We compute the total Witt groups of (split) Grassmann varieties, over any regular base X. The answer is a free module over the total Witt ring of X. We provide an explicit basis for this free module, which is indexed by a special class of Young diagrams, that we call even Young diagrams.
We provide several ingredients towards a generalization of the Littlewood-Richardson rule from Chow groups to algebraic cobordism. In particular, we prove a simple product-formula for multiplying classes of smooth Schubert varieties with any Bott-Samelson class in algebraic cobordism of the grassmannian. We also establish some results for generalized Schubert polynomials for hyperbolic formal group laws.
We formulate and prove a generalization of Zariski-van Kampen theorem on the topological fundamental groups of smooth complex algebraic varieties. As an application, we prove a hyperplane section theorem of Lefschetz-Zariski-van Kampen type for the fundamental groups of the complements to the Grassmannian dual varieties.
By using vector field techniques, we compute the ordinary and equivariant cohomology rings of Hilbert scheme of points in the projective plane in relation with that of a Grassmann variety.
We show that Witt groups of spinor varieties (aka.\ maximal isotropic Grassmannians) can be presented by combinatorial objects called even shifted young diagram. Our method relies on the Blow-up setup of Balmer-Calmès, and we investigate the connecting homomorphism of the localization sequence via the projective bundle formula of Walter-Nenashev, the projection formula of Calmès-Hornbostel and the excess intersection formula of Fasel.
We determine the set of connected components of closed affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for hyperspecial maximal parahoric subgroups of unramified connected reductive groups. This extends the work by Viehmann for split reductive groups, and the work by Chen-Kisin-Viehmann on minuscule affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties.
The category of effective Grothendieck-Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$ (and Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^W_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$) by Voevodsky-Suslin method starting with some category of GW-correspondences (and Witt-correspondences) over a perfect field $k$, $char\,k\neq 2$, is defined. The functor $M^{GW}_{eff}\colon Sm_k\to \mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$ of Grothendieck-Witt-motives of smooth varieties is computed and it is proved that for any smooth scheme $X$ and homotopy invariant sheave with GW-transfers $F$ $$ Hom_{\mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)}(M^{GW}_{ef…
In this paper we study the higher secant varieties of Grassmann varieties in relation to Waring's problem for alternating tensors and to Alexander-Hirschowitz theorem. We show how to identify defective higher secant varieties of Grassmannians using a probabilistic method involving Terracini's Lemma, and we describe an algorithm which can compute, by numerical methods, dim(G(k,n)^{s}) for n<=14. Our main result is that, except for Grassmannians of lines, if n<=14 and k<=(n-1)/2 (if n=14 we have studied the case k<=5) there are only the four known defective cases: G(2,6)^{3}, G(3,7)^{3}, G(3,7)^…
In this paper we calculate the dimension of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the affine Grassmannian of unramified groups. We also examine the irreducible components of ADLVs in the superbasic case and the $J_b(F)$-action on them.
We show that the Grothendieck-Witt and Witt groups of smooth complex cellular varieties can be identified with their topological KO-groups. As an application, we deduce the values of the Witt groups of all irreducible hermitian symmetric spaces, including smooth complex quadrics, spinor varieties and symplectic Grassmannians.
We study the topological group structure (coming from loop multiplication) on an affine Grassmannian. In particular, we study finite-dimensional subvarieties that generate the homology ring. We show that there is a canonical family of generating Schubert varieties, namely those defined by the negative of the coroot associated to the highest root. These not only generate the homology, but generate the affine Grassmannian itself in a precise sense.
For the toric variety X associated to the Bruhat poset of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian, we describe the singular locus in terms of the faces of the associated polyhedral cone. We also determine the tangent cones at the maximal singularities of X. These turn out to be again toric varieties. In the case of X being associated to the Bruhat poset of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian of 2-planes in a n-dimensional vector space (over the base field), we also prove a certain product formula relating the multiplicities at certain singular points.
We prove that the divisor class group of any open Richardson variety in the Grassmannian is trivial. Our proof uses Nagata's criterion, localizing the coordinate ring at a suitable set of Plücker coordinates. We prove that these Plücker coordinates are prime elements by showing that the subscheme they define is an open subscheme of a positroid variety. Our results hold over any field and over the integers.
For any simple, simply connected algebraic group $G$ of type $B,C$ and $D$ and for any maximal parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$, we provide a criterion for a Richardson variety in $G/P$ to admit semistable points for the action of a maximal torus $T$ with respect to an ample line bundle on $G/P$.
In this paper we study Prym varieties and their moduli space using the well known techniques of the infinite Grassmannian. There are three main results of this paper: a new definition of the BKP hierarchy over an arbitrary base field (that generalizes the classical one over the complex numbers; a characterization of Prym varieties in terms of dynamical systems, and explicit equations for the moduli space of (certain) Prym varieties. For all of these problems the language of the infinite Grassmannian, in its algebro-geometric version, allows us to deal with these problems from the same point of…
Let G be a split semi-simple linear algebraic group over a field, let P be a parabolic subgroup and let L be a line bundle on the projective homogeneous variety G/P. We give a simple condition on the class of L in Pic(G/P)/2 in terms of Dynkin diagrams implying that the Witt groups W^i(G/P,L) are zero for all integers i. In particular, if B is a Borel subgroup, then W^i(G/B,L) is zero unless L is trivial in Pic(G/B)/2.
Grassmann tensors arise from classical problems of scene reconstruction in computer vision. In particular, bifocal Grassmann tensors, related to a pair of projections from a projective space onto view-spaces of varying dimensions, generalise the classical notion of fundamental matrices. In this paper we study in full generality the variety of bifocal Grassmann tensors focusing on its birational geometry. To carry out this analysis, every object of multi-view geometry is declined both from an algebraic and geometric point of view, e.g., the duality between the view spaces and the space of rays …
Given a homogeneous component of an exterior algebra, we characterize those subspaces in which every nonzero element is decomposable. In geometric terms, this corresponds to characterizing the projective linear subvarieties of the Grassmann variety with its Plucker embedding. When the base field is finite, we consider the more general question of determining the maximum number of points on sections of Grassmannians by linear subvarieties of a fixed (co)dimension. This corresponds to a known open problem of determining the complete weight hierarchy of linear error correcting codes associated to…
Let G be a simply-connected simple compact Lie group over the complex numbers. The affine Grassmannian is a projective ind-variety, homotopy-equivalent to the loop space of G and closely analogous to a maximal flag variety of the classical Grassmannian manifold. It has a Schubert cell decomposition indexed by the coroot lattice or equivalently by the minimal length coset representatives for the affine Weyl group modulo the Weyl group for G. The closure of an affine Schubert cell is a finite dimensional projective variety that we call an affine Schubert variety. In this paper we completely dete…
We compute the initial ideals, with respect to certain conveniently chosen term orders, of ideals of tangent cones at torus fixed points to Schubert varieties in orthogonal Grassmannians. The initial ideals turn out to be square-free monomial ideals and therefore Stanley-Reisner face rings of simplicial complexes. We describe these complexes. The maximal faces of these complexes encode certain sets of non-intersecting lattice paths.
We study subsets of Grassmann varieties G(l,m) over a field F, such that these subsets are unions of Schubert cycles, with respect to a fixed flag. We study the linear spans of, and in case of positive characteristic, the number of points on such unions over finite fields. Moreover we study a geometric duality of such unions, and give a combinatorial interpretation of this duality. We discuss the maximum number of points over a finite field for the Schubert unions of a given spanning dimension, and we give some applications to coding theory. We define Schubert union codes, and study the parame…
The Witt ring of a complex flag variety describes the interesting -- i.e. torsion -- part of its topological KO-theory. We show that for a large class of flag varieties, these Witt rings are exterior algebras, and that the degrees of the generators can be determined by Dynkin diagram combinatorics. Besides full flag varieties, projective spaces, and other varieties whose Witt rings were previously known, this class contains many flag varieties of exceptional types. Complete results are obtained for flag varieties of types G2 and F4. The results also extend to flag varieties over other algebrai…
We give a conjectural formula for sheaves supported on (irreducible) conormal varieties inside the cotangent bundle of the Grassmannian, such that their equivariant $K$-class is given by the partition function of an integrable loop model, and furthermore their $K$-theoretic pushforward to a point is a solution of the level $1$ quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation. We prove these results in the case that the Lagrangian is smooth (hence is the conormal bundle to a subGrassmannian). To compute the pushforward to a point, or equivalently to the affinization, we simultaneously degenerate the Lag…
An embedding of a point-line geometry Γis usually defined as an injective mapping εfrom the point-set of Γto the set of points of a projective space such that ε(l) is a projective line for every line l of Γ, but different situations have lately been considered in the literature, where ε(l) is allowed to be a subline of a projective line or a curve. In this paper we propose a more general definition of embedding which includes all the above situations and we focus on a class of embeddings, which we call Grassmman embeddings, where the points of Γare firstly associated to lines of a projective g…
Relying on recent advances in the theory of motives we develope a general formalism for derived categories of motives with Q-coefficients on perfect (ind-)schemes. As an application we give a motivic refinement of Zhu's geometric Satake equivalence for Witt vector affine Grassmannians in this set-up.
Quivers play an important role in the representation theory of algebras, with a key ingredient being the path algebra and the preprojective algebra. Quiver grassmannians are varieties of submodules of a fixed module of the path or preprojective algebra. In the current paper, we study these objects in detail. We show that the quiver grassmannians corresponding to submodules of certain injective modules are homeomorphic to the lagrangian quiver varieties of Nakajima which have been well studied in the context of geometric representation theory. We then refine this result by finding quiver grassm…
This is the second of two papers treating faithful actions of simple algebraic groups on irreducible modules and on the associated Grassmannian varieties; in the first paper we considered the module itself and its projective space, while here we handle the varieties comprising the subspaces of the module of fixed dimension greater than one. By explicit calculation, we show that in each case, with essentially one exception, there is a dense open subset any point of which has stabilizer conjugate to a fixed subgroup, called the generic stabilizer. We provide tables listing generic stabilizers in…
In this paper we compute the generating rank of $k$-polar Grassmannians defined over commutative division rings. Among the new results, we compute the generating rank of $k$-Grassmannians arising from Hermitian forms of Witt index $n$ defined over vector spaces of dimension $N > 2n$. We also study generating sets for the $2$-Grassmannians arising from quadratic forms of Witt index $n$ defined over $V(N,{\mathbb F}_q)$ for $q=4,8,9$ and $2n \leq N \leq 2n+2$. We prove that for $N >6$ they can be generated over the prime subfield, thus determining their generating rank.
In this paper we construct free resolutions of certain class of closed subvarieties of affine space of symmetric matrices (of a given size). Our class covers the symmetric determinantal varieties (i.e., determinantal varieties in the space of symmetric matrices), whose resolutions were first constructed by Józefiak-Pragacz-Weyman. Our approach follows the techniques developed in Free Resolutions of Some Schubert Singularities by Kummini-Lakshmibai-Sastry-Seshadri, and uses the geometry of Schubert varieties.
We define the odd symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds, which are smooth projective varieties equipped with an action of the odd symplectic group and generalizing the usual symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds. Contrary to the latter, which are the flag manifolds of the symplectic group, the varieties we introduce are not homogeneous. We argue nevertheless that in many respects the odd symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds behave like homogeneous varieties; in support of this claim, we compute the automorphism group of the odd symplectic grassmannians, and we prove a Borel-…
We construct new examples of derived autoequivalences for a family of higher-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties. Specifically, we take the total spaces of certain natural vector bundles over Grassmannians G(r,d) of r-planes in a d-dimensional vector space, and define endofunctors of the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves associated to these varieties. In the case r=2 we show that these are autoequivalences using the theory of spherical functors. Our autoequivalences naturally generalize the Seidel-Thomas spherical twist for analogous bundles over projective spaces.
We define an overconvergent version of the Hyodo-Kato complex for semistable varieties $Y$ over perfect fields of positive characteristic, and prove that its hypercohomology tensored with $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers the log-rigid cohomology when $Y$ is quasi-projective. We then describe the monodromy operator using the overconvergent Hyodo-Kato complex. Finally, we show that overconvergent Hyodo-Kato cohomology agrees with log-crystalline cohomology in the projective semistable case.
Let $G$ be a simply connected, almost simple group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf k$, and $P$ a maximal parabolic subgroup corresponding to omitting a cominuscule root. We construct a compactification $ϕ:T^*G/P\rightarrow X(u)$, where $X(u)$ is a Schubert variety corresponding to the loop group $LG$. Let $N^*X(w)\subset T^*G/P$ be the conormal variety of some Schubert variety $X(w)$ in $G/P$; hence we obtain that the closure of $ϕ(N^*X(w))$ in $X(u)$ is a $B$-stable compactification of $N^*X(w)$. We further show that this compactification is a Schubert subvariety of $X(u)$ if and …
In this paper we classify weak Fano varieties that can be obtained by blowing-up general points in prime Fano varieties. We also classify spherical blow-ups of Grassmannians in general points, and we compute their effective cone. These blow-ups are, in particular, Mori dream spaces. Furthermore, we compute the stable base locus decomposition of the blow-up of a Grassmannian in one point, and we show how it is determined by linear systems of hyperplanes containing the osculating spaces of the Grassmannian at the blown-up point, and by the rational normal curves in the Grassmannian passing throu…

In this paper we compute the dimension of all the higher secant varieties to the Segre-Veronese embedding of $\mathbb{P}^n\times \mathbb{P}^1$ via the section of the sheaf $\mathcal{O}(a,b)$ for any $n,a,b\in \mathbb{Z}^+$. We relate this result to the Grassmann Defectivity of Veronese varieties and we classify all the Grassmann $(1,s-1)$-defective Veronese varieties.
The vector space of symmetric matrices of size $n$ has a natural map to a projective space of dimension $2^n-1$ given by the principal minors. This map extends to the Lagrangian Grassmannian ${\rm LG}(n,2n)$ and over the complex numbers the image is defined, as a set, by quartic equations. In case the characteristic of the field is two, it was observed that, for $n=3,4$, the image is defined by quadrics. In this paper we show that this is the case for any $n$ and that moreover the image is the spinor variety associated to ${\rm Spin}(2n+1)$. Since some of the motivating examples are of interes…
