bernstein index of the function multiplied by a geometric constant. The Bernstein index characterizes growth of the function from a smaller domain to a larger one. The geometric constant in the estimate is explicitly given. This result is applied in \cite {GI} to the solution of the restricted version of the infinitesimal Hilbert 16th problem, namely, to upper estimates of the number of zeros of abelian integrals in complex domains.
In studying the complex Hénon maps, Mummert (in "Holomorphic shadowing for Hénon maps" Nonlinearity 21 pp. 2887-2898, 2008) defined an operator the fixed points of which give rise to bounded orbits. This enabled him to obtain an estimate of the solenoid locus. Instead of the contraction mapping theorem, in this paper we present an implicit function theorem version of his result by providing an alternative proof of a theorem of Hubbard and Oberste-Vorth (in Real and Complex Dynamical Systems, pp.89-132, 1995).
We consider complex dynamics of a critically finite holomorphic map from P^k to P^k, which has symmetries associated with the symmetric group S_{k+2} acting on P^k, for each k \ge 1. The Fatou set of each map of this family consists of attractive basins of superattracting points. Each map of this family satisfies Axiom A.
Inou and Shishikura provided a class of maps that is invariant by near-parabolic renormalization, and that has proved extremely useful in the study of the dynamics of quadratic polynomials. We provide here another construction, using more general arguments. This will allow to extend the range of applications to unicritical polynomials of all degrees.
We give a brief survey on the entropy of holomorphic self maps $f$ of compact Kähler manifolds, and rational dominating self maps $f$ of smooth projective varieties. We emphasize the connection between the entropy and the spectral radii of the induced action of $f$ on the homology of the compact manifold. The main conjecture for the rational maps states that modulo birational isomorphism all various notions of entropy and the spectral radii are equal.
Chebyshev maps in the complex plane are typical chaotic maps. Veselov generalized these map. We consider a class of those maps and view them as holomorphic endomorphisms on the 3-dimensional complex projective space and make use of the theory of complex dynamics in higher dimension. We determine Julia sets and external rays of those maps, exactly. In the Julia sets, Moebius strip and a special ruled surface appear. We also show some relation between those maps and binary quartic forms.
Following the author's previous works, we continue to consider the problem of counting the number of affine conjugacy classes of polynomials of one complex variable when its unordered collection of holomorphic fixed point indices is given. The problem was already solved completely in the case that the polynomials have no multiple fixed points, in the author's previous papers. In this paper, we consider the case of having multiple fixed points, and obtain the formulae for generic unordered collections of holomorphic fixed point indices, for each given degree and for each given number of fixed p…
We introduce the study of the local dynamics around a parabolic indifferent invariant curve for fibred holomorphic maps. As in the classical non-fibred case, we show that petals are the main ingredient. Nevertheless, one expects the properties of the base rotation number should play an important role in the arrangement of the petals. We exhibit examples where the existence and the number of petals depend not just on the complex coordinate of the map, but on the base rotation number. Furthermore, under additional hypothesis on the arithmetics and smoothness of the map, we present a theorem that…
We prove that if A is the basin of immediate attraction to a periodic attracting or parabolic point for a rational map f on the Riemann sphere, then periodic points in the boundary of A are dense in this boundary. To prove this in the non simply- connected or parabolic situations we prove a more abstract, geometric coding trees version.
In this paper we will develop a general approach which shows that generalized "critical relations" of families of locally defined holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally. The main idea is to define a transfer operator, which is a local analogue of the Thurston pullback operator, using holomorphic motions. Assuming a so-called lifting property is satisfied, we obtain information about the spectrum of this transfer operator and thus about transversality. An important new feature of our method is that it is not global: the maps we consider are only required to be defined and ho…
We prove that every finite energy $J$-holomorphic map $u(s,t):\mathbb R\times S^1 \rightarrow {\mathbb R} \times \widetilde{M}$ exponentially converges to a periodic orbit of Reeb vector field of $\widetilde M,$ as $s\to \infty.$
We consider holomorphic maps $f: U \to U$ for a hyperbolic domain $U$ in the complex plane, such that the iterates of $f$ converge to a boundary point $ζ$ of $U$. By a previous result of the authors, for such maps there exist nice absorbing domains $W \subset U$. In this paper we show that $W$ can be chosen to be simply connected, if $f$ has parabolic I type in the sense of the Baker--Pommerenke--Cowen classification of its lift by a universal covering (and $ζ$ is not an isolated boundary point of $U$). Moreover, we provide counterexamples for other types of the map $f$ and give an exact chara…
