Using an idea due to R.Thomason, we define a "homology theory" on the category of rings which satisfies excision, exactness, homotopy (in the algebraic sense) and periodicity of order 4. For regular noetherian rings, we find P. Balmer's higher Witt groups. For more general rings, this homology isomorphic to the KT-theory of J. Hornbostel, inspired by the work of B. Williams. For real or complex C*-algebras, we recover - up to 2 torsion - topological K-theory.
This paper investigates the Witt groups of triangulated categories of sheaves (of modules over a ring R in which 2 is invertible) equipped with Poincare-Verdier duality. We consider two main cases, that of perfect complexes of sheaves on locally compact Hausdorff spaces and that of cohomologically constructible complexes of sheaves on polyhedra. We show that the Witt groups of the latter form a generalised homology theory for polyhedra and continuous maps. Under certain restrictions on the ring R, we identify the constructible Witt groups of a finite simplicial complex with Ranicki's free symm…
Let F be a field of characteristic zero and let f(t,n) be the stabilization homomorphism from the n-th integral homology of SL(t,F) to the n-th homology of SL(t+1,F). We prove the following results: For all n, f(t,n) is an isomorphism if t is at least n+1, and is surjective for t=n, confirming a conjecture of C-H. Sah. Furthermore if n is odd, then f(n,n) is an isomorphism and when n is even the kernel of f(n,n) is the (n+1)st power of the fundamental ideal of the Witt Ring of the field.. If n is even, then the cokernel of f(n-1,n) is naturally isomorphic to the n-th Milnor-Witt K-group of F, …
Let $V$ be an algebraic variety defined over $\mathbb R$, and $V_{top}$ the space of its complex points. We compare the algebraic Witt group $W(V)$ of symmetric bilinear forms on vector bundles over $V$, with the topological Witt group $WR(V_{top})$ of symmetric forms on Real vector bundles over $V_{top}$ in the sense of Atiyah, especially when $V$ is 2-dimensional. To do so, we develop topological tools to calculate $WR(V_{top})$, and to measure the difference between $W(V)$ and $WR(V_{top})$.
We show that the Grothendieck-Witt and Witt groups of smooth complex cellular varieties can be identified with their topological KO-groups. As an application, we deduce the values of the Witt groups of all irreducible hermitian symmetric spaces, including smooth complex quadrics, spinor varieties and symplectic Grassmannians.

In this paper we extend and apply the work of Paul Balmer and others on derived and triangular Witt Groups. We obtain a generalized form of dévissage for derived Witt Groups over Cohen-Macaulay rings.
In arxiv:1602.04254, we have defined polynomial Witt vectors functor from vector spaces over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$ to abelian groups. In this paper, we use polynomial Witt vectors to construct a functorial Hochschild-Witt complex $WCH_*(A)$ for any associative unital $k$-algebra $A$, with homology groups $WHH_*(A)$. We prove that the group $WHH_0(A)$ coincides with the group of non-commutative Witt vectors defined by Hesselholt, while if $A$ is commutative, finitely generated, and smooth, the groups $WHH_i(A)$ are naturally identified with the terms $WΩ^i_A$ of the…
We introduce Milnor-Witt $K$-groups of local rings and show that the $n$th Milnor-Witt $K$-group of a local ring $R$ which contains an infinite field of characteristic not $2$ is the pull-back of the $n$th power of the fundamental ideal in the Witt ring of $R$ and the $n$th Milnor $K$-group of $R$ over the $n$th Milnor $K$-group of $R$ modulo $2$. This generalizes the work of Morel-Hopkins on Milnor-Witt $K$-groups of fields.
We study Witt groups of smooth curves and surfaces over algebraically closed fields of characteristic not two. In both dimensions, we determine both the classical Witt group and Balmer's shifted Witt groups. In the case of curves, the results are supplemented with a complete description of the (shifted) Grothendieck-Witt groups. In a second step, we analyse the relationship of Witt groups of smooth complex curves and surfaces with their real topological K-groups. They turn out to be surprisingly close: for all curves and for all projective surfaces of geometric genus zero, the Witt groups may …
In this paper we study the Witt groups of symmetric and anti-symmetric forms on perverse sheaves on a finite-dimensional topologically stratified space with even dimensional strata. We show that the Witt group has a canonical decomposition as a direct sum of the Witt groups of shifted local systems on strata. We compare this with another `splitting decomposition' for Witt classes of perverse sheaves obtained inductively from our main new tool, a `splitting relation' which is a generalisation of isotropic reduction. The Witt groups we study are identified with the (non-trivial) Balmer-Witt grou…
We compute the Chow-Witt rings of the classifying spaces for the symplectic and special linear groups. In the structural description we give, contributions from real and complex realization are clearly visible. In particular, the computation of cohomology with $\mathbf{I}^j$-coefficients is done closely along the lines of Brown's computation of integral cohomology for special orthogonal groups. The computations for the symplectic groups show that Chow-Witt groups are a symplectically oriented ring cohomology theory. Using our computations for special linear groups, we also discuss the question…
We prove that the hermitian Gersten-Witt complex is exact for Azumaya algebras with involution of the first- or second kind over a regular local ring, which is essentially smooth over a field, or over a discrete valuation ring.
Calmès and Fasel have shown that the twisted Witt groups of split flag varieties vanish in a large number of cases. For flag varieties over algebraically closed fields, we sharpen their result to an if-and-only-if statement. In particular, we show that the twisted Witt groups vanish in many previously unknown cases. In the non-zero cases, we find that the twisted total Witt group forms a free module of rank one over the untwisted total Witt group, up to a difference in grading. Our proof relies on an identification of the Witt groups of flag varieties with the Tate cohomology groups of their K…
We study the algebraic $K$-theory and Grothendieck-Witt theory of proto-exact categories, with a particular focus on classes of examples of $\mathbb{F}_1$-linear nature. Our main results are analogues of theorems of Quillen and Schlichting, relating the $K$-theory or Grothendieck-Witt theories of proto-exact categories defined using the (hermitian) $Q$-construction and group completion.
We introduce a general framework to unify several variants of twisted topological $K$-theory. We focus on the role of finite dimensional real simple algebras with a product-preserving involution, showing that Grothendieck-Witt groups provide interesting examples of twisted $K$-theory. These groups are linked with the classification of algebraic vector bundles on real algebraic varieties.
We show that the higher Grothendieck-Witt groups, a.k.a. algebraic hermitian K-groups, are represented by an infinite orthogonal Grassmannian in the A1-homotopy category of smooth schemes over a regular base for which 2 is a unit in the ring of regular functions. We also give geometric models for various P1- and S1-loop spaces of hermitian K-theory.
In these lectures, we provide a toolkit to work with Chow-Witt groups, and more generally with the homology and cohomology of the Rost-Schmid complex associated to Milnor-Witt $K$-theory.
We explain how to work with total Witt groups, more specifically, how to circumvent the classical embarrassment of making choices for line bundles up to isomorphisms and up to squares.
We prove localization and Zariski-Mayer-Vietoris for higher Grothendieck-Witt groups, alias hermitian $K$-groups, of schemes admitting an ample family of line-bundles. No assumption on the characteristic is needed, and our schemes can be singular. Along the way, we prove additivity, fibration and approximation theorems for the hermitian $K$-theory of exact categories with weak equivalences and duality.
We develop the Witt group for certain braided monoidal categories with duality. In case of a braided fusion category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, we explicitly describe this structure. We then use this description to prove that this tool provides an invariant for finite isocategorical groups. As an application, we show that all groups of order less than 64 are categorically rigid.
We give a geometric setup in which the connecting homomorphism in the localization long exact sequence for Witt groups decomposes as the pull-back to the exceptional fiber of a suitable blow-up followed by a push-forward.
Let k be a perfect field of characteristic different from two. We show that the filtration on the Grothendieck-Witt group GW(k) induced by the slice filtration for the sphere spectrum in the motivic stable homotopy category is the I-adic filtration, where I is the augmentation ideal in GW(k).
We define push-forwards for Witt groups of schemes along proper morphisms, using Grothendieck duality theory. This article is an application of results of the authors on tensor-triangulated closed categories to such structures on some derived categories of schemes together with classical derived functors.
We compute the total Witt groups of (split) Grassmann varieties, over any regular base X. The answer is a free module over the total Witt ring of X. We provide an explicit basis for this free module, which is indexed by a special class of Young diagrams, that we call even Young diagrams.
We reconstruct derived Witt groups via special linear algebraic cobordism. There is a morphism of ring cohomology theories which sends the canonical Thom class in special linear cobordism to the Thom class in the derived Witt groups. We show that for every smooth variety X this morphism induces an isomorphism between MSL^{*,*}(X)[h^{-1}] with the "extended" coefficient ring MSL^{4*,2*}(pt) -> W^{2*}(pt) and Laurent polynomial ring over the derived Witt groups W^*(X), where h is the stable Hopf map. This result is an analogue of the result by Panin and Walter reconstructing hermitian K-theory u…
We show that Witt groups of spinor varieties (aka.\ maximal isotropic Grassmannians) can be presented by combinatorial objects called even shifted young diagram. Our method relies on the Blow-up setup of Balmer-Calmès, and we investigate the connecting homomorphism of the localization sequence via the projective bundle formula of Walter-Nenashev, the projection formula of Calmès-Hornbostel and the excess intersection formula of Fasel.
We prove some results connecting the zeta functions of varieties over finite fields with the big Witt ring over $\mathbb Z$. We explore relations with motivic measures and a classical formula of Macdonald on invariants of symmetric products of a variety.
Let $R$ be a commutative local ring. We provide an explicit presentation of the symmetric Grothendieck-Witt ring $\mathrm{GW}^{\mathrm{s}}(R)$ of $R$ as an abelian group when $R$ has residue field $\mathbb{F}_2$. This completes a recent work by Rogers and Schlichting, where an explicit presentation of $\mathrm{GW}^{\mathrm{s}}(R)$ is given when the residue field is different from $\mathbb{F}_2$. We then use this result to compute the symmetric Grothendieck-Witt rings for the sequences of local rings $\mathbb{Z}/2^n\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{F}_2[x]/(x^n)$.
We construct a Grothendieck-Witt space for any stable infinity category with duality. If we apply our construction to perfect complexes over a commutative ring in which 2 is invertible we recover the classical Grothendieck-Witt space. Our Grothendieck-Witt space is a grouplike E-infinity space which is part of a genuine C_2-spectrum, the connective real K-theory spectrum.
Let G be a split semi-simple linear algebraic group over a field, let P be a parabolic subgroup and let L be a line bundle on the projective homogeneous variety G/P. We give a simple condition on the class of L in Pic(G/P)/2 in terms of Dynkin diagrams implying that the Witt groups W^i(G/P,L) are zero for all integers i. In particular, if B is a Borel subgroup, then W^i(G/B,L) is zero unless L is trivial in Pic(G/B)/2.
We describe the mod $p^r$ pro $K$-groups $\{K_n(A/I^s)/p^r\}_s$ of a regular local $\mathbb F_p$-algebra $A$ modulo powers of a suitable ideal $I$, in terms of logarithmic Hodge-Witt groups, by proving pro analogues of the theorems of Geisser-Levine and Bloch-Kato-Gabber. This is achieved by combining the pro Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg theorem in topological cyclic homology with the development of the theory of de Rham-Witt complexes and logarithmic Hodge-Witt sheaves on formal schemes in characteristic $p$. Applications include the following: the infinitesimal part of the weak Lefschetz con…
We establish a link between free probability theory and Witt vectors, via the theory of formal groups. We derive an exponential isomorphism which expresses Voiculescu's free multiplicative convolution $\boxtimes$ as a function of the free additive convolution $\boxplus$. Subsequently we continue our previous discussion of the relation between complex cobordism and free probability. We show that the generic $n$th free cumulant corresponds to the cobordism class of the $(n-1)$-dimensional complex projective space. This permits us to relate several probability distributions from random matrix the…
