We study when there exists a dense holomorphic curve in a space of holomorphic maps from a Stein space. We first show that for any bounded convex domain $Ω\Subset\mathbb{C}^n$ and any connected complex manifold $Y$, the space $\mathcal{O}(Ω,Y)$ contains a dense holomorphic disc. Our second result states that $Y$ is an Oka manifold if and only if for any Stein space $X$ there exists a dense entire curve in every path component of $\mathcal{O}(X,Y)$.
In the second half of this paper, we apply the above results to the theory of universal functions. It is proved that for any bounded convex domain $Ω\Subset\mathbb{C}^n$, any fixed-point-free automorphism of $Ω$ and any connected complex manifold $Y$, there exists a universal map $Ω\to Y$. We also characterize Oka manifolds by the existence of universal maps.
We show the existence of free dense subgroups, generated by 2 elements, in the holomorphic shear and overshear group of complex-Euklidean space and extend this result to the group of holomorphic automorphisms of Stein manifolds with Density Property, provided there exists a generalized translation. The conjugation operator associated to this generalized translation is hypercyclic on the topological space of holomorphic automorphisms.
We prove that for any complex manifold X, the set of all holomorphic maps from the unit disc to X whose images are everywhere dense in X forms a dense subset in the space of all holomorphic maps from the disc to X. We show by an example that this need not hold for maps from the disc to complex spaces with singularities.
In this paper we construct a properly embedded holomorphic disc in the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^2$ of $\mathbb{C}^2$ having a surprising combination of properties: on the one hand, it has finite area and hence is the zero set of a bounded holomorphic function on $\mathbb{B}^2$; on the other hand, its boundary curve is everywhere dense in the sphere $b\mathbb{B}^2$.
Let $X$ be a complex quasiprojective variety. A result of Noguchi-Winkelmann-Yamanoi shows that if $X$ admits a Zariski dense entire curve, then its quasi-Albanese map is a fiber space. We show that the orbifold structure induced by a properly birationally equivalent map on the base is special in this case. As a consequence, if $X$ is of log-general type with $\bar q(X)\geq\dim X$, then any entire curve is contained in a proper subvariety in $X$.
We prove that a finite family of commuting holomorphic self-maps of the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^q\subset \mathbb{C}^q$ admits a simultaneous holomorphic conjugacy to a family of commuting automorphisms of a possibly lower dimensional ball, and that such conjugacy satisfies a universal property. As an application we describe when a hyperbolic and a parabolic holomorphic self-map of $\mathbb{B}^q$ can commute.
This work deals with the topological classification of singular foliation germs on $(\mathbb C^{2},0)$. Working in a suitable class of foliations we fix the topological invariants given by the separatrix set, the Camacho-Sad indices and the projective holonomy representations and we prove the existence of a topological universal deformation through which every equisingular deformation uniquely factorizes up to topological conjugacy. This is done by representing the functor of topological classes of equisingular deformations of a fixed foliation. We also describe the functorial dependence of th…
We establish a defect relation of holomorphic curves from a general open Riemann surface into a normal complex projective variety, with Zariski-dense image intersecting effective Cartier divisors.
We deal with the distributions of holomorphic curves and integral points off divisors. We will simultaneouly prove an optimal dimension estimate from above of a subvariety W off a divisor D which contains a Zariski dense entire holomorphic curve, or a Zariski dense D-integral point set, provided that in the latter case everything is defined over a number field. Then, if the number of components of D is large, the estimate leads to the constancy of such a holomorphic curve or the finiteness of such an integral point set. At the begining, we extend logarithmic Bloch-Ochiai's Theorem to the Kaehl…
In this paper, the linear structure of the family $H_e(G)$ of holomorphic functions in a domain $G$ of the complex plane that are not analytically continuable beyond the boundary of $G$ is analyzed. We prove that $H_e(G)$ contains, except for zero, a dense algebra; and, under appropriate conditions, the subfamily of $H_e(G)$ consisting of boundary-regular functions contains dense vector spaces with maximal dimension, as well as infinite dimensional closed vector spaces and large algebras. The case in which $G$ is a domain of existence in a complex Banach space is also considered. The results o…
We prove that the canonical bundle of any holomorphic family of compact complex algebraic manifolds carries a singular Hermitian metric having non-negative curvature current and such that every holomorphic section of the canonical bundle of the central fiber is L^2 with respect to this metric. This result was proved by Siu when the members of the family are general type, and used to establish the deformation invariance of plurigenera in that case. In fact, we prove our result in a more general setting of a smooth hypersurface with not-necessarily normal trivial bundle in a manifold that is Ste…
We prove that the space of dominant/non-constant holomorphic mappings from a product of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces of finite type into certain hyperbolic manifolds with universal cover a bounded domain is a finite set.
Let be F a family of curves in the unit disc. We show that the set of all functions f holomorphic on the unit disc, which satisfy the following condition, is G-delta and dense in the space of all functions holomorphic on the unit disc: For each compact set K with connected complement, each function g continuous on K and holomorphic on its interior, every point t on the unit circle, every curve C in F (ending in t) and any e>0 there exist numbers 0<a<1 and b in C such that |f(az+b)-g(z)|<e for all z in K and |b-t|<e. The set of these functions is called the class of T-universal functions with p…
Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of dimension $n\geq 2$ satisfying the volume density property with respect to an exact holomorphic volume form. For example, $X$ could be $\mathbb{C}^n$, any connected linear algebraic group that is not reductive, the Koras-Russell cubic, or a product $Y\times\mathbb{C}$, where $Y$ is any Stein manifold with the volume density property. We prove that chaotic automorphisms are generic among volume-preserving holomorphic automorphisms of $X$. In particular, $X$ has a chaotic holomorphic automorphism. A proof for $X=\mathbb{C}^n$ may be found in work of Fornæss and Sib…
A new proof of the Second Main Theorem with truncation level 1 for Zariski-dense holomorphic curves into Abelian varieties, which has just been proved by Yamanoi [Y2], is presented. Our proof is based on the idea of the "Radon transform" introduced in [K2] combined with consideration on certain singular perturbation of the probability measures on the parameter space which appears in the "Radon transform".
Given a domain of holomorphy $D$ in $\mathbb{C}^N$, $N\geq 2$, we show that the set of holomorphic functions in $D$ whose cluster sets along any finite length paths to the boundary of $D$ is maximal, is residual, densely lineable and spaceable in the space $\mathcal{O}(D)$ of holomorphic functions in $D$. Besides, if $D$ is a strictly pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb{C}^N$, and if a suitable family of smooth curves $γ(x,r)$, $x\in bD$, $r\in [0,1)$, ending at a point of $bD$ is given, then we exhibit a spaceable, densely lineable and residual subset of $\mathcal{O}(D)$, every element $f$ of whi…
We prove closing lemmas for automorphisms of a Stein manifold with the density property and for endomorphisms of an Oka-Stein manifold. In the former case we need to impose a new tameness condition. It follows that hyperbolic periodic points are dense in the tame non-wandering set of a generic automorphism of a Stein manifold with the density property and in the non-wandering set of a generic endomorphism of an Oka-Stein manifold. These are the first results about holomorphic dynamics on Oka manifolds. We strengthen previous results of ours on the existence and genericity of chaotic volume-pre…
We prove a very general Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence on arbitrary compact Hermitian manifolds. This correspondence refers to moduli spaces of "universal holomorphic oriented pairs". Most of the classical moduli problems in complex geometry (e. g. holomorphic bundles with reductive structure groups, holomorphic pairs, holomorphic Higgs pairs, Witten triples, arbitrary quiver moduli problems) are special cases of this universal classification problem. Our Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence relates the complex geometric concept "polystable oriented holomorphic pair" to the existence of a reduct…
We show, using the Kobayashi and Caratheodory metrics on special holomorphic disks in the universal Teichmuller space, that a wide class of holomorphic functionals on the space of univalent functions in the disk is maximized by the Koebe function or by its root transforms; their extremality is forced by hyperbolic features. As consequences, this implies the proofs of the famous Zalcman and Bieberbach conjectures.
In this paper, we generalize the Kobayashi pseudo-distance to complex manifolds which admit holomorphic bracket generating distributions. The generalization is based on Chow's theorem in sub-Riemannian geometry. Let G be a linear semisimple Lie group. For a complex $G$-homogeneous manifold M with a G-invariant holomorphic bracket generating distribution D, we prove that (M,D) is Kobayashi hyperbolic if and only if the universal covering of M is a canonical flag domain and the induced distribution is the superhorizontal distribution.
Let $G$ and $Ω$ be two planar domains. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on a sequence $(ϕ_n)$ of eventually injective holomorphic mappings from $G$ to $Ω$ for the existence of a function $f\in H(Ω)$ whose orbit under the composition by $(ϕ_n)$ is dense in $H(G)$. This extends a result of the same nature obtained by Grosse-Erdmann and Mortini when $G=Ω$. An interconnexion between the topological properties of $G$ and $Ω$ appears. Further, in order to exhibit in a natural way holomorphic functions with wild boundary behaviour on planar domains, we study a certain type of universality …
In this paper, we establish a structure theorem for a smooth projective variety $X$ with semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature. Our structure theorem contains the solution for Yau's conjecture and it can be regarded as a natural generalization of the structure theorem proved by Howard-Smyth-Wu and Mok for holomorphic bisectional curvature. Specifically, we prove that $X$ admits a locally trivial morphism $ϕ:X \to Y$ such that the fiber $F$ is rationally connected and the image $Y$ has a finite étale cover $A \to Y$ by an abelian variety $A$, by combining the author's previous work with…
In this paper we construct a complete injective holomorphic immersion $\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}^2$ whose image is dense in $\mathbb{C}^2$. The analogous result is obtained for any closed complex submanifold $X\subset \mathbb{C}^n$ for $n>1$ in place of $\mathbb{C}\subset\mathbb{C}^2$. We also show that, if $X$ intersects the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$ of $\mathbb{C}^n$ and $K$ is a connected compact subset of $X\cap\mathbb{B}^n$, then there is a Runge domain $Ω\subset X$ containing $K$ which admits a complete holomorphic embedding $Ω\to\mathbb{B}^n$ whose image is dense in $\mathbb{B}^n$.
Given a sequence = (r n) n $\in$ [0, 1) tending to 1, we consider the set U A (D,) of Abel universal series consisting of holomorphic functions f in the open unit disc D such that for any compact set K included in the unit circle T, different from T, the set {z $\rightarrow$ f (r n $\bullet$)| K : n $\in$ N} is dense in the space C(K) of continuous functions on K. It is known that the set U A (D,) is residual in H(D). We prove that it does not coincide with any other classical sets of universal holomorphic functions. In particular, it not even comparable in terms of inclusion to the set of hol…
We study the backward invariant set of one-parameter semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc. Such a set is foliated in maximal invariant curves and its open connected components are petals, which are, in fact, images of Poggi-Corradini's type pre-models. Hyperbolic petals are in one-to-one correspondence with repelling fixed points, while only parabolic semigroups can have parabolic petals. Petals have locally connected boundaries and, except a very particular case, they are indeed Jordan domains. The boundary of a petal contains the Denjoy-Wolff point and, except such a fixed po…
Let $X$ be a Banach holomorphic function space on the unit disk. A linear polynomial approximation scheme for $X$ is a sequence of bounded linear operators $T_n:X\to X$ with the property that, for each $f\in X$, the functions $T_n(f)$ are polynomials converging to $f$ in the norm of the space. We completely characterize those spaces $X$ that admit a linear polynomial approximation scheme. In particular, we show that it is NOT sufficient merely that polynomials be dense in $X$.
We prove simultaneous Universal Approximation of a certain type of Pade Approximants and of Taylor series with the same indexes. This is a generic phenomenon in the space of holomorphic functions in any simply connected domain, as well as in several other spaces. Our results are valid for one center of expansion and for several centers, as well.
Let $D$ be the open unit disc in the complex plane. We denote by $\mathbb{C}$ the set of complex numbers and consider any compact set $K$ which is disjoint from $D$ and which also has connected complement. Let $A(K)$ denote all the functions $f:K\to \mathbb{C} $ such that $f$ is continuous on $K$ and holomorphic in $K^o$. It is well known that there exist holomorphic functions $f$ on $D$ for which the partial sums $S_n(f)$, n=1,2,... of the Taylor series with center $0$ are dense in $A(K)$ for every $K$ satisfying the properties above. It is also known that the above result fails if we conside…
We prove simultaneous universal Padé approximation for several universal Padé approximants of several types. Our results are generic in the space of holomorphic functions, in the space of formal power series as well as in a subspace of $A^{\infty}$. These results are valid for one center of expansion or for several centers as well.
We overview a number of precise notions for a holomorphic automorphism group to be big together with their implications, in particular we give an exposition of the notions of flexibility and of density property. These studies have their origin in the famous result of Andersén and Lempert from 1992 proving that the overshears generate a dense subgroup in the holomorphic automorphism group of $\C^n, n\ge 2$. There are many applications to natural geometric questions in complex geometry, several of which we mention here. Also the Linearization Problem, well known since the 1950 s and considered b…
We show that each pseudoconvex domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb C}^n$ admits a holomorphic map $F$ to ${\mathbb C}^m$ with $|F|\le C_1 e^{C_2 \hatδ^{-6}}$, where $\hatδ$ is the minimum of the boundary distance and $(1+|z|^2)^{-1/2}$, such that every boundary point is a Casorati-Weierstrass point of $F$. Based on this fact, we introduce a new anti-hyperbolic concept --- universal dominability. We also show that for each $α>6$ and each pseudoconvex domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb C}^n$, there is a holomorphic function $f$ on $Ω$ with $|f|\le C_αe^{C_α' \hatδ^{-α}}$, such that every boundary point is a Picard…
A holomorphic function f on a simply connected domain $Ω$ belongs to a subclass of universal Taylor series if prescribed and infinite number of partial sums of the Taylor expansion of f around a given center $ζ_0$ realize Mergalyan-type approximations outside $Ω$. We will prove that this class is independent of the choice of center if the indices of the partial sums do not grow very fast to infinity.
We prove Runge-type theorems and universality results for locally univalent holomorphic and meromorphic functions. Refining a result of M. Heins, we also show that there is a universal bounded locally univalent function on the unit disk. These results are used to prove that on any hyperbolic simply connected plane domain there exist universal conformal metrics with prescribed constant curvature.
A Mall bundle on a Hopf manifold H is a holomorphic vector bundle whose pullback to the universal cover of H is trivial. We define resonant and non-resonant Mall bundles, generalizing the notion of the resonance in ODE, and prove that a non-resonant Mall bundle always admits a flat holomorphic connection. We use this observation to prove a version of Poincare-Dulac linearization theorem, showing that any non-resonant invertible holomorphic contraction of a complex space is linear in appropriate holomorphic coordinates. We define the notion of resonance in Hopf manifolds, and show that all non-…
A holomorphic function f on a simply connected domain Ω is said to possess a universal Taylor series about a point in Ω if the partial sums of that series approximate arbitrary polynomials on arbitrary compacta K outside Ω (provided only that K has connected complement). This paper shows that this property is not conformally invariant, and, in the case where Ω is the unit disc, that such functions have extreme angular boundary behaviour.
In this paper we construct for every integer $n>1$ a complex manifold of dimension $n$ which is exhausted by an increasing sequence of biholomorphic images of $\mathbb C^n$ (i.e., a long $\mathbb C^n$), but it does not admit any nonconstant holomorphic or plurisubharmonic functions. Furthermore, we introduce new biholomorphic invariants of a complex manifold $X$, the stable core and the strongly stable core, that are based on the long term behavior of hulls of compact sets with respect to an exhaustion of $X$. We show that every compact polynomially convex set $B\subset \mathbb C^n$ which is t…
We consider the spaces $H_{F}^{\infty}(Ω)$ and $\mathcal{A}_{F}(Ω)$ containing all holomorphic functions $f$ on an open set $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{C}$, such that all derivatives $f^{(l)}$, $l\in F \subseteq \mathbb{N}_0=\{ 0,1,...\}$, are bounded on $Ω$, or continuously extendable on $\overlineΩ$, respectively. We endow these spaces with their natural topologies and they become Fréchet spaces. We prove that the set $S$ of non-extendable functions in each of these spaces is either void, or dense and $G_δ$. We give examples where $S=\varnothing$ or not. Furthermore, we examine cases where $F$ can b…
Let $H^\infty(\mathbb D\times\N)$ be the Banach algebra of bounded holomorphic functions defined on the disjoint union of countably many copies of the open unit disk $\mathbb D\subset\mathbb C$. We show that the dense stable rank of $H^\infty(\mathbb D\times\N)$ is one and using this fact prove some nonlinear Runge-type approximation theorems for $H^\infty(\mathbb D\times\N)$ maps. Then we apply these results to obtain a priori uniform estimates of norms of approximating maps in similar approximation problems for algebra $H^\infty(\mathbb D)$.
We prove the existence of holomorphic functions $f$ defined on any open convex subset ${\rm Ω}\subset {\mathbb C}^n$, whose partial sums of the Taylor developments approximate uniformly any complex polynomial on any convex compact set disjoint from $\bar{\rm Ω}$ and on denumerably many convex compact sets in ${\mathbb C}^n\backslash {\rm Ω}$ which may meet the boundary $\partial {\rm Ω}$. If the universal approximation is only required on convex compact sets disjoint from $\bar{\rm Ω}$, then $f$ may be chosen to be smooth on $\partial {\rm Ω}$, that is $f\in A^{\infty}({\rm Ω})$. Those are gen…
A consequence of the results of Bers and Griffiths on the uniformization of complex algebraic varieties is that the universal cover of a family of Riemann surfaces, with base and fibers of finite hyperbolic type, is a contractible 2-dimensional domain that can be realized as the graph of a holomorphic motion of the unit disk. In this paper we determine which holomorphic motions give rise to these uniformizing domains and characterize which among them correspond to arithmetic families (i.e. families defined over number fields). Then we apply these results to characterize the arithmeticity of co…
Let $Ω$ be a complex manifold, and let $X\subset Ω$ be an open submanifold whose closure $\bar X$ is a (not necessarily compact) submanifold with smooth boundary. Let $G$ be a complex Lie group, $Π$ be a differentiable principal $G$-bundle on $Ω$ and $J$ a formally integrable bundle almost complex structure on the restriction $\bar P:= Π|_{\bar X}$. We prove that, if the boundary of $\bar X$ is strictly pseudoconvex, $J$ extends to a holomorphic structure on the restriction of $Π$ to a neighborhood of $\bar X$ in $Ω$. This answers positively and generalizes a problem stated in the article "Bou…
Let $M$ be a complete Kähler manifold with nonnegative bisectional curvature. Suppose the universal cover does not split and $M$ admits a nonconstant holomorphic function with polynomial growth, we prove $M$ must be of maximal volume growth. This confirms a conjecture of Ni. There are two essential ingredients in the proof: The Cheeger-Colding theory on Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of manifolds; the three circle theorem for holomorphic functions.
